Catholic Diocese Boots Anti-Muslim Demagogue Robert Spencer

Nobody with a brain wants Spencer affiliations anymore
Wingnuts • Views: 29,604

Add this to the increasing marginalization of radical anti-Muslim views: A Catholic diocese in Massachusetts today rescinded its invitation to Robert Spencer, a prominent anti-Muslim writer and activist, to speak about Islam at an upcoming conference.

“Although the intention of the conference organizers was to have a presenter on Islam from a Catholic’s perspective, we are asking Robert Spencer to not come to the Worcester Catholic Men’s Conference, given that his presence is being seen as harmful to Catholic-Islamic relations both locally and nationally,” diocesan spokesman Raymond Delisle said in a statement to the Boston Globe.

Spencer had been invited to speak at the March conference, organized by the church in Worcester, sparking outrage from local Muslim groups. After an outcry, the diocese rescinded the invitation.

Spencer, whom the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism has called “the godfather of the anti-Muslim movement in this country,” has made a career out of writing books and giving lectures on the dangers of Islam. He, along with close collaborator Pam Geller, helped lead the opposition to the Park51 Islamic community center in Manhattan and has been behind dozens of other controversies. More darkly, Norwegian anti-Muslim mass shooter Anders Breivik cited Spencer’s writings 50 times, though Spencer has called the shooter “insane” and refuted any association.

The response from Spencer and Geller was predictable: Blame the media. Writing at FrontPage, Spencer claimed that he was “informed” that the Boston Globe’s reporter, Lisa Wangsness, “instigated the entire controversy” and that she “asked [Muslim groups] to call the diocese and demand the cancellation.” Spencer published his entire, lengthy email exchange with Wangsness, including her phone number and email address, along with a correspondence with Wangsness’ editor. They declined to comment in an email to Salon.

Good news is always appreciated.

Glad to see he was “uninvited”. Of course, now according to Spencer and Geller, this means the Catholic Church is in cahoots with the “Stealth Jihad!!”

Can’t imagine why they would have invited him anyway. Surely they must know what he represents. There must be better informed Roman Catholics to discuss Islam.

They invited him in the first place? Mmk.

given that his presence is being seen as harmful to Catholic-Islamic relations both locally and nationally

So they invited a guy they had to know was a crazy anti-Islam bigot, and decided to redact the invite only after the Muslim community went apeshit? I think I’d take their worries about “harmful to Catholic-Islamic relations” way more seriously if they didn’t invite that piece of shit in the first place.

Perkins: Child Abuse ‘Can Only Get Worse’ if Boy Scouts Include Gays

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council once again warned that incidents of child abuse will rise if the Boy Scouts end their national prohibition on gay members. Yesterday on his radio show, Perkins said that people are gay as “the result of abuse” and “trauma” in their life. “With an open door policy,” Perkins said, child abuse “can only get worse. So that could lead to these experiences and trauma for young boys that could lead them into that lifestyle.”

Remember the set of moral equivalencies that earned Rick Santorum his less-than-savory sobriquet: To these guys, homosexuality, bestiality, pedophilia and wife-beating are all morally equivalent becaue they are all an abomination unto the Lord.

To allow one is to open the door to allowing all the others, and to practice one is to demonstrate a moral depravity that is as good as practicing all the others.

[…]

Spencer, a Catholic, runs blogs and has written books that some consider anti-Muslim.

[…]

Spencer in emails to The Boston Globe ([Link: b.globe.com…] ) said there is ‘‘nothing hateful or bigoted’’ about his views, and called the diocese’s decision to pull his invitation ‘‘evidence of the cowardice of Roman Catholic officials.’’

Spencer is not a Roman Catholic. This is his brand: Melkite Greek Catholic Church. I guess he considers himself less cowardly.

You’re talking about Greek Orthodox. That differs from Greek Catholics which are Eastern Rite Catholics. Sorry to nitpick but wanted to clarify that Greek Catholic and Greek Orthodox are two different things. Not discounting your family experience in the slightest. To further expand on that, the biggest difference between Greek Catholics and Roman Catholics from what I understand is they allow priests to marry, cross themselves the opposite way, and they don’t celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.

It’s a numbers game ultimately. Catholics seem to be all over the place. I’ve met some who I can legitimately say were to my left and others who were really right wing. I know it’s like that in others but man it seems like the Catholics really exemplify that. Not too often you have the same faith produce two poles like Teddy Kennedy and Rick Santorum. Alan Keyes is also Catholic. I remember one of the families in the neighborhood I grew up in who thought he would make a swell president.

The Christian closet-case talking about gay sex again. He has a one-track mind, doesn’t he?

Fischer: Gay Boy Scouts Will Create ‘Sexual Tension’ on Camping Trips

How is it that Fischer’s made it thus far without the inevitable airport restroom/carrying his bags/inappropriate twitter messaging story?

He’s a pent-up tsunami of repressed same-sex lust waiting to be released!

Surprises me too. Even if he’s not sexually repressed, he does have other issues that are common knowledge. Frankly, I’m sick of him slandering my gay friends as pedophiles and sex fiends when he obviously doesn’t know or want to understand that not every gay person is the fucking same. And of course he calls Jerry Sandusky gay even though there’s nothing that supports that all and even if true wouldn’t mean a damn thing.

re: #55 HappyWarrior

It’s a numbers game ultimately. Catholics seem to be all over the place. I’ve met some who I can legitimately say were to my left and others who were really right wing. I know it’s like that in others but man it seems like the Catholics really exemplify that. Not too often you have the same faith produce two poles like Teddy Kennedy and Rick Santorum. Alan Keyes is also Catholic. I remember one of the families in the neighborhood I grew up in who thought he would make a swell president.

My Mom’s older brother is on the right-wing end. He sent Christmas cards with a family photo (10 kids) and one year it somehow specified that they were Roman Catholic. Both my parents rolled their eyes. (We only had 7 kids in our family.)

Again, Fisher and Tony Perkins spend more time thinking about gay sex than gay people do. So does that Peter LaBarbera dude that goes to all the gay bars and pride parades to “report” on the debauchery.

Those closets are so full of skeletons bones just fall out without even opening the door. Someone needs to check their basements for bodies or prisoners.

First thing that comes to mind? Jerry Sandusky. He was doing what he did for decades, but he had people covering for him. Wouldn’t doubt Fischer has a bunch of people that would cover for him. And let’s face it, religious folks never seemed to have much of a problem with it.

Do you ever watch Louie CK’s show? Only recently got into it but Louie and his friends were playing poker. Among them was a gay comic and he joked that he probably talks about gay sex more with Louie and his straight friends than he does his gay friends. Really, having had gay friends, I can attest that they’re just as boring as the rest of us.

I’d say “thug” rather than “clown” because I believe in applying a bad person’s worst characteristic as a label when letting people know what they are. Thug overrides clown.

Plus clown makes him sound rather harmless, which he isn’t.

Yeah but molestation is different from covert gay sex. I remember reading when the Ted Haggard story broke that the guy he was having the affair with didn’t know he was famous until he saw Haggard became a very public famous of gay marriage opposition.

Hmm, and he knows this because…? NO, perish the thought, he NEVER felt such tension while on camping trips!

I have worked with, have family who are, and friends who are. They’re no different than anybody else. They love, hate, laugh, bleed, work, do stupid shit, and die like the rest of us. Just like every-other human being.

I like the name for the Simpsons denomation. They’re members of the Presbo-Lutheran Methodist church. Hell even though I identify as agnostic, I still call myself Irish Catholic because Irish Catholic is as much a cultural identity as it is religious one.

I’m Irish and was raised Catholic too. We should have a fist-fight.

It does give you a VERY different perspective on life when you’re a self-loathing homosexual due to religious indoctrination.

Yep. But if you listen to Fischer and those like him, you’d think there’s a secret gay conspiracy to force kids to be gay, molest kids, subvert Christianity, etc. Totally think Fischer has some skeleton in his closet. Whether that’s a gay lover, closeted gay relative, or some really weird sexual kinks, I don’t know but his mindset about human sexuality is not the one of a healthy, well-adjusted grown man.

Speaking of bigots, I just went off on a young woman at a dollar store, of all places. I got to the checkout to hear the woman in a discussion with checkout clerks in both open stations. I don’t know what item she wanted, but they were out and she wanted to know when they would get more. They both said it was something they usually stocked, but right now they’re out and had no way of knowing exactly when more would come in, but they get frequent deliveries. The young woman kept insisting on apparently a different answer, over and over again. She got really indignant and haughty as hell, accusing the clerks of having an attitude (I thought they were both amazingly patient), demanding to see their supervisor, on and on. It became obvious that she was being a bully just for the sake of bullying people who couldn’t fight back, since her question had been repeatedly and very clearly addressed with the only available answer.

I finally said to the young (white) woman: “Honey, are you stupid or just desperate for attention? They have answered your question several times now,” which was met by snickers and nods by others in line. She shot back “mind your own business!” to which I responded that it was my business because she was wasting my time and everyone else’s and that her bullying of the clerks was not acceptable behavior. She finally paid for her items while lecturing the (black) clerks about their bad attitudes(!) and how they should be fired, when her daughter (about 8 or 9 years old) rolled her eyes and said “No stereotypes, right?” and the women said with a sneer, “No stereotypes, right.”

I was seething, saying “And a bigot to boot, teaching your child to be just as hateful.” She glared at me and started to open her mouth to say something but then looked around to see at this point about 5 of us ready to take her on in the manner in which she was treating the store clerks but without their need for constraint. She wisely shut up and stomped out with a loud hrumph.

What the hell motivates people to behave so badly?

For one thing, she didn’t expect you to be there, so she assumed she’d get away with it.

re: #94 allegro

It’s ego, sense of self. They don’t really think very much of themselves, won’t accept that fact and aren’t willing to work at changing even if they did. So they work very hard at cutting other people down.

If you can’t make yourself feel better, make every one else feel worse is their motto.
