In Newtown, Gun Nuts Heckle Father of Murdered Child

Very bad craziness
Wingnuts • Views: 36,836

In a hearing at the Connecticut state capitol yesterday, pro-gun demonstrators actually heckled the father of a 6-year old boy killed in the Newtown school massacre.

There are no words.

The sometimes boisterous public hearing — after nearly four hours of testimony from State Police, parents of slain Newtown first-graders and city mayors — seemed dominated by gun owners, who railed at more than 90 proposed bills.

“The Second Amendment!” was shouted a couple of times by as many as a dozen gun enthusiasts in the meeting room as Neil Heslin, holding a photo of his slain 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, asked why Bushmaster assault-style weapons are allowed to be sold in the state.

“There are a lot of things that should be changed to prevent what happened,” said Heslin, who said he grew up using guns and was undisturbed by the interruption of his testimony.

“That wasn’t just a killing, it was a massacre,” said Heslin, who recalled dropping off his son at Sandy Hook Elementary school shortly before Lanza opened fire. “I just hope some good can come out of this.”

The 9/11 truthers were seen by most everyone as marginalized whack jobs. The Newton Truthers have an agenda and national organizations giving them tacit support.

But I see these recent gun tragedies as a powerful emetic, bringing up the wretched bile that has been sloshing about in America’s stomach. Now the GOP has to distance itself from this sort of rhetoric or plant its policies in the midst of a fetid puddle of green puke.

The Newtown truthers are coming out of the woodwork and revealing themselves to be vested in multiple conspiracies (whether it’s birtherism, troofers, or others) - such as the professor who thinks that school shooting are a plot to take your guns away.

Then again, paranoia runs deep in American politics. Fear of government action was a driving force in the nation’s creation, the establishment of the Bill of Rights, and it’s a driving factor in the opposition to even the most benign and sensible firearms regulations (like universal background checks).

I understand that people back then were wary of government, Democracy eas a new and untetsed concept. But as far as I know, our government was freely and fairly elected.

The only way to paint our government as tyrannical or as usurpers is to subscribe to birther conspiracy theories and all the other ridiculous postulates of the wingnut worldview.

If you want an example of this lunacy, when I mentioned the shooting to my gun-nut relative, it was replied to with a haughty /sigh followed by “Great! now Obama’s going to come after gun owners!”

Yes, the mind of the enemy. Rotten and soulless, just like those people who would scream at a man who just lost his 6 year-old child. Some asshole shouting “2nd amendment” sounds a lot like a paid NRA plant of some sort.

Some warned that gun ownership is a check on governmental tyranny and charged that Obama has an agenda to disarm them and take away rights guaranteed under the state Constitution and the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Again, it’s always the extremes. It’s never “properly regulate weapons so that criminals and crazies can’t access them.” It’s either unfettered access or complete banishment. These fucking people already possess weapons-grade stupidity, that should be enough.

These delusional freaks are hell-bent on forcing a violent showdown, with amoral profiteers like Limbaugh and Jones focusing and inciting their rage at every opportunity. In my darker moments I think it might be best if it did happen. The pathology these people represent would be exposed for what it is, their illusions destroyed, and their dire influence over such things as public education consigned to the dustbin of history. There would be many, many innocent victims, though, and heavy costs in other ways. It would probably cost us our position of world leadership, for example. I do not therefore advocate such a thing, but I think it becomes more likely with each passing day.

And the nuts are coming out of the woodwork. Here’s a guy who only wanted to exercise his 2nd Amendment rights in public…but still freaked the fuck out of everyone at the grocery store.

[Link: www.nbc29.com…]

Police say he was cooperative and did nothing illegal. Officers did find a note in his pocket spelling out his intent to express his 2nd Amendment rights. Police say they could not release man’s name because he was not arrested.

National Rifle Association (NRA) instructor Bill Davis says the gun incident was inappropriate and could have turned violent.

“I think it reflects on all gun owners in a bad way,” Davis said. “I’ve talked to six NRA instructors this morning about it. Why did he have that note in his pocket? I think - this is my personal opinion - I think he expected to be shot, so they would have found the note and said he wasn’t doing nothing.”

I call it a dry run to see what it felt like to walk into a soft target loaded to kill. The guy’s got no criminal record, but he’s not well.

Either they are crazy to believe it or they embrace this fantasy because the lie allows them to justify their gun worship position (and no one is taking your guns away with the new proposals)/

That’s the plan. And then when the next tragedy prompts a new round of discussion and subsequent government action, they’ll turn it around and say “look, the government is trying to take away freedoms again!” Rinse, repeat. The NRA and the weapons market see a huge boon in donations and income, a bunch of folks are dead, we get a bunch of useless regulations enacted that won’t do anything to actually limit gun violence.

Indeed.

The Supreme Court has upheld firearms regulations, and even Heller indicated that reasonable regulations can be enacted by Congress and the states. (That was Scalia writing the opinion too - so it’s not as though it’s some liberal gun confiscator).

At this point I think yelling “2nd amendment” is pretty much in the realm of going Godwin in this issue. The longer an argument about guns goes on, the greater chance somebody will mention the 2nd amendment, and it can then be assumed that person has lost said argument.

re: #22 Vicious Babushka

None of the proposed changes would result in gun confiscation other than the problematic provision relating to the mentally ill who possess firearms and who pose a danger to others. No one is going to be taking the guns away, least of all handguns - handguns that are the weapon of choice in over half of all homicides and suicides.

Background checks wont deprive someone of firearms they already have, but could prevent someone who shouldn’t have them from getting them - like felons and could reduce straw/sham sales that allow firearms to get into the hands of those who shouldn’t have them (minors, felons, etc.)

One of the nuts’ favorite “take over” fantasies involves seizing the local National Guard armory to prevent the Guard from coming to the aid of any police or citizens who haven’t come over to the nuts’ side. Ironically, this would represent a genuine, literal attempt to disarm a well-regulated militia. It is not absolutely impossible that a gang might seize an armory, they are not heavily guarded after all, but getting to the weapons would be something else again, since physical security is very heavy indeed. This would not keep the guard from mobilizing in any case. Most guardsmen, being members of a well-regulated militia, have privately owned weapons. They would simply meet somewhere else with these weapons in hand, grab more from the local Big Box if necessary (paying with a state check of course), and move forward from there. Even a lightly armed force has many, many advantages when it is properly trained and led and its members are used to working together. I’ve also heard of nuts who think they could hold off federal reinforcements simply by closing the local airport, an easy enough task for an armed mob. In reality, this would probably delay reinforcement for a couple of hours at most, until a helicopter lift and road convoys could be organized.

Severe storms are expected across the Central US and into the Southeast. Tornado outbreak possible, and damaging straight line winds likely as a front moves through ushering in colder air.

Areas affected: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, northern Louisiana, southeastern Missouri, western Mississippi and southwestern Tennessee.

As these storms are likely to produce significant damage, sufficient enough to warrant disaster declarations, I can’t wait for their Congressional representatives in the House and Senate to get up and demand disaster aid right after they just got through voting against it for Sandy victims. Watch as they go into full pretzel logic mode about how they shouldn’t be constrained by offsetting cuts for their disaster aid, while demanding the same with Sandy aid and voting against because it didn’t have that provision. The hypocrisy and irony will be palpable.

And yes, I’m looking at the likes of John Cornyn and James Inhofe in particular.

Brands with good repair records from best to worst (via CR): Bosch, Whirlpool Miele, Kenmore, and then GE. Maytag and LG are at the bottom of the heap. GE towards the middle.

Long Island Ice Tea is the lowest of the low. “Let’s put all these different liquors in a glass and then try to hide the crappy taste with coke.”

When I’m trying to get hammered (which is vanishingly rare nowadays) it’s gin martinis all the way.

It’s a Kenmore. I love it when it works. I am disappointed that it breaks easy. In august I replaced the Control panel. Now this. I think it’s the thermal fuse this time but i’m still investigating. It’s not expensive to fix but it’s a pain in the ass.

Kenmore is made by any of several manufacturers, incl GE and Whirlpool. Sears has them rebranded. Used to make them night shift while going to UofL.

I have a Kenmore, and it required a repair within 6 months of purchase - a loose fitting caused the thing to flood out. Otherwise, I’ve been very happy with it - super quiet and does a great job washing dishes.

Brands with good repair records from best to worst (via CR): Bosch, Whirlpool Miele, Kenmore, and then GE. Maytag and LG are at the bottom of the heap. GE towards the middle.

We bought a Fisher-Paykel washer/dryer set and fridge. No problems with any of it, except being missing feet for the fridge when it came in, and we got those in two days.

Not bad service for a company out of Australia.

This winter has had some wild weather swings throughout the midwest, to go with some record high temperatures. For example, when the swings have occurred around here, we get phenomena like hail followed by sleet and snow.

So it’s January 29th, and it looks like a strong tornado outbreak is possible across much of the Mississippi delta region up to Missouri.

Funny, Bryan Fischer was trolling twitter about “global warming is a myth!” when OKC got snow over Christmas. Where is he now that typical springtime violent weather is showing up 2 months early?

Good morning lizards!

My dishwasher broke this morning. It’s the second time in 5 months and it’s only a couple years old. My old one lasted 15 years before it died.

Grrrrrr

Try calling the home office and writing letters to the CEO. We had some success with that when our Whirlpool washer conked out 3 times after it went out of warranty.

My letters stated in part that I felt it was unacceptable to spend that much money on an appliance that apparently had such a tiny window for use. Be polite but direct. Try posting something to Twitter with the appropriate hashtags. That seems to get people’s attention.

We still had to pay for some repairs, but the overall cost was reduced by interacting with Whirlpool. The build quality and lifespan of today’s appliances is frustrating beyond belief.

Maytag doesn’t exist.

They were bought by whirlpool and all their products are now whirpools in a redesigned box with more rounded corners to look more maytagish.

Kenmore makes nothing. For laundry, 99% of Kenmores are whirlpool or Frigidaire. And my experiences with GE are not good at all. Half of GE laundry equipment is made by Frigidaire, with a large extra markup on parts, the other half is GE only. I’ve seen GE coin-op dryers that look identical on the outside, but one has Frigidaire parts on the inside and the other GE parts. And I don’t know LG well, but they are highly rated. Better to look for Amazon ratings on popular machines than to trust anything else.

No self respecting gun owner would heckle the father of a shooting victim, especially a child for Gods sake!

Those people do no represent the majority of gun owners, I should know, I am one and there is no f-ing way those people should be there going after the father of a victim of the New Town shooting! I’m sadly ashamed and sincerely pissed off enough to say these people aren’t thinking clearly, all they see is “GUN BAN”.

They don’t see the big picture, which is, only people who want to harm large numbers of people want those types of firearms. And if they have children in their home they blasted well shouldn’t own them! My God, the thought of a pissed off and hormonal teenager getting hold of one and using it makes my hair stand on end! If I had a child my firearms would be sold in a heart beat!

I, as a responsible hand gun owner, fail to under stand why any Joe Schmoe off the street should need to own a firearm that can shoot off over 100 rounds in 20 seconds! Those types of firearms belong in the hands of the military, not under a law abiding citizens bed where anyone can get to them!

If you cant defend your home with a ten round magazine then you shouldn’t own a gun! There’s no need to spray bullets around endangering your neighbors if a burglar is in your home, and the ammo those firearms use will pierce brick walls as well as any host of things and just keep going! I have frangible ammo in my home firearm which will break apart upon impact with any solid object, including glass thus no innocent bystander would be in the danger of being injured or killed!

We have a rule in our home, if there’s a burglar in the house, barricade yourself in the back bedroom, hide in the closet, call 911 and let them take anything they want with one exception! That exception being if they try to break into the room I’m in it has become personal eminent danger to me and anyone else with me and if they get in, then and only then shoot!

Those idiot hecklers make the rest of us look really bad and I personally resent them with every fiber of my being!

And, just for the record, I haven’t belonged to the NRA for more than 10 years due to their short sighted and misguided broad sweeping rejection of the control of assault type firearms, not to mention they deserted the gun owners of California when we needed them the most!

I’m not posting this to start a fight, but I just feel that I needed to state my position on this subject.

There have already been tornado outbreaks earlier this month centered on Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. Some scattered damage, but no major tornados (EF-3 or higher). But so far this month has witnessed fewer tornadoes than last year and below 3 year average for January.

Today could change all that.

We’re seeing more storms, and more that are further afield from the traditional tornado alleys (Southeast early in the year, moving towards the traditional tornado alley later in the year).

I get that the brands are rebadged products, but there are differences and CR does the testing across brands/badged products so the distinctions are quite real.

It could be that a particular Kenmore was made by Whirlpool in factory X, while other Whirlpools are made in factory Y. The Kenmore quality is better (or worse) than the Whirlpool, even though both made by same company.

Put another way, we know GM makes a whole range of autos, Chevy, Buick, GMC, etc., but some do better on quality and reliability than others (across brands and specific offerings).

But this much is certain - stay away from LG. Bad jobu.

Absolutely do it. You’ll be surprised with the results.

A few things I like to do:

1. Always remember that the person you’re talking to didn’t cause the problem. Treat them well. Don’t curse, but be blunt in the fact that the company should be ashamed of the product failing like that.

2. I try to acknowledge that I’m not trying to scam them. When dealing with Whirlpool, I mentioned that if the washer was 10 years old and being used 80 time a day, they’d have every right to hang up on me. But for a product to fall apart so soon after warranty is a disgrace.

Good luck.

Also about LG.

I remember someone I knew wanted to replace a small ventless, washes-then-dries machine.

Her original was Ariston (or some rebranded Ariston) - she went on Amazon and looked at the ratings for similar machines. The LG cost twice what an Ariston did, but it was significantly higher rated and she went with it.

What can I say about the Aristons? The controls are confusing, and if you dry towels in them a lot, then you’ll need to find someone who knows how to clean out the fan after a few years because it will fill up with lint.

Mitt Romney said that millions of Americans “don’t care to take responsibility for their own lives.” Part of “responsibility” is “moral responsibility”. Any politician who may have encouraged deranged hatred in the past, and who has a public voice (e.g. Mitt Romney) has a moral responsibility to speak out against hatred and in favor of sanity.

Of course, anyone who currently encourages such hateful behavior has a moral responsibility to stop doing so, at the very least.

GOP getting new talking points on immigration.

When addressing securing our borders:

Do use the wording “enforcement of our borders includes more border patrol, technology, and building a fence where it makes sense”

Don’t use phrases like “send them all back”, “electric fence”, “build a wall along the entire border”

When talking about immigrants:

Do use “undocumented immigrant” when referring to those here without documentation

Don’t use the word “illegals” or “aliens”

Don’t use the term “anchor baby”

Far more don’ts than dos on that list. It’s going to be a steep learning curve for the GOP.

McCain: ‘We’ve got to use drones’ to secure the U.S.-Mexico border

An hour after expanding on a bipartisan immigration proposal on Monday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called for an increase in security technology at the U.S.-Mexico border, including unmanned drones in a Fox News interview.

“We have to use a lot of high-tech — we’ve got to use drones,” McCain told “Your World with Caputo” guest host Eric Bolling. “We’ve got to do a lot of things to get that border secure, but that must be done.”

According to The Hill, the plan, crafted by McCain and seven other U.S. senators, calls for border security standards to be set by a group of officials from border states, who would have the ability to stall a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants if they are not satisfied by security efforts.

So not only does he want to use drones on the border, but these geniuses want to give Jan Brewer and Rick Perry veto power over immigration policy? WTF.

It scars the lungs and makes it difficult to do all kinds of things, sharp smells and even laughter sets it off. According to my doctor bronchitis is a secondary bacterial infection that has set in due to the flu lowering your immune system. I always have to go to the doctor for an antibiotic when I get bronchitis, once you’ve had it you’re prone to it. Take care of yourself, okay?

If it is only congestion without a bacterial infection (ie Sinusitis) involved, drinking LOTS of fluids and taking an over-the-counter expectorant (Mucinex, etc) will typically clear you up in a few days. I would advise against taking antihistamines when trying to clear your lungs - it will only prolong the congestion. If you do have a sinus infection, then you’re going to need to get a antibiotic prescription in all likelyhood. Otherwise it might take weeks to clear up, and you run further risk of pneumonia.

U.S., Yemen forces seize Iranian weapons

SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 29 (UPI) — Yemeni and U.S. military forces intercepted a boat carrying explosives, weapons and money believed to have originated in Iran, U.S. officials said.

Unnamed U.S. officials briefed on the incident off the Yemeni coast, said Monday there were indications that Iran was smuggling weapons and explosives to insurgents in Yemen, The New York Times said.

A boarding party from the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Farragut accompanied Yemeni forces in the raid Jan. 23, the Times said.

Weapons were reportedly found in three cargo sections of the 130-foot boat. The weapons included air-to-surface missiles, C4 military-grade explosives, 122-mm shells, rocket-propelled grenades and bomb making equipment, a statement from the Yemeni government Monday said.

U.S. officials said the weapons were made in Iran and is an attempt by the Islamic Republic to reach out to rebels and other political figures in Yemen, the Times said.

The NRA and the so called “nuts” are anything but second amendment supporters. The NRA is a sock puppet for the continuing money to be made by fear and loathing. The Nuts are those whose love of America go all the way to wanting to be able to take down a cop with body armor. It’s not about the right to own a gun, it’s about the right to have a semi automatic assault rifle that can be customized with military style options and sometime with the right gunsmith, turned full auto. Remember that the NRA pushed for cop killer bullets. So when the nuts, who in this case are creeps and worse, heckle a father who lost a son thanks to the insanity that the NRA supports, I think you’ve seen the true intent of both. I have looked at vehicles with NRA membership stickers on them for years and my only thought was “Dipshit idiot sucker. That sticker allows him to park in a handicapped spot.” Fuck these people. Dude’s doing damage control. He’s apologized for his tweet after getting a few WTF replies - some from his own friends apparently.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s the kind of sick statement that an apology can’t fix. That was his real, honest opinion. The apology came when he realized how fucked up he looked.

He’s far from the only conservative who responded like that on Twitter.

I contracted a bad case of bronchitis when I was 20 or so, and I still get flareups from time to time. Of course, it’s likely not a help that I smoke as well.

One of these days, I really need to quit. I’ve “quit” about three times now, the longest being eight months. Then I got together with a friend, and watching her smoke made me grab her pack and light one up.

Dammit.

I keep remembering the kook who thought a Barrett .50 rifle could literally knock an APC on its side. Even this fool realized that the super-gun would not stop actual tanks but he postulated that knocking out their infantry support would allow the tanks to be isolated and finished off with molotov cocktails. I guess he thinks the Iraqi insurgents were just too dumb to have thought of this.

Knowing a couple of folk who own a Barrett .50, you have to wonder why anyone would want spend $12,000+ for one gun.

Yea, I know the real answer, but it’s so stupid.

re: #232 Lidane

No, ownership isn’t a disease, but use of firearms most certainly is. It has a real and tangible medical cost that adds up and tests the health care delivery system.

The health care and economic costs of gun violence in the US are equally staggering. According to the Public Services Research Institute in 2008, firearm homicide and assault cost federal, state and local governments $4.7 billion annually including costs for medical care, mental health, emergency transport, police, criminal justice and lost taxes. They also state that when lost productivity, lost quality of life, and pain and suffering are added to medical costs, estimates of the annual cost of firearm violence range from $20 billion to $100 billion. According to the National Center for Disease Control, the cost of firearm fatalities is the highest of any injury-related death. In fact, the average cost of a gunshot related death is $33,000, while gun-related injuries total over $300,000 for each occurrence. Unlike car crash victims who are privately insured, roughly 80% of gunshot victims are uninsured. In the Journal of the American Medical Association (June 14, 1995), researchers found that private health insurance pays for the majority of the treatment of firearm-related injuries though it may cover only about one-fourth of the total injury victims. As a result taxpayers and insurance holders are unfairly burdened by the enormous and largely preventable health care cost associated with firearm violence.

Going back further, a rigorous study from 1999 (so the dollar figures need to be adjusted to present value - meaning they’d be much higher now), found that the “… mean medical cost per injury of about $17,000, the 134,445 (95% confidence interval [CI], 109,465-159,425) gunshot injuries in the United States in 1994 produced $2.3 billion (95% CI, $2.1 billion–$2.5 billion) in lifetime medical costs (in 1994 dollars, using a 3% real discount rate), of which $1.1 billion (49%) was paid by US taxpayers. Gunshot injuries due to assaults accounted for 74% of total costs.”

It might not be a disease, but doctors are sure seeing a whole lot of it in their emergency rooms nationwide.

HOW DID THAT WHISKY REBELLION TURN OUT?

So you’re on the same sheet of music, they’re going to point to the Battle of Athens. (August 1, 1946. See here and scroll down to chronology of the battle for full details.) Understand that in some ways it’s a compelling argument.

Simple overview: a political machine had been running McMinn county, TN, for many years. In 1946 a host of veterans were home and had decided to run against the machine. The machine did what the machine does but the veterans objected. The machine had 75-100 or so armed forces (police, temporary and full-time deputies, and a state patrolman), and they tried to force the election (after promising open). The vets who fought numbered around 500. The vets won.

Yeah, look again at the number of participants on each side. Then consider what the current so-called patriots number. Notice which side had combatants with recent combat experience.

But every time you talk whiskey rebellion they’re going to think battle of athens. Just a point to keep in mind.

As The Hollywood Reporter explains:

“I would love to take credit for this,” Limbaugh said Monday. “I’d love to say that I find myself here because of a brilliantly conceived and flawlessly executed strategy, but one of the reasons that Fox News and I stand out like sore thumbs here is because the rest of the media is gone. The rest of the media is in the tank. The rest of the media has long ago ceased doing their job. They’re not reporting, they’re not curious, they’re not holding Obama accountable. They are on board. 10 years ago I fell and broke my ankle. I thought it was just “sprained,” dragged myself home limping on the BROKEN ANKLE and wrapped it in an ace bandage. I did not have health insurance at the time.

Years later (by the time I finally did get insurance), developed arthritis in both ankles. Orthopedist ordered xrays and noticed the remodeled broken ankle.

I’m kind of up now. Hurts. Gotta use a crutch to walk on it. Dreading going to the ER but I may end up doing that. I can move it around and such.

Fox News contributor frets Obama planning to ban Fox News

Reacting to President Barack Obama’s criticism of the role the conservative Fox News Channel plays in U.S. politics, network contributor Peter Johnson, Jr. said Monday night that the president might just find a way to ban watching Fox News.

Johnson appeared on the network’s nightly opinion show “Hannity” on Monday, where he and host Sean Hannity took Obama’s recent critique of right-wing media — wherein he told The New Republic that Fox News and Rush Limbaugh are a key stumbling block to compromise in Congress — as some sort of forthcoming policy mandate to revoke the First Amendment.

“In other words, forget about that little thing called freedom of speech, differing views,” Hannity said. “Instead, he wants any, all opposing voices to be, what, silenced? That includes the opinions that you hear on this program and watch every single night.”

Ha define irony, Artur Davis the former Alabama Democratic Congressman is thinking about running for state senate here in NoVa against Dave Marsden, a Republican turned Democrat. Would love to hear Davis claim that Marsden’s ideas are “too out of touch” from a guy who moved up here because he knows he’s too moderate liberal for the Alabama GOP but just enough for Virginia GOP. And Marsden I can tell you from personal experience is one of the good guys. Really cares about young people and actually likes to listen to us rather than just be a condescending jerk.

NRA’s LaPierre: Universal Background Checks A Waste Of Time

LaPierre is among those scheduled to tesify at the Senate Judiciary Committee’s gun violence hearing Wednesday. The NRA sent out his testimony Tuesday. LaPierre once again plans to tout the NRA’s call for armed guards in every school as well as the group’s call for loosen privacy laws the group says keep mental health records from being included in the extisting background check system. But when it comes to expanding background checks to cover all firearms transactions, LaPierre will tell the Senate there’s little point.

“When it comes to the issue of background checks, let’s be honest – background checks will never be ‘universal’ – because criminals will never submit to them,” LaPierre’s testimony reads.

Because none of the guns used in any of the recent shootings were obtained legally.

As a matter of fact, the reason why the BSA has these policies in place is because of (mostly) married “family men” who liked to diddle little kids. Pedophilia is not about sex, though that is a means to an end and a bonus for the pervs; it’s about control and power over others.

No gay folks in all of those leader abuse scandals, AFAIK.

Notice I said caps. Not restrictions on things like criminal history and such, nothing on the category of deportation of immigrants not yet citizens for various actions. Just remove the cap on how many can enter the country with the intent of immigrating.

I’m strongly in favor of easing and streamling immigration, just so people who are here who want to live productive lives free of fear are allowed to do so, while Law Enforcement can focus on finding real criminals, not a gardener who overstayed their visa or a spouse who married an American without filling out the right forms first.

362 engineer cat  Tue, Jan 29, 2013 11:19:56am

what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander

all the executives who’ve mandated that the ‘agile’ development process be followed in the pgming shops should be required to observe it themselves

that means having a planning session for every two week period where you ‘break down’ all the ‘tasks’ you plan on doing in the next two weeks, write them down on sticky notes, and put hour estimates on all of them

then every day you get to stand up in front of your managers and account for every hour you spend the previous day, and mark the time off on the sticky notes. if the actual tasks get out of synch with your sticky notes, you can explain why you failed to plan properly

but somehow i tend to think that executives would feel that they shouldn’t be required to work this way

I watched both videos of the hearing, and the accusation that the NBC clip was “deceptively edited” is just more idiotic bullshit from the Daily Caller’s head moron, “Jim Treacher.”

The unedited video has a lot of dead air. Long pauses. They edited it to remove the long pauses. End of story.

The chair specifically admonished the gun nuts to stop interrupting Neil Heslin’s testimony. They were completely out of order, and “heckling” is a good word for it. The excuse that they were just “answering his question” is laughable.

The unedited video does not make these cretins who interrupted his testimony look one bit better.

Judging by the nasally voices of the hecklers, they sounded like a bunch of truthers. No wait. They’re no doubt truthers since the guns nuts have now morphed into a bunch of PrisonPlanet, Infowars watching, Alex Jones nuts.

There were at least a dozen of these loons in the room, probably sitting there seething while Mr. Heslin spoke.

From Slate, there was no heckling. They have the unedited video.

Was the Sandy Hook Dad Really “Heckled”? The Video Suggests Otherwise.

At around the 15-minute mark in the video below you’ll hear an untold number of gun-rights supporters shout out a variety of Second Amendment-related remarks, just as the the Connecticut Post originally reported occurred in a story headlined “Father of Newtown victim heckled at hearing.” But the video also shows that those who interjected were responding to a question posed by Heslin.
“Is there anybody in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question, why anybody in this room needs to have one of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips?” Heslin said before pausing and looking around the room. He then continued: “And not one person can answer that question or give me an answer.” It was at that point that the cries of “Second Amendment” can be heard.

Now it’s worth pointing out that the audience members aren’t supposed to interrupt a witness—a lawmaker running the hearing can be heard asking for the crowd to be quiet—and it’s possible that Heslin’s question was a rhetorical one, and his pause was simply for dramatic effect. But regardless, it’s fairly clear that those gun-rights advocates who spoke up were doing so in response to what they heard as a question. Even if such actions represent an interruption they nonetheless appear to fall well short of heckling, an act that most often comes with an air of harassment associated with it.

If the exchange between Heslin and the pro-gun audience members was noteworthy at all, it’s likely because of how relatively civil the whole thing was. The gun-rights advocates quickly quiet down after their short responses; Heslin appears largely unfazed by the shouts.

We should be careful about demonizing those with whom we disagree.

Also I am with Charles “second amendment” as written may give you the right to own an assault weapon, but it does not give you a reason to own one.

I agree. I will not now argue about what constitutes an “assault weapon”, but it is true that having the right to own one does not mean that there is a reason to own one.

However, I would really enjoy taking an AR15 to the range. I have never fired one. I understand that they are fun to shoot and are often used in competitions. In fact, I have only shot with the weapons required for my watch qualifications in the Submarine Force.

I also agree with those who call for more control over who can own weapons. Clearly not everyone should be permitted to own a gun. No right is absolute.

Going to dinner with my wife, so good night.

My solution to this problem is have the ranges loan guns to people who go there, people can shoot those guns, but they can also be more safely locked up when not in use.

I had believed the heckling story too, which apparently had originated with the Connecticut Post and was picked up by the blogosphere.

This evening, however, I watched the entire, unedited video.
The was no heckling.

The audience was respectful throughout Mr. Heslin’s testimony. When he challenged attendees with a question, to which he seemingly wanted an answer, a few gun advocates briefly responded. When the chairman called for order, they quickly obeyed.

I urge everyone to do the same.

You may come to a different conclusion.

My den leader when I was in the scouts was the mother of one of my scout mates. I think she had sex with a male at least on one occasion.

Cub Scouts have Den Mothers. In my experience the Boy Scouts always have male leadership.

SO not defending Mr Fischer’s outburst in any way.
