The LAPD just announced that they’re going to reopen Dorner’s case.

That’s what I predicted. Some of what Dorner wrote in his whacked out manifesto sounded like it could very well be true, and the bureaucracy is now leaping into action.

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) — The hunt in the snowy mountains for a former Los Angeles police officer suspected in three killings continued Saturday as police announced they will reopen the disciplinary proceedings that led to the fugitive’s firing.

Officials will particularly re-examine Christopher Dorner’s allegations that his law enforcement career was undone by racist colleagues, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck told KCBS-TV. He also urged Dorner to surrender.

“If he was to give himself up, we’d be happy to hear what he has to say,” Beck said.

The most chilling, godawful thing about the Dorner case so far is that threatening people’s children appears to have been an effective strategy. One man has put the entire LAPD and other regional agencies into an abject panic. They’re shooting up innocent people in trucks, you can’t find motorcycle cops anymore, they put them all in cars. One man, and he’s got them, on a systemic institutional / organizational level, absolutely terrified.

You and Trout are both free to link to examples of moonbats hero-worshiping Dorner. I’ll happily criticize them for it — I’ve already posted in a thread here about being horrified by the pro-Dorner facebook pages.

But to try to make this about “wingnuts vs moonbats” is pointless. Nobody sane supports what this guy is doing, regardless of their political views.

The Koch brothers are supervillians. Dorner is just a case study in why giving cops private purchase rights unavailable to civilians is a bad idea. All equipment should be provided by and taken back by the agencies that employ cops. There’s no reason to give them enhanced rights like Feinstein’s bill does, exempt their private purchases from compliance with the law, allow retired cops to hold onto toys that civilians can’t otherwise possess. In my opinion this kind of worship of power is antithetical to a properly functioning democracy.

That’s what I predicted. Some of what Dorner wrote in his whacked out manifesto sounded like it could very well be true, and the bureaucracy is now leaping into action.

The problem now with this bizarro-Serpico scenario is that any of Dorner’s allegations that institutional racism and bigotry in the LAPD ultimately cost him his job is going to be tempered by his terrorist, murderous actions against his former colleagues and their families. That’s not only going to give those with a vested interest in sweeping those allegations under the rug reason the shoot the messenger (as it were), they’re gonna blow the messenger up with a cement truck full of ANFO and say that Dorner’s accusations have little/no credibility.

My prediction is that Dorner won’t be taken alive; either by his own hand or by the cops pursuing him, he’ll likely end up on a slab, because, at this point, he’s got nothing else to lose.

LAPDs culture of corruption still needs reform (3+ / 0-)

You are correct that none of his grievances can ever justify, either morally or legally, his killing spree. The question I raise is whether the LAPD has a culture of corruption that drives principled officers from its ranks. Whatever insanity was unleashed by the loss of his reputation and career, at one point Dorner was a principled, socially conscious LAPD officer; an rare entity in very short supply.

“Decision Before Dawn” (1951) which was on earlier on TCM included a flight of P-47s making an attack on a troop column including one of the movie characters. Also older US equipment such as M-46 and M-26 tanks doubling for German equipment as well as samples of actual German WW2 equipment - usually AT or AA guns. Also appears to have been shot in Germany given the bombed out ruins shown. (Takes place around Mannheim, so possibly filmed there I guess.)

Steven Seagal joins Arpaio’s ‘posse’ for training on school shootings

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s volunteer “posse” had a special guest on Saturday, as actor and reality show “Lawman” Steven Seagal joined in as it tackled training scenarios in the event of a school shooting.

KPNX-TV reported that members of the group conducted their training at a shuttered elementary school, with students volunteering to play the roles of victims to further simulate conditions of an attack like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut last December. Arpaio had already been deploying some of his volunteers to patrol schools around Maricopa County.

“Remember: Aggressiveness,” one trainer said while preparing for an exercise. “We have to find the threat and end it. That’s the only goal of any kind of active shooter training.”

40 goddamnedfrank  Sat, Feb 9, 2013 7:10:21pm

How was Dorner allowed to purchase silencers I hear you not asking:

12501. Section 12520 shall not apply to, or affect, any of the following:
(a) The sale to, purchase by, or possession of silencers by agencies listed in Section 830.1, or the military or naval forces of this state or of the United States for use in the discharge of their official duties.
(b) The possession of silencers by regular, salaried, full-time peace officers who are employed by an agency listed in Section 830.1, or by the military or naval forces of this state or of the United States when on duty and when the use of silencers is authorized by the agency and is within the course and scope of their duties.
(c) The manufacture, possession, transportation, or sale or other transfer of silencers to an entity described in subdivision (a) by dealers or manufacturers registered under Chapter 53 (commencing with Section 5801) of Title 26 of the United States Code, and the regulations issued pursuant thereto.

Yet he rails against suppressors. He even lies about the requirements of purchase, ignoring that it’s the kind of exemption that people like Feinstein and CA law carve out that made it possible for him to buy them. And people are eating it up. There are NFA tax stamp owners all over the country who’ve paid $200 for each suppressor they own, regardless of whether they bought them as an individual or through a trust, who were intensely investigated by the ATF for upwards of eight months or more before permission was granted to pick up or manufacture their suppressor.

Finland, France, Norway and New Zealand don’t regulate suppressors at all, yet here I am, in a country with a constitutional right to bear arms, watching people advocate and approve of public policy as articulated by an abjectly evil, manipulative multiple murderer.

I’m all for making sure extensive background checks get done on every purchase or transfer, even between family and for inheritances. I’m all for heavily restricting compact handguns, the weapons used in the vast majority of firearms crime. I’m all for sensible safe storage and transport requirements. What I’m absolutely against is the current focus on cosmetic features and attempts to address symptoms instead of the disease, along with the demonization of gun owners in general as inherently irresponsible, compensating, wannabe superheroes.

However, just in case you missed it, I’ll say it again: whatever the LAPD and his fellow officers may have done to Dorner in the course of his dismissal from the department DOES NOT justify his current course of action.

It struck me last week how the L.A. law enforcement press conferences sounded like something out of a Batman movie.

Good fictional villains hold up a mirror to the meanest desires of the audience, and they strike such a chord because there’s something about them that people like. They’re designed that way by creative minds. The bad guy sometimes does something you wish YOU could do, otherwise he wouldn’t entertain.

Evidently some people are confusing admiration of The Joker with admiring a real-life murderer, who didn’t kill “just cops”…

Easier than a dog in my opinion. Cat goes and does business without your involvement; no need to hurry home to let dog out, can do a day trip without worrying about letting the dog out, etc.

Caring for a litter box is scooping it every day (or two), putting the balls in a small garbage bad, and dumping. And adding more litter as needed. There is even the equivalent of the “Diaper Genie” for cat litter now.

I think he’s a nutty fruitcake. Sure, there’s some political stuff in his manifesto but I don;t think he’s politically motivated. An ex cop would be in favor of gun control measures, it’s just common sense. The dude’s a nut, he’s lost his marbles. I think it’s a mistake to take an insane murderer and use him as a political tool. Leave him as the nut that he is.

He has no political value. Whatever truth is in his accusations has been overwritten by his actions. LAPD can shrug and say they were obviously right to dump him.

The military term “force multiplier” comes to mind.

Because one man (Dorner) has both the motivation-to-use and the access to the required weaponry, and by targeting the very means society has to police itself, his effect seems quite magnified compared to what a single person normally can accomplish.

Pretty much, with caveats.

If he’s taken alive, Dorner’s actions have discredited him. If he commits suicide, either directly by his own hand or in suicide-by-cop, then the LAPD won’t have the direct pressure it does right now to “do something”, so they probably won’t, unless the DoJ starts breathing down their necks again.

Think the “public interest perspective” kinda lays it out. They’re not trying to draw him out so much as ensure that his allegations gain no hold in the event that he ends up dead when this is all over. Put to rest the idea that the LAPD killed him to hide any skeletons in its closet.

This is kind of awesome:

That was the MO of one Willie Sutton, a celebrated American bank robber known as “the Actor” and “Slick Willie” because of his proclivity for disguises. He frequently posed as a Western Union messenger and arrived at a target bank or store just as it was opening. Other favorite getups included a maintenance man, a policeman, a diplomat and a window cleaner. Once, in 1947, Sutton escaped the Philadelphia County Prison in Homesburg, Pa., in the guise of a prison guard. When searchlights caught him trying to scale the prison wall, he yelled, “It’s OK,” which fooled the real guards and allowed Sutton to escape.

During the war, and following the massive deterioration of internal security under the incompetent Ustaše regime, the Nazis tried to create a quisling Waffen-SS unit in Bosnia called the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian) in February 1943. Imam Halim Malkoć was the only Muslim to earn the German Iron Cross during World War II. The formation was not very successful, and many men deserted to the Communist partisans. But the existence of this unit served as very useful anti-Muslim propaganda after 1945.

As well as Serbians from the other side. Bosnians have not had a good century.

A lesser known fact about that particular theater of war is that the Italian troops assigned to Yugoslavia committed their share of ‘reprisal’ murder as well, sometimes executing dozens at a time. Unlike the Germans, though, the Italians did not specifically target Jews. But they were ruthless enough as it was.

His hate of America is just sick. It’s not criticism at this point, just a full-on hate geyser.

I find it funny that Albania has always been resistant to superpowers or great powers intruding.

Well, until us. Now, they are likely our most loyal ally.

I also just did the number crunching, what with the war crimes trials in Bangladesh.

Depending on when you put the starting and ending date of the Holocaust, I found that, even with the highest possible figures, the Bengali Genocide killed more people per day, at 6,000-12,000 people per day for 260 days in 1971

The LAPD’s reaction probably should frighten people, it’s pretty disconcerting how quickly and thoroughly one man has been able to unravel them.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Dorner killed himself in an area where he wouldn’t be found in a long time, just to fuck with the LAPD and make them sweat.

It’s part of Catholic doctrine, proclaimed at the 1st Vatican Council in 1870 (the same year as the Franco-Prussian War, BTW). It could not be be done away with without another council of the Church.

You know, I might be a severely lapsed Catholic, but it still irritates me somewhat when people get “our” doctrines wrong. Papal infallibility is probably the second-most misunderstood concept, after the immaculate conception.

As for Papa Ratzi being a Nazi…. look, I really don’t like the guy, but he was fucking 14. And yes, membership in the Hitler Youth was indeed mandated by law.

It’s NB(F)D that the pope was a Nazi kid. It’s more telling that he was chosen from among 209 cardinals by a conclave that largely lived through the Nazi era.

Well, many of them are Italian.
But seriously: maybe it just didn’t matter. Again, as bad as his other political/religious opinions might be, I see no indication that Ratzinger ever expressed even the slightest hint of sympathy for National Socialism.
And damn, I can’t believe I’m defending this mischpoke of bigoted, geriatric virgins.

I’m a lot more impressed by the Catholic kids of the White Rose. (I’ve taken white roses to Munich, and twisted them through the wrought-iron gate of the University.)

Since the Nazi era, the Italian domination of the consistories has dropped by about half, to around 30%.

Oh yes. I guess one question every one of us (Germans) inevitably asks ourselves, when confronted with our country’s past is “What would I have done”? And while I’d like to pretend otherwise, I don’t think I would have had the courage those White Rose kids had; even if my political convictions were the same then as they are now (which isn’t a given, naturally).

That’s OK, it was just a stupid factoid. (A classmate from my tiny highschool/college will vote for the next pope, conceivably be the first American pope.)

So God created Dog for Man, and Man discovered Beer, and his life was perfect, but he was too stupid to realize that.
