Godwin’s law

Godwin’s law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin’s Law of Nazi Analogies) is an argument made by Mike Godwin in 1990[2] that has become an Internet adage. It states: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.” In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis.

Although in one of its early forms Godwin’s law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions, the law is now often applied to any threaded online discussion, such as forums, chat rooms and blog comment threads, and has been invoked for the inappropriate use of Nazi analogies in articles or speeches.

In 2008, just after Barack Obama was elected president, I gave a television interview regarding what the Obamas might expect on becoming the new first family. I was asked specifically how Malia and Sasha’s lives would change. For a start, I said, they won’t play outside anymore without armed guards.

I know something about that. For the eight years that my grandfather, Dwight Eisenhower, was president of the United States, I had Secret Service protection. Known as the “Diaper Detail,” these armed agents protected my sisters, brother and me from potential kidnappings or other targeted attacks. Such threats might be aimed at hurting us, but they would also strike a devastating blow to the president and possibly our national security.

I repeat: We had Secret Service protection because we were seen as potential targets.

That’s why any thinking person has to be disgusted by the National Rifle Association ad released Wednesday, suggesting that the president is an “elitist hypocrite” because his children have the benefit of armed protection at school and the nation’s children as a whole do not. This is absurd. The nation’s children are not individually at risk the way the Obama children are.

And the Obama girls are not exactly lucky to have a protection detail. […]

Pro tip: the reason I added an opening paragraph is because Twitter and Facebook and other social services use the opening words of an article when they create their little summaries. So it really helps the presentation if you include a few words about whatever it is you’re posting about.

It also works, if you’re just linking to something and don’t want to add anything, to make sure the first thing in the post is the quote from the linked article, so the excerpt that appears at Twitter/Facebook makes sense to read.

I had a great night tonight. Was in invited to dinner tonight with friends with Uwe von Schaman. The big 8 kicker of the Century and Miami Rookie of the year in 1979. It was awesome. We talked personally about sports injuries.
You know what was fucking irritating? We could only talk for maybe a minute and somebody would come up to the table and ask for an autograph or a picture. We never had a great conversation cause the the interruptions were constant. Now I know how celebrities feel about going out for a dinner or publicly and having no privacy at all. It so easy to laugh at their plight but I
Kind of felt sorry for him, We started talking about LCL and ACL knee injuries but really never was able to broach the topic much with him. If I was famous I’d probably just eat at home most the time with friends. What a pain.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey On Obamacare ‘Fascism’ Remark: ‘I Regret Using That Word’

Yesterday, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey made a splash when, an NPR interview, he characterized President Obama‘s Affordable Care Act as “fascism.” On Thursday, he walked back his remarks, saying he regretted using that word.

I was trying to distinguish it between socialism so I took the dictionary definition of fascism, which is when the means of production are still owned privately but the government controls it — that’s a type of fascism. However, I realize that that word has so much baggage associated with it from World War II, with Germany, with Italy and Spain, that’s a very provocative word, so I regret using it. What I do believe in is free enterprise capitalism, and I’d like to see our healthcare system really unleash the power of free enterprise capitalism to create innovation and healthcare progress. I don’t think we have that – I think we’re moving away from that. So I do regret using that word, I won’t be using it in the future.

The controversial remarks in question came in an interview with NPR’s Morning Edition. Speaking about the healthcare law, Mackey said:

Technically speaking, it’s more like fascism. Socialism is where the government owns the means of production. In fascism, the government doesn’t own the means of production, but they do control it — and that’s what’s happening with our health care programs and these reforms.

Clearly the guy doesn’t really understand either socialism or the ACA.

And for being a big believer in “the power of free enterprise”, I’ll just note that Whole Foods is serves a niche in food retail because they are just too expensive for the masses.

Simply put, every phobia in their lives, whether it’s natural, from their parents, friends, education, or social interactions, is seemingly coming to a head at this point in the country’s life.

Racism - which I think is an irrational fear and hatred that somebody born unlike you may be a better person than you. Black President is exhibit A.

Gun Phobia - There was always manufactured hysteria about the government confiscating weapons of the people. The NRA, as exhibit A, has made millions creating, marketing, and selling that fear. The mass-murders, including 20 children and 6 teachers in a school has prompted government action (however milquetoast it may be) on weapons. This has given credence, however ridiculous it may be, to the idea that the government will eventually confiscate all weapons.

Homophobia - The fear of gays (I’d say it’s probably 95% about gay males). For one reason or another, bigots and homophobes hate gay people. Exhibit A, gay marriage and the repeal of DADT. Who knows exactly what they’re afraid of, but I’d guess they’re afraid that somebody they hate could possibly be happy. It’s in the same sphere as racism; i.e. how can somebody they think is beneath me socially/racially/sexually/economically be happy, or more successful, or a better person than them.

I’m sorry, I’m ranting, but there’s probably other things that play lesser roles (or major, I know there’s other phobias I forgot). Fear of communism/socialism, usually in the older folks who grew up with McCarthyism/Cuban Missile Crisis/Cold War.

But I’ve found, through my journeys on the internet and dealings with close relatives who are severely conservative that they, when you get down to the heart of almost every issue, are very, very frightened people. They fear change. Change of the outside world, but also of themselves. They cling to these beliefs, because if they didn’t, they’d collapse with grief that they’ve lived for however many years believing in a lie. So they lash out, sometimes violently, in order to protect those beliefs.

We Americans have all grown up knowing deep down that there is a nasty streak of bigotry & racism writhing just under the skin of our society, but through a combination of wishful thinking and social unacceptability we’ve been able to convince ourselves that the tentacles that occasionally poked through the scabs on the surface were all that remained.

The far right has now ripped off all the scabs, effectively removing the taboo and allowing the nastiness to slither out into the unforgiving daylight in all its depravity. We can no longer pretend that it’s just an occasional problem and have to confront it. It’s a huge problem, a shameful, malignant poison that we MUST find a cure for if we hope to continue successfully evolving as a nation.
