NRA Advertisement Attacks Obama’s Children

Disgusting right wing attack ad plumbs new depths
Wingnuts • Views: 27,250

The NRA’s new advertisement is a blatant appeal to the looniest segment of the right wing, to those cretins who seem to believe President Obama’s children deserve no special protection just because their father is President of the US.

And when they were criticized for this disgusting ad, their response was:

UPDATE at 1/16/13 11:40:30 am

More craziness from the increasingly shrill NRA:

Throughout its history, the National Rifle Association has led efforts to promote safety and responsible gun ownership. Keeping our children and society safe remains our top priority.

The NRA will continue to focus on keeping our children safe and securing our schools, fixing our broken mental health system, and prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law. We look forward to working with Congress on a bi-partisan basis to find real solutions to protecting America’s most valuable asset - our children.

Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation. Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy.

It is accepted practice that the President and his family are to be protected by armed guards.

What is not accepted - or acceptable to most Americans - is that schoolchildren are to be protected by armed guards at all times.

3 HappyWarrior  Wed, Jan 16, 2013 11:35:09am

Don’t forget that they released a shooting game not long after LaPierre called gamers people who fantasize about violence. I’ve never seen such a tone deaf organization. I really hope this is the move that brings the NRA universal revilement but unfortunately I think it will actually increase their support in some circles because hating Obama and his family is a sport.

Just trying to change the subject huh like the NRA spokesman blaming films released in the 1990’s for the shooting? STFU hypocrites.

Would Rep. Steve Stockman Pass A Firearms Background Check?

“…According to a July 23, 1995 Houston Chronicle article by Richard Stewart (which is currently behind a pay wall), in 1977 Stockman was charged with a felony for drug possession. Stockman claims that when he reported to prison to serve a two day sentence on a driving violation — something that happened “more than once” — his girlfriend stuck three Valium tablets in his pants. The charge was eventually reduced, and Stockman served probation.”

The NRA ad states as a settled fact that kids in a gun-free zone are not being adequately protected. It will leave, in some minds, the implication that the President is fully-aware of this danger to other people’s children, and doesn’t care. The ad all but accuses the Obama family of having no concern for the safety of other families.

Conclusion: the NRA really, really wants Obama to back off. They may sense that finally, public opinion is turning against them.

Lapin: God Does Not Want You to Ever Retire

Rabbi Daniel Lapin appeared on AFA’s “Today’s Issues” this morning where he made the case that people are never supposed to retire because the word “retirement” does not appear in the Bible. In fact, it is because people retire that their health often deteriorates because they are basically saying to God that they are done serving people, and since that is the case, well “then who needs you”?

After Columbine Shooting, NRA Supported Gun Free School Zones It Now Opposes

While the NRA has drawn widespread bipartisan criticism for its post-Newtown intransigence, its current opposition to virtually any gun safety measure also flies in the face of its positions from the late 1990s.

Days after the Columbine school shootings in 1999, the NRA made the controversial decision to hold its national convention in neighboring Denver, Colorado. At that convention, Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre embraced some commonsense rules to prevent similar future tragedies.

NRA spox: “Whoever thinks the ad is about Pres. Obama’s daughters are missing the point completely or they’re trying to change the subject.”

If you have paid attention to NRA memes regarding this for the last twenty years, you will see a measure of consistency and it is supposed to be based on liberal hypocrisy wrt guns and populist anger.

Diane Feinstein…who has been a major gun control and gun ban supporter but also had a next-to-impossible to obtain concealed carry permit in California.

Liberal columnist William Raspberry…who was also a gun control and handgun ban proponent by admitted to keeping a loaded revolver at home.

Rosie O’Donnell….another gun control advocate but who had armed private security.

The NRA has used these people as examples of gun control types who want the public to be disarmed but feel they are above any such restriction themselves. In our individualistic and class warfare-prone society, this is poisonous, and it works. In the case of William Raspberry, and Diane Feinstein, I also think it was accurate and deserved.

When you see the past examples from the last 20 years (and these are not the only ones by any means), you recognize the pattern that today’s ad falls into. It really isn’t about the daughters…it is about Obama supposedly protecting them while saying “Fuck you!” to everybody else who wants armed protection for their kids. It is classic anti-elitism populist warfare, but it is also very, very dishonest in this instance. This will likely backfire with most Americans who understand that the children of the POTUS have to be protected at a level that other children simply do not require in most cases.

Back in the day, this hypocrisy issue may have had some teeth.

Today, it would pretty much appear to be a non-issue.

Any public figure coming out today in favor of gun control instantly has sufficient cause for a concealed carry permit because of the massive ongoing gun nut freakout.

I just had a look at Lapin’s website. It is strange in that it he spends a great deal of time talking about America as a Christian nation and how great that is. He is active in the American Alliance of Jews & Christians. This is not your everyday rabbi. Not that there is anything wrong with recognizing the common values of Christians and Jews. But the way in which he does it seems that he is speaking to evangelicals not Jews.

There are some Jews who devote more time pandering to Evangelicals than to their fellow Jews. Medved and Lapin are a couple of these.

Nebraska Gov. Proposes Elimination Of State Income Tax At Expense Of Poorest Residents

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) became the latest Republican governor to propose the elimination of his state’s income tax during his State of the State speech last night, a move that would eliminate $2.4 billion in revenues each year. To replace the lost revenue, Heineman proposed eliminating at least half of the $5 billion in sales tax exemptions Nebraska offers annually, but he did not specify which of those exemptions he wanted to eliminate.

In truth, armed resistance was rife across much of occupied Europe. If the Jews had actually known just what was coming (and I don’t think anybody really foresaw the sheer horror that was being prepared) you can bet that many of them would have been trying either get guns if they could not get out. As I understand it, incitement to violence has to be very immediate and direct before it is no longer protected as free speech. Political agitprop tends to be legal by a fairly wide margin. E.g., Nazi rallies in Weimar Germany that ended peacefully would probably be protected speech under US first amendment case law.

Seems like most Democrats have been walking on eggshells these past few years or decades around the subject of guns and the NRA. Hopefully that period of, um, unilateral disarmament is coming to a close. And if the NRA is going to continually accuse and fundraise on the allegation that Democrats Are After Their Guns, then we might as well give them something to complain about.

re: #165 EPR-radar

As I understand it, incitement to violence has to be very immediate and direct before it is no longer protected as free speech. Political agitprop tends to be legal by a fairly wide margin. E.g., Nazi rallies in Weimar Germany that ended peacefully would probably be protected speech under US first amendment case law.

Yes. The SCOTUS has usually held that it must be a direct a specific threat to commit an act.

e.g. I am going to get a knife and stab you right now!

That would be the sort of thing that would have to be said, usually.

That’s a double-edged sword. Right-wingers are constantly claiming criticisms of them are “hate speech.” I prefer to allow vigorous debate and rely on the wisdom of the people; my faith was reaffirmed when 51% voted for the President.

Yep, said it better than I could. And frankly I like having hate speech allowed because it shows how stupid some people are. If we just censored Ann Coulter and people like that, we wouldn’t be able to laugh at how stupid they were and frankly censoring gives them the martyr complex they crave. There are some Jews who devote more time pandering to Evangelicals than to their fellow Jews. Medved and Lapin are a couple of these.

One of them, I forget if it was Medved or Lapin, was gushing over Mel Gibson when “The Passion of the Christ” even as many people, Jewish or otherwise (and including moonbat lefty Charles Krauthammer), were pointing out the vicious anti-semitism of them film. Even after Gibson’s drunk-driving anti-semitic tirade, the guy STILL couldn’t bring himself to denounce Gibson. Evangelical pandering to a pathetic degree.

It’s hard to find two philosophers so diametrically opposed as Jesus and Ayn Rand.

Well, in a way, this is today’s Republican party in a nutshell. A strange conflation of “all government is evil” and “let’s have a Washington-based Christian theocracy.” And to distract from the contradictions, lots of noise, enemies (especially the President), and reckless gambits like the threat to shut down the government.

re: #248 commonsenseisrare

I seem to note a re-occurring theme here. People who seem to be for all this gun grabbing sure do like to call names and spout meaningless dribble. In no way shape or form did this video attack the presidents children, and anyone with 1/8 of a brain should be able to discern “why are the presidents children protected at school” and “attacking” the pres. kids…just totally childish, ignorant, and utterly mind numbing stupidity. Why is it that there are so many people screaming “oh God, get rid of the evil guns” when they should be screamin “oh God, lets keep all these crazed psycho maniacs who are killing people off our streets, and away from our guns” ….oh thats right NO COMMON SENSE!!!! Get over it people, if guns are outlawed, it will only hurt law abiding citizens who WANT to obey the law…are you really naive enough to believe that evil/insane/mental criminals will turn in their guns?

Straw men. There’s probably just a handful of people at LGF that would like to “ban guns” on a wide scale basis such as they do in Australia or the UK. Most people here would support an assault weapons ban. There are others who are realistic and too the left, such as myself, that don’t see an assault weapons ban passing the House and have accepted that.

I Am a TGDN (Derived from I Am an Island by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle)

“A winter’s day,
In the darkness of Obama.
I am on Twitter.
Hating on all liberals,
Always screaming ‘No!’,
While the screen my Creepy Butthurt show:”

“I am a DERP!
I am a TiGGG-DeNN!”

“I build TiGDeN,
a fortress lame and DERPy.
Free from all li-ber-als!
I have no need for Reason,
Reason causes pain.
Its compromise and logic I disdain!”

“I am a DERP!
I am a TiGGG-DeNN!”

-not done yet-

And a derp feels no shame.
And a TGDN never learns…

The NRA’s hysterical, conspiracist approach is dangerous and stupid. Gus is right about the GOP House: There is not going to be a new assault weapons ban. The most Obama will get is a restriction on magazine capacity, probably to 10 rounds. If he is really lucky, he can get background checks on private sales, including gun shows. The latter provision would be much more effective than any other even though private transfers haven’t figured in most of the recent high-profile mass shootings. They do figure in the day to day run of gun crime, though, where un-backgrounded handguns are by far the biggest killers.
