It’s a Hitlerfest!

Godwin’s law

Godwin’s law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin’s Law of Nazi Analogies) is an argument made by Mike Godwin in 1990[2] that has become an Internet adage. It states: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.” In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis.

Although in one of its early forms Godwin’s law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions, the law is now often applied to any threaded online discussion, such as forums, chat rooms and blog comment threads, and has been invoked for the inappropriate use of Nazi analogies in articles or speeches.

Continues.

The NRA’s diabolical ad

In 2008, just after Barack Obama was elected president, I gave a television interview regarding what the Obamas might expect on becoming the new first family. I was asked specifically how Malia and Sasha’s lives would change. For a start, I said, they won’t play outside anymore without armed guards.

I know something about that. For the eight years that my grandfather, Dwight Eisenhower, was president of the United States, I had Secret Service protection. Known as the “Diaper Detail,” these armed agents protected my sisters, brother and me from potential kidnappings or other targeted attacks. Such threats might be aimed at hurting us, but they would also strike a devastating blow to the president and possibly our national security.

I repeat: We had Secret Service protection because we were seen as potential targets.

That’s why any thinking person has to be disgusted by the National Rifle Association ad released Wednesday, suggesting that the president is an “elitist hypocrite” because his children have the benefit of armed protection at school and the nation’s children as a whole do not. This is absurd. The nation’s children are not individually at risk the way the Obama children are.

And the Obama girls are not exactly lucky to have a protection detail. […]

Obviously her grandfather was like Hitler.

64 Charles Johnson  Thu, Jan 17, 2013 6:00:28pm

Pro tip: the reason I added an opening paragraph is because Twitter and Facebook and other social services use the opening words of an article when they create their little summaries. So it really helps the presentation if you include a few words about whatever it is you’re posting about.

It also works, if you’re just linking to something and don’t want to add anything, to make sure the first thing in the post is the quote from the linked article, so the excerpt that appears at Twitter/Facebook makes sense to read.

New Jersey Gov. Christie: NRA ad on Obama daughters ‘reprehensible’

Accidental Godwin??

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey On Obamacare ‘Fascism’ Remark: ‘I Regret Using That Word’

Yesterday, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey made a splash when, an NPR interview, he characterized President Obama‘s Affordable Care Act as “fascism.” On Thursday, he walked back his remarks, saying he regretted using that word.

[…]

I was trying to distinguish it between socialism so I took the dictionary definition of fascism, which is when the means of production are still owned privately but the government controls it — that’s a type of fascism. However, I realize that that word has so much baggage associated with it from World War II, with Germany, with Italy and Spain, that’s a very provocative word, so I regret using it. What I do believe in is free enterprise capitalism, and I’d like to see our healthcare system really unleash the power of free enterprise capitalism to create innovation and healthcare progress. I don’t think we have that – I think we’re moving away from that. So I do regret using that word, I won’t be using it in the future.

The controversial remarks in question came in an interview with NPR’s Morning Edition. Speaking about the healthcare law, Mackey said:

Technically speaking, it’s more like fascism. Socialism is where the government owns the means of production. In fascism, the government doesn’t own the means of production, but they do control it — and that’s what’s happening with our health care programs and these reforms.

Clearly the guy doesn’t really understand either socialism or the ACA.

And for being a big believer in “the power of free enterprise”, I’ll just note that Whole Foods is serves a niche in food retail because they are just too expensive for the masses.

If it wouldn’t be such an epic disaster, I would totally pay money to see that.

Mackey is blaming the ACA when his problem is increased healthcare costs now, independent of ACA.

Whole Foods’ costly insurance plan illustrates why Mackey’s opposition to the Affordable Care Act was misguided. Like other major grocery store chains, Whole Foods is facing rampant inflation in health costs.
….snip….
Whatever the reason for Whole Foods’ health care woes, its solution is simple: Cover fewer workers. Another internal Whole Foods document obtained by Mother Jones, “Guidelines for a Part-Time Work Force,” notes that part-time workers are less likely than full-timers to qualify for or sign up for the company’s health plan—a major reason why part-timers cost less. “Whole Foods currently has 17% of their team members as part-time,” the document notes. “The ideal situation is to have 30% part-time. By shifting the workforce by 13% we expect to substantially improve the company expenses by 2011.”

In short, Whole Foods’ solution is to become part of the problem Mackey is complaining about. By increasing the portion of its workforce that goes without insurance, it is burdening the health care system and driving up costs for everyone else.

Economy May Be Fueling ‘Sugar Daddy’ Business, Site Suggests

As college costs continue their stubborn rise, and with work harder to come by during an anemic economic recovery, some students are resorting to a rather unusual measure in order to pay their college bills.

“Sugar Daddies,” wealthy older men who provide financial support to younger women in exchange for sex and companionship, have seen a rise in popularity among college students struggling to find a way to pay tuition.

College student membership on SeekingArrangement.com, a website that matches sugar daddies and sugar babies, has increased by 58 percent from December 2011 to December 2012.

“Currently, we have over 2 million members, 44 percent of which are college students,” Leroy Velasquez, public relations manager at SeekingArrangement.com, told ABC News. ”It’s very difficult to retain a part time or full-time job, especially when you have an academic life. With SeekingArrangement, we offer these types of relationships.”

Healthcare costs the big bucks. To address it, we need at least:

1) Big cuts to the military.

2) Real cost control (partial or full socialized medicine)

3) Increased taxes.

“…there are other curious aspects to the Nazi-gun-registration argument. In the first place, the argument is of an odd form for the NRA and pro-gun proponents. After all, the NRA stands for the proposition that “it’s not guns that kill people, it’s people who kill people.” The central idea here is that instrumentalities—in this case handguns—are just that: instrumentalities. They are not to be blamed for what people do wrongly with them. If you follow the logic of that argument, then you would expect a member of the NRA to respond in the same manner when confronted with the Nazi-gun-registration argument: “It’s not gun registration that produces gun confiscation and genocide, it’s people who do.”

More Gun-Bible-Literalists connections, from none other than Chuck Baldwin:

The Law Of The Sword [not yet cached by Google]

My last two columns which stated that my line in the sand has been drawn and I will NOT register or surrender my firearms, even if that makes me a lawbreaker (in the sight of government), have generated multiplied thousands of reader responses. And while the vast majority of these responses expressed complete agreement, there were several responses from professing Christians telling me that I was in violation of Holy Scripture for making such a stand.

[…]

Pray tell, how did Gideon deliver God’s people from their oppressors? By “the sword of the Lord and of Gideon.” How did Samson throw off the tyrants of his people? How did Barak and Jephthah defeat Israel’s enemies? By the sword! And note that each of these deliverers were commissioned and empowered by God to use the sword to destroy those tyrants that had ruled by the power of the sword. This was God’s promised judgment on oppressors for thousands of years before Jesus uttered this eternal truism in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The Second Amendment guarantee that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” is as much a sacred right as it is an American right. The principle of armed self-defense is rooted in both Natural and Revealed Law. That Barack Obama and Dianne Feinstein want to strip the American people of this right should be met with the most vociferous resistance, and that includes FROM CHRISTIANS!

[insert one of Baldwin’s many book sales pitches ]

I say once again: regardless of what laws are passed or not passed, I refuse to register or surrender my firearms–even if doing so makes me an outlaw. But as several readers pointed out to me: in such a scenario, I am not the outlaw; the ones who would try to disarm me are the outlaws. As I would not submit to a law that demanded that I surrender my spiritual sword (the Bible), neither will I submit to a law that demands that I surrender my physical sword (my firearms).

[…]

But wait… I thought we’re supposed to take the Bible at face value, the “plain reading”.

So, how come “sword” means a gunpowder firearm and not, well, as sword?

The NRA’s argument is:

3) Therefore, gun control bad.

in all seriousness, what the fuck is wrong with conservatives?

Simply put, every phobia in their lives, whether it’s natural, from their parents, friends, education, or social interactions, is seemingly coming to a head at this point in the country’s life.

Racism - which I think is an irrational fear and hatred that somebody born unlike you may be a better person than you. Black President is exhibit A.

Gun Phobia - There was always manufactured hysteria about the government confiscating weapons of the people. The NRA, as exhibit A, has made millions creating, marketing, and selling that fear. The mass-murders, including 20 children and 6 teachers in a school has prompted government action (however milquetoast it may be) on weapons. This has given credence, however ridiculous it may be, to the idea that the government will eventually confiscate all weapons.

Homophobia - The fear of gays (I’d say it’s probably 95% about gay males). For one reason or another, bigots and homophobes hate gay people. Exhibit A, gay marriage and the repeal of DADT. Who knows exactly what they’re afraid of, but I’d guess they’re afraid that somebody they hate could possibly be happy. It’s in the same sphere as racism; i.e. how can somebody they think is beneath me socially/racially/sexually/economically be happy, or more successful, or a better person than them.

I’m sorry, I’m ranting, but there’s probably other things that play lesser roles (or major, I know there’s other phobias I forgot). Fear of communism/socialism, usually in the older folks who grew up with McCarthyism/Cuban Missile Crisis/Cold War.

But I’ve found, through my journeys on the internet and dealings with close relatives who are severely conservative that they, when you get down to the heart of almost every issue, are very, very frightened people. They fear change. Change of the outside world, but also of themselves. They cling to these beliefs, because if they didn’t, they’d collapse with grief that they’ve lived for however many years believing in a lie. So they lash out, sometimes violently, in order to protect those beliefs.

We Americans have all grown up knowing deep down that there is a nasty streak of bigotry & racism writhing just under the skin of our society, but through a combination of wishful thinking and social unacceptability we’ve been able to convince ourselves that the tentacles that occasionally poked through the scabs on the surface were all that remained.

The far right has now ripped off all the scabs, effectively removing the taboo and allowing the nastiness to slither out into the unforgiving daylight in all its depravity. We can no longer pretend that it’s just an occasional problem and have to confront it.
