The chairman of “Gun Appreciation Day,” planned for the weekend of President Obama’s inauguration, feels that if Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive he’d agree that if African Americans had been able to own guns right from the beginning of the US, they never would have been slaves.

Of course, that would have meant they needed to be armed while they were still in Africa, because that’s where they were enslaved in the first place.

(I know, I shouldn’t be trying to impose logical sense on this whacked out right wing attempt to enlist Martin Luther King, who died at the hands of an assassin with a gun, as an advocate for universal gun ownership. It’s an amazingly cynical and twisted argument, though. Where do they come up with this crazy shit?)

In fact, a great many slaves did have guns before they were enslaved, since their enslavement resulted from tribal warfare. This warfare, in turn, was fed by the huge influx of guns brought by slave traders.

African Military Systems to 1800, wikipedia:

Guns were to have an important effect on African military systems. Rising quantities of guns are associated with increases in the slave trade, as major powers such as Dahomey, Benin and Ashanti stepped up their conquests to feed the insatiable demand for human bodies. Guns were the single most important item traded to Africans in the decades prior to 1800, usually paid for in gold or slaves. Some historians argue that the introduction of firearms had an enormous impact on slave gathering in Africa. Flintlocks, which were more reliable than matchlocks, sparked the first big wave of gun sales, and obsolete smoothbore muskets of this type were being exported to Africa even into the 19th century. The psychological impact of guns in the night and dawn attacks favored by slave raiders was significant, and in slave-catching, flintlocks could also be loaded with shot, wounding and crippling victims rather than killing them outright. The connection between the gun trade and the slave trade is described by the Dutch Director-General at Elmina in 1730:

“The great quantity of guns and powder which the Europeans have brought have caused terrible wars between the Kings and Princes and Caboceers of these lands, who made their prisoners of war slaves; these slaves were immediately bought up by Europeans at steadily increasing prices, which in turn, amimates again and again these people to renew their facilities, and their hope of gain and easy profits makes them forget all about, using all sorts of pretexts to attack each other for reviving old disputes.”

Yes, that happened. Note that the red flag raised over the Negro Fort under the Union Jack did not hold the modern “Revolution” meaning of a red flag. In 1816, for a fort to fly a red flag under its national flag was a sign that its garrison would give the attacking force no quarter; i.e. anyone who tried to storm the fort would be killed.

Amazing the stuff you turn up in a Google search. I searched “African Trade Musket” for the above item. Besides the quoted article, I learned that smoothbore muzzle loading firearms were made for sale in African right into the 1950s. This was partly because Africans in some colonial areas were often not permitted to have modern arms and partly because the muzzle loaders made it easier for them to make or improvise their own ammunition.

The re-armed Confederates don’t go rock and roll and blast the Union out of existence in a matter of hours, that is. A man with an AK can still be struck dead by a Minie ball, after all. Among other things, Union scientists and engineers quickly figure out the new-fangled gun’s workings and even manage to duplicate it. They cannot make the smokeless powder, however. They do know that it is a compound related to nitro-cellulose but they do not have the technology to make in bulk, at least not safely.

One of the things I love about Turtledove is his capacity for thinking these things through, often with surprising results.

It would be a hell of a legacy. Reminds me for some reason of a classic tale from the 1001 Nights, Abu Hasan and the Fart:

They recount that in the city of Kaukaban in Yemen there was a man named Abu Hasan of the Fadhli tribe who left the Bedouin life and became a townsman and the wealthiest of merchants. His wife died while both were young, and his friends pressed him to marry again.
Weary of their pressure, Abu Hasan entered into negotiations with the old women who procure matches, and married a woman as beautiful as the moon shining over the sea. To the wedding banquet he invited kith and kin, ulema and fakirs, friends and foes, and all of his acquaintances.

The whole house was thrown open to feasting: There were five different colors of rice, and sherbets of as many more; kid goats stuffed with walnuts, almonds, and pistachios; and a young camel roasted whole. So they ate and drank and made merry.

BTW, mites proliferate in dryness, so upping your humidity is a good idea!

I’m maintaining 80% humidity and I’ve been misting with water daily but growth in the greenhouse have slowed down considerably. It could also be due to cold weather, short days and since the greenhouse ventilation is closed I think co2 levels are probably pretty low. I’m thinking about a co2 system might liven things up a bit.

Done! Even the most basic info on greenhouse growing is a little hard to find.
My humidity doesn’t fluctuate by much, maybe a few percent. I invested in some decent humidity control and monitoring gear.

So, which are we supposed to believe - that guns are the solution or the problem.

Within the past 24 hours, we get prime examples of both.

A gun advocate who’s got an arsenal and has posted countless videos about firearms is himself shot dead by a firearm. All those guns he owns? Didn’t do him a damned bit of good.

Then, you’ve got an instance where a woman apparently protected her family from an intruder with a handgun. She unloaded all six rounds, and the gunman was injured but fled. Proponents note that if the intruder had an accomplice the woman would have been in trouble.

And yet, the numbers are what they are. The murder rates are what they are. They are higher in states where there are more lax gun control laws than those that have tighter restrictions.

I think when you look at the murder/homicide rates from countries with stricter than the US gun controls, the answer is stricter gun controls. Now, like immigration, it will take a generation or two to change the US mind set.

It’s a combination of functions, light watering & humidity. Bugs are a given. mites are hard to get rid of, especially in the winter.

I haven’t double checked the facts but if the author is not a wingnut, strong efforts were made on the Federal level after Emancipation to ensure that slaves could have guns (in response to the KKK’s effort to take them away), and modern gun control efforts actually started as an effort to keep guns out of the hands of the Black Panthers. If true…. crazy, right?

About as logical as this “if slaves had guns” line of reasoning. But funnier. If ferociously sacreligious.
