Many people know this song as “Danny Boy,” but those are just the most popular lyrics for this old Irish tune called “Londonderry Air.” And Keith Jarrett’s solo version of it is definitely one of the most beautiful ever recorded. The internal harmonies he improvises around the melody here are really stunning; especially from about the 4:00 point. Just amazing stuff.

If he insisted on confronting the prowler (as opposed to, say, calling 911 and leaving it at that), why the heck didn’t he just point the gun at the guy from a distance? Instead, we get:
Witnesses told police the victim saw a man he didn’t know in his friend’s backyard and went outside to confront him. They fought and the victim was stabbed. Police say the victim’s gun went off during the struggle, but it isn’t clear who fired it.
Isn’t the whole point of using a gun for self-defense purposes to avoid close combat with someone stronger than you? o_O

I went through Dawson City when I was a kid in 1974 when we took our pick up to Alaska and spent a month winding our way around and back down to California…place was freakin’ wild. Muddy streets, drunken Indians pounding Labatts on the steps of the government liquor store…police driving big 3/4 ton Ford pickups just loading the passed out guys into the back to take them to jail to sleep it off. Had to take a ferry across the Yukon River…that was pretty sketchy itself. Looks like it’s turned into a tourist spot these days.

When I was a teenager, my family and a batch of cousins (cousins on both sides come in batches of six to ten) went to a pizza place with an old church organ. One of the cousins was Danny, and his dad requested ‘Danny Boy’. The organist told us he doesn’t play that anymore because it’s too sad after the death of a friend’s son named Danny. But they begged, and he did it anyway. That was sad.

This is second order stuff that’s going to be very difficult to ever get a grasp on. How many confrontations end without the police being notified at all, how many without the police writing down the involvement of a firearm. When I was being prepped as a witness by the prosecutor of the guy who assaulted that woman in Seattle he didn’t know I’d waved a rifle out the window to stop the attack, because the police left that out of their report in order to prevent someone from second guessing their discretion. The prosecutor didn’t care either, he was just surprised when I mentioned my account of what happened.
It’d be nice if this discussion could be had without gun owners characterized as largely made up of irresponsible idiots who think firearms provide super powers, especially after an elections where we were repeatedly told that gun grabbing wasn’t on the menu. How much of a big deal did we make about Scott Walker not running on an anti-union platform then turning around and busting unions with a passion. Now I see bills being readied in California that would ban expanding bullets, the only kind legal for the hunting of big game like deer.
Anyway, if it seems like this kind of thing is happening a lot it’s because the nature of internet media means most every incident is being spoon fed to the masses, and they’re slavering it up. If I worked in marketing for the oil companies, nothing could make me happier than this bumping global warming and attendant consequences off the front page again and again.
Great, the guy should have kept his distance, yes obviously, but the underlying message is that people shouldn’t have the right to be armed on their or with permission their friends property. Like it or not these are constitutional rights under discussion, ones that have been ruled by the Supremes to enumerate an individual right. If that’s a problem for people, then they should work to get the Constitution changed, that is assuming one thinks it matters.

We talked about this a lot at IDPA. The idea of the sport was the artificial pressure of one kind or another was key to gun owners being effective when the necessity arises. The sporting pressure, the fact of shooting on the move and against the clock. That is the real deal.
The nightmare scenario was the people that buy a gun, train once and put it away. That is the home of the bulk of accidents for the obvious reasons. That has got to be better regulated somehow.
The best scenario is a regular sporting shooter, and ideally someone who would actually compete regularly with a similar firearm, maybe the very same one. Compete in the practical/defensive sport of choice.
Since the rare stories I heard about our sporting folks getting into any gunfights were anecdotal I’ll skip it. Most of them were police shoots anyway. We had a sizable police contingent. I’ll just share one assertion just because it came from a SWAT team training leader. He said our sport made his new team trainees much better, and he ran them there at ISI frequently in addition to the regular training.
Like kickboxing or karate it’s all a ton of work and time to get competent. It’s a huge commitment.

True, apart from some pretty good data already. The first hard part is just understanding even very low numbers are unacceptably high. The gun accident rate is down 80 or 90% in a few decades. But still of course tragic and has to come down more.
What to take away from the data is the hard part.
Did you see the Wired article Paged on looking at violence from a epidemic / contagion point of view? I thought that was great stuff.

No (I wish). It’s from a book of Indian designs. I have a bunch of those kinds of books. I scan the b&w artwork in Photoshop, tweak/clean it, convert it into line art in Illustrator, add color, and then save/export it for use wherever I like.
It can be time consuming for complex motifs (the flower was pretty quick & easy), but it beats the hell out of hand tracing photos with Illustrator’s pen tool, which can take forever. I don’t really mind though as it’s kinda therapeutic and you eventually end up with a nice library of images.

The majority, eh? I see that 67 people voted in the poll you linked to, which doesn’t say “he’s a hero who was framed and will be assassinated,” but rather says that he “got a raw deal.”
Pretty much every comment on the poll you linked to says something to the effect of “whether or not he got a raw deal, killing people is horrible.”

The established legal test going as far back as the Miller decision from 1939 states “And further, that ordinarily when called for service these men were expected to appear bearing arms supplied by themselves and of the kind in common use at the time.”
With literally dozens of domestic makers of civilian AR-15 and variant semi autos running overtime and unable to meet domestic demand, and the platform being one of the most manufactured and purchased in history, it’s going to be difficult for any court to rule against the in common use clause without deliberately ignoring the available data.

Likewise, I can see no justification for the LAPD to perform what, to all appearances, was a “hit” the other morning that turned out to do nothing other than injure two innocent people. Just as Dorner should be caught and brought to justice, so too should the elements of the LAPD who were aiming to simply assassinate him be held to account.

Do you believe that the police should be held accountable for randomly firing on innocent civilians or not? Cuz that’s not about Dorner’s heroic character, but rather about the actions of the cops.
