In Newtown, Gun Nuts Heckle Father of Murdered Child

In a hearing at the Connecticut state capitol yesterday, pro-gun demonstrators actually heckled the father of a 6-year old boy killed in the Newtown school massacre.

There are no words.

The sometimes boisterous public hearing — after nearly four hours of testimony from State Police, parents of slain Newtown first-graders and city mayors — seemed dominated by gun owners, who railed at more than 90 proposed bills.

“The Second Amendment!” was shouted a couple of times by as many as a dozen gun enthusiasts in the meeting room as Neil Heslin, holding a photo of his slain 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, asked why Bushmaster assault-style weapons are allowed to be sold in the state.

“There are a lot of things that should be changed to prevent what happened,” said Heslin, who said he grew up using guns and was undisturbed by the interruption of his testimony.

“That wasn’t just a killing, it was a massacre,” said Heslin, who recalled dropping off his son at Sandy Hook Elementary school shortly before Lanza opened fire. “I just hope some good can come out of this.”

The 9/11 truthers were seen by most everyone as marginalized whack jobs. The Newton Truthers have an agenda and national organizations giving them tacit support.

But I see these recent gun tragedies as a powerful emetic, bringing up the wretched bile that has been sloshing about in America’s stomach. Now the GOP has to distance itself from this sort of rhetoric or plant its policies in the midst of a fetid puddle of green puke.

Then again, paranoia runs deep in American politics. Fear of government action was a driving force in the nation’s creation, the establishment of the Bill of Rights, and it’s a driving factor in the opposition to even the most benign and sensible firearms regulations (like universal background checks).

Then again, paranoia runs deep in American politics. Fear of government action was a driving force in the nation’s creation, the establishment of the Bill of Rights, and it’s a driving factor in the opposition to even the most benign and sensible firearms regulations (like universal background checks).

I understand that people back then were wary of government, Democracy eas a new and untetsed concept. But as far as I know, our government was freely and fairly elected.

The only way to paint our government as tyrannical or as usurpers is to subscribe to birther conspiracy theories and all the other ridiculous postulates of the wingnut worldview.

Some warned that gun ownership is a check on governmental tyranny and charged that Obama has an agenda to disarm them and take away rights guaranteed under the state Constitution and the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

These delusional freaks are hell-bent on forcing a violent showdown, with amoral profiteers like Limbaugh and Jones focusing and inciting their rage at every opportunity. In my darker moments I think it might be best if it did happen. The pathology these people represent would be exposed for what it is, their illusions destroyed, and their dire influence over such things as public education consigned to the dustbin of history. There would be many, many innocent victims, though, and heavy costs in other ways. It would probably cost us our position of world leadership, for example. I do not therefore advocate such a thing, but I think it becomes more likely with each passing day.

The ‘armed citizenry’ shtick cuts both ways. I want these idiots to be worried about their liberal citizens down the street and across the tracks. Alabama went for Obama around 35%. That’s more than the black population for an anti-confederate 5th column.

And that’s what worries me most. This sedition talk is becoming more and more comfortable for them, and in their little echo chambers an extreme act will begin to seem more and more acceptable.

The crazy has really ramped up since the election. The unthinkable is now the subject of open discussion. Someone’s going to take it completely the wrong way and try something they shouldn’t.

Police say he was cooperative and did nothing illegal. Officers did find a note in his pocket spelling out his intent to express his 2nd Amendment rights. Police say they could not release man’s name because he was not arrested.

National Rifle Association (NRA) instructor Bill Davis says the gun incident was inappropriate and could have turned violent.

“I think it reflects on all gun owners in a bad way,” Davis said. “I’ve talked to six NRA instructors this morning about it. Why did he have that note in his pocket? I think - this is my personal opinion - I think he expected to be shot, so they would have found the note and said he wasn’t doing nothing.”

I call it a dry run to see what it felt like to walk into a soft target loaded to kill. The guy’s got no criminal record, but he’s not well.

That’s the plan. And then when the next tragedy prompts a new round of discussion and subsequent government action, they’ll turn it around and say “look, the government is trying to take away freedoms again!” Rinse, repeat. The NRA and the weapons market see a huge boon in donations and income, a bunch of folks are dead, we get a bunch of useless regulations enacted that won’t do anything to actually limit gun violence.

The Supreme Court has upheld firearms regulations, and even Heller indicated that reasonable regulations can be enacted by Congress and the states. (That was Scalia writing the opinion too - so it’s not as though it’s some liberal gun confiscator).

At this point I think yelling “2nd amendment” is pretty much in the realm of going Godwin in this issue. The longer an argument about guns goes on, the greater chance somebody will mention the 2nd amendment, and it can then be assumed that person has lost said argument.

None of the proposed changes would result in gun confiscation other than the problematic provision relating to the mentally ill who possess firearms and who pose a danger to others. No one is going to be taking the guns away, least of all handguns - handguns that are the weapon of choice in over half of all homicides and suicides.

Background checks wont deprive someone of firearms they already have, but could prevent someone who shouldn’t have them from getting them - like felons and could reduce straw/sham sales that allow firearms to get into the hands of those who shouldn’t have them (minors, felons, etc.)

They would simply meet somewhere else with these weapons in hand, grab more from the local Big Box if necessary (paying with a state check of course), and move forward from there. Even a lightly armed force has many, many advantages when it is properly trained and led and its members are used to working together. I’ve also heard of nuts who think they could hold off federal reinforcements simply by closing the local airport, an easy enough task for an armed mob. In reality, this would probably delay reinforcement for a couple of hours at most, until a helicopter lift and road convoys could be organized.

Mr Heslin twice asked why should people be allowed to have these weapons. Severe storms are expected across the Central US and into the Southeast. Tornado outbreak possible, and damaging straight line winds likely as a front moves through ushering in colder air.

Areas affected: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, northern Louisiana, southeastern Missouri, western Mississippi and southwestern Tennessee.

As these storms are likely to produce significant damage, sufficient enough to warrant disaster declarations, I can’t wait for their Congressional representatives in the House and Senate to get up and demand disaster aid right after they just got through voting against it for Sandy victims. Watch as they go into full pretzel logic mode about how they shouldn’t be constrained by offsetting cuts for their disaster aid, while demanding the same with Sandy aid and voting against because it didn’t have that provision. The hypocrisy and irony will be palpable.

And yes, I’m looking at the likes of John Cornyn and James Inhofe in particular.

Kenmore is made by any of several manufacturers, incl GE and Whirlpool. Sears has them rebranded. Used to make them night shift while going to UofL.

My dishwasher broke this morning. It’s the second time in 5 months and it’s only a couple years old. My old one lasted 15 years before it died.

Try calling the home office and writing letters to the CEO. We had some success with that when our Whirlpool washer conked out 3 times after it went out of warranty.

My letters stated in part that I felt it was unacceptable to spend that much money on an appliance that apparently had such a tiny window for use. Be polite but direct. Try posting something to Twitter with the appropriate hashtags. That seems to get people’s attention.

We still had to pay for some repairs, but the overall cost was reduced by interacting with Whirlpool. The build quality and lifespan of today’s appliances is frustrating beyond belief.

I have a Kenmore washing machine too. It is awesome. No agitator in the middle and it figures out how much water to use. Amazing technology. I hope it lasts longer than my dishwasher.

Maytag doesn’t exist.

They were bought by whirlpool and all their products are now whirpools in a redesigned box with more rounded corners to look more maytagish.

Kenmore makes nothing. For laundry, 99% of Kenmores are whirlpool or Frigidaire. And my experiences with GE are not good at all. Half of GE laundry equipment is made by Frigidaire, with a large extra markup on parts, the other half is GE only. I’ve seen GE coin-op dryers that look identical on the outside, but one has Frigidaire parts on the inside and the other GE parts. And I don’t know LG well, but they are highly rated. Better to look for Amazon ratings on popular machines than to trust anything else.

No self respecting gun owner would heckle the father of a shooting victim, especially a child for Gods sake!

Those people do no represent the majority of gun owners, I should know, I am one and there is no f-ing way those people should be there going after the father of a victim of the New Town shooting! I’m sadly ashamed and sincerely pissed off enough to say these people aren’t thinking clearly, all they see is “GUN BAN”.

They don’t see the big picture, which is, only people who want to harm large numbers of people want those types of firearms. And if they have children in their home they blasted well shouldn’t own them! My God, the thought of a pissed off and hormonal teenager getting hold of one and using it makes my hair stand on end! If I had a child my firearms would be sold in a heart beat!

I, as a responsible hand gun owner, fail to under stand why any Joe Schmoe off the street should need to own a firearm that can shoot off over 100 rounds in 20 seconds! Those types of firearms belong in the hands of the military, not under a law abiding citizens bed where anyone can get to them!

If you cant defend your home with a ten round magazine then you shouldn’t own a gun! There’s no need to spray bullets around endangering your neighbors if a burglar is in your home, and the ammo those firearms use will pierce brick walls as well as any host of things and just keep going! I have frangible ammo in my home firearm which will break apart upon impact with any solid object, including glass thus no innocent bystander would be in the danger of being injured or killed!

We have a rule in our home, if there’s a burglar in the house, barricade yourself in the back bedroom, hide in the closet, call 911 and let them take anything they want with one exception! That exception being if they try to break into the room I’m in it has become personal eminent danger to me and anyone else with me and if they get in, then and only then shoot!

Those idiot hecklers make the rest of us look really bad and I personally resent them with every fiber of my being!

And, just for the record, I haven’t belonged to the NRA for more than 10 years due to their short sighted and misguided broad sweeping rejection of the control of assault type firearms, not to mention they deserted the gun owners of California when we needed them the most!

I’m not posting this to start a fight, but I just feel that I needed to state my position on this subject.

I am almost at that point of contacting the home office. The repairs are simple. I did the last one myself and this one I can do too. It’s the fact that it is breaking so soon that is pissing me off. I might send them an email later today.

There have already been tornado outbreaks earlier this month centered on Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. Some scattered damage, but no major tornados (EF-3 or higher). But so far this month has witnessed fewer tornadoes than last year and below 3 year average for January.

Today could change all that.

We’re seeing more storms, and more that are further afield from the traditional tornado alleys (Southeast early in the year, moving towards the traditional tornado alley later in the year).

Absolutely do it. You’ll be surprised with the results.

A few things I like to do:

1. Always remember that the person you’re talking to didn’t cause the problem. Treat them well. Don’t curse, but be blunt in the fact that the company should be ashamed of the product failing like that.

2. I try to acknowledge that I’m not trying to scam them. When dealing with Whirlpool, I mentioned that if the washer was 10 years old and being used 80 time a day, they’d have every right to hang up on me. But for a product to fall apart so soon after warranty is a disgrace.

The only problems I am having are electronic. There are only like 3 or 4 parts that need to be replaced and are easily accessible in the front. The rest of it works fine. I wonder who makes the electronics?

I remember someone I knew wanted to replace a small ventless, washes-then-dries machine.

Her original was Ariston (or some rebranded Ariston) - she went on Amazon and looked at the ratings for similar machines. The LG cost twice what an Ariston did, but it was significantly higher rated and she went with it.

What can I say about the Aristons? The controls are confusing, and if you dry towels in them a lot, then you’ll need to find someone who knows how to clean out the fan after a few years because it will fill up with lint.

I saw a fascinating GE Hotpoint washer and dryer the other day.

It was the smallest thing you’ve ever seen.

I think it was made in the 70s

It was made in Japan.

The washer didn’t have an agitator, instead it had something that made a powerful whirlpool action in the water using a powerful motor….
The dryer was unusual because it vented out into the room through a grating.

Mitt Romney said that millions of Americans “don’t care to take responsibility for their own lives.” Part of “responsibility” is “moral responsibility”. Any politician who may have encouraged deranged hatred in the past, and who has a public voice (e.g. Mitt Romney) has a moral responsibility to speak out against hatred and in favor of sanity.

When addressing securing our borders:

Do use the wording “enforcement of our borders includes more border patrol, technology, and building a fence where it makes sense”

Don’t use phrases like “send them all back”, “electric fence”, “build a wall along the entire border”

When talking about immigrants:

Do use “undocumented immigrant” when referring to those here without documentation

Don’t use the word “illegals” or “aliens”

Don’t use the term “anchor baby”

Far more don’ts than dos on that list. It’s going to be a steep learning curve for the GOP.

My Advise? Get to a Doctor, now! I had bronchitis for 3 weeks and ended up with asthma for the rest of my life! It scars the lungs and makes it difficult to do all kinds of things, sharp smells and even laughter sets it off. According to my doctor bronchitis is a secondary bacterial infection that has set in due to the flu lowering your immune system. I always have to go to the doctor for an antibiotic when I get bronchitis, once you’ve had it you’re prone to it. Take care of yourself, okay?

If it is only congestion without a bacterial infection (ie Sinusitis) involved, drinking LOTS of fluids and taking an over-the-counter expectorant (Mucinex, etc) will typically clear you up in a few days. I would advise against taking antihistamines when trying to clear your lungs - it will only prolong the congestion. If you do have a sinus infection, then you’re going to need to get a antibiotic prescription in all likelyhood. Otherwise it might take weeks to clear up, and you run further risk of pneumonia.

Weapons were reportedly found in three cargo sections of the 130-foot boat. The weapons included air-to-surface missiles, C4 military-grade explosives, 122-mm shells, rocket-propelled grenades and bomb making equipment, a statement from the Yemeni government Monday said.

U.S. officials said the weapons were made in Iran and is an attempt by the Islamic Republic to reach out to rebels and other political figures in Yemen, the Times said.

10 years ago I fell and broke my ankle. I thought it was just “sprained,” dragged myself home limping on the BROKEN ANKLE and wrapped it in an ace bandage. I did not have health insurance at the time.

Years later (by the time I finally did get insurance), developed arthritis in both ankles. Orthopedist ordered xrays and noticed the remodeled broken ankle.

CNN Parts Ways With Major Contributors

Pundit power couple James Carville and Mary Matalin will not be continuing their contracts with CNN, according to FishbowlDC sources. In addition, Bill Bennett and Maria Cardona are also parting ways with the network, although CNN Espanol will keep Cardona on board.

So you’re on the same sheet of music, they’re going to point to the Battle of Athens. (August 1, 1946. See here and scroll down to chronology of the battle for full details.) Understand that in some ways it’s a compelling argument.

Simple overview: a political machine had been running McMinn county, TN, for many years. In 1946 a host of veterans were home and had decided to run against the machine. The machine did what the machine does but the veterans objected. The machine had 75-100 or so armed forces (police, temporary and full-time deputies, and a state patrolman), and they tried to force the election (after promising open). The vets who fought numbered around 500. The vets won.

Yeah, look again at the number of participants on each side. Then consider what the current so-called patriots number. Notice which side had combatants with recent combat experience.

But every time you talk whiskey rebellion they’re going to think battle of athens. Just a point to keep in mind.

I turned my ankle a few years back - walked home and toughed it out, but then when I tried to walk a few hours later, I couldn’t put any weight on it - and it was a nondisplaced avulsion fracture. Better that than torn ligaments that would have required surgery to repair.

I’d suggest a trip to the ER to rule out anything more serious. In the meantime, RICE it.

Would love to hear Davis claim that Marsden’s ideas are “too out of touch” from a guy who moved up here because he knows he’s too moderate liberal for the Alabama GOP but just enough for Virginia GOP. And Marsden I can tell you from personal experience is one of the good guys. Really cares about young people and actually likes to listen to us rather than just be a condescending jerk.

See, he thinks it should be easier to get people involuntarily committed for evaluation, that people determined to be mentally ill should be held till they’re stable and controlled, that repeat offenders (people who are fine on drugs but who don’t take their drugs) should be highly restricted even though they’re stable and controlled. And do this, somehow, with no increase of taxes or government services. Somehow private industry will do it just fine.

I’ve been in favor of removing immigration caps for a long time. There are legitimate problems with that position, but it also removes a lot of problems I think are worse.

Notice I said caps. Not restrictions on things like criminal history and such, nothing on the category of deportation of immigrants not yet citizens for various actions. Just remove the cap on how many can enter the country with the intent of immigrating.

I think it’d be tumultuous for about four years, then a new stability would develop. And incidentally the nation would probably be rejuvenated.

that means having a planning session for every two week period where you ‘break down’ all the ‘tasks’ you plan on doing in the next two weeks, write them down on sticky notes, and put hour estimates on all of them

then every day you get to stand up in front of your managers and account for every hour you spend the previous day, and mark the time off on the sticky notes. if the actual tasks get out of synch with your sticky notes, you can explain why you failed to plan properly

but somehow i tend to think that executives would feel that they shouldn’t be required to work this way

I watched both videos of the hearing, and the accusation that the NBC clip was “deceptively edited” is just more idiotic bullshit from the Daily Caller’s head moron, “Jim Treacher.”

The unedited video has a lot of dead air. Long pauses. They edited it to remove the long pauses. End of story.

The chair specifically admonished the gun nuts to stop interrupting Neil Heslin’s testimony. They were completely out of order, and “heckling” is a good word for it. The excuse that they were just “answering his question” is laughable.

The unedited video does not make these cretins who interrupted his testimony look one bit better.

To me, this is just amazingly crappy behavior, and watching the whole video makes it worse, because you can see this poor guy struggling to say what was on his mind, devastated by the loss of his child.

Anyone who thinks the proper answer to his grief-stricken question “Why does anyone need these assault weapons?” is “The Second Amendment!” has a big chunk of their soul missing.

At around the 15-minute mark in the video below you’ll hear an untold number of gun-rights supporters shout out a variety of Second Amendment-related remarks, just as the the Connecticut Post originally reported occurred in a story headlined “Father of Newtown victim heckled at hearing.” But the video also shows that those who interjected were responding to a question posed by Heslin.
“Is there anybody in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question, why anybody in this room needs to have one of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips?” Heslin said before pausing and looking around the room. He then continued: “And not one person can answer that question or give me an answer.” It was at that point that the cries of “Second Amendment” can be heard.

Now it’s worth pointing out that the audience members aren’t supposed to interrupt a witness—a lawmaker running the hearing can be heard asking for the crowd to be quiet—and it’s possible that Heslin’s question was a rhetorical one, and his pause was simply for dramatic effect. But regardless, it’s fairly clear that those gun-rights advocates who spoke up were doing so in response to what they heard as a question. Even if such actions represent an interruption they nonetheless appear to fall well short of heckling, an act that most often comes with an air of harassment associated with it.

If the exchange between Heslin and the pro-gun audience members was noteworthy at all, it’s likely because of how relatively civil the whole thing was. The gun-rights advocates quickly quiet down after their short responses; Heslin appears largely unfazed by the shouts.

We should be careful about demonizing those with whom we disagree.

I today old lizards Cone out of hybernation day or something? This makes two members of the class of 2004 who just about never post suddenly showing up….

Also I am with Charles “second amendment” as written may give you the right to own an assault weapon, but it does not give you a reason to own one.

I agree. I will not now argue about what constitutes an “assault weapon”, but it is true that having the right to own one does not mean that there is a reason to own one.

However, I would really enjoy taking an AR15 to the range. I have never fired one. I understand that they are fun to shoot and are often used in competitions. In fact, I have only shot with the weapons required for my watch qualifications in the Submarine Force.

I also agree with those who call for more control over who can own weapons. Clearly not everyone should be permitted to own a gun. No right is absolute.

Going to dinner with my wife, so good night.

My solution to this problem is have the ranges loan guns to people who go there, people can shoot those guns, but they can also be more safely locked up when not in use.

This evening, however, I watched the entire, unedited video.
The was no heckling.

The audience was respectful throughout Mr. Heslin’s testimony. When he challenged attendees with a question, to which he seemingly wanted an answer, a few gun advocates briefly responded. When the chairman called for order, they quickly obeyed.
