Aren’t they claiming he was a Vietcong spy or something? Compared to the swiftboaters’ hatchet job on highly decorated vet John Kerry, that would almost be reasonable.
The teabaggers want to build two submarines a year but not provide healthcare, welfare, jobs, food stamps, medication, etc for our citizens. Brilliant.
Imagine the outrage if a Democratic president actually nominated, you know, a Democrat to the position.
Why the fuck do we have to let these fucking clowns run the military. It’s as if they don’t demonstrate day after day that they have no business running anything more complex than a 5c lemonade stand.
In an interview aired Wednesday, former Fox News conspiracy host Glenn Beck seemed to talk National Rifle Association board member Ted Nugent down from staging some kind of armed revolt against the government, urging that the Waco cultists were “really nice guys,” but “you want your day in court.”
It’s amazing really re: Hagel. This guy was once a finalist for George W. Bush’s VP spot I believe and now he’s being treated by his party as if he’s some kind of monster. Fuckers.
On a related note, U.S. Senator from Georgia, Saxby Chambliss, is retiring rather than face a primary challenge from the teabag brigade. You know you’re going off the deepend when Saxby Chambliss is no longer conservative enough. Peak wingnut is still the goal.
Who I wonder would be an acceptable pick for these senators? Obama chooses one of the current undersecretaries and I guarantee you that McCain, Graham, etc would want to turn this into a Benghazi jerk-off.

It’s my understanding that McConnell has some primary opposition too. Indeed, peak wingnut has yet to hit us.

If the hardcore Republicans are being dicks about it, then it’s proof Hagel is a good choice for SecDef.
I’d like to agree with that, but it isn’t at all. Obama could propose John “Kill All Foreigners” Bolton for the position and the Republicans would still oppose him because blackity-black.
Hagel’s a Republican. If you’re still identifying with that party in 2012, you have serious issues. He may be OK on some issues, to be honest I don’t really care. My simple point is that Republican obstructionism is now a useless marker in terms of evaluating the goodness or badness of an Obama decision.

I know the question is rhetorical, but it’s always worthwhile to state this in plain language.
The Republican Party objects to everything Obama does because it’s Obama doing it. They make no attempt to judge things in a rational manner. They are not a functioning political party of adults. They are a cult actively attempting to impede and destroy the very government they ask voters to send them to run. Anyone who votes for them at any level is complicit in this and should be ashamed of either their cluelessness or their willingness to put team before country.

I’m waiting for them to blame Hagel for Benghazi. You know it’s coming.
They’d turn on Bolton the same way they did Hagel simply because it’s an Obama appointee and they want to make whoever the Sec of Defense designee is responsible for Benghazi outside the people you know actually responsible for Benghazi and who the new Sec of Defense will work his ass off to get.
Obama could pick the ghost of Ronald Reagan and this GOP would find reason to complain about Reagan’s handling of Lebanon before and after the barracks bombing and Iran Contra.
But the complaints have more to do with who’s doing the nominating than the nominee even though some of it might be spite because Hagel’s playing ball for the Democrats rather than declining the spot.

+1, would upding again, etc.
This is why it’s so damaging that even now the Dems can’t actually bring themselves to nominate someone sane (i.e., non-Republican) to the position.
While we’ve had some good laughs with the failures of Christine ODonnell, Richard Mourdock, Todd Akin, and several other far-right loonies, the fact is the current U.S. Senate now includes Libertarian Rand Paul, and other wackos like Mike Lee of Utah and that former Club for Growth dude from PA, among many others.
As the culture moves progressively onward on matters of gender and gay rights, the Republican membership in Congress and in statehouses is doubling down on John Bircherism. In fact I’m not sure the John Birch Society could survive in this new far-right rebirth. We seem inevitably headed for a crackup.
At first they demanded Hilary come before their presence. After she smacked them around, they want to go after someone else. Pretty soon they will be demanding the ghost of Lee Aspin.

Toomey who I think will end up being a one termer. He really benefited from the GOP wave in 2010 and 2016 is a presidential election year. Beside the point but yeah it does seem for everyone O’Donnell, Mourdock, Akin, there is osmeone like Lee, Paul, Toomey, and I will add Texas’s Ted Cruz to the list too.
I meant Les Aspin. Late Secretary of Defense from the Clinton years.
You know what was awesome about the Clinton years? We could goof up the name of his Secretary of Defense and not feel bad about it because it wasn’t a household name at or above the level of the damned Vice President.
As Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel will be a living, breathing example that one can be a Republican, in an important position, and NOT be an uncompromising ideologue who is 100% committed to undermining the President. As with Obama’s reelection, this is something that some Republicans will just have to deal with.

I think that’s what bothers them the most about him. He’s a reminder of what many of them once were and some of them never will be.
Wyoming would join a bunch of other states that have been pushing this kind of law despite the Supremacy clause overriding these attempts (which would make this and the others unconstitutional).
Hahaha. Who knows, maybe Texas is in for a Virginia 2008 kind of year. I do think your governor election in 2014 will be where we get a better idea though.

As long as Goodhair gets bounced out on his ass, I’m happy.
Personally, I’d love to see someone like Julian Castro run. I’m pretty sure that was the point of having him keynote the DNC last year. I like him. He’s young, smart, and seems like a genuinely good guy.

Yeah I was real impressed with his speech. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.
Haven’t seen any polls for the governor’s race here in Va this year but I have a feeling if the people of Virginia get to know and realize that Cuccinnelli is a whackjob, they’ll be happy to make him a failed candidate. I mean Bob McDonnell will pretend to be moderate. Kenny will never do it. Of course, the base will love him for that

Castro gives a make-or-break speech, and later OfA sets out to “Turn Texas Blue”. If I didn’t know better, I’d think my Dems have somehow got their shit together.
I loved his DNC speech. Young, energetic, Latino (should help in Texas), just seems like a very positive person. Hopefully that will help him win over the doom-and-gloom world that his opponents are always peddling.
Castro really gave me the same vibe that Obama in 2004 gave me. That this is a young guy with a lot of positivity, genuineness, passion, and pragmatism too. Still amazed with how young he is too. It’s funny to me that he’s closer to me in age than my youngest brother is to me.
Because if the last few years have shown us anything, its how much homosexuals are like jihadis.
/
I must have missed all the gays attacking people who disagree with them. Plenty from Mr. LaBarbera’s side though. Though I won’t compare them to Jihadis because I am not a hyperbolic dipshit like Mr. LaBarbera.

Castro is good, as is Cory Booker. However, both have a bit of an uphill battle due to their relative lack of national exposure. Clinton had - and excelled at - a high-profile position for the past four years. By doing so she succeeded, in my opinion in rebuilding a reputation that was damaged a bit from the prior primary between her and President Obama, and additionally gave her a huge leg up from a foreign relations standpoint.
I doubt either of those guys are going to challenge Hillary or JoeB if either decide to run. They’d both do themselves a favor and run for Senatorial positions (hoping maybe for a cabinet appointment down the road) and then run in 2020/2024. Now if Hill or JoeB don’t run, then it could be anybody’s race.

It’s good to have them in the bullpen, but it’s much too soon. Their competition will be 2nd-term Senators Elizabeth Warren or Al Franken.
President Blackenstein didn’t personally teleport into that bunker and rescue that law-abiding gun owner from the whims of an autistic child! Manchurian Kenyan Communist Usurper!!!!

I dunno. I don’t see Warren or Franken as presidential material. One senator, I like is New York’s Kirsten Gilibrand. She was one of the earliest Democratic senators to come out for gay marriage. She’s fairly young and I think would have wide appeal(she’s from upstate not NYC so, I think she’d be able to do well in more rural and blue collar areas)

If somebody (not me, cause they already know I am Teh Ebil Librul) were to Tweet that to TGDN, it would go viral.

Yeah, agree on those 2. Not sure about Gillibrand. Very little exposure at this point in the game, though I do like her as one of my Senators.

Want to see Franken run in 2024 just to see how the geriatric SNL alumni react.

Yeah, that’s true. Maryland’s Martin O’Malley intrigues me too. He actually did better in his re-election in the Republican wave of 2010 than he did when he was first elected in 2006.
And what is it they expect Obama to do? What do they expect the Feds to do that the local police are not already doing?
They expect Obama to finally recognize that he was voted into office by people who just want free stuff, to realize that he is not worth of running our great, god-fearing nation, and step down along with the rest of his lame excuse for a party.
Holy crap, Wingnuts are blaming the Alabama hostage standoff on…Guess Who
I woke up in the middle of the night a few days ago and stubbed my toe. I’m absolutely convinced President Beelzebub dispatched some of his evil minions to move the furniture while I was sleeping. //
Initial prediction: Another bullied student who found daddy’s gun and decided to stop the bullying once and for all.
The reason we have more school shootings is because we’ve had so many school shootings. It’s not video games that get kids to think about killing other kids.
Sorry, but I think if the Democrats nominate Hillary Clinton in 2016, they’ll be taking a big risk. The risk is totally unnecessary; the Democrats have a great demographic advantage, and should win easily. But Hillary Clinton has been a prominent public figure for over 20 years, and many many voters have made up their minds about her. Personally, I would never vote for her.
I want the Democrats to win in 2016; it’s doubtful the Republicans will have regained their sanity by then. But not with Ms. Clinton. She’s done a fine job as Secretary of State, and she and her husband have made some great contributions, but she has a past, many voters will never vote for her, and there is no need for the Democrats to take the risk.

Funny, I think a lot of people said the same thing about that black guy with a funny middle-eastern name. That seemed to work pretty well IMO.

That’s what I thought in the line to vote in the 2008 primary. I went with the bigger risk.
Why do so many Wingnuts call people who put their words into action “False Flags”? They built that shit, they need to own it.
It’s an odd thing for me. They almost constantly call for violent acts against anyone opposing their twisted ideology — whether it be for religious, racial, or political differences — then when someone takes their rhetoric to heart, it is always a “secret liberal”, a false flag, or a lone wolf. Then, right afterward, start the paranoid claims that THEY are the ones being persecuted.
Hahaha. You know, I like Hillary well enough but I’d like to go with some new blood. Really depends though on how Obama’s administration is perceived in 2015-16. If they’re still considerably above 50%, I say it’s okay to go with someone who has ties to them. Less than 50 though, maybe go with an outsider. I think the Dems have a good stable and farm system though to use a horse racing and baseball analogy.

The point isn’t that Hillary should be the nominee. What makes me happy is that she’s beating all those guys IN TEXAS. This is a deeply red state. If she’s ahead in theoretical polls here now, that’s good news for the Dems in four years if they nominate the right person.

The “secret liberal” is my favorite because you know us liberals, we go about our day planning massacres to making conservatives look bad. I mean I still remember emailing Anders Brevik and telling him to go through with it.//

I really think she means it when she says she is retiring from politics. I think that she’s done with the 3 am phone calls (because let’s face it, the person calling the president is not going to be an anonymous staffer.)
Now I have a suspicion - no, make it an idle fantasy - that the next supreme court seat that opens gets offered to her. She doesn’t have the long-term legal chops, but historically that’s not been a problem.
Well, have to say I’m for HRC at this point. I was all in for Obama in 2008. Donated the max. The campaign made me almost hate HRC a little. But I was a fan of hers before 2008 and her turn as Sec of State has made me one again. I don’t give two sh$ts what the wingnuts or village media want. And I don’t think it will matter to the opposition who we nominate anyway. They will hate him or her with equal vitriolic derp.
People do carry out the violent acts they’re hoping for, but it’s never against who they really want. School children, movie goers, mall shoppers? Please, those are just collateral damage.
Now if some lunatic mowed down a bunch of people at a gay pride parade, or celebrating MLK, or anything to do with PBO? They’d celebrate that.

Martin O’Malley is a secret leprechaun. Mark Warner has big chompers. Joe Biden said fuck once. Hillary sired her daughter with Janet Reno(you’re a real riot 1990’s John McCain)

Richard Hofstadter is still the classic reference:
“As a member of the avant-garde who is capable of perceiving the conspiracy before it is fully obvious to an as yet unaroused public, the paranoid is a militant leader. He does not see social conflict as something to be mediated and compromised, in the manner of the working politician. Since what is at stake is always a conflict between absolute good and absolute evil, what is necessary is not compromise but the will to fight things out to a finish. Since the enemy is thought of as being totally evil and totally unappeasable, he must be totally eliminated—if not from the world, at least from the theatre of operations to which the paranoid directs his attention. This demand for total triumph leads to the formulation of hopelessly unrealistic goals, and since these goals are not even remotely attainable, failure constantly heightens the paranoid’s sense of frustration. Even partial success leaves him with the same feeling of powerlessness with which he began, and this in turn only strengthens his awareness of the vast and terrifying quality of the enemy he opposes.
The enemy is clearly delineated: he is a perfect model of malice, a kind of amoral superman—sinister, ubiquitous, powerful, cruel, sensual, luxury-loving. Unlike the rest of us, the enemy is not caught in the toils of the vast mechanism of history, himself a victim of his past, his desires, his limitations. He wills, indeed he manufactures, the mechanism of history, or tries to deflect the normal course of history in an evil way. He makes crises, starts runs on banks, causes depressions, manufactures disasters, and then enjoys and profits from the misery he has produced.”

She’d be my first choice, the VP my second. Both have exploitable weaknesses, but the TPGOP will be running brothel recruiters by then. Age and health could change the game.

No, Obama had two big advantages: he had no scandals attached to his name (save for some made-up wingnut ones) and he was a likeable kinda fellow, aside from the frothing racists, most people, even those who oppose his politics, found him to be intelligent and affable.
Which meant that the smear campaigns that worked so well on Kerry just backfired on the GOP.

Have to agree with this. Be nice to be rid of some of the political dynasties we’ve had since the 80s floating around. But I think she could handily win, obviously, unless the next 3 years turn to complete shit. Would be nice to break another barrier by electing a woman to the highest office (or hell, at least have a woman as VP). I think that would be important, especially considering how much bullshit women are seeing from the Republican side of things as of late.
My only reservation about HRC (or Joe for that matter) is age. HRC would be 69 in 2017 when she took office, which isn’t old compared to some other presidents (Reagan was about that age or older I think). But I still worry about the demands the office places on its occupants. And Hilary’s been through a lot. But I’m for her anyway. For now.
Last week, House Judiciary Chair Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) introduced the Tax Code Termination Act, which would abolish the entire federal tax code in 2018, with exceptions for Social Security and Medicare taxes — and replace it with, well, nothing. Goodlatte’s bill does offer some vague principles that should guide Congress in enacting a replacement tax system, but it does nothing to actually replace the massive amount of federal revenues it will eliminate.
In addition to cutting off about 60 percent of federal revenues, the bill includes an unconstitutional provision providing that the end of the tax code cannot be delayed except by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress. The Constitution does not permit a past Congress to tie the hands of a future Congress, so this provision making it functionally impossible for future congresses to delay the end of most federal revenue is unconstitutional.
I think the better question I have is who the Republicans will nominate for president and vice president. They seem to be going young with VP while going fairly old for president. Perhaps this time, they nominate someone fairly young but an elder statesman type for VP. I’m not really seeing Rubio as their guy. I’m trying to think of someone who could win two of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina in the early primaries. Someone with big business and so con appeal which I suppose Rubio has because but I think he’ll become unpopular if his opponents make a big hay out of his stances on immigration. I mean we saw what happened to Perry when Perry took a somewhat reasonable stance on immigration. Granted Rubio seems to be smarter than Perry but I just don’t see Rubio being it. Maybe Jindal?

I’ll be honest, this was always a bit of a sticking point for me. I like to pretend that our country is a pure meritocracy. What are the odds that the most suitable candidate in the country just happened to be married to a previous president?
Unfair to Hillary, but my mind has always gone there.

Suitability for the presidency was in their pre-nup, right before the coin-toss.
I’d have to say they’re going to push for a minority-type of candidate. I’m sure the heads of their major organizations will surmise that it might be the only way to win with the changing demographics (unless they somehow manage to rig the elections as they’ve been trying). At least for the VP spot. I highly doubt it’ll be Jindal. He’s just too fucking creepy, like an evil Mr. Magoo.
Who’s that one..is it New Mexico where Susan Martinez is? Not too much national recognition, but I’d watch to see who folks like Fox News etc. start pushing in the next couple of years.

One upding for the comment, one in escrow for ‘evil Mr. Magoo’.
Dominos Pan Pizza is amazingly greasy. Like, seriously, lamp oil greasy.
The mom and pop joints are usually better. There is one local chain I like though. Man do they do a wonderful job with my special pepperoni, feta, and spinach pizza.

With the exception of a physical attack against the President (which I attest to the fact that he has round-the-clock Secret Service protection), each of those has taken place, during the past four years - just not to the level of a Anders Breivik mass-murder event - who not coincidentally has been given near-hero status by several of these same people.

Local places or small chains are almost always better. The big mass-production places always use crap ingredients and way too much oil. It’s like the difference between a McDonald’s hamburger and one from a good restaurant.

Yep pretty much. I’m willing to pay a little more for quality. Not anti eating at chains mind you but I do like mom and pop places better or local businesses.

I’m still not convinced that McDonald’s is actually food. OTOH, one of the small local chains here in town is awesome.

Why not queue a true right-wing freak-out and nominate Michelle Obama?
“The vast majority of illegal aliens are Hispanic, and Hispanics have a higher teen birthrate than any other ethnic group,” Coulter wrote in a Human Events op-ed condeming the Senate’s bipartisan reform plan. “In California, a majority of all Hispanic births are illegitimate. That’s a lot of Democratic voters coming.”

You know why they’re mostly Democratic, Ann? Because they see people like you representing the Republican party on issues that matter to them and they think rightfully “Fuck that party.” But hey enjoy being a minority. Maybe you’ll actually learn to empathize with other people for once instead of being a psychotic nutjob.

Yeah because there were no shootings in school before Obama. No sir, it’s just a false flag by Obama to get your guns. Give me a fucking break, asshole.

This is pretty much a staple of such paranoid ramblings. Once a Dem is elected, suddenly the other side claims gov agencies are “stockpiling” weapons and FEMA trailers. But the govt is of course hopelessly incompetent as well so all this should turn to naught. //
Personally, I would be delighted if Hillary Clinton were appointed to the Supreme Court. But I think running for President is an entirely different category. No doubt many Republicans, and many Texans :) would be happy with Ms. Clinton as the nominee. It may or may not be fair, but after 20 years in the public eye, she is a unique and polarizing figure. I fervently rooted for Obama in the 2008 primaries, and I would fervently root for anyone-but-Hillary in the 2016 primaries.
They are not about to do anything to get these people to vote GOP, just srite them off for not being Republican enough to begin with.
It’s funny how quickly they changed their tune. I always used to hear “these people should be voting Republican. They’re hard-working, believe in God, and believe in family.” In a very short time, that’s changed to “fuck’em, they won’t vote for us anyway.”
In celebration of his confirmation, Chuck Hagel and President Obama will pray together at the mosque, followed by the ritual chant of “Allahu Akbar, Death to America and Death to Israel.”

Everyone is yelling about 2nd amendment remedies, yelling about a new revolution, saying that people that disagree with you are no better than Hitler (who should have been killed before he could come to power). All the while gun nuts are stockpiling weapons and ammunition. Then we have school shootings, movie theater shootings, shootings at outdoor political events, coincidence?

Nah, fuck her. Sometimes a bad example is what people need to see things correctly. Let he fling her feces.

n an effort to show how weak our food-stamp programs are, 26 members of Congress have decided to reduce their grocery budgets to $4.50 per day, the going rate for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Accordingly, the feat has been named the "SNAP Challenge," and is essentially a way for these 26 Democratic representatives to publicize how poor the availability of ...
As a child, I didn't understand most of the midnight phone calls to my mom, or the times women would come over with children in tow, sometimes even in pajamas, and I would be told to go entertain them while Mama ensconced herself in her bedroom with their mother. Once, my mom spotted a bruised woman with three children holding a cardboard sign in ...

The key to winning the Latino vote is rejecting immigration reform, conservative pundit Ann Coulter said Tuesday. "We can't win them if we keep ...
As a reformed wingnut, I recall those times. There's a whole fringe camp out there full of folks just like Bill Ayers who are upset with our President for not being the far left revolutionary that they really want him to be. These hard bitten partisans are willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with the hard right right whenever the opportunity presents to fling ...

"It's striking how preoccupied Harris and VandeHei are with the perception that Politico is too 'insidery,'" Silver wrote. "My personal critique of their work cuts a little deeper than that, however. It's not that they are too 'insidery' per se, but that the perceptions of Beltway insiders, which Politico echoes and embraces, are not always very insightful or accurate. In other words, the conventional ...
Linda Harvey Likens Gay Acceptance among Youth to Believing the Sun Revolves the Earth Mission America’s Linda Harvey yesterday attacked the College Republican National Committee for acknowledging that the GOP’s anti-gay stances were alienating young voters, who overwhelmingly support gay rights, and asking the party to “welcome healthy debate on the policy topic at hand.” She compared such a move to a science teacher ...
