Note to Republicans: Please Keep Talking About Rape

It’s hard to believe that these Neanderthal morons haven’t yet figured out how incredibly bad they make themselves look when they start spouting off about rape, but once again a Republican is showing the world why the GOP should not be allowed near the reins of power: GOP Rep: Todd Akin ‘Partly Right’ on Legitimate Rape.

And this lunatic is chairman of the GOP Doctors’ Caucus.

Rep. Phil Gingrey, an ob-gyn and chairman of the GOP Doctors Caucus, explained to the audience at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce breakfast Thursday in Smyrna, Ga., that Akin wasn’t far off on the science when he said rape victims rarely get pregnant because their bodies have “ways of shutting that whole thing down.”

“I’ve delivered lots of babies, and I know about these things. It is true,” Gingrey said, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. “We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ‘Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.’ So he was partially right wasn’t he?”

“But the fact that a woman may have already ovulated 12 hours before she is raped, you’re not going to prevent a pregnancy there by a woman’s body shutting anything down because the horse has already left the barn, so to speak,” Gingrey continued. “And yet the media took that and tore it apart.”

Yes, that’s right — you just witnessed an ob-gyn doctor who advises his patients to drink booze in order to get pregnant.

And now, of course, he’s desperately trying to claim his idiotic remarks were “misconstrued.”

�At a breakfast yesterday morning, I was asked why Democrats made abortion a central theme of the presidential campaign. I do not defend, nor do I stand by, the remarks made by Rep. Akin and Mr. Mourdock,� Gingrey said, referring to the Indiana Senate candidate who lost after saying pregnancies from rape are �something that God intended.�

�In my attempt to provide context as to what I presumed they meant, my position was misconstrued,� Gingrey said.

These statements have to be seen in light of their context: they want to prevent raped women from being able to obtain abortions, going so far as to allow the rapist to sue the mother in the event of one.

Actually, we’ve been trying to pregnant for a while and have had doctors say the same thing: that getting tense and nervous and constantly doing ovulation tests and whatever makes it difficult to get pregnant. They didn’t say drink, per se, but they did say to try to relax, take it easy, have a nice night out, etc.

Of course, that has nothing to do with rape. There is very little evidence that stress can prevent pregnancy. Doctors recommend decreasing stress when trying to get pregnant because it can’t hurt. But there’s no proof that it actually helps. And there is zero evidence that it stops rape victims from getting pregnant. If you look at the numbers, you’ll find raped women get pregnant about 5% of the time — the same rate as women not using birth control.

So, yeah, he’s a fricking moron.

And I’m going to have to do something about the head-shaped dent in my desk.

Do you think they’re that intellectually honest with themselves? I’m not sure. So much of the modern GOP seems to function via code word anyway. Sometimes it seems like even the leadership just memorizes a set of talking points and really thinks nothing further of it.

Not sure if I agree with you. If a district is heavily gerrymandered, there’s no need for Republican crazy talkers. All you need is a sentient Republican to run and he/she is guaranteed to win. I just think every once in a while, the crazies speak their minds in public and blurt out things that should be kept within their circle.

In a gerrymandered district, the big vote is the primary, not the general election. Winning primaries is harder, mostly because so few people vote in them. You have to appeal to your party’s base voters, who tend to reside closer to the political extremes than to the center.

The criminal or nutcase is almost always going to be able to get in the first shot. All a police officer or armed citizen can ever hope to do against an active shooter is limit the damage.

I am not comparing anything. 96% of the human and chimpanzee DNA is “similar” overall, but there are some very significant differences in some chromosomes, and other chromosomes are “nearly identical.”

Neanderthal DNA is 99.7 percent identical to modern human DNA, with Humans having 1 to 4 percent “the same” DNA as Neanderthals.

I don’t know the difference between “identical” and “the same” in terms of DNA, but apparently there is a difference.

The best way to put it is that if you traced back the family “tree”, (it won’t be a tree that far back, because the same person will appear several times in your lineage, but still) and you’re not from sub-Saharan Africa, you’d have somewhere between 1 and 4 percent of your ancestors at the generation of 40 000 years ago or so be Neanderthals. In other words, a lot of us are hybrids from some cross-species breeding. Including, oddly enough, almost all of those who worry about “miscegenation”.

Jamesfirecat had it right in that these data points of armed citizens swooping and saving the day are outliers. It starts getting into that nonsense of “an armed society is a safe society.”

As for God’s perfection: fucking bang up job he did in Sandy Hook. Perfectly sat by and let 20 kids ages 7 and under get slaughtered.

It’s called free will. We do not have a chip in our heads that just shuts us down when we decide to do evil. If you were God, would you put one in?

He killed his mother before going to the school. He stated he did it because he had been bullied and mistreated all of his life.
I see no mention that he had planned to go “shoot up” another school.

The school’s assistant principal, Joel Myrick stopped him from getting away by retrieving a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol from his truck and held him in the parking lot until police arrived. The shooter was already in his mother’s car.

Good for Myrick for detaining him, but he didn’t stop any shootings.

If you read the comments at the Marietta Daily Journal, you’ll see that Gingrey has done what Democrats in his district could not; by simultaneously insulting women, gun people, and anyone who’s ever had outpatient mental health care, he has achieved bipartisan consensus that he may as well retire from the House after 2014.
