If you think the NRA’s attempt to drum up fury and hatred for President Obama is already despicable, just wait — you ain’t seen nothin’ yet: NRA Planning ‘The Fight of the Century’ Against Obama.

The National Rifle Association cast its opposition to Obama’s plans as “the fight of the century” in a letter circulated at the 35th annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference, known in the trade as “the SHOT show,” in Las Vegas.

“I warned you this day was coming and now it’s here,” Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s fiery executive vice president, wrote in a fund-raising letter to the group’s 4 million members. “It’s not about protecting your children. It’s not about stopping crime. It’s about banning your guns … PERIOD!”

The letter reflected the NRA’s tough, no-holds-barred campaign against tighter restrictions on weapons and echoed a sharp video released by the group that calls Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for having the Secret Service protect his two daughters at school while saying that he is “skeptical” about armed guards in all schools.

Well at least now there’s a real proposal for them to cry about. About all it does is attempt to return us back to the ‘assault’ weapons ban of a few years ago. But since the NRA and its affiliates run on paranoia 24/7 even when no gun legislation of any kind is in the offing, one can only imagine how they’ll respond, and the lengths to which they will go, when someone dares to suggest that one style of gun be restricted.

Does the NRA Really Have 4 Million Members?

Writing in 2000, when the NRA claimed to have 3.6 million members, journalist Osha Gray Davidson speculated on some of the group’s strategies for fluffing itself up:

Two years ago, David Gross, then an NRA board member, confided to me that a substantial number of the group’s 1 million Life Members are, well, dead. “There just isn’t that much incentive to go find out when someone passes away,” Gross explained. “Not when the cost of maintaining (a dead member) is minimal and when they add to your membership list.”

Who else is included in that figure of 3.6 million? I may be—although I haven’t been a member for years. Not long ago, I received an NRA form letter stating that in recognition of my previous commitment to the Second Amendment, the gun group had granted me an honorary membership. The mailing even included an NRA membership card embossed with my name.

It’s all part of the NRA’s campaign of smoke and mirrors to make itself appear more formidable in Washington, where appearance often trumps reality. The NRA leadership must offer a silent prayer of thanks to the gods of journalistic sloth and credulity every time a reporter repeats that figure of 3.6 million members and the words “record high.”

And the most sickening thing is that after the next school shooting (and I am sad to have to say that there probably will be one within a few months) there will be people pointing out that Obama’s measures not only failed to prevent it, but made it even more possible.

Call it a gaffe: a slip-up that accidentally reveals the truth.

A recent memo by the Republican State Leadership Committee emphasizes the party’s 2010 victories in state legislatures as central to the House GOP retaining its majority in the 2012 elections.

The reason? Redistricting — or more precisely, gerrymandering.

In the memo — titled “How a Strategy of Targeting State Legislative Races in 2010 Led to a Republican U.S. House Majority in 2013” — RSLC boasts that it “raised more than $30 million in 2009-2010, and invested $18 million after Labor Day 2010 alone” to ensure statehouse victories in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.

“The rationale was straightforward,” reads the memo. “Controlling the redistricting process in these states would have the greatest impact on determining how both state legislative and congressional district boundaries would be drawn. Drawing new district lines in states with the most redistricting activity presented the opportunity to solidify conservative policymaking at the state level and maintain a Republican stronghold in the U.S. House of Representatives for the next decade.”

The Senate’s most senior member lamented the utter failure of the so-called “War on Drugs” and other draconian criminal justice policies Wednesday morning. During an address on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s 2013 agenda, Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) expressed alarm over high rates of imprisonment, harsh mandatory minimum sentences and federal crackdowns of marijuana laws legal under state law. “We have imprisoned people who should not be there and we have wasted money that should be spent on other things,” he said.

There are too many people, too many young people, too many minorities, too many from the inner city who are serving time in jail for people who might have done the same thing but have the money to stay out and are not there. What I say is if you have a youngster in the inner city buying $100 worth of cocaine for example could end up going to prison for years. If you have somebody on Wall Street buying the same 100 dollars from their local dealer, if they’re caught, they’ll be reprimanded and they may even have to do on Park Avenue a week of public service. That’s not right.

I wonder how many examples of armed uprisings against tyrants there are in which said rebels were simply squashed like flies by said tyrant who retained his power? I mean, the Kurds of northern Iraq were armed. They even had a well-regulated militia (the Peshmerga). A fat lot of good it did them when Saddam Hussein just bombed them with chemical weapons….

No militia has ever been able to win a solely military campaign against a conventional military force. They might be able to generate a political solution, or gather enough support to become a conventional force of their own, but pure militia movements have always been crushed utterly.

The thinking (I dare not call it logic) is this: if you are convinced that Obama is out to repeal the 2nd Amendment and confiscate our guns, then what he has done is merely the first step in his strategy. (Remember that Wayne LaPierre has already warned us about this)

If you are a sane and normal person, then they are merely sane and normal steps to counter insane and abnormal conditions that the NRA has helped to create.

That gets waaaay too close to poll taxes and “intelligence tests” that the South used to use on black voters.

You cannot be subject to any arbitrary test to avail yourself of a right (like voting), and gun ownership is a right, whether you like it or not. We can have productive discussions on what types of arms should be allowed under that rubric, but you cannot be withheld from exercising a right or tested, measured and examined before the fact.
