Creationism Advocate Bobby Jindal Warns GOP Against Becoming ‘the Stupid Party’

At a Republican National Committee winter summit yesterday, Louisiana’s Gov. Bobby Jindal scolded his fellow Republicans for acting like “the stupid party,” which he said damaged their credibility in the last election:

In his remarks to the gathering, he also offered some tough medicine for the GOP, including this piece of advice: “We must stop being the stupid party. It’s time for a new Republican party that talks like adults. It’s time for us to articulate our plans and visions for America in real terms. We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. We’ve had enough of that.” Whether or not Jindal ultimately emerges as a top presidential contender, look for him to be a major presence, not just in Louisiana, but around the country as well as a key figure in helping the party chart its course forward.

Of course, this is the same Bobby Jindal who is literally dumbing down Louisiana’s education system by advocating the teaching of creationism in taxpayer-funded schools.

Gingrich: Calling an AR-15 an assault weapon is ‘lovely propaganda’

“I put it to you that an AR-15 military-style assault weapon was used in the last five mass shootings,” Morgan pointed out.

“It’s not a military-style assault weapon,” Gingrich insisted. “Look, this is a lovely propaganda.”

“What else do you call then?” Morgan pressed. “A machine that can fire 100 bullets in a minute. What else do you call it?”

“I would simply say to you that millions of people, by your own definition, own an AR-15,” the Georgia Republican explained. “They’re law-abiding. They think it is their right under our Constitution to own it, and don’t kid the rest of us.”

I call that evading the question.

I’d like them to explain why the 1950’s a period where unions were at their most powerful in this country had such a low unemployment rate. That’s insane though. Lowest numbers in 97 years and people still want to whine about unions? Christ, I wouldn’t be surprised to see union membership dip below 10 percent eventually.

Well let’s hope they get stupidly confident in 2016 then. But that’s worrying. This whole dipshit movement to change the system because Republicans are butt hurt that their presidential candidates keep on losing key states is worrying. Maybe they should do better than John McCain and Mitt Romney instead of fucking with a system that has worked for over 200 years.

They buy the bullshit that a union organizer advocating for better pay and benefits is a terrible person while the executive that gives himself a six plus figure bonus is a job creator. It’s madness. I don’t expect everyone to embrace unions and unionization but by god, do not bitch to me about union thuggery when corporate thuggery has been around a lot longer and still exists and has always existed to a greater degree. Lest we forget Homestead. That one image of the fat cat and dude with the sleeve shirt applies here.

What’s frustrating about this vote crap is there from what I see is nothing illegal about it. Maine and Nebraska currently do it but the thing is those are smaller states. It’s been pointed out and I will point it out again that Romney would have actually gotten more EVs in states that he lost overwhelmingly to Obama. I’d hope even though it’s drastic that the Dem state senates of these states filibuster these with all their might and wage a media war on the Republicans. This is undemocratic. And it’s scary to think that they didn’t proceed with this in Michigan only because the bill’s sponsor got cocky and arrogant and thought Mitt was going to win.

Mississippi GOPers Pushing Bill To ‘Assert The Sovereignty Of The State’

A pair of Republican lawmakers in Mississippi have proposed a bill to keep the federal government in its place, and laying out a plan to create a Joint Legislative Committee on the Neutralization of Federal Law, which would — well maybe you can already start to guess what the committee would do.

The bill, known as the Mississippi Balance of Powers Act, was authored by state Rep. Gary Chism (R), chairman of the House Insurance Committee, and Rep. Jeff Smith (R), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Earlier this week, the bill was referred to the House Constitution Committee.

“The provisions of this act shall serve as a notice and demand to the federal government to cease and desist any and all activities outside the scope of its designated constitutionally enumerated powers, and that attempt to diminish the balance of powers as established,” the bill reads.

re: #20 Kragar

Mississippi GOPers Pushing Bill To ‘Assert The Sovereignty Of The State’

*sigh*

The committee will be allowed to review “any and all existing federal statutes, mandates and executive orders for the purpose of determining their constitutionality.” Any measure that is found to be “beyond the scope and power assigned to the federal government under Article 1 of the United States Constitution or in direct violation of the Mississippi Constitution of 1890” may be recommended for neutralization by the simple majority vote of each house of the Mississippi State Legislature.

“If the Mississippi State Legislature votes by simple majority to neutralize any federal statute, mandate or executive order on the grounds of its lack of proper constitutionality, then the state and its citizens shall not recognize or be obligated to live under the statute, mandate or executive order,” the bill reads.

Chism told The Clarion-Ledger newspaper the bill was intended to enforce the 10th Amendment.

The Supremacy Clause, how the hell does it work?

Fun to say, but even in the most ass-backwards state a solid 30% of the populace isn’t a freakish blend of insane racist head-up-ass lunacy.

So no. Mississippi stays, warts and all.

Here’s a glimpse into the future of what is likely to happen with businesses who will be adding “Obamacare” surcharges…

Over 50 San Francisco Restaurants accused of scamming employees by pocketing health care money

For more than four years, dozens of restaurants in San Francisco have been tacking on surcharges to diners’ bills, claiming that the money was to go toward health care costs. But it turns out that millions of those dollars were just going into restaurant owners’ pockets.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that starting in 2008, some owners decided that, rather than raise their menu prices to cover city-mandated health care costs, they would just add a surcharge to customers’ invoices. In some cases the surcharge was a flat amount, in others it was a percentage of the total bill. Regardless, this money was to be used for health care for employees.

But per the city’s Office of Labor Standards Enforcement, that just wasn’t happening. It tells the Chronicle that in 2011 alone, $14 million was collected via these surcharges, yet only around one-third of that ever went to health care.

“It was pocketed back to the restaurateur,” said San Francisco Supervisor David Campos, who says that some restaurant employees were actually denied health care when they shouldn’t have been.

The City Attorney is expected to announce an amnesty program today that would forgive violators if they fess up to the skim and pay back some of that money to employees.

“Requiring these people to pay restitution is a compromise,” Assemblyman Tom Ammiano tells the Chronicle. “If it was up to me, I’d throw them in jail.”

Free markets! Capitalism! Fiscal Responsibility!

But even when Driscoll learned the story was fake, he argued that it felt true: “There’s a reason the Onion can make satire out of this photo, which was obviously doctored to give us a laugh (ceremonial drone flyover, indeed! HA!), is that satire is a stretch of the truth.”

Fake but accurate!

It is worth knowing but dismissing discussion about these weapons as “lovely propaganda” is crap. And I agree we should be talking specifics. The problem is you have some who don’t want to talk at all or some who want to claim as one elected official did that credit cards were as dangerous. I am not supporting the banning of any weapon here and now but I do want us to be more smart about how they’re sold.
