re: #7 Interesting Times
I had posted the EIA link when it came out, and commented on how the EIA has a very long history of, well, putting out basically whatever the oil industry feeds them.
Their production models are economic models, which they clearly emphasize, and do not designed to include data on the actual physical substance itself, or the geology. They look at “oil” production like any economics outfit looks at production.
The EIA was created as part of the effort of importing countries to grapple with the economic power of OPEC. The EIA is the US version of the international IEA, and even though the EIA is part of the Energy Department it has very little to do with the rest of the DoE’s efforts. I think the EIA belongs in Commerce, as that is really what it does, or the Interior Department, as they are the ones that manage resources.

CA gun show draws 10,000 people ‘getting ready for the next revolution’
What drew an estimated 10,000 people to a Northern California gun show? Simple. According to one attendee, they’re scared.
“Obama wants to take everybody’s guns away,” said Bob Daziel, who stood in line with hundreds on Saturday to get into the Crossroads of The West event in Daly City, California. “So they’re down here buying ammo, buying guns, they’re getting ready for the next revolution.”

Beijing’s air quality is an embarrassment to the government. The “official” air quality reports are always rosier than the ones issued by the US Embassy. The Chinese government has asked the Embassy to cease reporting air quality, but the Embassy has so far ignored the requests.
Beijing is a traffic nightmare, even with its modern subway and highways. There are just too many people, and more people are buying and driving cars every day. I read one article that said 1,500 cars are added to the Beijing streets every day!
So, when my friends suggest I should try teaching in Beijing where the pay is so much better, I politely say no thanks. I like breathing O2 over CO anytime.

I actually red the full-metal derp linked to and could actually feel my IQ points drop. Apparently he drew Obama’s ire by protesting against SOPA, which caused an overzealous state attorney to press for him to stand trial even while MIT didn’t want to pursue criminal charges. They wanted him dead because he’d thwarted their plans for controlling the internet. And the blogger asserts that if Aaron had just been as much a Biblethumper as her, he’d have realized he was a conservative and joined their cause.

You see, Obama has this mind altering ray that he’s had mounted on a DRONE!!1 and it fires a beam that makes people with mental issues go either homicidal or suicidal. That’s not only the story of the death of Aaron Swartz, its also how the Newtown shootings happened. Obama had Swartz killed to ensure that FEMA could rule the Internet, and made Lanza a mass murderer so he could TAKE AWAY OUR GUNZ!!!11

Meg Twitman is calling the shots nowadays.
So no good news anytime soon.
Actually, somewhat disagree. She did a couple of things I thought very smart, enough so that provided:
a) nobody buys the company out; and
b) she can resist a stockholder eviction notice,
I think HP is likely to turn around over the upcoming couple of years.
A minor anecdote that I use as a tell. Whitman’s predecessor was preparing to spin off the most profitable product - printers - as a(n initially) wholly owned subsidiary, but with its own stock and books. Whitman reversed that one. In my experience, the people who spin off cash cows are pirates and short-term leaders looking for loot now instead of growth later. I found it encouraging.
FWIW when she took over she said it would take five years to recover, of which the first two would continue to decline. So far she seems to be on track.

There are times when I’d wish for the Doctor’s call box simply to drop Alex off in Byzantium where even his paranoia wouldn’t be enough to match the real conspiracies and intrigues of the Emperor’s court.
Don’t wish for that! Jones would become so insane he’d collapse in on himself and pull the entire world in his Black Hole of Stupid!

Dude. Go to bed & rest. That will help.
I don’t know if you have any set of devotions you can pray, but when I’m in that kind of space I pray an Anglican rosary. It helps calm the heart, the mind & soul. Given the history of Islam there must be some similar set of prayers you can use to calm your heart, mind & soul before the one god. That will bring you the rest you need.
Now, good night… :)

Concur. The person trying to build up the top earning divisions is someone who generally wants the company to grow and do well over time.

The first time I saw Alex Jones was right after I moved to Austin in 1998. He was ranting on one of the local public access TV channels.
I wish he’d stayed there. At least then he’d be ignored by everyone but the local cranks instead of being a national figure.

You me and the rest of the world. I had two great parents yet I can still remember sitting in a stairwell listening to them scream at the top of their lungs for hours for too much of my childhood. Still they remained together. I don’t know what your parents face. “Life’s a bitch. Then you die.” was how we put it in the Army.

I took my HS sweetheart to the show but she wasn’t as excited as me after :) Few years later she was one of the last the Deadheads chasing them around shortly before Jerry croaked. If you’re talking Texas Music, Billy Joe Shaver has to be part of the conversation. He’s really a poet, and one I enjoyed working with back in the record label days.
Here’s some examples of his song writing, some of which were hits for Waylon Jennings.
Honky Tonk Heroes
“Georgia on a Fast Train” - Billy Joe Shaver
“I’m Gonna Live Forever” - Billy Joe Shaver
“Since You Asked Me To”
Billy Joe’s song (true story) about when he shot and killed a man (the other guy pulled a gun & took too long to aim);

I have a odd song story. I had an old tape with a Christmas song that I couldn’t identify. Over the years I would try googling some of the words with no effect. This year I finally got a hit. Some guy with a blog called “Proof Positive” made an entry about the song with a youtube link and the title and singer. It was invaluable because my tape was really old and the quality was wearing down fast. So, armed with the title and singer I went to Itunes and bought the song. I was very pleased and went to this guy’s blog to post a comment and say thanks and wish him the best. We wound up trading a couple of comments and he wound up reposting that entry. For the halibut I took a look at the whole blog. It’s a right wing blog, not too loony or anything, but still right wing, and I put up a couple of comments on some of his entries. I figured we had a brief but fair conversation, but I just noticed that he changed the way you can post, so now I can’t say anything on his blog. Make room for one more in the bubble chamber!

Satu up late finishing Ken Follett’s “The Fall of Giants”, which ends with the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 being put down and one of the characters saying “Well, the leader, Hitler, is in prison. Glad that’s the end of him!”

That one’s on my reading list…another good historical read was “Hawkwood Diabolical Englishman” by F Stonor Saunders, about the foreign mercenaries who made a fortune off the lack of central government in Italy in the 14th century.
Well organized militias, indeed…

One of the English language textbooks here has a short article about Hawkwood, believe it or not. It prompted me to look him up on Wikipedia. He sure was a wiley fellow. If some city council didn’t pay him, he’d turn his soldiers loose to loot and pillage the city, or go visit a rival city and offer his services (for a suitable fee) to loot and pillage the first city on the rival’s behalf. Despite all this, the Italians loved him.

Point of the story was that hiring mercenaries seemed a cheap short-term solution for most city-states, but in the end, it would have been cheaper to raise and maintain their own armies.

‘Technicals’ don’t fare too well against armored cars with 105mm cannons, and the French have those.

We outsource our manufacturing becuase it promises lower prices for American consumers.
The only jobs we then create are minimum-age, no-benefit jobs at K-Mart selling the stuff whose production we have outsourced. Which is all we can afford at our wage levels.
It is a great economic model for the likes of Bain Capital.

T-mobile is the only company that has SIM cards separate from phones or service plans, so that’s handy for me when coming back to the States for a short time. But I’m not surprised it’s on the list. I’m neutral on American; they’re no worse or better than any other US airline I’ve flown. 6 Arrested in New Rape of a Bus Passsenger in India
Police said Sunday they have arrested six suspects in another gang rape of a bus passenger in India, four weeks after a brutal attack on a student on a moving bus in the capital outraged Indians and led to calls for tougher rape laws.
Police officer Raj Jeet Singh said a 29-year-old woman was the only passenger on a bus as she was traveling to her village in northern Punjab state on Friday night. The driver refused to stop at her village despite her repeated pleas and drove her to a desolate location, he said.
There, the driver and the conductor took her to a building where they were joined by five friends and took turns raping her throughout the night, Singh said.
The driver dropped the woman off at her village early Saturday, he said.
And somehow, the victim will be blamed for what happened to her. Sickening.

“Since Obama’s first term our numbers have doubled and now that we’re headed to a second term it’s going to triple, this is going to be the biggest resurgence of the Klan since 1915,” said one of the Klansmen interviewed.
The Klansman have been handing out flyers in a Mechanicsville neighborhood, and neighbors who received them have contacted CBS 6.
“We’re not trying to target anybody or scare anybody with hate, we’re just using our freedom of speech to drop fliers,” said one of the Klansmen interviewed. “Everyone thinks that we’re a hate group, we’re not a hate group, we don’t hate anyone, and we want to see good things come to our race.”

Indeed. What a great argument. Respectable women don’t get raped so obviously any women who does get raped wasn’t respectable. Shades of Akin et al. As Sol said, it’s only a matter of degree.

I read Pharyngula fairly regularly, and Myers has been on a tear over misogyny and feminism for the last 18 months. …To have your cock cut off and then plead special privileges as women – above natural-born women, who don’t know the meaning of suffering, apparently – is a bit like the old definition of chutzpah: the boy who killed his parents and then asked the jury for clemency on the grounds he was an orphan.
Shims, shemales, whatever you’re calling yourselves these days – don’t threaten or bully us lowly natural-born women, I warn you. No. Depending on the type of dish that’s either one or two jacks (if two, one moves the azimuth of the dish ,, east to west and the other moves the elevation0

Proven: Pruney Fingers Give You a Better Grip
Standing in the shower or sitting in the tub, many of us have looked at our wrinkled fingertips and had occasion to wonder: Why do they get so pruney when wet?
Over the years, people have pointed to a number of explanations, most commonly the idea that the wrinkles are simply a reflection of the skin absorbing water. Now, according to a study published yesterday in the journal Biology Letters by researchers from Newcastle University in the UK, we have a definitive (and more interesting) explanation: Pruney fingers are better at gripping wet objects. All to fix a small leak in a line.
10 minute fix.
Hours up and down.
No thanks!

NOT! Gah, I’m turning green around the gills just thinking about it.
I find some of that stuff hard to watch but watch it anyway. Some folks will climb larger towers and to chin-up and back flips. Crazy stuff. I have to look away sometimes.

A very well written, non-combative and pointed rebuttal. The Guardian should put a link to it on the original article.

A friend and I went to the Grand Canyon to disperse the ashes of a dear friend who made that request. We chose to do it at dawn when the canyon is alive with color and grandeur. The problem was that as we approached the edge of the cliff to release his ashes in the wind, neither of us could do it. We both freaked, getting dizzy and weak the closer we inched towards the edge. We finally emptied the box of ashes on the ground as close as we could muster ourselves to get to the edge and let the wind take it from there.
Always felt kinda bad about that.

I would’ve totally done the same. The only way I’d even be able to get within 50 yards of the edge was if I slithered along on my belly. No way would I even attempt it standing upright.

Next time somebody dies and wants you to do that, I would suggest putting a firecracker inside a paper bag, light the fuse and throw it. The firecracker should break the bag open while it is falling, and since the contents are already ashes, well, I guess no harm done.

I happen to love turbulence. And taking off is awesome, especially when the pilot adjusts the throttle and the plane either sinks (It doesn’t really sink, it just feel like it does) or you get pushed down in your seat.
