15-Year Old Boy Kills 5 People in New Mexico With Assault Rifle

And again
Crime • Views: 35,767

There are no words: ‘Horrific’ New Mexico Shooting Leaves 5 Dead; Investigators Arrest 15-Year-Old.

(CNN) — Sheriff’s investigators combed through what one called a “horrific” crime scene Sunday after the shooting deaths of five people, three of them children, outside Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Each of victims had been shot multiple times, Bernalillo County sheriff’s Lt. Sid Covington, and one of the weapons used was what he described as an assault rifle. Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston said a 15-year-old boy, who “may be a family member,” has been charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

“Initially responding deputies entered the home and found the five deceased inside the residence, so obviously it was a very gruesome scene,” Covington told reporters. There was no indication of a motive so far, he said.

“I’ve never seen a scene quite like this,” he added.

Investigators did not released the names of the victims Sunday afternoon, saying the process of formally identifying the remains was still going on. But they said the dead included a man, a woman and three grade-school-age children — two girls and a boy.

Why is “Horrific” in scare quotes?

Apparently it’s a direct quote from one investigator.

Selfish brats, “clinging to their guns and religion.”

Meanwhile, the sentiment from these “patriotic” shitbirds is “fuck everyone else, just as long as I get mine.”

Awful.

I have to ask, how much of this was happening and underreported before recent
events caused firearm-violence to come to the forefront of public attention?

Well, it’s pretty much like clockwork. A mass shooting (4+ killed) occurs once every two weeks. It just happens to be coincidence that the shooter apparently used some kind of assault weapon.

Oh, and 15 years old. Can’t wait to hear how he got his hands on that properly secured firearm. Or what his justification for the shooting was.

And expect the gun activists to deny and avoid or otherwise project. It’s what they do.

It’s ridiculous and shameful that the president is going to have to fight the GOP to take even a few modest steps in the right direction to stop these kinds of tragedies being part of everyday life.

This isn’t the result of video games.

A strategy is needed to hang these horrible crimes on the “gun lobby” until they are willing to take some real steps to find solutions.

We do need to better understand why young men seems so vunerable to forces that lead them to these crimes.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do have a son who is a young man. He’s a good kid, but it seems so many are—or were until something changed, or was missed or the system or parents failed them.

While we can’t reach every young man, we also can’t remove every possible way for them to act out.

It takes a multi-pronged approach —research to establish effective policy and to limit access.

We already understand why young men (and women) do stupid things; which is why we restrict their rights to many things.

What we don’t do is make sure that in the worst case they don’t have access to mass murder weapons; often provided by their parents who also stupidly had children that they had no ability to raise or control.

Absolutely agree. I read something a while back about a theory that when kids are growing their brain size changing, the body growing, hormones etc is thought to be part of the reason young boys/men are more prone to these dark mood swings.

One of my nephews was going through some of that when he was around 17-19 and there was some very real worry that he would be commit suicide. Mostly from his sister a couple of years older.

I’m talking about a really nice and gentle kid much more so than almost any I’ve met. I told him about what I read and it really changed him. He grew out of it and now he’s a working stiff with just regular run of the mill misery. :)

If I worked in marketing for the financial or petroleum industries I’d much rather the media devote massive attention to every single incident involving assault weapons rather than our massive and growing class inequality, or especially the fact that our society and world’s unsustainable energy policies are pulling the trigger on future generations.

Which isn’t to say that we shouldn’t enact stricter, more sensible policies on guns. Mandating background checks, safe storage / transport requirements and restrictions on the most criminally conducive weapons makes a lot of sense. Spending weeks and months trying to pass an all encompassing bill that runs anathema to the central majority of red state identity doesn’t, not while they control the House and hate the President with such a white hot intensity. Break the issues up into individual bills and offer the Republican leadership an opportunity to vote up or down on each individual fix. Then move on to the structural energy issues that will, if left unaddressed, lead intractably lead to millions, possibly billions of deaths in the medium term future.

Only young men can stop gun violence
January 13, 2013
By Solomon Jones

Every American should be outraged, but especially here in Philadelphia. Our city’s homicide rate is the worst among our country’s largest cities. According to CNN, more than 80 percent of Philadelphia’s homicides are committed with a firearm. But no one is talking about the fact that the victims and perpetrators are young men; boys who understand that their lives could end at any moment; that their deaths won’t result in media coverage; that their families and few others will grieve.

We don’t quite know what to say to them, so we shake our heads in disappointment. But while we cluck our tongues at their fatalism, our sons are dying daily.

I, for one, am tired of the endless debate about gun violence. I’m tired of liberals clamoring for more restrictive gun laws. Laws alone will not solve the problem. I’m tired of the silly conservative argument that arming teachers makes schools safer. Armed teachers have no place in classrooms. I’m tired of the NRA putting profits before people, and tired of politicians retreating to their ideological corners. Our children’s lives are at stake.

We have to talk to our young men. We have to find out why they’re so willing to let violence destroy not just their own lives, but the lives of everyone around them. We have to find out why they’re so sure that they won’t live past 21. We have to learn why they can’t control their impulses. We can’t do so by just studying them. We must do so by talking to them.

I totally empthasize with the author’s frustations and dismay.

Addressing the deep inequalities of our financial/economic system, or trying to execute a plan for a sustainable future by changing energy and land use, are probably just as difficult.

People are afraid of change.

The gun nuts take refuge in some antiquated but legally binding paragraph. Getting them to accept that it’s not the 18th century any more is not a trivial challenge.

People don’t want to change.

Yes, our economic and financial systems are so constructed to greatly benefit the very wealthy, but at the same time how many people are putting their hopes on flipping their house for a massive profit in order to give them some “aspirational” life-style, or those poor who play the lottery week after week in the hopes that their “ship will come in”? In such face of dis-reality, I can’t see how any President can really get traction on changing laws wrt taxes and banking.

I do criticize the President on not being aggressive enough in addressing these issues, but at the same time I realize that even with the best of intentions he’ll only be able to make small changes on the edges.

A while back I read an article/essay regarding the issue. All I remember is the theme: Young Men need Old Men. My son is an only child and at home with Mom alot and a Dad who travels for work. We got him involved in great DoJo and took advantage of family friends who he called “uncle”. We went to a all male high-school and participated in JROTC.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the young man he has become. He thinks before he acts.

I guess the point is, that my husband and I actively looked for ways to help us parent our son. Some we agreed with, a lot we didn’t. In the end, it was up to him to make the right choices. All we could do was try actually make sure he understood the choice.

How do you get a society of millions of kids to understand the choice?

Computer virus, some sort of electrical impuse jammer?

I’d be more concerned with viral or airborne warfare than traditional tanks and such. I just have a hard time with the whole “Red Dawn” scenerio. I think if the country is going to be attacked it won’t be with guns and bombs.

Sometimes, the kids just need to know they have a safety valve of unconditional love!

Makes me think one of the real issues with these shootings is the families, the lack of respect for firearms safety, ease of access for so many and much more. More often than not these things are a combination of many things not just one or the other.

Which is why the NRA and other right wingers threatening civil war over guns tend to be the same demographic as the TP: overwhelmingly white and generally older, male, non-urban.

The hyper-literal fetishizing of the “intent of the founders” simply doesn’t resonate the same way with most non-whites and many women, who realize that their counterparts at the time of the founding were either second-class citizens or property. Thus they’re less likely to see the Constitution as a gift from God to never be questioned.

Like the TP and the current GOP, demographics probably don’t favor the NRA over the long term.

Type 59s aren’t modern armor. The newer Chinese tanks are far fewer in number, but are much less vulnerable to flame-based attacks and have much better vision systems.

Most first world armor units have NBC capabilities to keep them relatively safe from those threats.

We do need to better understand why young men seems so vunerable to forces that lead them to these crimes.

My take?

There is a lot of pressure on young men to ‘be somebody.’ Something that very few of them ever get to be.

Faced with the existential crisis the realization of this causes there are three ways to react: acceptance, despair and violence.

Acceptance is, thankfully, the most common reaction. People learn to accept what they have rather than freak about what they don’t.

Despair leads to self harming behaviours, suicide and addiction being common. This is the path I went down for far too long.

Violence is similar to despair, but it manifests in behaviour that harms others. In its extreme form, and with the easy availability of firearms, the result is mass murder.

I think very few women are mass murderers because in many ways they have it good now. Compared to what a woman’s life used to be like things are much better these days. Also women, if they face the identity crisis, are more likely to take the despair route. I don’t know if that is cultural or genetic though.

My thoughts.

I’m just going to put this out here, in friendly territory. A terrible thing that happened a few years ago. A person I know, and like, had a psychotic episode and tried to kill herself and her two little girls.
There was no gun in the house.
She used a knife.
A knife was not very effective.
Her kids are fine now. She, of course, is in prison. Still, I repeat, her kids are fine. They even forgive her. They will have long and I hope happy lives before them. If there had been a gun in the house, no doubt all three of them would be dead.

So I just have so very little sympathy for the guns-for-safety argument. Guns make you massively more unsafe. That the NRA has managed to convince so many people otherwise is one of the saddest aspects of modern American culture.

Senate Democrats promise to pass a budget. Why is this a big deal?

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made headlines Sunday morning by promising that Senate Democrats will write and pass a full tax and spending bill by the March 1 deadline for the next budget. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for us because in our budget that we will pass, we will have tax reform, which many of my Republican colleagues like. But it’s going to include revenues,” Schumer said on “Meet The Press.”

……
…the Senate hasn’t passed a budget since April 2009, and even then, the tax and spending legislation didn’t receive a single Republican vote in Congress.

…the Senate hasn’t passed a budget since April 2009 …

Our government is dysfunctional. Our system of governance is broken, and outdated.

But! You might exclaim … everything seems so normal in everyday life.

Consider this - as a nation we’ve amassed tremendous wealth by almost any measure one can figure. This won’t disappear overnight. Today’s dysfunction will work out over decades of struggle and frustration. A small problem today can linger for years without bringing about a major calamity… and then one day - boom.

Complex systems don’t behave in simple linear fashions. This year is like last year, and next year will be like this year… and that will seem like the case - until suddenly it doesn’t.

I doubt we’ll see any big(ger) drama in this country till the middle of the century, and most of us will be dead by then. The last half of the century could be a wilder ride.

And Callaghan was harsher on the Falklands. When the Argentinians became aggressive in the mid-to-late 1970’s, he deployed Naval Forces as “Come and Fucking Try Measure.”

Then, Thatcher started slashing at the military, which led to the Argentinans percieving a weakness, and attacking.

And now that the Tories are back in Office, they are once again shreding the once proud British Military.

Look up “The Happiness Patrol.” While overly heavy handed, the 7th Doctor’s speech at the end for the Expy of Thatcher has come to pass in many regards.

You make the assumption that the alternative to the left is the 19th Century, or at least that I believe that. I don’t. But what I do believe is the left of late 1970’s Britain had become coercive, shutting things down whenever it didn’t get its way and sometimes just to demonstrate its power, and most decidedly self-centered, advancing its organizations without concern for how the bills would be paid. Margaret thatcher knew that was a recipe for societal collapse, so she took action and that action gave the UK a chance. But the cultural damage already done was not easily undone. The damage to the UK’s system of education is really more of a local and cultural matter rather than something attributable to Mrs. Thatcher.

Sorry, but that’s sexism. The nut in Aurora wasn’t frustrated by lack of proper manly pursuits. He was a nut. there are plenty of positive ways to express masculine drive out there. Fire fighters, trauma surgeons, EMTs, navy SEALS, etc. testosterone combined with crap parenting and access to powerful weapons, well, that is a toxic mix. Eric Harris’s parents thought their boy just needed their encouragement in his “hobbies,” which included exploding stuff and shooting guns. The Newtown shooter’s mother apparently felt the same way. I’d guess too many disturbed boys have parents who believe “boys will be boys” and either don’t intervene or actually encourage the violent pathology.

“What’s wrong with American boys” sounds like “what’s wrong with Muslims” or “what’s wrong with Black men” to me. It is gender profiling.

It’s big deal because the Senate punted on this task 3 years running. If they’re finally ready to get to work, then so much the better.

The reason that democrats don’t try to pass a budget is that the only budget that House Republicans would agree to would destroy the country as surely as surrendering to Al Qaeda would. It would destroy every social program, renege on every promise the government has ever made (Social Security for instance) end all environmental oversight, end enforcement of all education standards.

So, because they’re not evil bastards, this administration doesn’t go to the evil tea party creeps for spending authorization and instead coasts by on authorization given by the previous congress under the Bush administration that wasn’t pure fucking regressive evil.

Don’t blame the Democrats, blame the racist idiot masses who reacted to Obama’s election by rising up in 2010 and put people too fucking stupid to live in the House.

I get the sense lately that at least a few within the GOP are trying to distance themselves from the extremists in their party. This is a shift from the “For us or against us” mentality we saw throughout Obama’s entire first term. I think it is important to acknowledge that shift and reach out to the moderates in some way. To simply label every Republican as a dangerous extremist is akin to how people like Pamela Gellar perceive and portray Muslims. It should be a push-pull strategy. Push the dingbats farther away, Pull the ones at the other end toward you. Force the ones in between to pick one side or the other.

Or hear is an especially nasty one:

In 1974, after Patricia Hearst was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), the SLA demanded that the Hearst family provide groceries to poor and minority areas. When the food-ransom went to poor and minority communities, Then-Governor Reagan joked, “It’s just too bad we can’t have an epidemic of botulism.” Before its passage, Reagan opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination in public accommodations. This act was a cornerstone of the civil rights legislation that eliminated Jim Crow in the 1960’s.

I’m looking at updates on the New Mexico shooting….

Neighbors and others identified the couple as Greg Griego, a gang member turned pastor, who served at Calvary Chapel, as well as at the Metropolitan Detention Center, and Sarah Griego, a stay-at-home mom who home schooled the children.

…neighbor Peter Gomez said he saw the boy walk with siblings and his parents through the neighborhood regularly, and he “wore nothing but camouflage stuff.”

Griego reportedly served in Desert Storm, and Nehemiah told neighbors he wanted to be a soldier. He always wore army clothing and camouflage, but he wasn’t allowed to play violent video games, according to one neighbor, since the boy’s parents didn’t allow anything “dirty or violent” and limited TV watching.

Conservative Christian family, with the father a war vet and the brother of a Republican former senator. The kid was home-schooled by mom. Not allowed to watch TV or play video games.

I’m betting the NRA isn’t going to say much about this shooting at all. Literally none of their usual objects of blame apply here.

Long Creepy manifesto (called “A Time To Kill”)by a Right-wing ex-military nut raving about going to war with and killing the “traitors” who voted for Obama, government workers, journalists, and trade union members. The discouraging part is the 500+ comments he got approving of his lunacy before they closed comments to the article.

…Daily, I see the Blackhawk and Apache helicopters flying over my city, the military vehicles which appear so frequently now on our roads, often with ‘guns up’ in violation of Posse Comitatus, and I know why they prepare, that it is not far off…

I do not care why you took that job with the government, or why you continue to hold it. I only know that you have become Judas and sold yourself to an oppressive state - your government office buildings and vehicles are part of the battlefield, and as a soldier I shall act accordingly.

I do not care why, as a journalist, you choose to spin and corrupt the news, rather than report the plain truth and let the people judge for themselves. I only know that you have violated the public trust in the most vile and seditious manner, and thus your homes, offices, studios, vehicles, and any other place you may find yourself are part of the battlefield, and as a soldier I shall act accordingly.

I do not care why you signed that union card. I only know that you pay dues to a communist organization which conducts treasonous works against my Republic daily – and so your union hall and your work-sites are part of the battlefield, and as a soldier I shall act accordingly.

I do not care that you only voted for the traitor because you are elderly/disabled or otherwise dependent upon government largess. Are you so ignorant and/or disinterested that you could not see through their propaganda, to the fact that your sustenance was assured either way? What have you gained now that the public housing areas you live in, and the public facilities you depend on are part of the battlefield?

…I stand here, ready, on the eve of battle, and I ask God why I have been brough to the threshold of this battlefield, about to be thrust in, when I though my soldiering days were through; and I am reminded that there is by His decree, a Time to Kill, as well as a Time to Die… who am I to question why?
LT

More of these clowns coming out of the woodwork everyday, convinced that the American government and everyone who supports it is their enemy. Curious that these guys never fail to profess how necessary their proposed sedition and terrorism is because of how much they love their country. But they then turn around and advocate what amounts to the total destruction of America as a nation because…

This one seems pretty typical of the species, lots of talk about war, a strident call for killing and destruction. But not one word, much less any ideas, for what happens afterwards, in a country with no legitimate government and most likely subject to a never ending civil war fought mostly with acts of domestic terrorism.

Fortunately for those of us who are still interested in trying to hold this country together, the vast majority of these people have so far only been one of these…

Ew. If you come back in six months to a year and read the investigators reports, I bet you’ll find some really nasty things trying to crawl back under the rocks; out of the sunlight. This reminds me of a suicide in my neighborhood when I was a teen. He turned that shotgun on himself but if even a tenth of what was suspected about that family was true? My eventual FiL would not allow his daughter in their house. He knew there was something wrong but was never able to get to the point where he had enough to call the police. That, I fear, is far more the reality than the “oh, he was such a perfect person” shit you hear all the time.

Several others in that too large & poor Roman Catholic family committed suicide later in life. The rest, simply ran as far and as hard as they could as soon as they hit legal age.

Some loon will create another disaster like Oklahoma city and suddenly everyone will be horrified by the reality. The perpetrator wont be hailed as a hero or a patriot but derided as a lunatic instead. Some of the Right-wing pundits will tone down the rhetoric a notch for a little while and comments and articles suggesting violence wont get quite so enthusiastic a welcome, again only for a while.

Sadly it seems to take reality slapping these folks in the face before they realize just what it is that they are really advocating. Stupid really, they love to talk, but then when something actually happens they (mostly) act just as horrified as everyone else. Idiots. :(

I will be very surprised if we make it through this year without some major act of domestic terrorism. Some Tru Believer™ always thinks that he will be the one whose act will be the “wake up call” that gets the rest of the “movement” to take to the streets. I hope it doesn’t happen, but with the numbers of violence advocating posts we are seeing and the amount of approval they are getting I’m not liking the odds.

The real dangers aren’t terrorism

Look at Romney’s “plan” to the extent he had one. It was to raise spending (military, that medicare thing) and lower revenue.

Then as the government is crashing into insolvency, they were going to try to pull bait and switch on medicare and social security by privatizing them while ending all funding.

… the results of that would be a lot more dead than any terrorism, it would be the slow death of the future elderly in the poor half of the country.

How close did we come to that? … We could still be on the way there, and that is the result of the same ideology if it doesn’t implode the way you say.

And I don’t think implosion of the ultra radicals is important, they’re too easy to disinherit.

The question that matters is, will we stop the cancer from the almost radicals or at least contain it.

I think we’re heading toward “sorta containing it most of the time”

Note a change I just made it wording:

“… the results of that would be a lot more dead than any terrorism, it would be the slow death of the future elderly in the poor half of the country.”

Added the word “future” because the Republicans are smart enough not to kill off the current elderly, given a choice they’ll just sunset Social Security and medicare so that it’s just the not-elderly-yet who will die.

But they will kill poor children now. Medicaid..

And the poor adults now. ACA

re: #214 watching you tiny alien kittens are

Some Tru BelieverTM always thinks that he will be the one whose act will be the “wake up call” that gets the rest of the “movement” to take to the streets. I hope it doesn’t happen, but with the numbers of violence advocating posts we are seeing and the amount of approval they are getting I’m not liking the odds.

This is what’s starting to worry me as well. We’ve got a major political party that while not overtly encouraging this mindset, does nothing to defuse it. Throw in a “news” network that creates a bubble that reinforces said mindset.

At some point, the United States’ armed paranoid racist problem is going to hit critical mass.

Ironically, we did more in the wake of the OKC bombing to address future potential for such terrorism than we’re doing to address mass shootings. As James Holmes demonstrated, the FBI is more worried if you buy up a couple tons of ammonia-based fertilizer and diesel fuel at one time than if you buy 6000 rounds of 5.56 NATO in the same span.

Here in Lubbock, the local rwnj crazy train hasn’t just jumped the rails, it has gone over the bank and into the river, and the wreckage is being washed out to sea even as we speak.
As evidence, I present this rant by our very own “Mr. Conservative,” Dr. Donald May. Doc May is a legitimate physician, though apparently not a psychiatrist, and a formerly respectable political candidate and minor office holder.
Obama’s Intentions

On the day of the second inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama, the American people need to take pause for the serious consideration of what the intentions of Obama are for the United States of America and for the foundation of Western Civilization from which we have risen.

Obama’s intentions are purely Marxist, with the intent of full and absolute governmental control over the people. Obama plans for the redistribution of the wealth of the people to those who support Obama.
…….
American people would not consent to the widespread confiscation of property, retirement accounts, homes, vehicles, fishing boats, and guns. The American people are not going to submit to total government control, including the removal of Crosses and Stars of David from our military cemeteries, the closing of churches and synagogues, and the destruction of our nation’s monuments. Might we see the day when tyrants propose the destruction of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Monument because both Presidents were slave owners? How far and fast might tyranny progress?

Really, doc? REALLY? Has someone proposed removing Christian and Jewish symbols from military cemeteries or destroying national monuments? If so, who? If some lefty loon has proposed such a thing, what is their connection to this administration and the likelihood they could influence policy?

So new details are coming out about the mass murder in ABQ, and it seems that the kid had intended to kill even more people, but the alleged killer called a friend who talked him into meeting him at his father’s church rather than planning on going to the nearest Walmart to continue his killing.

The suspect in custody is the couple’s 15-year-old son, Nehemiah Griego, who authorities believe shot and killed his mother, young brother and two young sisters about 1 a.m. Saturday, and then lay in wait for five hours before ambushing his father when he came home.

The Journal also has learned that authorities believe Nehemiah then put several loaded weapons, including the assault rifle, in the family van with the plan to drive to the nearest Walmart, gun down more people and eventually die in a shootout with police.

But Nehemiah called a friend first, who talked him into meeting at Calvary church, where Nehemiah’s father had been a pastor. It was apparently a Calvary church security officer who contacted 911 about the slayings at the Griego home late Saturday.

Nehemiah Griego is now in the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center, charged with two open counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

The friend is a real hero - managing to not only avert a wider crisis, but managed to get law enforcement involved to stop him safely.

So, not only would he kill and injure more people, but he’d traumatize the cops who would have to kill this kid to save still others. As it is, he’s left the community traumatized by his actions.

The guns, apparently owned by the parents, including shotguns and an AR-15 were stored in a closet - not a gun safe.

Law enforcement also believes the kid had mental health issues.

What she did was demolish the radical left that was strangling the UK. Inequality is a small price to pay for functionality.

re: #150 Dark_Falcon

Thatcher.

The left of late 1970’s Britain sounds an awful lot like the U.S. right WRT to spending during G.W. Bush’s presidency and its current obstructionism. Can I take your comments to mean that you’ll be okay with the GOP being “demolished” the way Britain’s left was? Y’know, inequality being “a small price to pay for functionality” and all.

Stalin was talking about killing people. I was saying that economic equality is less important than having a functional economy. That’s hardly Stalinist.

Which is why Stalin did what he did. People forget that first and foremost that Communism is an economic system. Mass murder, in his mind, made it ‘functional’.

Your statement is saying much the same thing. That economy is more important than people. That once a person is no longer useful to the economy they no longer have any use at all.

Guess the nut does fall far from the tree, after all.

I think Ron Paul drew the “pox on both their houses” crowd who in their search for a non-establishment candidate with some popularity failed to dig real hard to see what he really stood for.

I have been trying to get a bead on the current political leanings of a friend of mine who has a personal blog that his political views appears on now and then. My current theory is that he is solidly in the “pox on both their houses” mode much like I was in the 2008-09 period before I decided that the GOP was a much greater threat than the Democrats. His distrust of the established parties is pretty solid right now and while the current excesses of the GOP has him concerned, he does not trust the Democrats one iota either. (He lives in New Jersey - go figure.)

And he sees a bunch of the current issues as being poorly handled in general. We don’t need to be in Afghanistan. We don’t need to be wasting money on pork barrel weapon systems the military does not want. We need to cut spending to get the budget in back in order. Zig-zag across the traditional divisions, but one thing in common is that he has negative views on all of them in terms of how the government is attempting to handle them in general.

This, in a way, might be one of the sources for the deep wells of anger that seem to be simmering in our society.

Every time a Republican says something sane we’ll add “because he’s white after all” or “at least he’s white” to the end of the statement and laugh.

You know, all this Obama=Hitler stuff is so familiar at this point, I’m having a hard time getting outraged over it, so I reminded myself to recall the time in Middle School, when my social studies class was covering WWII, that my school brought in a Holocaust survivor to talk to us. She was this delightful old Jewish grandmother-type with a thick Polish accent, and what still strikes me today was how matter-of-fact she was in discussing what happened to her: how she was told to lie about her age when she got to Auschwitz, so she didn’t immediately get sent to the showers, and how, when she asked where her mother had gone, the SS guard pointed to the cloud of smoke, “she’s up there”.

It’s in my mind as all the “godwin” tweets get posted. And when I think about an allegedly serious person like John Mackey compares ACA to the above.

Trivializing the Holocaust as a defense mechanism IN ORDER TO SURVIVE is one thing, trivializing the Holocaust in order to CO-OPT THE VICTIMOLOGY is just despicable.

Common courtesy, the sort that must stem from some sort of respect for one’s opponents, has taken a major nosedive since the rise of the Internet, death of Buckley and the rise of modern conservatism and the rise of ‘conservative media’.

Edit for accuracy. Modern Conservatism has existed since the 1960’s, and its rise to power in the 1980’s did not spark a massive civility loss. What sparked that loss on the right was the passing of one of conservatism’s chief gatekeepers and the rise of a ‘conservative media echo chamber’, a phrase now used without derision from The Nation to National Review.

Brits getting involved

Algeria siege: British hostage ‘was executed’

The prime minister told MPs the UK would “work closely with the Algerian government to learn the lessons of this attack and to deepen our security co-operation”.

“And we will contribute British intelligence and counter-terrorism assets to an international effort to find and dismantle the network that planned and ordered the brutal assault,” he said.

“We must work right across the region.”

Canadians have some work to do closer to home

Algerian PM: Two Canadians among hostage-takers

Ottawa said before the prime minister’s statement that it was continuing to probe reports Canadians were among the hostage-takers in the bloody four-day siege that left at least 81 dead.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was “pursuing all appropriate channels to seek further information” and remained in close contact with Algerian authorities.

Private television Ennahar earlier cited security sources as saying two Canadians were among the hostage-takers and Agence France-Presse said a security source told it that it was known two Canadians were among them.

That followed reports Friday from a news agency in Mauritania, which quoted an unnamed source with the militant group who said the hostage-takers included people from Mali, Egypt, Niger, Mauritania and Canada.

re: #397 Gus

I don’t think he’s being a dick about it. There are limitations to what we can do with vague intel. The drone strikes in Pakistan just don’t happen by accident; we have infiltrated the local networks, closely monitor communications and movements. That’s how a lot of terrorist activity is prevented.
Just like the few strands of intel before 9-11. We often have a hint that something’s going on but not enough to stop it.

I said no such thing. ‘Inequality’ ≠ ‘no long have any use at all’.

Well, having been on the receiving end of a legislator who tried to make the economy of my province ‘functional’ I can state that is the effective meaning of ‘functional’. Thanks to him I got to be homeless and came that close to dying.

Any society where economy overrules ethics, as it did in Stalin’s Russia or Thatcher’s Britain, is one where fewer and fewer people reap the benefits of the economy, and one where survival becomes an iffy thing.

Anything substantive the head of the House Intelligence Committee says will be misused by conspiracists. That’s not on him, he’s trying to explain what went wrong. But a major terror attack like the one in Algeria will be fitted into conspiracy theories, regardless of what anyone in power says.

Doesn’t work. Lucas couldn’t have written the dialog for Obama, and would have hard a hard time getting Bush’s malapropisms right as well.

It was easy to get Bush’s malapropisms correct.

Ask the question, “Does the statement have anything to do with empathy for those middle class or lower?”

If the answer is “No” then he got it right every time. “We will not sit idle while danger looms!”

If the answer is “Yes” he probably screwed it up. “I know how hard it is to put food on your family.”

Kinda scary actually.

421 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Jan 21, 2013 10:00:40am

The other fun thing is that the conspiracy nuts ignore the fact that the House Intelligence Committee is involved in getting to the bottom of a real conspiracy regarding the Algeria attack: The conspiracy was by Al Qaeda aligned terrorists who plotted in secret to kidnap and murder to advance the cause of Radical Islam. That is the Real Conspiracy: Our Islamist enemies plan to murder or enslave us all, and we must find them and kill them before they can launch attacks to further their sick dream.

Some new details I haven’t seen before
INSIGHT-Mystery Canadian coordinated Algeria gas field attack, premier says

The jihadists were said to come from Egypt, Mauritania, Niger, Tunisia, Mali, Algeria and, in one case, from Canada. The Canadian, identified initially as Chedad, was coordinating the raiders, Sellal said.

The In Amenas gas plant probably felt impregnable to those who worked there - fenced in, hundreds of miles from anywhere and with the Algerian army patrolling its desert approaches.

That was a mirage. Libya, an ex-police state turned arms bazaar and now open for jihad, lies just 50 miles away.

At least some of the Islamist guerrillas who stormed in before dawn on Wednesday had driven along smugglers’ tracks across the Libyan border, an Algerian security official told Reuters, citing evidence from mobile phones traced to the militants.

NINE TOYOTAS

The militants arrived in nine Toyotas with Libyan plates and painted in the colours of Sonatrach, the Algerian oil and gas company that has a share in the plant, according to the Algerian daily El Khabar.

The ease with which they entered the fortified housing compound and nearby natural gas plant left Algerians in little doubt the gunmen had allies among people at the site.

“They had local cooperation, I’m sure, maybe from drivers or security guards, who helped the terrorists get into the base,” was the immediate reaction of Anis Rahmani, editor of Algeria’s Ennahar newspaper and a writer on security issues who said he was briefed by officials.

Sellal confirmed that a driver who had formerly worked at the plant had been supplying information to the raiders.

Depends on the profit margin between the two; factored by the cost of switching the production from one to the other. If the switch-over costs as much as the profit margin times 20-30 years you probably will not see it happen. That’s an oversimplification, but is roughly the sort of calculation that will be made.

And if you’re a 50-year-old CEO who will be out the door in 15 years max, why start on a bunch of costs now that will only start benefiting the corporation after you are gone and now longer getting anything out of it yourself?

Then she’s a DINO and not the fault of the Texas Dems more generally.

She managed to win a split primary only to have the Texas Democratic Party tell the press that they wouldn’t give her money or support. They also passed a resolution saying they wouldn’t require their members to support her campaign, they wouldn’t acknowledge her at party meetings and wouldn’t include her on any official list of candidates.

The state party has been consistent across the board in rejecting her.

God Loves Uganda Shows How American Christians Export Homophobia

God Loves Uganda, which premiered on Friday at Sundance, is more disturbing: It documents the efforts of evangelicals to export America’s culture war to Africa. Missionaries, of course, have been going to Africa for centuries now. What’s different is an effort not just to bring Jesus to Africa, but the entire political agenda of the American conservative movement. They’re not just bringing the message that “Jesus saves,” but a raft of positions about which Christians may disagree: abstinence over birth control, adoption over abortion, and, most disturbingly, the complete eradication of any trace of homosexuality from society.
