Yes, the Father of a Murdered Newtown Child Was Heckled by Gun Nuts

Right wingers jump to defend loathsome behavior
Wingnuts • Views: 18,622

I’m not always a fan of Lawrence O’Donnell, but he gets it exactly right in this clip.

The right wing pro-gun cult swung into high gear yesterday to defend the hecklers at that Newtown hearing; practically every wingnut blogger was shouting in unison that there was no “heckling” — the people who interrupted Neil Heslin’s testimony were simply “answering his question.” They’ve actually managed to bully some media people into swallowing this line of BS:

But in a hearing like this, it’s common knowledge that the audience is not supposed to shout at speakers — and when the hecklers shouted “SECOND AMENDMENT” at Heslin, the chairperson admonished them not to interrupt. Watch the longer clip of Heslin’s statement above; he was asking rhetorical questions, not telling these loons it was OK to shout.

The fact is that despite the right wing’s attempt to defend this horrific behavior, it exactly fits the dictionary definition of “heckling:”

heckle |ˈhekəl| verb

1. interrupt (a public speaker) with derisive or aggressive comments

And the state of Connecticut’s rules for hearings like this one also make it very clear that this heckling behavior was out of order:

Decorum: A hearing is an important step in the process of making law, so it is a formal occasion. Please give your courteous attention to other speakers, regardless of their views. Don’t applaud or indicate pleasure or displeasure with anyone’s remarks.

I’m no longer surprised when the right stands up and defends truly awful viewpoints and behavior. In this case they’re defending the heckling of a father who is still grieving for his murdered son, and although it’s not surprising, it definitely is repulsive.

A lot of these people refuse to believe that Sandy Hook happened in the first place, it is no great leap for them to believe there was no heckling.

This is the time of year when I really get homesick for Arizona, temps hovering around freezing here in Germany and hardly any sun for weeks.

But this is not what I need to make me feel less homesick.

At least three injured in shooting at Phoenix business park. Fox News reporting 4 injured, and search underway for white male in his 60s.

If only residents of Arizona were allowed to openly carry firearms.

What gun problem?

*facepalm*

See, the solution is more guns!

Always more guns.

Probably too soon to talk about gun control.

Unpossible! Everyone knows that white people need an arsenal of guns to protect themselves from roving gangs of brown and black people.

Or at least to carry a concealed weapon without so much as a permit.

Hey - the window from the previous mass shooting hasn’t expired yet.

I don’t think we can run this one concurrently either - “too soon” windows run consecutively, as specified in the gun-nut manual.

I was about to post something about this not being the time to talk about gun control in the wingnut font, but that is quickly becoming the equivalent of posting “FIRST” in a thread with the frequency of these things going down.

Back to the posted topic. A website that I peruse and post on (occasionally) is discussing this topic. One poster, a right-winger who just appeared after guns started being discussed, said that the father of one of the victims was still grieving and shouldn’t have been speaking. Other right-wingers chimed in and blamed the town for making him speak or the father for not knowing what he was doing. I know that this is mild, compared to what I read on TGDN, but, for Pete’s sake, can’t people have compassion. This father obviously felt it would be cathartic to speak his mind. Why should anyone judge him? As though, if he waited, until he wasn’t grieving so much, he wouldn’t feel that way? Only one right-winger, when called on it, condemned the hecklers, but still felt the father was wrong to speak.

The right-wing mindset is beyond my comprehension.
