I was on an Octopus (like the Wedding Cake, but just one layer) that was run by a masochist. If I hadn’t been wedged in between two bigger girls, I’m sure I would have been flung out. One of the other girls had her glasses fly off. They were found near the machinery in the middle.
Longest ride of my life, although not 14 hours.

I’m sorry, but this is getting really annoying:
The LAPD chief on Saturday described the police shooting of two women who were driving a pickup similar to the one Dorner owned as a “tragic, horrific incident.”
Wrong make, wrong model, wrong color, wrong license plate number, wrong gender, age and ethnicity of occupants, but other than that, yeah, totally goddamned similar in as much as they were both pickup trucks -> so they opened fire without warning. Why does the press keep repeating this ridiculous bullshit?

Not an accident, gross incompetence/negligence.
11 | goddamnedfrank Sun, Feb 10, 2013 3:10:08am |
Oh, and the Torrance police, who shot and rammed the second truck, are attempting to bury the incident under a Guinness record pile of bullshit:
David Perdue was on his way to sneak in some surfing before work Thursday morning when police flagged him down. They asked who he was and where he was headed, then sent him on his way.
Seconds later, Perdue’s attorney said, a Torrance police cruiser slammed into his pickup and officers opened fire; none of the bullets struck Perdue.
His pickup, police later explained, matched the description of the one belonging to Christopher Jordan Dorner — the ex-cop who has evaded authorities after allegedly killing three and wounding two more. But the pickups were different makes and colors. And Perdue looks nothing like Dorner: He’s several inches shorter and about a hundred pounds lighter. And Perdue is white; Dorner is black.
But wait, it gets better:
According to the Beach Reporter, the 2006 Honda pickup involved in the second shooting was registered to Redondo Beach resident Lizzette Perdue. She would not speak with reporter Larry Altman about the truck’s involvement.
In an email advisory sent Thursday morning, authorities described Dorner’s vehicle as a dark gray Nissan Titan with a ski rack on top of the vehicle. The truck was later found burning in Big Bear.
Torrance police originally indicated that the second shooting was unrelated to the Dorner investigation.
Fucking awesome or what. At first they deny that the incident was in any way related to the hunt for Dorner, then watch next they try to blame the poor guy for their T-boning and shooting at him. Why? Because they thought he was Dorner. Back to the first article:
A department spokesman said Saturday that the shooting is still under investigation. In a statement to The Times, the department said: “The circumstances of the incident known to the responding officers would have led a reasonable officer under normal circumstances — and these were far from normal circumstances — to believe that fellow officers were being shot at and that the vehicle traveling toward them posed a serious risk.
“In the split seconds available to them,” the statement continued, “action was appropriate to intervene and stop the actions of the driver of that vehicle.”
According to the police department, Perdue’s car was headed directly for one of their patrol vehicles and appeared not to be yielding. When the vehicles collided, Perdue’s air bag went off, blocking the view of the driver, and one officer fired three rounds.
Now, back to the second article:
Shortly after the women delivering papers were fired on, two Torrance police officers in a cruiser saw a truck that also looked to them like Dorner’s, according to a Torrance Police Department statement from Sgt. Chris Roosen. The officers were responding to a “shots fired” call when they noticed the truck “suddenly leaving” the area where the LAPD detectives had opened fire.
The squad car purposely collided with the black truck on Flagler Lane south of Beryl Street, “and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the statement.
Isn’t that precious. Here’s a picture of Perdue’s truck, notice that there’s not a scratch of damage to the front. In fact it looks to have been PIT maneuvered from the drivers side rear quarter. That whole story about Perdue traveling towards the police, not yielding and colliding with them was just that, a story.

Nervous in the service?
That’s 85% of it. There is also the fact that a standard counter to an ambush is suppressive “mad minute” directed at the would be ambushers.
Lastly, there are sometimes people who use a crisis to ‘cut loose’ in some evil way. Often this a bigoted person who, feeling free of normal restraints, can indulge his paranoia and desire to ‘defend himself and his community’ from whoever he feels ‘the enemy’ is (the male pronoun is used here because this sort of act of bigoted violence is almost always perpetrated by men). The crisis can give him a cover story for his murderous actions. Think of the black civilians shot on that bridge in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

Since Dorner’s name has come up, it looks like the LAPD is reopening the case into his firing from the Department in 2009.
Beck said he was reopening the investigation “not to appease a murderer” but to assure the public that his department is fair and transparent. He said he wanted to protect an “increasingly positive relationship with the community” that the LAPD has developed over the last few years.
“I am aware of the ghosts of the LAPD’s past and one of my biggest concerns is that they will be resurrected by Dorner’s allegations of racism within the department,” Beck said in a prepared statement. “…Therefore, I feel we need to also publicly address Dorner’s allegations regarding his termination of employment.”
DOCUMENT: Chief Beck’s statement regarding Dorner
Dorner was stripped of his badge in 2009 after a police disciplinary board found him guilty of making false statements against his training officer, Teresa Evans. In August 2007, Dorner accused Evans of kicking a mentally ill man during an arrest in San Pedro.
The internal affairs investigation concluded that Evans had not kicked the man and that Dorner was lying.
Police said Dorner has killed three people, including a Riverside police officer, and injured two others over the past week in a campaign to take revenge on those he blamed for his dismissal from the LAPD.
At a news conference Saturday, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith announced that a special joint task force was being formed to investigate the Dorner case. Participating agencies include the Irvine and Riverside police departments, the FBI, the U.S. marshal’s office and other law enforcement organizations.
Dorner remained a fugitive Saturday despite an interstate manhunt that included SWAT teams, armored-personnel carriers and helicopters with heat-detecting cameras.
In their third day of searching for the 33-year-old Navy veteran, authorities kept their focus on the mountains around Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County.
It’s most certainly an attempt to appease Dorner and it was likely done with the intent to flush him out so he surrenders - or at least makes some kind of appearance so that the LEOs can track him down. They weren’t going to do that lightly if they felt certain about his case.

re: #18 Dark_Falcon
That’s the biggest danger in this situation, at least from my perspective. I don’t think Dorner will be able to do much damage on his own, especially now that the individual officers he threatened personally are all holed up and under constant protection.
But it might very well give some… unstable individuals an excuse to go cop-hunting, especially considering that the LAPD’s conduct in those last few days has been less than stellar (although their paranoia is understandable).

Indeed, and it happens everywhere. Here in Europe, the excesses might not be as bad as they can be in the US (no offense), but the structure is the same. Every authoritarian system is naturally prone to corruption from outside and within.
Alas, much like the State and the Military, I see the Police as a necessary evil with no viable alternative. So I guess the only option is a lot of watchmen-watching.

In many ways it has to be that way, for not all of the criticism leveled at the LAPD is honest. Some of it is retaliatory, accusations made by criminals against those who arrested them. Some is blame avoidance, people seeking to excuse their own failing and/or crimes. And some dishonest criticism is just plain paranoia.
There’s enough dishonest criticism that gets stridently projected that it is difficult for an honest cop to tell what is true and what is fake, especially if she herself has been accused falsely (as many police are, though normally such false allegations don’t have much effect). Thus there is a natural tendency to stand together against the ‘howling mob’ of detractors.

He also made the allegation after receiving a bad evaluation, which made his allegation of prisoner abuse questionable from the get-go.
There is also the fact that Dorner’s training officer was a woman, so it remains possible that Dorner himself is a bigot, that meaning one of those men who has intense antipathy to female authority.

It appears he called the family of one of victims he murdered.
ABC:
A man claiming to be Dorner called Randall Quan and told him that that he “should have done a better job of protecting his daughter,” according to the documents.
In his 6,000-word “manifesto,” Dorner named Randal Quan, a retired LAPD captain and attorney who represented him before a police review board that led to Dorner’s dismissal from the force.
“I never had an opportunity to have a family of my own, I’m terminating yours,” Dorner wrote, and directed Quan and other officials to “[l]ook your wives/husbands and surviving children directly in the face and tell them the truth as to why your children are dead.”
Monica Quan and her fiancé Keith Lawrence were gunned down last Sunday in their car in the parking of their Irvine, Calif., condominium complex. Both were struck with multiple gunshot wounds.
The call, according to court records, was traced to Vancouver, Wash., but law enforcement officials do not believe Dorner was there at the time at the call.
Dorner is believed to have made the call early Thursday afternoon, less than half a day after he is suspected of killing a police officer and wounding two others early that morning, sparking an unprecedented man hunt involving more than a thousand police officers and federal agents spanning hundreds of miles.

The Germans invented the term Bauernopfer making the peasants pay for it, the equivalent of throwing someone under the bus back before they had busses…
I saw how the US military dealt with the problem of sexual harrassment: I remember then-secretary of defense Cohen announcing a crackdown and thought”watch, there will be a show trial, somebody not too low in the hierarchy, it cannot seem like they are picking on enlisted men for things officers get away with. But not too high up, either, it canot look like people in leadership positions are getting away with this, either.”
so they charged the Sergeant master of the Army, the highest-ranking enlisted man, with sexual harrassment.
And get this, he was acquitted on charges of sexual harrssment, but convicted on charges of lying to a jury…in other words, he didn’t do it, but he lied about not doing it…he was then allowed an honorable discharge, so he could keep his pension and benefits.

The grinning NCIS: Los Angeles actor looked dapper in his rose-coloured jumper over a black shirt and tie, grey shiny jeans, and black dress shoes.
‘[I’m] excited and grateful to be back. They have some great things planned and I hope people find it as exciting as we do,’ the charismatic emcee told USA Today.
Meanwhile, his own 13th studio album, Authentic, is scheduled to be released on May 7.
LL Cool J - short for Ladies Love Cool James - gleefully posed for pictures of the free celebrity swag, including a $63 box of Chakalates benefitting children’s charity, The Chaka Khan Foundation.
According to Hollywood Today, the most coveted items being handed out to the glitterati included MTG’s portable ion mist device valued at $235, a $450 Jäger iOsonic toothbrush, and Gibson Les Paul studio guitars selling for $1155.

I’m not much interested in nuance, but the fact that he is cold-blooded is part of why he is more interesting to me than most spree killers. A mentally ill mass killer does not reveal much to me beyond some occasional institutional and societal failings, and further makes me worry about making sure my own head is on straight.
Dorner, by contrast, acted according to a plan that shows knowledge of tracking countermeasures and ambush tactics. While terrifying, such tactics do interest a part of my mind, since I always am interested in “how to fight” stories. Learning how an effective ambush is staged gives insight into how to survive an ambush.

Super ninja stealth kitty. My cat, on the other hand, has all the subtlety and nuance of a brick. He’ll take off from wherever he is and run straight to me whenever I open the basement door.

I call bullshit on the drone’s stated abilities as well. No drone that small has a 2000+ mile range. 200 mile range I’d believe, but not 2486.
I’m also pretty sure that car can’t do 75 mph. It probably can’t even be used on a breezy day.

There is one more cat in the fish household, but she’s harder to photograph because she is an outdoor kitty. She was our rescue cat who had to be moved outside due to behavioral issues (namely, peeing on everything in the house). She is a mackerel tabby, smaller than most as she was the runt of her litter. She has a heated kitty house and water bowl, and I dig out her food dish after every snowstorm.

One of Basement Cat’s favorite places to sleep is on top of my tower, because it’s warm, of course. But it is in a cubby under my desk, which is always dark. So I go downstairs, turn on the lights, and am immediately illuminated with kitty targeting lasers from underneath the desk.

We have a pad for outdoor kitty, which heats her kitty house. Since the basement is finished (you saw the couch Basement Cat was sitting on) we don’t worry about the other two too much. I don’t mind her on top of my computer, aside from the startling factor.

Report: Black students in Mississippi face tougher discipline
Black students in Mississippi’s public schools are more than twice as likely as white students to be disciplined and punished, according to a new report from the Children’s Defense Fund.
Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Washington-based group, said Friday in Jackson many black students are on a school-to-prison pipeline that’s undermining 50 years of civil rights progress.
“We do not need to institute slavery under another name, and that’s what mass incarceration is becoming,” said Edelman, who worked as an attorney in Mississippi during the civil rights era and was the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar Association.

I kept Moral Grey Area Cat in a bathroom to help get him acclimated, both when I adopted him and when we moved into the new house. However, now that they have asserted their dominance of the basement domain, we’ve closed off the bathroom because it needs to be kept clean for use by guests. There is an amazing amount of support for the murderer thats still on the loose. He kills 3 people including a cop and is threatening more members on the LAPD and their families and still he’s got supporters and fan. Unreal.
…It’s hard to believe but there are those out there who sympathize with the man targeting police officers.
One Facebook page is proclaiming Dorner for president. “We propose electing a man who could no longer sit idly by and watch as malicious tyrants abuse the innocent.”
The description on “We Are All Chris Dorner” chillingly says, “Yes, this is war.”
Nearly 3,000 people like the page “I Support Christopher Jordan Dorner.”
CBS13 posted a simple question: Why? Why support a man wanted for at least three killings and the author of a murderous manifesto promising to target cops?
One sympathizer wrote us, “Because something needs to be done about the long known corruption of not only the LAPD, but several agencies.”

Muslim Brotherhood want aide as top Egypt cleric
Egypt’s ruling Muslim Brotherhood has nominated one of its senior leaders for the influential position of grand mufti, the nation’s top cleric, defying critics who accuse the Islamist group of seeking to dominate all institutions.
….
The leading candidate is Abdul Rahman al-Bar, 50, a member of the Brotherhood’s decision-making Supreme Guidance Council who was jailed under Mubarak and helped draft a new constitution adopted in December that expanded Islamic oversight. His appointment would tighten the conservative Brotherhood’s grip on power, replacing liberal-minded preacher Ali Gomaa, 61, who had publicly condemned radical fatwas, including some issued by Brotherhood supporters.
…..
In an interview with Reuters last June, Bar said Muslims should be barred from both buying and selling alcohol, but that Muslim women should not be compelled by law to wear headscarves.

I simply do not understand why it would be so difficult to run the plate number, and you cannot tell me that every cop in the state didn’t know the make, model and color of this guy’s truck. Instead it seems like it was open season on any pick up in gray, black or blue. And to say they weren’t trained to hunt down and catch one of their own is horseshit. He’s a man, not some super criminal. I get that he has military training and he’s motivated by revenge, but so are other criminals who weren’t ex-cops.

Geo’s around 36Mm, so the total circumference of the orbit is around 265Mm. There are about 300 geostationary satellites. At most, the rock could pass through the belt twice (it’s vastly more likely that it would pass through the belt zero times). Let’s assume it sweeps out a 200m swath in each case. So we might estimate the probability of a satellite loss at one in 662500.
So… pretty low.

On our new plastic bills they have cute scenes of Canucks doing something. When the first ones were about to come out, one of the characters looked Asian, so an outcry reverberated somewhere in the empty brain pans of the Canadian right and they changed the picture before release.

A decent article which they’d never post if there was a Republican in the white house. There’s been a split among the moonbats who wanted Bush tried for war crimes. The Glenn Greenwald faction would be just as happy to have Obama arrested and the partisans who are more flexible depending political affiliation of the president.
I think now that the election is over we’re seeing a lot of the moonbats reverting to their crazy selves because they don’t have to worry as much about damaging their party.

I think they’ll moderate, I’m pretty sure of that. But I’ve stated very clearly several times and I think it’s going to take a decade. The Republicans are going to have to lose another election or two before they get desperate enough to embrace serious politics again.
Although most of Rand Paul’s version of libertarianism is just repackaged conservative dogma there is a path forward for Republicans with libertarian thought (or at least catch phrases).
I don’t know where the Republicans are going to end up but my guess is it’s going to take a a couple election cycles to get a decent farm team of candidates for their desired direction.

Actually, no, you predicted that Romney would bring the party back to the middle during the general election, a lot. And you predicted they’d moderate after the election. I’m glad to see you’re being more realistic now, though.
Although most of Rand Paul’s version of libertarianism is just repackaged conservative dogma there is a path forward for Republicans with libertarian thought (or at least catch phrases).
No, it’s not. It’s more accurate to say that conservatism, by and large, has been thrown aside by the GOP and replaced with minarchist libertarianism, except on social issues. This is why you have so many lifelong conservatives repudiating the current state of the party.

Ohio mayor resigns after alleged anti-gay slurs
The mayor of a southeastern Ohio village who was accused earlier this week of degrading a gay police officer and refusing to allow his partner to visit the police station has resigned.
…She was accused of calling Calendine a queer and using other slurs. Others said she didn’t want Calendine’s partner stopping by the police department, though family members of other officers routinely drop by with lunch or before or after a shift.
…“She stated ‘I don’t like a Queer working for the Village, I might be old-fashioned, but I don’t like it.’” Proffitt wrote in the statement.
The mayor persisted in making crude comments about the officer and his partner to police department employees, Proffitt said.

BTW, Portlandia is still a damn funny show. I caught a few bad episodes a while back and stopped watching. Watched a few of the new ones, still really good. Rosanne Barr did a great cameo as the temporary mayor.

Hey!
At least the Dems keep the fringe on the fringe.
The GOP mainstreamed their fringe.

Oh bouy. Now it’s something about Jack Lew having had $100,000 invested in the Cayman Islands.

Keeping the fringe on the fringe is hard work.

Well, I just have to point out that it’s extremely easy to find examples of liberals who are NOT down with the Greenwald anti-drone line. Yeah, some left wingers are overreacting, but it’s far from universal. In fact, it’s very much a fringe thing.
Some of the left wing talk about drones is over the top, yes, but it’s not a bad thing to discuss where the limits of power are.
