Michael Tomasky: GOP Attracting Minorities? Really?

Terrified of losing their skin privilege

A great piece at The Daily Beast by Michael Tomasky (with thanks for the shout-out to LGF): GOP Attracting Minorities?

Let’s start with African-Americans. Republicans, whatever they might say publicly, won’t actually try to win more black votes. Why? Because the positions the party would have to embrace to win black votes are abhorrent to the GOP base. Which, you may have noticed, is kind of racist. Now, people like me—pundits of the respectable class—aren’t supposed to talk that way. We’re supposed to cooperate in the fiction that the Republican Party is the party of Lincoln and underneath it all yearns to reawaken the great Jack Kemp tradition.

All that is a bunch of rot, I’m afraid, and the rank and file’s racism is just a plain fact. Ever read some of those Fox News website comment threads on race stories, like this rather fascinating thread when Whitney Houston died, or certain Obama articles? It’s like reading Bull Connor’s diary. No, this doesn’t mean every conservative is a racist. But it does mean that if you find yourself at a table with five conservatives and try to break the ice with a watermelon joke, you’re very likely to get somewhere between two and three laughs.

A party with that kind of base is not going to be changing positions on affirmative action anytime in the next, oh, millennium. No—I really can’t predict a meeting of the minds here in any remotely foreseeable future. Remember, the conservative, Republican-appointed Supreme Court is (presumably) about to undo affirmative action and the Voting Rights Act. It’ll be another decade fighting to win those back at least.

The GOP has plenty of minorities … in their minds.

When the GOP rolls out “their” people of color they almost always are, though, very conservative fundamentalist Christians.

Oh, come on Charles. Stop being a Debbie Downer. Don’t you know that the GOP is filled with a bunch of persecuted minorities?

And right on schedule, today PaleoPat, famed Republican and Nixon aide, publishes a column “The Old Republic and Obama’s America—As Obama’s America Rises, The Old Republic Falls”

[…]

What Obama was attempting at the Capitol, with his repeated lifts from Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, was to portray his own and his party’s egalitarianism as a continuation of the great cause that triumphed at Yorktown and Appomattox.

He is hijacking the American Revolution, claiming an ancestral lineage for his ideology that is utterly fraudulent and bogus.

[…]

The freedom of all Americans to compete academically, athletically, artistically and economically must inevitably result in an inequality of incomes, wealth and rewards.

Why? Because all men and women are by nature and nurture unequal. Some are talented, ambitious, industrious, lucky. And in a free society, such men and women will always reap a disproportionate share of fame and fortune.

The only way to equalize rewards is to take from those who have earned and give to those who have not. And that requires the kind of redistributionst regime the Founding Fathers would have risen up against.

As Obama’s America rises, the old republic falls.

The GOP will start attracting minorities about the same time someone will make me believe that an old dude built a boat and shoved it full of every species on earth and rode out a global flood.

In other words, never.

The apple of may a GOP strategists’ eye is trying to sell the pretense that the message is fine, it’s just being framed to the wrong audience:

Jindal: GOP should change ‘just about everything’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling on the Republican Party to “recalibrate the compass of conservatism” as party leaders on Thursday promised fundamental changes to help stave off future losses.

The governor will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting Thursday night in Charlotte, becoming the latest high-profile conservative from outside Washington to call for sweeping changes inside the GOP. In speech excerpts released earlier in the day, Jindal says the GOP doesn’t need to change its values but “might need to change just about everything else we do.”

“We do not need to change what we believe as conservatives — our principles are timeless,” Jindal says. “But we do need to re-orient our focus to the place where conservatism thrives: in the real world beyond the Washington Beltway.”

Hours before the speech, Republican leaders promised to release in March a report, dubbed the “Growth and Opportunity Project,” outlining recommendations on party rules and messaging designed to appeal to a rapidly changing American electorate. President Barack Obama’s November victory was fueled, in part, by overwhelming support from the nation’s Hispanic, Asian and African-American communities.

Speaking of Fischer:

Tomasky: “It is going to be a deeply painful and contentious process for the GOP. I’d say it will be amusing for the rest of us, but it will inject enough poison into the body politic to make it not much fun for anyone.”

Bryan Fischer, you ignorant lying sack of pus-filled maggot-infested crap.

Please provide one single example of a person being lynched in the US for being a Christian with the full and complete knowledge and cooperation of local authorities, before daring to compare your fictional oppression of Christians to the struggle for black civil rights.

At least some wingnuts are engaging me on TGDN, even if it’s snark and insults they know they have been called out on their fake quotes and fake maps. What difference does it make? (their new meme) It’s starting to make a difference.

Of course one doesn’t have to go back to a Whitney Houston story to find the “conservative” online presence over run with ugly racism.

Again over at Townhall, Larry Elder (a self- described “libertarian” who seems to have found out how to make a living being a contrarian who plays in the fundamentalists’ sand boxes) latest piece Black Families Hurt by Magazine’s War on Conservatives is full of comments that range from just stupid to out right ugly.

The GOP has made its bed with an industry that serves ugliness. That’s the long and short of it.

OT, but a comment on the Ted Nugent draft-dodging article via LGF page:

Nugent is a parasitical leach on the scrotum of America making money off the ignorance and gullibility of the hard right who will embrace anything or anyone who shouts the insane rhetoric of hate and bigotry. As a soldier I find his supposed support for the troops reprehensible.

Nail, meet hammer.

“cynical, selective interest in fiscal responsibility”

Why the GOP Could Be in the Wilderness For a Long Time

“…The weaknesses don’t stop there. The GOP wants to be perceived as the party of limited, constitutional government, but it just went through the better part of a decade expanding the size and intrusiveness of government, and it supported practices of illegal detention and illegal surveillance to boot. With depressingly few exceptions, the party hasn’t repudiated any of the latter, and there appears to be no urgency in reversing or undoing any of the damage done by these things. Having trashed almost everything that their party was supposed to represent, many Republican leaders act as if the worst thing that ever happened during the Bush years was a profusion of earmarks. Until they stop kidding or lying to themselves about what happened the last time there was unified Republican government, it’s doubtful that the public will be willing to entrust them with that much power.”

In which Daniel Larison manages to run through a litany of GOP weaknesses without once mentioning the racist elephant in the room.

That makes sense, from a certain point of view. The Southern strategy was a matter of opportunism rather than principle, IMO. There were just too many racist votes that could be picked on the cheap with a bit of dog whistling.

The racists were supposed to be useful idiots that would vote against their economic interest because of racist resentment against LBJ and the Democrats.

The racists were not supposed to converge with other nitwits into a collection of nuts (i.e. the present-day GOP base) that threatens to gain total control of the party while being seen as insane by everyone except themselves.

I will note that politics can make for strange bedfellows, and some unforeseen event could upend the current American political party coalitions.

Like the party of the birthers is going to listen to an anchor baby. Why not try for a toofer and get Mario Rubio on board too so the base can let them both know where they can stick their criticism.
