NRA Cites #Breitbart.com to Falsely Claim School Attended by Obama’s Daughters Has ‘11 Armed Guards’

How right wing lies spread through the echo chamber
Wingnuts • Views: 48,938

The National Rifle Association’s ugly ad targeting President Obama’s children accuses him of being a “hypocrite” because the school his daughters attend has “11 armed guards.” The ad also attacks NBC journalist David Gregory for the same alleged “hypocrisy.”

And to back up this claim they cite the right wing attack dogs of breitbart.com.

Here’s that article at breitbart.com, by A.W.R. Hawkins: SCHOOL OBAMA’S DAUGHTERS ATTEND HAS 11 ARMED GUARDS!

Some interesting news has broken in the wake of the latest push for gun control by President Obama and Senate Democrats: Obama sends his kids to a school where armed guards are used as a matter of fact.

The school, Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, has 11 security officers and is seeking to hire a new police officer as we speak.

If you dismiss this by saying, “Of course they have armed guards — they get Secret Service protection,” then you’ve missed the larger point.

The larger point is that this is standard operating procedure for the school, period. And this is the reason people like NBC’s David Gregory send their kids to Sidwell, they know their kids will be protected from the carnage that befell kids at a school where armed guards weren’t used (and weren’t even allowed).

Shame on President Obama for seeking more gun control and for trying to prevent the parents of other school children from doing what he has clearly done for his own. His children sit under the protection guns afford, while the children of regular Americans are sacrificed.

Notice that there’s no link, and no source quoted for this claim by A.W.R. Hawkins.

That’s because the claim is totally false. Made up. Bogus. An outright lie. A rancid howler.

According to the Washington Post, in the real world Sidwell Friends School has exactly zero armed guards on duty.

The National Rifle Association is airing a television ad (and has on its website this four-minute video) that says the private school that President Obama’s daughters attend, Sidwell Friends School, has 11 armed guards. It doesn’t.

In fact, it has no armed guards. My Post colleague Glenn Kessler, who writes The Fact Checker column, wrote about the issue here and quoted Ellis Turner, associate head of Sidwell Friends, as saying: “Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.”

Parents and students say they have never seen one either.

The president’s children are protected by Secret Service agents, which is required by federal law, but that is not the same thing as armed school resource officers.

The Fact Checker, who hands out “Pinocchios” depending on how accurate — or inaccurate — a particular story is, gave the NRA and its ad the worst possible rating, four Pinocchios. Whereas three Pinocchios are given for “significant factual error and/or obvious contradictions,” four Pinocchios are given for “whoppers.”

This is a great example of the counter-factual closed loop echo chamber of the right. A Breitbart hack just makes up a false accusation out of thin air, and from there it propagates throughout the right wing universe with no regard whatsoever for the truth, ending up in an attack ad by one of the most powerful right wing lobbies in the country.

Itis accepted that the President and his family are protected by armed guards. It is not accepted, nor is it acceptable to a lot of Americans - that our schoolchildren should be protected by armed guards at all times.

My take is, who cares if they did have armed guards employed by the school.
It is a private school, that costs 30K a year per student.

Dixie Gun and Knife and Wound Show

Accidental shooting at Raleigh gun show

An eyewitness told ABC11 that a person brought a loaded semi-automatic pistol to a security check-in area around 1 p.m. Saturday. The gun owner reportedly removed the gun’s slide out magazine, but there was still a round in the gun’s chamber.

When a law enforcement officer went to secure the weapon with a zip tie through the trigger area and around the grip, the gun went off as the zip tie was pulled tight.

Two or three people were injured. Varying accounts said a person was shot in the hand, another in the arm and possibly a third.

As I just posted in the last thread, this combination of utterly insane incitement over guns and racist hysteria has me wondering if the President is going to be assassinated over this.

As Jon Stewart pointed out in his expose of anti-enforcement laws there’s real legislative work to be done on guns, but the gun sellers, the Nazis and other racists have all been inciting that the scary black man is about to take away your guns, destroy the constitution and rape your… never mind they’re not against rape … they’ve been at this for 4 years.

Hell they probably started before Obama was even elected the first time.

By now they’ve taken it so far that the demand for guns outstrips the supply! They can’t PRODUCE guns fast enough to supply the hysterical, crazed, racist derps in this country.

Has that ever happened before?

I’m worrying that we’re well past the point where racist nuts will be shooting at the president and his aides.

Anger, violent thoughts: Are you too sick to own a gun?

But as lawmakers rush to restrict that access in the wake of recent mass shootings, mental health experts warn of unintended consequences: from gun owners avoiding mental health treatment to therapists feeling compelled to report every patient who expresses a violent thought.

“Many patients express some idea of harm to other people, everything from, ‘I wish I could rip my boss limb from limb,’ to, ‘I have a gun and want to blow that guy away,’” said Paul Applebaum, director of the Division of Law, Ethics, and Psychiatry at Columbia University.

In my opinion you should do iterative development by building on bases of complete, documented, rock solid tools. You work on coming up with solid tools and abtractions and languages/apis that express your problem space elegantly and readably and build from there.

You spend significant time documenting code before you check anything in.

No one should ever have to read code.

No code should ever be written without a plan on how it will be finished.

The plan “how do we get from here to complete” should be in writing.

The algorithms and all of the pitfalls should be in writing.

12 Year Old Shoots Home Intruder

BRYAN COUNTY, OK—A day off for fall break was anything but relaxing for a 12-year old Bryan County girl, when an intruder broke into her home on Michael Avenue.

Deputies say, the girl was home alone when a man she’d never seen before, rang the front doorbell. They say when no one answered the door, the man went around to the back of the house and kicked a door open. That’s when authorities say, the girl grabbed a gun and hid in a bathroom closet.

“He had worked his way all the way through the house and into the bathroom. And from what we understand, he was turning the doorknob when she fired through the door.” Says Bryan County Under sheriff, Ken Golden.

After the man was shot, The 12- year old ran out of the closet and called for help. Authorities say she kept her cool despite the potential danger. “She was very brave, she stayed on the phone with the dispatcher the whole time - talked all the way through it and was still on the phone with dispatch when we got into the house.” Says Golden.

Deputies tell KTEN, the man was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Plano, Texas and he’s expected to survive.

I can deal with the concept of having guns to defend oneself at home.

problem comes when it comes to guns being carried in public ostensibly to defend other people. it takes a lot of training, experience, sound judgement and nerves of steel to pull a gun in a situation like that and not cause even more problems.

We don’t know for a fact that things wouldn’t have worked out OK if she hadn’t had the gun. The intruder might have been scared off by the presence of anyone in the home. Having gone to the front door first, he thought the house was empty. Since the house obviously featured both front and back doors she might well have been able to simply leave by the front door when the back door was kicked in, and have called the police.

The fact that one person might have been saved by a gun is great for that one person, but looking at statistics that gun could easily have hurt or killed an innocent person as well.

I’m kind of conflicted about this story. I’m glad the girl is okay and that things worked out for her, but I am also sort of concerned that a 12 year old has that easy of access to a gun.

But if she didn’t, things wouldn’t have worked out okay.

Thoughts, fellow lizards?

I can understand your conflicted feeling. In my personal experience, I have this anecdote.

When I was 11, my folks trusted me enough to leave me at home alone while they went out to the Moose Lodge for an evening of whatever frivolity Moose Lodge members get up to. My father instructed me that if someone should break into the house, I was to:

a) procure his pistol (a .44 AutoMag)
b) call the police
c) hide
and
d) if the intruder happened upon me before five-oh arrived, if the intruder was unarmed, detain him at gunpoint until the police showed up or if the intruder was armed, shoot him.

My father taught me to shoot starting at the age of five. He himself was a superb marksman, and he passed those skills on to me by teaching me. I can honestly say that I knew what at “double-tap” was by the age of nine. I started off shooting with long rifles, then worked up to shotguns, then finally handguns.

I always knew where my father had his guns…..in his closet. I knew where the ammo was; also in the closet. I knew where the AutoMag was…in his nightstand. It never occurred to me once, in my youth or since, to pick up a gun and start blasting. That’s murder.

That’s from my experience. Your mileage may vary.

re: #72 Sol Berdinowitz

I can deal with the concept of having guns to defend oneself at home.

problem comes when it comes to guns being carried in public ostensibly to defend other people. it takes a lot of training, experience, sound judgement and nerves of steel to pull a gun in a situation like that and not cause even more problems.

Precisely this. In the home, you KNOW all the variables (or should know). You have more control over the variable. You DON’T have that control out in the open or public….and too many gun advocates confuse the two situations.

I’m glad she’s okay, and I have no sympathy for the intruder; but I think we have a new meme for the “All Americans must be armed to the teeth at all times” crowd.

here is the ‘agile manifesto’:

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

in practice, the agile process rules individuals, your every hour of work is subjected to comprehensive documentation, and, as you can see in the last point, the idea of having anything so old fashioned as a ‘plan’ is looked on with disdain

Agile process is designed more for the QA/Testing phase than for the programming side, because it allows for greater flexibility than a static process does, which is invaluable for eliminating software defects.

Now, let me tell you (and all other lizards) the story of how I learned guns aren’t toys.

Prior to letting me actually handle a real firearm, my father arranged with a buddy of his, Al, to take a little tour of the L.A. County Morgue (mind you, this was in the 70s when things were a little…..wackier). Al worked there as an M.E. So, Al and my dad showed me five corpses of people who had died of firearms injuries; homicide, accidental death, of course suicide, and a little kid about my age who took it in the head from a .12 gauge.

After I finished puking and crying, I had a lot of respect for what a firearm can do the human body. And I’ve always treated them accordingly. You can argue my father perhaps needlessly traumatized me….however, I would call it a valuable and instructive lesson. When a person sees what a firearm can do, the sheer damage a bullet can wreak, that person will never, ever forget that memory, and consequently be far less likely to use a firearm in an inappropriate fashion in the future.

That’s the dark side of firearms instruction - seeing the consequences with your own eyes of what death by the gun looks like. And once you’ve seen it, I can assure, you will never forget it.

Ok, here’s a clip from AlJazeera (yes, I know) that looks into one little corner of what is happening in Syria:

Syrians decimate forests to survive winter

The story is nominally about deforestation ( a problem that is itself of great importance), but it covers more than that. In the last segment the reporter covers how this little village is trying to fend off government forces, and shows the weaponry the village has.

It would seem to be an argument in favor of the gun nuts and their “appreciation” of weapons, but then one has to scrutinize exactly what those weapons the Syrian villagers are trying to use - rockets and rocket launchers. That’s because real military these days are not afraid of hand guns or rifles (even automatic). When militaries have armored personnel carriers and aircraft any citizen with a little gun is not going to be able to fend off said government.

iterative development is what i have been doing for 27 years

one of the biggest lies promoted by agile is that the only alternative to agile is waterfall or cowboys

the last time i encountered anybody stupid enough to attempt waterfall was in about the year of 1996

For me, the last time I saw the waterfall method was on my last year of Computer Engineering (2005). The professor that lectured the Software Engineering class swore by waterfall, and we had to make our projects following that methodology. My project in particular was going to be a great FUBAR if it was done following the waterfall method, because, more due to our curiosity, we found out we didn’t have the expertise to complete the project because it required a very expensive library[1] to make it work. When we argued that we had to add this to the expectations, the professor said that it wasn’t necessary at that stage. That when we’d gotten to implementation (!!!), then we’d have to go back and amend everything to include this.

I personally didn’t like his “solution”. It was going to inflate the costs, everyone will be blind-sighted, and we’d lose valuable time learning the library. Plus having to go over the gazillion pages of documentation to force this in.

[1] IIRC, the license was over $1,000. It was really worth every penny tho.

I really like what i said above. Agile sounds wrong because it says “iterative” but doesn’t trust iterative processes to happen DURING actual coding rather than DURING MEETINGS

It’s still “plan everything to excess before hand” but in smaller chunks

I think iterative should be bottom up, and “document everything to death as you check it in”. Planning in meetings is good, I’ve seen people refuse to do that and cripple projects but it should be less extreme than described.

From that and the other articles I’ve seen:
No, she wasn’t trained in home defense by her parents.
The weapon, a Glock 40, was in the parents’ bedroom in an unlocked location.
Given she called her parents after he’d broken in, I’d suggest trying to flee wasn’t in the options. Mom’s the one who told her to grab the gun and hide in the closet.

OT: But I think some Lizards might find this interesting.

I was digging through some boxes sorting out a closet and came across some old jewelry. Some of it mine, but some obviously my father’s or more likely grandfather’s. Took some pictures and figured I would post a few just for discussion - and possible identification since my jewelry knowledge is minimal and I figure some of this stuff is “rose gold” or something like that.

heh heh, so his plan was “manipulate management and spring costs on them later”

That method was too advanced for students. You weren’t cynical enough and experienced enough to know that they screw you all the time, you have to screw them back occasionally. :p

That’s something I learned later. ;-)

But still, it left me a bad taste, because, theoretically speaking, I was going to be blind-sighted about this issue until at least the implementation. Identifying the core issue early (the need of an expensive and complicated library) had several benefits for me: getting the team to start learning the tool early without the “OMG!!1 WE HAVE A DEADLINE TO MEET!!1” pressure on us, securing the money for the library ahead of time, and have an understanding that there may be additional issues.

There are ways to screw back if needed, but holding back on researching the needed tools is unnecessary.

That is okay. If I recall D Atlas is still on Sansom St. They are very reliable appraisers (they have GIA certification). They can identify and give you a dollar value for insurance purposes.

Another couple of rings. One is a plain silver band that I suspect is a rhodium plated white gold band that was probably my grandfather’s. The other one I am not sure who it belonged to.

“Radical Survivalism Webzine”

Holy shit, look at THAT site

Yes. Count on the criminalization to possess just about every gun you can think of. Not only restrictions, but actual criminalization of possessing a banned firearm. I heard this directly from the highest of my sources. Plans were made in the 90′s but were withheld. Now, it’s a new day, a new time, and they are riding the wave of emotion from Sandy Hook., which, by the way and as tragic as it was, well, it stinks to high heaven. I mean there are many things wrong there, and first reports are fast disappearing. The narrative is being changed. Look, there is something wrong with Sandy Hook, but if you write it, you’ll be called a kook or worse.

But Sandy Hook, there’s something very wrong there. But I am hearing that won’t be the final straw. There will be another if they think it’s necessary.

…and the NRA logo in the sponsor sidebar! Is that for real?

Facts are completely irrelevant. The only things that matter are what they can get a sufficient number of people to believe.

This is deeply ironic, since right wingers that are familiar with the post-modern critique of objectivity completely reject it, while by their actions they completely deny reality on a scale undreamed of in philosophy.

Two similar incidents occurred at entirely separate gun shows in the Midwest, one in the Cleveland suburb of Medina, Ohio and the other at the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. In Ohio, the local ABC affiliate reports that one individual was brought to a hospital by EMS, and in Indiana Channel 8 WISH says that an individual shot himself in the hand while trying to reload his gun in the show parking lot. That brings the tally to 4 victims of gun violence so far at three different gun shows during the country’s first Gun Appreciation Day.

Last night I was watching a video of some guy that modified the trigger mechanism on his Glock to make it easier to fire. In this video he takes the Glock from his holster and drops it to the ground twice just to show that his modification still provides the Glock safety feature. Anyway, the gun didn’t go off the two times he dropped it. It was loaded with live ammo. Another accident waiting to happen.

In terms of wealth and political power, we can say that the Sidwell Friends parents, many of them, are in the upper 1% or .1% or whatever. In the wake of the recent arguments about armed guards in the schools, are these Sidwell Friends parents clamoring for Sidwell to hire armed guards? If they are, they’ve been awfully quiet about it; I haven’t noticed anything in the news.

Could it be that these powerful, connected people are happy with Sidwell as it is today, with no armed guards? I have to wonder if some of these parents are also Republican politicians.

I wonder what these Sidwell parents think of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his armed volunteers in the Arizona schools. I suspect they’re glad their kids aren’t there.

I’m fine with realpolitik but I really wish someone would eventually forgo this unnecessary and gross ritual.
For top donors, inauguration means access, influence and angling for next big job

This year, the sky’s the limit on gifts, corporations are good people and the official roster of donors won’t include addresses or amounts for up to 90 days. The list includes companies such as AT&T, Microsoft and Southern Co., a utility that says it gave $100,000. Individual supporters include donors such as Irwin Jacobs, founder of the tech company Qualcomm, who had already given more than $2 million to groups supporting Obama.

Administration officials have said the loosened donation rules were designed to reach out to businesses whose executives felt spurned in the first term and to ease pressure on Democratic donors who feel squeezed dry after the campaign. After the inaugural celebration’s expenses are paid, the remaining money could be used for an Obama foundation that would support his presidential library and other projects after he leaves office.

“It is just the wrong thing to do,” said Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21, a nonprofit group that pushes for transparency in government and campaign finance reform. “This is symbolic of doing business as usual in Washington, from an administration that has said it did not want to follow that path. It doesn’t make sense.”

Is there really a need to do this? I can’t think of one.

That video reminds PJ media had an article the other day where they had some expert explain that mass murderers don’t come from the sort of background that conservatives like to blame on everything. They’re not disadvantaged, not black, not from single parents families. Oh the mystery.

Conservatives really are obsessed with blaming everything on sluts and blacks and trying to get everyone who isn’t white and rich to stop breeding.

… anyway their theory was that mass murderers and serial killers have something emotionally or mentally wrong, and if they WERE black or something they’d act out in smaller ways when they were kids and end up in jail as troublemakers instead of stewing under good conditions till they go off all at once.

Latest news on the debt ceiling

We have had no budget since Obama was elected because House Republicans would never agree to fund medicare, secular public education, the EPA or I don’t know, any government agency started after humanity discovered that viruses cause disease (late 18th century).

Sooo the Republicans are saying that they will only raise the debt ceiling (and only 3 months worth) if the senate makes a real budget.

They’re trying to force actual monetary control into the granny-choking hands of the House Republican killers.

Both sides in that debate seem to have reversed themselves on the issue of dismissing an article based on it’s source. Geller’s a hateful idiot, Blumenthal’s a crackpot bigot, and the PA is fucked up and probably broken beyond repair. There are enough reliable sources for each one of those opinions without linking to other idiots as source material.

But if you remember, he said to the media he was a veteran. However, this is a quote from his MySpace page:

About me:
My name is joesph kelley…..im 6’1, i have black hair, brown eyes, and average build. I like guns……i own many of them, and hope to acquire many more in the future. My hobbies include; shooting guns, cleaning guns, reading about guns, holding guns, playing xbox along with paintball and airsoft. I also love to read books about various wars. At some point, i plan on going into the marines. All of that pretty much sums me up…..so message me if ud like to learn more, and btw OBAMA WILL FAIL! (But I hope he doesn’t fuck us to badly when he does.)

I bolded the relevant portion. If he was in the Marines (or armed forces) I would presume he would’ve posted some photos from his time there. It makes me wonder if he was a veteran at all.

I just heard. Him and Weaver within 24 hours. Very sad day for baseball. Stan was one of my grandmother’s favorites.

you are 100% in favor of The high crime rate like the City of Chicago. Chicago has the Dream you Desire, 100% gun control! And the highest rate of Homicide.

Did you see the video on the Weaver page? One of his epic rants.

If wingnuts think Sandy Hook was fake, that Obama’s birth certificate is a fake, why do they think Benghazi was real?

Sandy Hook Truthers are far less numerous than Birthers.

Watching it now. This is great. My favorite Earl story involves the late Mike Flanagan. Flanny balked and Earl comes out and asks Flanny straight out if he balked or not. Flanny nods in the affirmative but Earl still argues with the umpire. He was a great manager. I am glad he got to see one last Orioles playoff team this past year.

Is this a trick question?

Propositions that are politically useful for the GOP are deemed to be true.

Propositions that are not politically useful for the GOP are deemed to be false.

Nah the Masons dude. They’re also why the Star Wars sequels were so bad. I mean I’ve got like no proof of this man but isn’t that the proof? I’m just asking the tough questions that everyone else is too much of a sheep to ask.

re: #253 Killgore Trout

Both sides in that debate seem to have reversed themselves on the issue of dismissing an article based on it’s source. Geller’s a hateful idiot, Blumenthal’s a crackpot bigot, and the PA is fucked up and probably broken beyond repair. There are enough reliable sources for each one of those opinions without linking to other idiots as source material.

I’m not that familiar with Blumenthal…what has he done to deserve being lumped in with demented paranoid racist slime like Geller?

Nothing. This is Killgore doing his false equivalence thing again.

I don’t agree with everything Blumenthal writes, but comparing him to Pamela Geller is stupid.
