Gun Control Advocates March as Nation Reels From School Shootings

US News • Views: 27,135

Thousands of demonstrators rallied Saturday in Washington to demand tougher gun control laws, many describing themselves as first-time capital marchers who’ve had enough of gun violence.

On a cold day, a vanguard led a blocks-long procession with a big blue banner, declaring “March on Washington for Gun Control: When we stand together, we stand a chance.”

The demonstrators want reinstatement of the federal ban on the sale of military-style semi-automatic rifles such as the one used in the recent Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead, plus the gunman and his mother. The protestors also want a ban on the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines and universal background checks.

Many marchers just carried black-and-white placards bearing the names of victims of gun violence, such as Veronica Soto, a Newtown teacher who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.

Color me a pessimist, but I doubt the House will pass any but the most trivial of gun measures.

If President Obama has any agenda, any idea of how he wants to be remembered (other than “Obama”care), then he ought to make the 2014 elections about one topic: gun sanity.

He has the bully pulpit to do it. However, he has to be careful not to be distracted by the other hot button issues: immigration, health care, war.

Being pessimistic is having negative expectations that are unrealistic.

Therefore, you are not being pessimistic here. In fact, I think nothing at all on gun control will get out of the House.

Frankly, I’d rather see Obama spend his energy on gun sanity than, say, climate change, as the latter issue becomes too international and dies the death of a thousand UN cuts.

This is a double-edged proposal. Traditionally, gun control is an issue the Democrats embrace when they get tired of winning elections and want to lose a few.

I doubt the recent appalling news is sufficient to change the political calculus very much.

That’s why it would be Obama’s legacy. He might be the Democrat who could change the relationship the Democratic Party has with gun control and the rest of the electorate.

The NRA guy is a total doofus, comparing apples and oranges. Where does he get the idea the government is opposed to schools having armed guards anyway? Any school district that so desires can post police officers or hire licensed security contractors to protect schools.
Does he perhaps think the feds should mandate this? What is he? Some sort of big government fanatic who would trample the sovereignty of local school boards? Dirty liberal, eroding our liberty one mandate at a time. Grrrr!

I agree that a victory on this front would be very powerful. I just worry about the chance of effectively pulling it off. “Death or Glory” strategies always make me nervous, and failure (real or perceived) on this front could easily throw the GOP a life preserver when they need to be thrown an anvil.

I would think that saving Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, ACA, the EPA and the Dept of Education from the GOP wolves would be much more important to most people than “gun sanity” or “global warming”

Also I would think that saving the EPA would help on the global warming front.

Obama should go all out for the universal background check, with the mag restriction as a second priority. I talk to a great many gun fanciers, including full-bore (!) NRA kooks. They are overwhelmingly in favor of closing the private sale loophole even though the NRA itself (the LaPierre gang) opposes doing so. It is something we can get and it would make a real difference out on the streets.

16 freetoken  Sat, Jan 26, 2013 3:49:20pm

re: #12 stabby

“Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid” doesn’t have to be Obama’s issues, though. The mechanics of the Democratic Party, and even outside that party, can fight to protect those.

EPA is a noble cause but frankly it has depended upon GOP help as much as Democratic party help in the past.

Education, as a “Department”, isn’t going anywhere, and I wouldn’t want to see Obama fall on his sword for mere budget details.

I agree about the background check. Let the House GOP get in the way of that train and they can be run over.

However, there is no way any kind of AWB gets out of the House, and it would be dangerous to try to make a big deal out of this particular bit of obstruction.

Republicans taking all the wrong lessons away from 2012 drubbing

Friday night on “The Rachel Maddow Show,” host Rachel Maddow discussed how the Republican Party appears to have taken all the wrong lessons from the drubbing it took in 2012. Even as the GOP feverishly tries to scrub away all signs of former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), she said, it is merely digging itself further and further into its extremist hole.

She began the segment with the tale of Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), who unofficially announced his retirement via a statement from Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) on Friday. Chambliss was about to be primaried from the right by members of his own party for daring to work with Democrats on a budget deal earlier this year.

U.S. Rep. Paul “Lies Straight from the Pit of Hell” Broun (R-GA) has been mentioned as a possible contender for Chambliss’ seat, as well as Rep. Phil Gingrey, who recently announced that Reps. Todd Akin (R-MO) and Richard Mourdock (R-IN) were “party right” that women can’t become pregnant in cases of “legitimate rape.” A third candidate would be disgraced Komen Foundation executive Karen Handel, former Georgia Secretary of State, who infamously tried to cut Komen’s connections to Planned Parenthood, only to be rebuffed.

The Georgia race is just one example of how the Republican Party is refusing to accept that its far-right fringe is out of step with the U.S. public. Races all over the country have gone to Democrats because Republicans insisted on running the most rigid, ideologically blinkered candidates they could muster.

Have any of you looked at the list of specifically excepted firearms in Feinstein’s bill? Some models are specifically listed with the notation (w/o folding stock) but most aren’t, even though folding stocks are available for them. For instance the Ruger Mini 14 is exempted without folding stock, but the Mini 30 is exempted without such a notation. So could Ruger just sell Mini 30s with folding stocks since the Mini 30 is exempted from the bill. Same deal with the 10/22, the Carbine is exempted with the no folding stock notation, but the 10/22 Target, Sporter and Compact models are all listed separately without such a notation.

The way I read it if a person were to put a folding stock on a Marlin Camp 9 or Marlin were to reintroduce that model with that name but add a folding stock it would be exempted and fine. However since the bill doesn’t mention BATFE certified Curio and Relics at all, a CMP auctioned M1A1 Carbine would be illegal.

I’m sorry, but this bill reads like an exercise in arbitrary non thoughts.

BTW Feinstein pads the list of exempted models with a bunch of models that are already categorically exempted - pump, lever, bolt and single shot falling block rifles. It’s designed to look like a lot of thought was put into the list, but it’s mostly redundant.

It is a sad reality that the government is still trying to hammer out policy on things that have been floating around without getting closer to a solution in some cases for 20 or more years.

Nobody on either side expects to resolve issues and the public doesn’t expect them to sort them out either.

Gun Sanity should be easy. Several of these issues should be easy. There are enough people working in government that they should be able to work on and solve several issues in fairly short order.

Talk about broken government and leadership. It’s pathetic. The most these people appear to be capable of is rubber stamping spending that’s been in place for decades and even that much is getting to be too much for them to agree on.

But the compact isn’t? As long as it meets minimum length with the stock extended it passes current federal law. California makes you measure with the stock folded, a state court ruling I never quite understood since it’s pretty hard to hit anything if you’re not aiming from the shoulder.

I don’t think Feinstein’s AWB is a good fight for the Democrats to pick (there are flaws in the bill, and it is DOA in the House).

However, there are some tiny signs of progress. When I looked at the bill, it appears that the purely cosmetic feature of a bayonet mount was not one of the defining characteristics of an assault weapon.

Yeah, I see no way this could possibly end badly:

WI sheriff tells residents to get ‘in the game’ and arm themselves

A Wisconsin sheriff has drawn criticism from other public officials for a radio commercial telling residents not to wait for authorities to help them and to arm themselves for protection.

According to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. can be heard in the ad saying, “With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back.”

Clarke also encourages residents to sign up for firearms training courses, saying, “I need you in the game,” and, “We’re partners now. Can I count on you?”

Instagram Asking For Your Government Issued Photo IDs Now, Too

the requests are official and are being done by Instagram and Facebook in response to suspected violations of the two social networks’ distinct terms of service.

“This is just a general practice for both Facebook and Instagram to request photo IDs for verification purposes depending on what type of violation may have occurred,” a spokesperson for Facebook told TPM. “Unfortunately, I can’t share more with you beyond that as we don’t go into details beyond that.”

Facebook declined to state exactly why a number of users would collectively receive notifications to provide government issued IDs this week or what specific violations of terms prompted the notifications.

Back in February 2012, well prior to its acquisition of Instagram in April that year, Facebook confirmed that it had begun asking some users to provide government issued photo IDs, but at that time, a Facebook PR rep told TPM that the company was only “testing this process right now with people who have a large number of subscribers,” and would “iterate based on the feedback we receive.”

Counter productively, the talk of AWBs, the NY law and Feinsteins bill have all had the effect of mainlining adrenaline into the firearms market. Some of the smaller shops are gouging like crazy just because they can, the guy in Fillmore is charging 4 to 5 times MSRP for the couple of ARs he has in stock. Closer to Simi I’ve seen 20% over MSRP for guns that are in zero danger of being banned. My local usually large inventory store Greta’s is virtually cleaned out of Glocks (only has one left), S&W, Ruger and H&K handguns. Only thing left are Sigs just because they cost so much new, but they’ll be gone soon too. Every retailer is working off a huge pile of backorders.

A lot of these guns are being snapped up by panicked newbies, people with zero experience who just want to get what they can now because they think there’s a ban coming soon, even though there probably isn’t, at least for a few more years.

If Feinstein and the Congressional Democrats were actually interested in lowering the number of firearms in circulation they’d shut the hell up about their plans until they had enough votes to guarantee that legislation passes. Instead it’s all politics now, about being seen, heard, and constructing the most ridiculous bills possible vs. actually thinking about how their behavior feeds back into and exacerbates the problem.
