Jim Hoft Flat Out Lies About Panetta and “Waterboarding,” Gets a Drudge Link

The Dumbest Man on the Internet resorts to a flat out lie today, and is rewarded with a headline link at Drudge Report: Defense Secretary Panetta Admits Information From Waterboarding Led US to Bin Laden (Video) | the Gateway Pundit.

Yes, waterboarding worked.
Today on Meet the Press Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta admitted that information gleaned from waterboarded detainees was used to track down al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and kill him.

“The real story was that in order to put the puzzle of intelligence together that led us to Bin Laden, there were a lot of pieces out there that were a part of that puzzle. Yes, some of it came from some of the tactics that were used at that time, interrogation tactics that were used. But the fact is we put together most of that intelligence without having to resort to that.

Jim Hoft is such an amazing dimwit that he actually includes the quote that exposes his own brazen lies.

First, Panetta did not even use the word “waterboarding,” and he certainly did not say that information from waterboarding “led to bin Laden.” Hoft simply made that up out of nothing. Panetta specifically said that most of the intelligence that led to bin Laden was put together without using torture.

Second, Panetta’s very next sentence, directly following the section that Hoft clipped for his misleading video, was:

I think we could have gotten bin Laden without that.

This is an absolutely blatant, in your face example of how the right wing blogs tell each other lies, circulate them, and turn them into unquestionable articles of faith. It’s a microcosm of the reality-denying reactionary sickness at the heart of the conservative movement.

Here’s the clip from NBC of Panetta’s actual statement, including the critical sentence that Hoft edited out.

Jim, when you’re going to claim in your article that Person A said Thing X, you should probably not include Person A’s quote saying Thing Not X.

Just a friendly journalism tip, because I care.

And that, right there might be why Zero Dark Thirty got the stink eye from the Oscar voters. The very idea that torture helped is both beyond completely unproven, and anathema to us all. So many want to buy in that waterboarding helped. Just to wrongly assuage the conscience.

Does Mr. Hoft ever tell the truth? How influential is Hoft on the Republican Party? Republican politicians seem to always seek out Limbaugh’s approval (see Rubio’s recent appearance on his show to discuss immigration reform), but I’ve not heard much about Mr. Hoft in the mainstream press.

Yes. If it wasn’t for “enhanced interrogation” we would have never known that OBL was hanging out in the open in Abbottabad, Pakistan, 0.8 miles away from Pakistan’s “West Point.” //

5 jaunte  Sun, Feb 3, 2013 10:56:10am

Chuck Todd would improve as a journalist if he wasn’t so enamored of his own voice, and could let Panetta answer the question without interrupting after the first sentence.

Absolutely shameless

Yet this will seep into the ether of the rightwing just as Charles pointed out. The same way that the “Liberty Tower” lie is ALWAYS brought up to defend Americans torturing their captives, this too will begin to be brought up every time torture is mentioned.

Unfortunately, Hoft is actually quite influential. His fake outrages often make it onto Fox News, although they rarely credit him. And this lying post of his is currently the big headline at Drudge Report.

Yes, Jim Hoft is a pretty good representative of the Republican Party. This is where they’re at.

People like Hoft think differently.

As an example, I’ve listened to right-wing talk shows where the host has quote mined a statement from someone on the left, and when confronted about the context have asked “Did she say those words?”. When you answer “yes” they smile, nod and say “see?”

I’ll give Chris Wallace this: he basically just called LaPierre a liar for saying that the Obama girls’ school has armed security. Wallace said his own children went there and there was never armed security then and no armed security now. He looked at LaPierre and said that he and all the others ( like his own network??!! LOL) know it is not true.

A few years ago I was arguing with our local talk show host about AGW and the use of the word consensus as used by scientists. I was arguing that consensus was used to mean ‘majority’, he was arguing that scientists were using the word to mean ‘all’. After he cut me off he pulled up six online dictionaries, five of which had his as their #1 definition. In his mind, the fact that the majority of dictionaries had his definition as #1 meant he was right. How the scientists used the word, or what they meant by it meant nothing.

Deftly ignoring the fact that, even if this is a fiendish conspiracy by the Obama administration, the facts on the ground are indistinguishable from a single shooter killing multiple trained, alert, armed elite special forces types, thereby making it laughable to claim that possession of a firearm by “good guys” confers magical invincibility against attack by armed “bad guys”.

Scientific consensus is the collective judgment, position, and opinion of the community of scientists in a particular field of study. Consensus implies general agreement, though not necessarily unanimity. Scientific consensus is not by itself a scientific argument, and it is not part of the scientific method. Nevertheless, consensus may be based on both scientific arguments and the scientific method.

They obviously want to use their guns, and settle scores as they see them, but they haven’t quite whipped themselves into enough of a frenzy. As it is, the administration has to walk on eggshells in proposing gun legislation, merely proposing it, lest they incite millions of delusional freaks to come out shooting. One spark may set them off. In the current climate of lies and paranoia, a bungled law enforcement effort like Waco could do it, as could some kind of insane act by someone nominally on our side. Gun control advocates are not by nature violent, of course, but it only takes one unhinged individual among millions.

re: #29 William Barnett-Lewis

It’s unclear right now. The Israeli health minsitry put out an order that no Ethiopian women are to be given depo-provera without being fully informed and were in no way to be pressured to take it. Some are saying this is an admission that this did occur, others say that this was just to calm fears and backfired.

Meanwhile, a number of Ethopian Jewish women have said they were pressured or tricked into talking it.

The usage of depo-provera by Ethiopian Jews is far, far higher than for average Jews, to the extent that while being about 1-2% of the population they’re accounting for >50% of the depo-provera use in the country.

The argument has been made that this is explained by cultural reasons— the ethiopian women wanting to hide the contraception from their husbands. I haven’t seen any actual support for this argument.

So the biggest thing that needs explaining is what’s up with this enormously high depo-provera rate among Ethiopian Jews in Israel, and the individual women’s stories of being tricked or pressured.

Nothing definitive has been shown yet.

Buck mainly stays out of the main threads. And anyway, I don’t think I could have been fairer. The only facts are the women’s stories, the order from the health ministry to not do this, and the depo-provera use. I’m personally unconvinced by the cultural argument because I doubt that, if the motive is ‘hide contraception from your husbands’, that Ethopian Jews are the only ethnic group in Israel who have motive to do that, if they even do have motive to do that.

There’s also the possibility of the depo-provera usage statistic being wrong, of course.

In general, you’re not going to find unbiased, good articles ending with stuff like this, Killgore:

When it comes to pointing a big, white Western finger at Israel and accusing it of carrying out the kind crimes of racism and colonialism that the rest of us grew out of years ago – a favoured pastime of so many liberal campaigners today – it seems facts count for little.

I can’t explain it, there’s just something about the place. But for me it was the redwoods that brought such peace, the forest floor seems to soak up all outside sounds and the trees have this “thing” I can’t explain but I want to have my ashes scattered there when I die. Sigh.

We’re supposed to go to Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia this summer for another 10 days. Depends on the kiddo’s school and finding reliable people to take care of the house and critters while we’re gone.

Buck’s freakout about the Depo-Provera story actually caused me to look into the Israeli Educational TV reporter who broke the story, and I discovered that she’s a reputable left-leaning journalist. The original story the way she reported it seems to be quite true - some Ethiopian women did say they were given the contraceptive without their knowledge.

Some sources took this bit of info and exaggerated it into “forced sterilization,” which it wasn’t. From what I’ve been able to dig up, it looks like a small-scale mistake — a serious mistake, but definitely not some vast racist conspiracy to sterilize immigrants.

Hmm, didn’t know that. We went up the coast from San Francisco to Crescent City and then drove all over the place to as many old growth forests as we could find. Spent one day at Crater Lake in Oregon, but the rest of the time driving and hiking and driving some more. I could live there.

If you get the chance, read The Wild Trees by Richard Preston. It’s about the redwoods and the scientists who study them, one of the few books I could actually get my husband to read (that’s not action/adventure fiction). He was so taken by the book that he planned that trip and surprised us with it.

85 Glenn Beck's Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut  Sun, Feb 3, 2013 12:50:41pm

re: #77 Charles Johnson

It could be a lot of things. It could have been just one doctor’s office, one clinic that they set up in Ethiopia. It could even be ‘left-wing’ doctors aggressively pushing depo-provera on Ethiopian women by making the same assumption as Buck, that their husbands pressure them into having kids or would otherwise react negatively to them being on birth control. It’s unlikely to have been a systematic thing where the immigration officials sat down and said “Now how can we keep those durn Beta Israel from reproducing so much, because as Jews, we’re all about stopping people, especially other Jews, from reproducing”.

I don’t want to just discount the women’s stories, and the statistic— which is sourced back, in the stories I’ve read, to the Israeli reporter citing a government report, so if she is reputable it’s unlikely to be that wrong— of depo-provera use being so much higher is worrying, but it’s not that worrying, since depo isn’t that common a choice among women anyway. So it is possible there’s something about Ethiopian Jews and depo-provera that’s a big match, but the ‘because they want to hide it from their husbands’ comes from a claim by a doctor, and that weirds me out because the story only broke because the women were talking about it, so if they wanted to hide it from their husbands then contacting a reporter is a rather odd way to go about it.

‘Bump fire’ devices turn rifles into machine guns: How is that legal?

A defense of assault-style rifles like the AR-15 used in the Sandy Hook massacre is that they’re basically just semi-automatic rifles with cosmetic improvements. In other words, each bullet needs an individual trigger pull in order to explode out of the barrel. Actual spray-trigger machine guns, after all, have been illegal on the civilian market since 1986.

But debate around so-called “bump fire” devices that “simulate” automatic fire by utilizing a rifle’s recoil to shoot the next bullet have caused some to wonder whether the devices could inspire a bureaucratic reclassification of assault weapons into machine guns, which in turn could lead to a de facto ban without Congress getting involved. That question may be politically sharper now, especially since an all-out assaults weapon ban, according to University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato, is “dead in the water.”

“If the ATF wants to now come and ban [bump fire devices], they basically have to modify the definition of a machine gun,” Jeremy Cottle, an Iraq War veteran and inventor of the Slide Fire stock, told the Guns America blog.

I may personally have a huge problem with Buck, but he does have a grain of salt in that this story has turned into a far more sinister story. It’s what I call the Holocaust Paradox. The Holocaust Paradox is that even though Jews were one of the chief victims of the Holocaust, nowadays if Jews do anything even slightly reminiscent of the Holocaust in any way (which is a very broad category— the Nazis were excessive, not that inventive) it’s judged far more harshly than if other countries do it. In other words, that being the victims of the Holocaust placed a moral obligation on Jews to be better than other people.

So because this story has a vague overtone of eugenics, it reminds people of the Holocaust, and so it makes people go “Jews acting like Nazis!” It’s a cliche, it’s Manichean, I don’t know what it is, but it blows.

There’s an ugly nuance to it: antisemites see the Jews as “using the Holocaust” to “escape blame” for the evil they are purportedly still wreaking on the Gentile world.

If there were irregularities, they should be investigated and corrected. End of story.

Flustered LaPierre

Next will come the charge that LaPierre was “AMBUSHED!!1”. Unlike most wingnut charges, this will strike a chord with some nonwingnuts who hear it, as Chris Wallace’s father was known for ‘ambush reporting’.

But I saw the footage and the question was no ambush: It was simply Chris Wallace using his knowledge and ability to argue to smack down a brain-dead talking point. He treated LaPierre fairly, and gave the man plenty of time to make his case. But when LaPierre could not do so, Wallace was not afraid to say that LaPierre had failed and to explain why.

All in all, a tough but fair interview.

Well, that’s what I thought of with the explanation of depo use being higher among Ethiopian Jews because they were hiding it from their husbands. If that’s the explanation, then there are some ‘ultra-orthodox’ groups where one could assume that you’d want to hide any contraception use from your husband. Or parents.

I am having trouble finding any statement by the Israeli government actually either saying it didn’t happen or that it did happen. I’m not treating the “Don’t do this, whatever you do” memo as an admission that it occurred.

Satellite dishes are like traditional Chinese compasses in that way.

And in fact in Red Dawn Mi-24 Hinds are eventually brought in against the Wolverines. These are depicted as original Hind-A/B models with a standard cockpit, rather the definite two man stepped cockpit of the Hind D, because the filmmakers could not produce a flyable mockup of the Hind D and wanted the depicted units in the film to look like what Soviet vehicles and helicopters looked like in real life.

When the Hinds show up, the Wolverines try to fight them but are put to flight with the loss of one of their own. Though one of the Hinds is crippled, it is not seen exploding or crashing and thus was presumably able to make an emergency landing.

Yeah, someone posted this in a thread earlier this week; I don’t know if you did it or someone else.

Fascinating, yet heartbreaking as well.

Marlin Wins.

Fishermen battling a massive black marlin off the coast of Panama took a turn for the worse when the fighting fish appeared to sink their boat.

Seen in a shocking sequence of photos capturing the event on Thursday, the boat teeters toward the hooked marlin splashing above the waves before gradually capsizing and vanishing in the deep.

As both astonishing and affirming as the pictures appear, that this single marlin surely out took an entire boat and its crew, the boat’s alleged manufacturer close to those involved explains otherwise.

It was allegedly a captain’s error that submerged the ship following a rogue wave that knocked him off balance, the source wrote with Marlin Magazine’s photo of the incident on their Facebook wall.

The manufacturer was quick to defend the ship’s strength and performance writing that the boat has previously captured ‘hundreds of Marlin without issue or concern.

Flawless Victory.

Ah, the warm weather must be nice.

Just kidding. My winter is likely a little longer than yours. Snow doesn’t usually start disappearing until late March around here, although there have been years lately where the snow is partially gone by that time.

At least one of the smarter ones of that crowd considers this family an example of what not to do, knowing that long term survival does ultimately mean trading with others.

It’s only when dealing with sharks humans and orcas that a marlin is the lesser. Against smaller fish, it feeds by speeding into a school of them, cutting them with its sword, and then eating those it has wounded and killed.

Yep. I’m probably a bit north of Amory Blaine and snow lasts through March.

I have a solid 1-1.5 inches of ice under packed snow in the driveway(after last week’s melt/snow/deep freeze/snow). When the melt finally comes it’s going to be one big puddle.

Feline Overlords took a spin out in the hall. L.C. was on the far side of the building when the elevator pinged indicating an arrival. He timed his scramble for the apartment just right to almost trip the person coming out of the elevator. Must be some instinctive timing thing.

No injuries, just startled them as a black cat streaked by in a totally unexpected spot. Hope they aren’t superstitious either.

Thank you! The missouri river is running along the horizon and I think it reflects back the sunlight. I used to live in an old house with big windows on a bluff by the river. The sunsets would fill the upstairs rooms with blood orange colors. Kind of made up for the ghetto neighborhood.
I miss that house. A brick two story New York townhouse style, turn of the century.

I stole that photo off a friend’s facebook picture album. He took it from his loft. Anyway, when I swiped it from the Facebook album page, it looks like it spreads out further, lengthwise in the avatar!

I just found out from a friend (who didn’t know that I know the victim) that a waitress at the Denny’s I eat at regularly was brutally murdered. She was a friendly, pretty baby-faced girl.

She seems to have chosen her friends very poorly due to her own background, as they look like they’d do exactly what they did.

There’s already a racist in the comments using these scumbags to disparage the DREAM act.
