Keith Jarrett - Danny Boy (Londonderry Air)

Incredible harmonies
Music • Views: 23,374

Many people know this song as “Danny Boy,” but those are just the most popular lyrics for this old Irish tune called “Londonderry Air.” And Keith Jarrett’s solo version of it is definitely one of the most beautiful ever recorded. The internal harmonies he improvises around the melody here are really stunning; especially from about the 4:00 point. Just amazing stuff.

If you read the linked story in the tweet I posted, you’ll see the armed homeowner’s actions contain multiple levels of fail. If he insisted on confronting the prowler (as opposed to, say, calling 911 and leaving it at that), why the heck didn’t he just point the gun at the guy from a distance? Instead, we get:

Witnesses told police the victim saw a man he didn’t know in his friend’s backyard and went outside to confront him. They fought and the victim was stabbed. Police say the victim’s gun went off during the struggle, but it isn’t clear who fired it.

Isn’t the whole point of using a gun for self-defense purposes to avoid close combat with someone stronger than you? o_O

I went through Dawson City when I was a kid in 1974 when we took our pick up to Alaska and spent a month winding our way around and back down to California…place was freakin’ wild. Muddy streets, drunken Indians pounding Labatts on the steps of the government liquor store…police driving big 3/4 ton Ford pickups just loading the passed out guys into the back to take them to jail to sleep it off. Had to take a ferry across the Yukon River…that was pretty sketchy itself. Looks like it’s turned into a tourist spot these days.

Because in addition to making you more statistically prone to deadly accidents, having that gun makes far too many people think they have super powers because they have a magic weapon. And so they’re less safe because they get into situations that they can’t handle, because they believe guns endow them with self-defence and freedom.

When I was a teenager, my family and a batch of cousins (cousins on both sides come in batches of six to ten) went to a pizza place with an old church organ. One of the cousins was Danny, and his dad requested ‘Danny Boy’. The organist told us he doesn’t play that anymore because it’s too sad after the death of a friend’s son named Danny. But they begged, and he did it anyway. That was sad.

Virginia Foxx Invokes The Holocaust In Debate Over For-Profit College Regulations

In remarks to the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities Tuesday, a Republican Congresswoman used a Holocaust reference to suggest that private college leaders should have stood up to the Obama administration’s regulation of for-profit colleges.

In criticizing the private college presidents, Representative Virginia Foxx, the North Carolina Republican who leads the subcommittee on higher education, adapted the famous statement from the German theologian Martin Niemöller on Germans who ignored Nazi persecution. (“First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a communist.”)

” ‘They came for the for-profits, and I didn’t speak up…’ ” Foxx said. “Nobody really spoke up like they should have.”

This is second order stuff that’s going to be very difficult to ever get a grasp on. How many confrontations end without the police being notified at all, how many without the police writing down the involvement of a firearm. When I was being prepped as a witness by the prosecutor of the guy who assaulted that woman in Seattle he didn’t know I’d waved a rifle out the window to stop the attack, because the police left that out of their report in order to prevent someone from second guessing their discretion. The prosecutor didn’t care either, he was just surprised when I mentioned my account of what happened.

It’d be nice if this discussion could be had without gun owners characterized as largely made up of irresponsible idiots who think firearms provide super powers, especially after an elections where we were repeatedly told that gun grabbing wasn’t on the menu. How much of a big deal did we make about Scott Walker not running on an anti-union platform then turning around and busting unions with a passion. Now I see bills being readied in California that would ban expanding bullets, the only kind legal for the hunting of big game like deer.

Anyway, if it seems like this kind of thing is happening a lot it’s because the nature of internet media means most every incident is being spoon fed to the masses, and they’re slavering it up. If I worked in marketing for the oil companies, nothing could make me happier than this bumping global warming and attendant consequences off the front page again and again.

Great, the guy should have kept his distance, yes obviously, but the underlying message is that people shouldn’t have the right to be armed on their or with permission their friends property. Like it or not these are constitutional rights under discussion, ones that have been ruled by the Supremes to enumerate an individual right. If that’s a problem for people, then they should work to get the Constitution changed, that is assuming one thinks it matters.

re: #56 goddamnedfrank

We talked about this a lot at IDPA. The idea of the sport was the artificial pressure of one kind or another was key to gun owners being effective when the necessity arises. The sporting pressure, the fact of shooting on the move and against the clock. That is the real deal.

The nightmare scenario was the people that buy a gun, train once and put it away. That is the home of the bulk of accidents for the obvious reasons. That has got to be better regulated somehow.

The best scenario is a regular sporting shooter, and ideally someone who would actually compete regularly with a similar firearm, maybe the very same one. Compete in the practical/defensive sport of choice.

Since the rare stories I heard about our sporting folks getting into any gunfights were anecdotal I’ll skip it. Most of them were police shoots anyway. We had a sizable police contingent. I’ll just share one assertion just because it came from a SWAT team training leader. He said our sport made his new team trainees much better, and he ran them there at ISI frequently in addition to the regular training.

Like kickboxing or karate it’s all a ton of work and time to get competent. It’s a huge commitment.

The movie ended with the song.

Well, I’m feeling kinda mystic now. Or just a little “in tune”

Next: Viva Zapata: Marlon Brando directed by Elia Kazan. The screenplay was written by John Steinbeck.

Really, this is when I think my do nothing weekend pays off.

Somehow, you saying that made me think of this:

We’d have far better/more gun statistics if the damn gun advocates would stop opposing said research.
;)

True, apart from some pretty good data already. The first hard part is just understanding even very low numbers are unacceptably high. The gun accident rate is down 80 or 90% in a few decades. But still of course tragic and has to come down more.

What to take away from the data is the hard part.

Did you see the Wired article Paged on looking at violence from a epidemic / contagion point of view? I thought that was great stuff.

I’m starting to see support for psycho ex-cop/fugitive bubbling up around the internet.

Are you going to claim that Daily Kos supports Dorner’s actions because they reported part of his manifesto?

Wait, what?

I wasn’t aware Somalia had something other than a civilian population. WTF.

Somalia’s Transitional government does have soldiers and police, but they are problematic at best.

Destro would like them, though, since they tend to rape female refugees, thinking orphaned teenage girls and young widows ‘fair game’ for their amusement.

In addition to the Newtown truthers, there are also some online who insist that Adam Lanza was a Jew and this was all part of some Jewish conspiracy. That, just like any support for this fugitive cop found online, is apropos of exactly nothing.

Yep, if there’s one thing the ‘net doesn’t have a shortage of, it’s confirmation bias.

Viva Zapata is not catching me. Yet. I was too busy watching Kai.

What he said in the beginning that they made into a song. He should get rich, cause it brings tears to me eyes.

Is your new avatar your own artwork?

No (I wish). It’s from a book of Indian designs. I have a bunch of those kinds of books. I scan the b&w artwork in Photoshop, tweak/clean it, convert it into line art in Illustrator, add color, and then save/export it for use wherever I like.

It can be time consuming for complex motifs (the flower was pretty quick & easy), but it beats the hell out of hand tracing photos with Illustrator’s pen tool, which can take forever. I don’t really mind though as it’s kinda therapeutic and you eventually end up with a nice library of images.

No, I’m going to claim that the majority of kos kidz seem to think he is a hero who was framed and will be assassinated to cover up the crimes of the police state
Did Chris Dorner Get a Raw Deal From The LAPD? Read the Court’s Opinion In His Disciplinary Appeal
Currently 84% of the moonbats think he’s a truth telling hero.
Also on the front page of Reddit
I’m just going to say it: Shooting at those ladies in that truck makes me suspect that the LA police wan’t to silence Chris Dorner for sone reason or another.
If they kill him he’s going to be a martyr.

The majority, eh? I see that 67 people voted in the poll you linked to, which doesn’t say “he’s a hero who was framed and will be assassinated,” but rather says that he “got a raw deal.”

Pretty much every comment on the poll you linked to says something to the effect of “whether or not he got a raw deal, killing people is horrible.”

I don’t know whether you’re lying again, or if you really have such blinders on that you can’t read for comprehension any more.

Even though it’s disgustingly misrepresented? See Shvaughn’s comment above, and read the linked dKos piece for yourself. 68 votes (at the time I just looked at it) out of a site membership in the 100s of thousands does not a “majority of kos kidz” make. This is why KT fails, and why we can no longer take anything he says seriously. Sad, really. It never had to come to this.

I will admit it’s a nice change from the Bradley Manning hero worship but if this conspiracy theory catches on it’s going to provide a lot of ammunition for the wingnuts. Carry on and make excuses anyways though. Good luck with that.

Here’s the responses on Dkos. Tell me where exactly you see a conspiracy theory that provides ammunition for the wingnuts.

I have no problem saying, (24+ / 0-)
“Yes,” he did get a bum deal. However, I hope it’s obvious that it’s no excuse for murder. My sincere hope is that he’s caught, tried, and if found guilty, imprisoned for a very long time.

It’s Very Troubling That He’s That Rational (7+ / 0-)
and plausible in his complaints and yet his response is multiple killing including of total innocents. One reason I want him taken alive is that he gets a thorough emotional and mental evaluation.

Threatening to kill people (6+ / 0-)
not involved in law enforcement but merely related to them, kind of makes any arguement about police brutality and racism moot, imo.

Perhaps he did get a raw deal (1+ / 0-)
I don’t know.

I do know for an absolute certainty that the three people he killed and their mourning survivors got an irreversibly raw deal.

There is no one who suggested that “he is a hero who was framed and will be assassinated to cover up the crimes of the police state”, let alone the majority of people at Dkos.

You are lying again, Trout. Why do you think we’re stupid enough to believe you?

re: #113 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

Or they can wait for a Supreme Court decision to overturn the previous one significantly, which is likely.

The established legal test going as far back as the Miller decision from 1939 states “And further, that ordinarily when called for service these men were expected to appear bearing arms supplied by themselves and of the kind in common use at the time.”

With literally dozens of domestic makers of civilian AR-15 and variant semi autos running overtime and unable to meet domestic demand, and the platform being one of the most manufactured and purchased in history, it’s going to be difficult for any court to rule against the in common use clause without deliberately ignoring the available data.

Nice edit on that first comment which is the highest rated on the thread. Here’s the part you chose not to include…

Likewise, I can see no justification for the LAPD to perform what, to all appearances, was a “hit” the other morning that turned out to do nothing other than injure two innocent people. Just as Dorner should be caught and brought to justice, so too should the elements of the LAPD who were aiming to simply assassinate him be held to account.

Where does that say that he’s a hero?

Do you believe that the police should be held accountable for randomly firing on innocent civilians or not? Cuz that’s not about Dorner’s heroic character, but rather about the actions of the cops.

You said “Currently 84% of the moonbats think he’s a truth telling hero.” — except that wasn’t what the poll was about. The responses on Dkos indicate they they think he may be a truth telling villain, not a hero.

No one you linked to at Dkos held him up as a hero. You are lying again.

There’s also the “George Zimmerman was a Jew” crowd. We should introduce them to the “Lanza was a Jew” people! Maybe they can leverage their synergy. (For the record, both his parents are solidly Christian. While there are a few Jews with the last name Zimmerman, most are not: like Ethel Zimerman who you know as Ethel Merman, or pianist Krystian Zimmerman, etc. Interstingly “Martin” is a Jewish Name among people from Spain. See [Link: en.wikipedia.org…] But nobody said Trayvon Martin was Jewish.
