My wife is in Mesa on business. I immediately went into freakout mode, because the woman being loaded into an ambulance really looked like her.

I just got off the phone with her. She’s okay, thank God. I’m still a little freaked because the map doesn’t show much distance between the shooting scene and Mesa.

Ban violent movies! Except violent movies sponsored by the US Army or the CIA and that portray violence in a legitimately patriotic way! Those ones are OK!

Durham men charged with shooting each other

DURHAM, N.C. — Police said Wednesday that they have charged three Durham men in connection with a recent shooting on Trinity Avenue, including two who were wounded in the incident.

Two men were shot in the 900 block of West Trinity Avenue on Jan. 21. Police said Adam Yunus Coovadia and Brandon Neville shot each other and that Coovadia remains hospitalized.

Coovadia, 19, of State Street, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of possession of controlled substances within 1,000 feet of a school.

Neville, 20, of Waterford Valley Drive, faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

He has been released from the hospital and wasn’t in custody Wednesday.

A third man, Cedric Lamar Green, 20, of Autumn Ridge Drive, faces a charge of possession of a stolen firearm in connection with the shooting. He likewise wasn’t in custody Wednesday.

I’m glad no innocent people were hit. Sheesh, what is this, the Wild West?

I’ve got family out there too. In fact, their daughter was caught in one of the school lockdowns immediately after Newtown because someone saw something suspicious on that campus. Scary stuff indeed.

Not much information to work on. Reports indicate at least three shot and injured and that the suspect is a white male in his 60s.

Durbin Hits Back At NRA’s LaPierre: ‘You Missed That Point Completely’

“My problem with background checks is you are never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks. And all the law-abiding people, you’ll create an enormous federal bureaucracy, unfunded, hitting all the little people in the country, will have to go through it, pay the fees, pay the taxes,” LaPierre said. “We don’t even prosecute anybody right now that goes through the system we have. So, we’re going to make all those law-abiding people go through the system and then we aren’t going to prosecute any of the bad guys if they do catch one. None of it makes any sense in the real world. We have 80,000 police families in the NRA. We care about safety. We support what works.”

After a brief interlude by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the committee chairman, Durbin went after LaPierre.

“Mr. LaPierre, that’s the point,” Durbin fired back. “The criminals won’t go to purchase the guns because there’ll be a background check. We’ll stop them from original purchase. You missed that point completely. It’s basic.”

Gun advocate tells Senate: AR-15 is the ‘weapon of choice’ for women with crying babies

A senior fellow from the conservative Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) on Wednesday told a Senate committee that assault weapons should not be outlawed because they were the “weapon of choice” for young mothers who need a “scary-looking gun.”

At Senate Judiciary Hearing on gun violence, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) asked IWF’s Gayle Trotter, who also writes for The Daily Caller, if it would “disproportionately burden women” to ban assault rifles like the Bushmaster AR-15 used to slaughter 20 children in Newtown, Connecticut.

“Young women are speaking out as to why AR-15 weapons are their weapon of choice,” Trotter explained. “The guns are accurate. They have good handling. They’re light. They’re easy for women to hold.”

A pistol is easy to hold, relatively light, and with a moderate amount of training it is quite accurate at short range which tends to be the distance one faces an attacker at. Rifles of any size can be unwieldy at close range.

Meanwhile, the far right Media Research Center is launching a major PR offensive against MSNBC for that edited “heckling” video. This is where all the right wing blogs get their marching orders from.

Just received this email:

NBC DEMONIZES GUN OWNERS WITH PHONY ‘HECKLER’ STORY

BOZELL BLASTS “PATTERN OF DECEPTION” AT NBC NEWS

ALEXANDRIA, VA – On Monday’s edition of “Martin Bashir,” MSNBC ran footage of the testimony of Neil Heslin, the father of a Sandy Hook victim, in which it appears he is heckled by gun rights activists. MSNBC’s accompanying graphics box read “Mocked and Loaded. Sandy Hook Victim’s Father Heckled by Gun Rights Advocates.”

In reality, Heslin was not heckled. He posed a challenge to the audience, and the audience responded. The MSNBC version deliberately cut out Heslin’s challenge to make it appear as though he was interrupted by heckling gun advocates.

This is the third time in the past year in which NBC News has been caught dishonestly editing footage in order to push their liberal political agenda. Last March they edited the Trayvon Martin 911 call to make George Zimmerman appear racist. A few months later, Andrea Mitchell presented a dishonestly edited clip of Mitt Romney apparently being wowed by a sandwich ordering machine.

Media Research Center President Brent Bozell reacts:

“There is now a clear pattern of deception at NBC News. It is the most egregious violation of journalistic ethics. First they edited the Trayvon Martin 911 call to fabricate a racist motive. Then Andrea Mitchell tried to invent a fake “supermarket scanner moment” for Mitt Romney. Now MSNBC is deceptively editing footage of Sandy Hook testimony in order to smear gun rights advocates.

“This is not how a legitimate, professional news organization operates. MSNBC’s relentless anti-gun advocacy is bad enough, but this is downright dishonest. Time and time again NBC News has demonstrated why the American people can’t trust a single thing they say.”

Accused ‘Sextortionist’ May Have Coerced More Than 350 Women to Strip

An online “sextortionist” coerced as many as 350 women — some of them minors — into stripping for him, and then used the nude photos to blackmail them into continuing to strip, federal authorities said.

Karen “Gary” Kazaryan, 27, of Glendale, Calif., is charged with 15 counts of computer intrusion and 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, according to a federal indictment.

Authorities found approximately 3,000 pictures of nude or semi-nude women on Kazaryan’s computer, which appeared to have been stolen from the personal accounts of women or taken by Kazaryan on Skype, an FBI release said.

Special agents arrested Kazaryan on Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.

According to the indictment, Kazaryan would hack into the various accounts of his victims, including Facebook, email and Skype, and change the passwords.

He would then use his unauthorized access to “obtain information belonging to the victims from the accounts, including pictures, communications, and information about other accounts,” the indictment said.

Armed with personal information, authorities allege Kazaryan would then pose as a female friend online and “fraudulently persuade, or extort, those individuals into removing their clothes.”

When the victims discovered they had been duped and confronted Kazaryan, he would blackmail them with the nude photos he had already obtained in order to coerce more stripping, according to the indictment.

In some cases, he allegedly posted nude photos of his victims on their Facebook pages when they did not comply, according to an FBI news release.

Authorities said Kazaryan may have vicitmized as many as 350 women, some of whom were underage at the time.

If convicted on all counts, Kazaryan faces a maximum of 105 years in federal prison.

He was one of the stars of the movie “Dazed and Confused,” and according to police, it’s also the best way to describe his night in Scottsdale.

That mug shot is pretty embarrassing — but it wasn’t the most embarrassing thing that occurred during a chaotic night in Scottsdale for the actor.

…According to the police report, London repeatedly told officers he was a rich and famous actor. Officers say the antics continued in the squad car.

“At one point he defecated in the back of the car and that was on the way from the bar where he was arrested to the jail.”

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday London took to Twitter saying: “I would never say or do the crap they are reporting… Some guy thought I was hitting on his girl and had me jumped. …I hate Arizona… wait till you see the real pictures. I have a right orbital fracture and sinus fracture. The truth will win.”

“Scottsdale’s a nice place to come and visit but if you get overly intoxicated then your experience is probably not going to be that good,” said Clark.

The backseats of squad cars are plastic and are hosed off after cases such as that.

For those of you who said I should have given the Sheriff a break…

Drunk woman says she fired gun because anti-gun control sheriff said it was OK

An intoxicated woman in Milwaukee says that she fired a weapon during an argument with her niece because she had heard Wisconsin Sheriff David A. Clarke’s radio ad saying that citizens should get “in the game” and arm themselves instead of calling 911.

A criminal complaint obtained by the Journal Sentinel indicated that 36-year-old Makisha Cooper had told police that she was following Clarke’s advice that “simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.”

Cooper said “that she knows her rights regarding having a firearm because she heard Sheriff Clarke on the radio stating that she could own a gun to protect herself,” according to the complaint.

Police determined that a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun that she presented to them had recently been fired. Cooper explained that she had fired the gun once in connection to a fight she was having with her niece.

Three Critically Wounded in Shooting at Phoenix Office Complex - U.S. News

Three people were critically wounded Wednesday, one of them with life-threatening injuries, when a gunman opened fire at a Phoenix office complex, fire officials told NBC News.

Authorities said the gunman was not in custody. NBC station KPNX of Phoenix reported on air that authorities were believed to be seeking a man who fled in a white vehicle.

Three other people sustained minor injuries in the incident at a complex near 16th Street and Glendale Avenue, Phoenix fire Capt. Scott McDonald said.

Senator Catches NRA Head In Epic Flip Flop

Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) caught National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre in a significant contradiction during Wednesday’s hearing on preventing gun violence. Since the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut the nation’s most influential gun lobby has opposed the growing bipartisan push for universal background checks, arguing that such a policy would infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law abiding Americans. But as Leahy pointed out, the group has supported the reasonable background checks in the past.

To be fair, you mostly don’t even see that in the movies because it’s so implausible that writers and directors figure no one is going to believe that could possibly happen. You know what’s even better when fending off assailants than an AR-15? A sawed-off 12-gauge. Relatively bearable kick, enormous spread pattern. 3 people attack you, you don’t even have to aim. Just kind of point along the correct axis and pull the trigger. If they’re close, it will be closed caskets for all bad guys.

When our house was broken into 2 years ago, the police officer who came over to take the burglary report gave us advice on avoiding another break-in. He recommended stuff like an alarm system, outdoor flood lamps, keeping all first-floor & basement windows locked & bolted, a dog.

Burglars will generally go for the low hanging fruit.

Of course Zedushka asked the officer if we should get a gun. He shrugged and said that in his experience it was less helpful than the other things he recommended.

Jim Daly Cites Elie Wiesel Holocaust Quote to Protest Gays in the Boy Scouts

Neutrality is often an attractive option, especially when the goal is to not offend. But in this case, I’m reminded of what the great humanitarian and political activist Elie Wiesel once wrote about trying to remain neutral when it comes to moral affairs:

We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.

At stake in this debate is not just the golden brand of the Boy Scouts but most importantly the character and safety of the boys involved.

That’s right: Daly is using a Wiesel quote to compare the Boy Scouts becoming neutral on gay members to countries that were neutral during the Holocaust.

We had a string of robberies in my area a few years ago. We were never touched. 2 100-pound dogs. Only reason I can think we weren’t hit.

Most burglars etc. aren’t looking to kill etc. They’re just looking to quickly steal some expensive shit (electronics/jewelry) and get out.

I’m wondering about putting up a sign explaining that burglars are unlikely to find much that ‘s worth their while-something along the line of “Don’t bother, we still have a phone with an actual dial on it”

Stockholm David Frum syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy, sympathy and have positive feelings towards their captors, sometimes to the point of defending them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness. The FBI’s Hostage Barricade Database System shows that roughly 27% of victims show evidence of Stockholm David Frum syndrome.

Meet The 9 Year-Old Girl Who Likely Would Be Alive Today If High-Capacity Magazines Were Illegal

The shooter in Tuscon showed up with two 33-round magazines, one of which was in his 9mm. He unloaded the contents of that magazine in 15 seconds — very quickly. It all happened very, very fast. The first bullet went into Gabby’s head. Bullet number 13 went into a 9 year-old girl named Christina Taylor Greene, who was very interested in democracy and our government, and really deserved a full life committed to advancing those ideas. If [the shooter] had a 10-round magazine? Well, let me back up.

When he tried to reload one 33-round magazine with another 33-round magazine, he dropped it, and a woman named Patricia Maisch grabbed it, and it gave bystanders time to tackle him. I contend if that same thing had happened when he was trying to reload one 10-round magazine with another 10-round magazine, meaning he did not have access to a high capacity magazine, and the same thing happened, Christina Taylor Greene would be alive today. I certainly am willing to give up my ability to own a high-capacity magazine to bring that young woman back.

According to an official in the Dale County, Ala. sheriff’s department, the man who took a child hostage after shooting a bus driver on Tuesday is a “survivalist” with “anti-America” views.

I said the same thing WRT aurora. A dark movie theater filled with smoke from smoke bombs and everyone armed…what could possibly have gone wrong?

The NRA-types are coming from a 1950’s position thinking that all those carrying a firearm will be trained (at some point in their lives) in a military or law enforcement type mind-set to follow the chain-of-command. They honestly think that an armed citizenry of 2012 will sit-tight, wait for orders and not just start shooting.

They should make a first person shooter, where everyone looks identical, everyone is armed, but you only win when you shoot the bad guy with the gun. But there is no way for you to be able to identify the good guy from the bad guy, seeing everyone has guns.

I think part of the reason why they don’t have as much fear of them is. They used to be the big threat in their campaign if they didn’t tow the line. Either by denying them campaign funds, or giving them to their opponent.
Now, the Republicans are being threaten by tea party/ far right extremist causing them to be primaried. They were happy with the gerrymandering to make their district safe from the opposing party, but now they are constantly fighting with in their own party.

I would not be surprised if Republicans all of a sudden started pushing campaign finance reform, and try to have citizens united overthrown, because it sure isn’t helping them.

You can read the full study for yourself here and see that while it was not a ringing endorsement of the assault weapons ban, as many gun control advocates had hoped, it hardly “proved” the law to be a failure, as LaPierre claims. To the contrary, it found some encouraging signs, like an average 40 percent drop in the number of assault weapons used in crimes (some cities saw a drop of over 70 percent) and some benefit from the ban on high-capacity magazines.

More on that hotel explosion.

SAN DIEGO — An explosion that tore through a Midway-area motel Wednesday appears to have been caused by a couple cooking illegal drugs in one of the rooms, police said.

The blast at the Heritage Inn SeaWorld at 3333 Channel Way originated in Room 225 at about 11:15 a.m. and blasted through the walls into adjoining rooms, investigators said. A man and woman, both in their 20s, in Room 225 were burned, as was a man in another room, they said.

Residents said they saw a man running down the hall in flames.

Ouch.

I think Einstein was just using that saying as a shorthand for describing people he thought were insane. Seeing as he was a scientist (among other things), I’m guessing he pertained it to those in scientific fields who would continue to conduct experiments that had predictable outcomes, but they kept trying to get something else.

We apply it today in that way. For instance, tax cuts. For every conceivable economic problem, the Republicans propose cutting the taxes of wealthy people, when time and time again it’s been proven to not work, and actually makes things worse.
