Dick Morris: Obama won because of Hurricane Sandy
The conservative pundit had repeatedly claimed that Romney was going to achieve an overwhelming victory over Obama. Morris confidently predicted that Romney would win by 325 electoral votes. On election day, however, Romney lost with only 206 electoral votes.
Morgan noted that Obama “cleaned Romney’s clock” and doubted Hurricane Sandy was completely responsible.
“Well, I prefer to believe that CNN’s polling was accurate, wouldn’t you?” Morris shot back.
Morgan responded that polls should be taken with “a grain of salt.” He noted that Nate Silver of the New York Times, who analyzed the polls, corrected predicted the outcome of the election.
Morris, changing the subject, said Obama won because of a “fundamental demographic shift” in the United States.

Thing about it is that Morris broke the cardinal rule, he got high on his own supply. By the time Election Night had rolled around, he’d gotten himself so convinced that a Romney landslide was assured that he would not entertain the idea that he could be wrong. He still refuses to acknowledge that he was ever wrong. If he stands up tomorrow and says he was wrong about predicting a Romney landslide, he’ll be admitting that he’s not a very good bullshit artist.

It’s not just Americans of course - all people are like this.
The modern world with its modern ideas - genetics being an excellent example - requires something of us who live in the modern world. Yet many don’t want to spend the time and struggle (and quantitative learning often involves struggle) with the hill to climb to reach the point where “understanding” is achieved, at least to an extent where one can start to make valuable judgements that can add to knowledge, either one’s own or for someone else.
This is one reason why I’m rather pessimistic these days - we just aren’t able as animals to learn enough and learn fast enough to keep up with the boundaries we are pushing. If we’re going to progress I suspect we’re going to have to re-engineer our genome to give us a longer life, better memories, and increased abstract thinking capabilities.

2-yes, I talked about this with my doctor. He said we just have to carve an area out of it all and do what we can with it—while keeping a general and current finger on the rest of things.
Which is all well and good. I think I can do that and remain functional in the years left to me. What I think will be interesting is how we are going to do this and remain a democratic society. It seems will will have to fragment somehow to trust those who can do math to do math and those who can think globally to do so, and so on.
I don’t see that happening while not treading on individual civil rights. The allure of power and wealth is too great and as we discussed previously, we are flawed beings (although not necessarily born sinful ;)
I fear more and more religious enclaves like we saw with the LDS in Texas. People who wall themselves from the world.

Ever managed to block both lanes of the Autobahn during morning commute? They had to drag the tank out of the road, as well as it’s busted track, to a place where the road side was wide enough to repair both tracks and do it while lots of German commuters are whizzing by at full speed and angry with even the slightest delay. Oh and this was during Reforger too.

The government our Founders created didn’t allow women or minorities the vote. It didn’t allow for the direct election of Senators, or presidential term limits, or set clearly defined rules about Presidential succession. We had to fix those things over time.

Greets and saluts from the soon to be socked with snow NYC metro area. Folks to the north and east are gonna get hammered with blizzard conditions as the storm tracks firm up and it looks like New England will be in for one of the heaviest snows seen in the last couple of years. Around these parts, the concern is coastal flooding and further erosion along areas badly affected by Sandy and the nor’easter that followed.
For most of the NYC metro area, it looks like 6-10 inches is expected. Much higher amounts expected into Connecticut and Massachusetts.
It’s winter, so these storms are expected. What’s not expected is the fact that we’ve had below normal precipitation and the only thing keeping water levels anywhere approaching normal are severe weather events - getting a whole bunch of rain or snow in short bursts. That’s not exactly normal.
As if that wasn’t enough, but January ended with the third highest tornado tally since 1950 as a result of the January 29-30 outbreak across the southeast. The three highest tallies have all been since 1999 (1999, 2008, and 2013).

If at first you can’t secede, you can at least create your own currency.
In the latest lunacy among states which are losing faith in the union—or at least, the leadership of the union—Virginia is considering having its own metallic currency. The Virginia House of Delegates has passed a bill calling for a study (which would cost Virginia taxpayers more than $17,000) to assess the value of a state-issued coin. Several other states are considering similar plans. The idea is that Americans can’t trust the Fed to operate monetary policy, and that the vaunted U.S. dollar might one day become worthless.
I need to move out of this state.

The history of the United States dollar covers more than 200 years.
Early History The history of the dollar in North America pre-dates American independence.[1] It began with the issuance of early American currency called the colonial scrip. Even before the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress had authorized the issuance of dollar denominated coins and currency, since the term ‘dollar’ was in common usage referring to Spanish colonial eight-real coin or Spanish dollar. Though several monetary systems were proposed for the early republic, the dollar was approved by Congress in a largely symbolic resolution on August 8, 1785. After passage of the Constitution was secured, the government turned its attention to monetary issues again in the early 1790s under the leadership of Alexander Hamilton, the secretary of the treasury at the time. Congress acted on Hamilton’s recommendations in the Coinage Act of 1792, which established the dollar as the basic unit of account for the United States. The word dollar is derived from Low Saxon cognate of the High German Thaler, an abbreviation of Joachimsthaler – (coin) from Joachimsthal (St. Joachim’s Valley, now Jáchymov, Bohemia, then part of the Holy Roman Empire, now part of the Czech Republic; for further history of the name, see dollar.) – so called because it was minted from 1519 onwards using silver extracted from a mine which had opened in 1516 near Joachimstal, a town in the Ore Mountains of northwestern Bohemia.
Because gold and silver in the open marketplace vary independently, the production of coins of full intrinsic worth under any ratio will nearly always result in the melting of either all silver coins or all gold coins. In the early 19th century, gold rose in relation to silver, resulting in the removal from commerce of nearly all gold coins, and their subsequent melting. Therefore, in 1834, the 15:1 ratio of silver to gold was changed to a 16:1 ratio by reducing the weight of the nation’s gold coinage. This created a new U.S. dollar that was backed by 1.50 g (23.22 grains) of gold. However, the previous dollar had been represented by 1.60 g (24.75 grains) of gold. The result of this revaluation, which was the first devaluation of the U.S. dollar, was that the value in gold of the dollar was reduced by 6%. Moreover, for a time, both gold and silver coins were useful in commerce.
In 1853, the weights of U.S. silver coins (except, interestingly, the dollar itself, which was rarely used) were reduced. This had the effect of placing the nation effectively (although not officially) on the gold standard. The retained weight in the dollar coin was a nod to bimetallism, although it had the effect of further driving the silver dollar coin from commerce. Foreign coins, including the Spanish dollar, were also widely used[2] as legal tender until 1857.
With the enactment of the National Banking Act of 1863, during the American Civil War and its later versions that taxed states’ bonds and currency out of existence, the dollar became the sole currency of the United States and remains so today.

Early American currency went through several stages of development in the colonial and post-Revolutionary history of the United States. Because few coins were minted in the thirteen colonies that became the United States in 1776, foreign coins like the Spanish dollar were widely circulated. Colonial governments sometimes issued paper money to facilitate economic activity. The British Parliament passed Currency Acts in 1751, 1764, and 1773 that regulated colonial paper money.
During the American Revolution, the colonies became independent states; freed from British monetary regulations, they issued paper money to pay for military expenses. The Continental Congress also issued paper money during the Revolution, known as Continental currency, to fund the war effort. Both state and Continental currency depreciated rapidly, becoming practically worthless by the end of the war.
To address these and other problems, the United States Constitution, ratified in 1788, denied individual states the right to coin and print money. The First Bank of the United States, chartered in 1791, and the Coinage Act of 1792, began the era of a national American currency.

Well, no. The government our Founders created still had slavery. There are clauses in original text of the Constitution about the extradition of escaped slaves. It took a war to fix that.

“Significant jail time is now definitely a part of the deal,” the source said.

Since so many of the founders were Federalists, they’d be okay with a strong central government.
They’d be amazed at the military prowess of the country, and the vast industrial capacity that came into existence as well as the technological sophistication now in place.
Seeing how the nation was a social experiment in a new form of governance, I’d say that they’d be happy that we’re still around more than 230 years later.

It was not until the 1860’s that feds standardized all currency. Before that, any bank could issue its own scrip.
Well, not really.
OK, prior to the 1860s US federal currency was coin. Paper was for notes - promissory notes, basically. And banks could (and do) issue such, notionally backed by their reserves. Note that banks had to be approved if not partially owned by states - a loophole that some states made into through-ways.
But the notes weren’t scrip - at least not nominally.

Updated: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took on a former White House doctor Wednesday who said he was at risk of dying in office because of his weight, calling her a “hack” and telling her to “shut up” unless she examines him.
Dr. Connie Mariano, who was President Clinton’s doctor in the White House, went on CNN and said, “I’m worried about this man dying in office” after Christie confronted his own weight issue head-on at a press conference Tuesday.
“I find it fascinating that a doctor in Arizona who has never met me, never examined me, never reviewed my medical history or records, knows nothing about my family history, could make a diagnosis from 2400 miles away,” the traditionally tough-talking governor said. “She must be a genius. She should probably be the surgeon general of the United States, I suspect, because she must be a genius.”
Christie, who has not ruled out a 2016 presidential bid, also said his children watched the CNN segment, and his 12-year-old son asked him, “Dad, are you going to die?”
“This is just another hack who wants five minutes on TV,” Christie said. “And it’s completely irresponsible, completely irresponsible … and people who have a medical license, who have the privilege of having a medical license, should in my view conduct themselves more responsibly than that. If she wants to get on a plane and come here to New Jersey and asks me if she wants to examine me and review my medical history, I’ll have a conversation with her about that. Until that time she should shut up.”

Large and powerful standing armies are discussed frequently. The risks and dangers of such are described, and the certainty that those risks and dangers are likely lead every one of the writers to condemn the thought of a large and powerful standing military in the US.
And what’s somewhat frightening is that they were right. Many of the things they dreaded are here.
Thing is, I’m not sure what sort of nation we’d have, if any, if we hadn’t formed that military. The ACW was the last “militia” type army, and even then it was larger than the founders intended. Possibly WWI and certainly WWII would have been quite different had we not been involved.
But they wrote against a large standing military, and many of their fears turn out to be valid.

I just emailed the chinese company I bought my chinese android tablet from to ask for a replacement. Apparently you can’t do that by chat or on the phone.

I think they’ll do it, I gave them a tutorial on how to root the thing, which is one service they sell (even though they couldn’t figure out how to do mine).
These things are an odd mixture of super advanced technology and cheap shit.
The camera on the back of mine is fake, doesn’t have the resolution it claims and is really poor quality. The battery in it was defective or fake. The thing was so cheap that the charge connector came broken and it has a bad connection internally, sometimes you have to shake it for the screen to work.
But the screen is much higher quality than a laptop screen, can be seen from any angle. It has a great keyboard dock that you can set it on (unusual for a tablet). Like all tablets, it’s great at playing movies…

Heh, even though some people say it costs more in electricity to make a bitcoin than the coin is worth (even using advanced GPUs to generate them), I remember one guy who said he makes a profit:
1) he lives in Quebec where electricity is cheap and used to heat homes in the winter
2) so the electricity his gpus use just turn into cheap heat he’d need anyway
3) he said he’s saving about $300 per year on heating by getting it back in bitcoins.

(The UK also did so to a degree - a relatively small professional force that was a cadre for home defense and could be a frontier and expeditionary force. And in both cases a fairly large professional navy was in existence since sea power was the key to national security in any case.)
The US Civil War was also a militia war due to the scope of the contest in relation to the previous military needs of the country.

Yeah, it’s a mess. Two were shot by police in Torrance in mistaken identity cases:
…when police came across vehicles similar to the one sought by authorities in a massive manhunt for an ex-LAPD officer suspected of shooting three other officers.
Neither incident actually involved the suspect, said Torrance police Lt. Devin Chase. The suspect, Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, was at large Thursday morning.
The first Torrance incident occurred about 5:20 a.m. in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue in Torrance, Chase said. That incident involved Los Angeles police detectives from the Hollywood division, sources said.
Two people were struck by gunfire and transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries, Chase said. No officers were injured.
The second incident, which involved Torrance police, occurred at Flagler Lane and Beryl Street about 5:45 a.m. No injuries were reported in that incident.
Chase said both incidents involved vehicles matching the description of the one sought in connection with Dorner.
“Now it appears neither of them are directly related,” Chase said. “In both of them, officers believed they were at the time.”
It was not immediately clear if occupants of the vehicles matched Dorner’s description, Chase said.
One really has to wonder what the police were thinking when they opened fire in both of these instances without having a good id on the people in the vehicles. Vehicle stops are the most dangerous part of any cop’s job. I don’t envy them when they’re dealing with an ex-cop who apparently is going and targeting cops in revenge for being fired from the position. It means that they’re going to be on a hair-trigger because the next guy pulled over in a vehicle matching that description might open fire on them first. That’s unbelievably stressful, but it doesn’t mean that the cops can just open fire on anyone in a vehicle matching the description.

I’m a little sensitive to the issue, as I’ve got family members who are in the Christie zone. Shit, I need to shed about 40 lbs. myself.
I know how hard it is to lose weight. I don’t want to come off like it’s as easy as eating a salad and drinking water for 10 days.
But despite his protestations, the guy wants to be POTUS. It’s an issue. He’s most likely in danger of having some kind of coronary, given his weight and age.
I also find it a little amusing that so many of the people who are villifying the First Lady for promoting a healthy life style are often pushing for Christie to run for POTUS.

Yeah, this is true. One difference from the Schiavo case, though, is that you had a cardiologist (Sen. Frist) trying to diagnose a brain injury through video.

I’m down 12 lbs since I got laid off Dec 4th. First job interview went really well and I thought I had it, but they called last Friday to say they went with another candidate and it’s back to the drawing board. I did have another phone screen this week and according to the recruiter I should have a face to face next week. Cool company. I’ll share details if it moves forward.
But back to the weight thing…cut one drink a night out and have been exercising pretty much every day. Feels really good and I’m hoping to drop another 10lbs before the end of spring.

How the heck did he get his hands on a SA-7? That’s a surface to air missile, which if he has, puts those LAPD choppers trying to track him down in serious danger.
There are specifically named officers in his manifesto. They’ve got additional security, but this guy seems determined to go out with a blaze of glory. He’s targeting those he claims responsible for his firing. A couple murdered last week were related to one of the officers implicated by Dorner in his firing.

William Taft (27th President) was the largest one so far, over 330 pounds. He also is the only person to hold office for both POTUS and Chief Justice of the United States. I can’t find anything saying his weight affected his job performance.

Ah, the models. GFS has refined that model significantly since it was posted. The current model is boosting the totals in the immediate NYC metro area, but no where near the levels in the other model. The HPC model (precip only) shows significant precip over New England, and that the NYC metro area is on the shoulder of the major storm.
This seems to be the latest estimation for snow totals in the NYC metro. The early AM NWS forecast still has NYC metro for 6-10 inches. Should be updated this afternoon. If the tracks firm up the way they have, they might increase the storm totals, especially on Long Island. The snow totals will depend on the temps, and it seems that it will stay colder than first expected, meaning that the changeover to rain might not happen, or wont be for as long as those early models suggested.

One LAPD officer was grazed in the Corona area, law enforcement sources said. Then sometime later, two Riverside Police Department officers were shot in Riverside. This situation is pretty depressing: black LAPD cop accuses LAPD cop of excessive force, gets fired, loses all appeals, levying charges of racism and antisemitism, goes on fine-tuned rampage, and is on the run being chased by an LAPD whose tendency towards violence is well-known and whose short fuse regarding minorities is legend.
I sure hope otherwise, but it doesn’t look like this will be anything but ugly. I fervently wish it ends with as little collateral damage as possible, and my thoughts are with his victims’ families.

GOP Lawmakers In Iowa Introduce Bill To Define Abortion As Murder
Nine Republicans in the Iowa state House of Representatives on Wednesday put forward a bill that would define abortion as murder, the Ames Tribune reported.
The legislation would change the definition of someone involved in a murder case to “an individual human being, without regard to age of development, from the moment of conception, when a zygote is formed, until natural death.”
State Rep. Rob Bacon (R), one of the legislators to introduce the bill, said that the bill is an effort to “protect the life of the unborn” but conceded that it has no chance of becoming law.
“There’s still some of us that believe life begins at conception,” Bacon told the Tribune.

Here’s the manifesto. I don’t think you can claim any such thing.
Nothing about it that I can see. It’s really just a matter of him going the full vigilante. He’s taken every slight against him and what he believes in as a reason to just take life without any due process. He seems like more of a blaze-of-glory type which is even worse.
Hopefully he has a change of heart and stops what he’s doing, or kills himself before causing more harm; an “oh god what have I done” moment. Hopefully it’ll draw attention to the corruption he obviously was a victim of. Doesn’t justify what he’s done in any way.

By the way, I found a piece of data that may help to explain the Ethopian-Jews-Depo-Provera thing:
The usage of all forms of contraception among Israelis in general is 68%. The usage right now among Ethiopian Jews in Israel is 30%. In the camps, it was reported at 5%, for Ethiopia in general it was 17%. So even after this ‘eugenics’ program, Ethiopians have a much lower usage of contraception than average Israelis. In general, it would be considered a good thing to promote contraception usage in that population.
I think that what’s likely to have happened is that there was a directive to increase contraception usage among Ethiopian Jews, and that this was done unethically, without full informed consent, by doctors with not unusual doctor’s arrogance combined with a culture clash and a ‘we’re doing it for their own good anyhow’. There are certainly tinges of racism and paternalism, but it’s very different from the “Israel is trying to sterilize all the Ethiopians” meme.

Ex-LAPD cop tried to steal boat, flee to Mexico, authorities say
The disgruntled ex-LAPD officer suspected of shooting three police officers Thursday morning and killing a couple in Irvine earlier this week tried to steal a boat in San Diego and flee to Mexico, authorities said.
Police officials said they believed Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, attempted to steal a 47-foot boat from an elderly man about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Southwestern Yacht Club in Point Loma, hours before the police shootings in Riverside.
The 81-year-old boat owner reported being accosted and tied up by a burly man dressed in black who threatened him with a gun and said he wanted the boat to flee to Mexico.
But while the assailant was trying to start the boat, a rope became fouled in the propeller and the boat was inoperable, authorities said.
The suspect took the boat owner’s cell phone and fled the scene and the boat owner was unharmed.
About 2 a.m., a citizen reported finding property belonging to Dorner on a street near Lindbergh Field, not far from the scene of the attempted boat theft. The property included a briefcase and Dorner’s LAPD badge.

What I was thinking. Seems like he had a good grasp of the political landscape, some well-thought out analysis of people, and then poof! it all went to shit.
I see his grievances, I see his motive, but I don’t see anything resembling justification for what he’s done. This isn’t eye-for-an-eye. Like a lot of folks who just “snap”, they just don’t have the mental capacity to deal with internal conflict that doesn’t end with other people dieing (which is weird here because this guy seemed like he had his shit in a pile).

Some things are covered, some aren’t.
I think I”m going to have to move her soon to assisted living, but one-step-at-a-time.
After going thru it all with my Dad two years ago, I think I’ve used my life-time allotment of adrenaline.

We were lucky enough to find an amazing home nurse for my grandmother, allowing her to stay in her house up until the last couple of weeks of her life. This made her last years much, much, much happier than they would have been otherwise.
And this was my mean gramma too. That nurse was a saint. She often said “I like Eleanor, I wish Eleanor liked me.”

I don’t have any complaints other than the paperwork. Since moving my parents to Illinois, everything has been so much easier. It seems the whole network up her is designed to work —not so much in Ohio. That’s my experience anyway.
My Dad got much better care up here. They just HATE spending their own money. I ask “Why did you save and save and save?” That’s what the money is for—no? Not that there is much left as they lived longer than they thought they might, but there is enough to make sure she get’s what she needs.

I think one of these arguments started because I said that someone in the news seemed literally “retarded” (I even argued that in detail) and I was told that using that word, ever, was no longer acceptable.
That was an attempt to control me by taking a word out of my vocabulary. Not through convincing and argument but through disapproval, then insult ie. direct control. The assumption was that “no” could not be taken as an answer. That I have no freedom at all in the matter, it was decided for me.

I think one of these arguments started because I said that someone in the news seemed literally “retarded” (I even argued that in detail) and I was told that using that word, ever, was no longer acceptable.
That was an attempt to control me by taking a word out of my vocabulary. Not through convincing and argument but through disapproval, then insult ie. direct control. The assumption was that “no” could not be taken as an answer. That I have no freedom at all in the matter, it was decided for me.
You don’t call that an attempt at control? Of course it’s the demand for control.
Why do you assume it’s an attempt to control YOU?

My original question still stands. It’s a question, not a request that you change your behavior. I’m asking you what you get out of acting in this manner. I completely accept there may be some benefit, either to you or society, or what have you. I’m just wondering what you think the benefit of being this abrasive is, why you do it.

In the present day, there’s not a lot to choose between them— Islam currently has a lot more violent and dangerous radicals, but Christians, specifically Christians in the US, are following policies that are literally dooming human civilization, and directly using religion to defend their actions. I don’t have any illusions that if the religions of the countries of the West and the Middle East were reversed that the Christian Middle East wouldn’t use Christianity to justify terrorism.

As for the history of one being worse than the other, you DO realize that Islam started out with the genocide in Medina, and with Mohammad killing his critics and killing and enslaving their families. That’s not the history of the religion, that’s the example of the prophet at the root of the religion. You’ll note the lack of Jews around Medina, despite the fact that it was a Jewish city. Who do you think killed the Jews over that whole area, way back then?
We just had a genocide in Bangladesh in the 70s, one that no one is apologizing for. We had another in Turkey/Armenia, one where yet again, if you criticize that genocide in Turkey, you’ll be arrested. I suspect that centuries back there was a massive genocide around India that people don’t want to talk about because the result of talking would be more violence, not contrition.

Meanwhile, the center of intellectual activity in Christianity gets sacked, and most of the major kingdoms destroyed in a gigantic invasion. After that, Christianity gets neo-colonized a lot and the Muslim world, after hundreds of years of bloody war in Europe, culminates in WWII, and in the aftermath, nuclear deterrence holds a fragile peace over Europe. etc. etc.

I’m less happy with the toothless rebellion in Egypt where the secular, non-regime citizens came out into the streets but never gained any power.
Tunisia was an improvement, though oppression of the Jews who live there is part and parcel of the new regime.
Saudi Arabia sits on a sea of oppressed Shiites the way Iraq did.
I’m not sure how this all contradicts my problem with the religion. I hope for the best, but for instance don’t believe that peace with Israel is possible, and don’t believe that Jews and non-ruling-elite Muslim sects will ever be treated as human in most Middle Eastern countries

So the difference between the Middle East and Europe can better be explained by the history of the Enlightenment— which still didn’t stop radical Christians from enacting the Holocaust— and the political history of the post-WWII period than it can some ginned up fundamental difference in the religions based on a stupid idea that Muslims have to take the Koran ‘literally’— an idea that’s shown to be facile from the sheer existence of the disparate branches of the Muslim faith.

Well in the current situation almost everyone in the Middle east plays the same game that Mahathir Mohamad did.
Iran courts popularity/acceptance among Sunnis by emphasizing their Jew hatred. The Syrian regime tried the same trick. Hezbollah does the same.
I’ve seen the same in Jordan and Lebanon. Only the Kurds are exempt.
The situation is that hatred of a scapegoat is the only glue that holds the societies in a whole region together. And sectarian violence and oppression between everyone else is the major factor driving all politics, in all decisions. And there is a lack of concept that there is a common humanity.
Whatever the history, that’s the current situation.
It may not get better. It could even deteriorate.

How is the goal of reducing the power/influence of radical Islamists (which is a goal I agree with) advanced by broad-brushing Islam/religion as the essential root of the problem?
