John Birch Society Freaking Out About Southern Poverty Law Center

DARVO
Wingnuts • Views: 24,105

In many ways, the John Birch Society is the prototype for the modern right wing, and this deranged rant at their official website is a perfect example. The twisted talking points are identical to the stuff you can read every day at any right wing blog or media site: Extremist Group Exposed Working With Obama’s Justice Department. (Google cache link.)

As if Obama’s politicized Justice Department was not embroiled in enough scandals — Fast and Furious gun-trafficking to Mexican drug cartels, the subsequent coverup and lies, disgraced Attorney General Eric Holder held in criminal contempt of Congress, lawless “legal memos” purporting to justify assassinating U.S. citizens without charge or trial, training police to believe Americans may be terrorists for political activism, and more — there is now yet another travesty to add to the growing list. Documents released recently exposed the department working intimately with one of the most controversial extremist groups in America.

E-mails released last Tuesday by the non-partisan Judicial Watch group showed that Obama’s increasingly out-of-control Department of Justice was collaborating closely with the ultra-leftist Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). To make matters worse, hate-mongering propaganda issued by the widely criticized organization — ridiculed and blasted by critics as a discredited far-left attack group — was implicated last year in an attempted mass-shooting at the conservative-leaning Family Research Council headquarters in Washington, D.C.

After the failed terror attack scheme to murder FRC employees, concerned conservatives and even some homosexual groups all across America expressed increasing alarm over the dangerous rhetoric and propaganda distributed by the SPLC, equating mainstream pro-family and Christian groups with the organizations like KKK, neo-Nazis, and terrorists, for example. The SPLC and its hysterical attacks were immediately thrust into the spotlight — especially after it was revealed that the shooter and would-be terrorist used the organization’s “hate map” propaganda to select his target.

Yes, it is. You can’t always tell a man’s character by his face. Chris Dorner resembles ‘Cool James’ greatly, but their minds work very differently.

Those of you who post LGF Pages will notice that submitting a page has a new polished look to it. It no longer reloads the window when you post (the old-fashioned way to submit an HTML form) — it’s done with Ajax and some nice fadeIn/fadeOut effects now.

I actually had a technical reason for doing this besides the fact that it looks pretty slick — it helps with character encoding issues to pass the text through Javascript’s escape() function.

When I click on “create a page”, the title of whatever thread I happen to have open at the time automatically becomes the title of my page.

That’s how it’s supposed to work. The idea is that you install that link as a bookmarklet in your browser, and then when you click the bookmarklet the title is filled in with the current page’s title, and the text is filled in with any text you’ve selected by clicking and dragging.

If you set it up that way, it’s much easier to post articles from other sites - you just go to the page you want to post, select some text, click the bookmarklet, and everything comes up already filled in for you.

It starts off pointing out the thing that got me outraged yesterday.

The U.S. House of Representatives held its first hearings for the current session on immigration reform Tuesday. Many immigration groups also submitted official testimony for the record. One name, in particular, jumped out as questionable, at best, in terms of being an expert witness on the topic of immigration—Jessica Vaughan, who submitted a written statement. Vaughan is the director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), an organization that portrays itself as an “independent, non-partisan, non-profit, research organization” that advocates a “low-immigration, pro-immigrant” public policy. In reality, CIS is connected to a shadowy network of anti-immigrant funders and activists who participate in or are associated with movements for white nationalism.

Use of such rhetoric in the article Charles linked in the post:

is a big red flag. Sadly, I find it takes more and more careful reading to distinquish the intent. The NRA is very good at it too. It’s written in such a way that one just reads on and doesn’t necessarily register the subliminal intent.

A federal arrest affidavit states Dorner’s burned-out truck was found near the property of a known associate in the Big Bear Lake area Thursday afternoon.

If true then there’s good odds that he had another vehicle stashed there and is long gone at this point.

Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD cop who allegedly killed three people has been on the run, successfully evading police, for over a week. To finally track him down, it seems that law enforcement is pulling out all the stops. According to the Express, Dorner is now a target for drones, among the first ever on U.S. soil.

At first I thought Dorner’s pledge to bring asymmetric warfare to bear was some brand of ridiculous bluster. But now as this stretches into days of manhunt, terrified police panic shootings against innocent people and now, drones, I’m starting to wonder. The signature feature of an asymmetric conflict is the amount of money and resources a weaker foe can get their adversary to commit to the fight.

Strictly from a sociological / criminological point of view, the precedent Dorner has been able to set so far is pretty fucking disturbing.

73 Decatur Deb  Sun, Feb 10, 2013 2:46:09pm

The whole ‘drone’ issue is idiocy. Drones exist to save pilots from prohibitive risks of AAA. They are going to give credence to the claims about SA-7 missiles.

re: #76 Ming

Buckley’s proteges at National Review include enablers and outright perpetrators of some of the most disgusting excesses in hack right-wing “journalism” since his death. As much as it’s tempting to swallow the “Buckley-truly-cleaned-house-on-the-Right” mythos (he most certainly pushed the JBS to the margins, but just look at his fellow travelers in opposition to civil rights…) - there is simply no way to separate the man from the folks he ultimately brought to NR in his final years with the publication. They, and the cretins to whom they have given a platform for bigoted, extremist drivel, prove that Buckley’s house cleaning did not extend to future considerations involving those to whom he passed the mantle. WFB may, rightly, have come across as (relatively) more intellectually honest and ideologically tame than an unapologetic white supremacist like John Derbyshire, an uber-right Catholic obsessive like Katherine Jean Lopez, or Ann-Coulteresque hatchet-man Mark Steyn. Buckley was, nevertheless, complicit in their rise to prominence.

OK: I hadn’t been aware of the FRC shooting incident before (our “liberal media” in action, I guess) but apparently the SPLC’s “implication” in the incident is mainly the usual unfounded whining from the FRC:

In a statement released after Corkins’ plea, the head of the Family Research Council blamed the shooting in part on the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has labeled his organization a hate group.

In his plea agreement, Corkins acknowledged he identified the Council as “an anti-gay organization” by visiting Southern Poverty’s website.

This, btw, was from a article last week recounting that the FRC shooter had pleaded guilty, and was headed for a lengthy stay as a guest of the Commonwealth of Virginia - he sounds like a grade-A nut, incidentally: and as such, only too likely to fail.

81 factfinder  Mon, Feb 11, 2013 1:15:55pm

The irony of this JBS rant (which I am sure totally escapes them) is that for its entire 54 year existence, the Birch Society has explicitly described its perceived opponents and critics as dangerous, subversive, un-American, traitors, etc.

Furthermore, the JBS has relentlessly equated mainstream liberal groups with the Communist Party. For example, this gem appears in the JBS Blue Book,

“But the ADA [Americans For Democratic Action] whether a lot of its members know it or not, is the same as an arm of the Communist Party. Its weight can be thrown, and is thrown, time after time, with never an exception, in support of Communist objectives.”

OR

This comment from the May 2008 JBS Bulletin:

“Just as the John Birch Society showed in the 1960’s that the communists basically ran both the civil rights movement and the KKK, the strategy was nothing new. The former was used to transfer power to Washington DC in the name of civil rights and the latter provided a pretext for transferring power to Washington. You cannot get a really good conflict started unless you control both sides of the argument.”

AND any liberal who dared to express support for our civil rights movement and its leaders was instantly denounced by the JBS as an ignorant fool (or worse).

Lastly, it should be remembered that the Birch Society and its surrogates have been the subject of many libel lawsuits. When the JBS and its surrogates have had the opportunity to prove the accuracy of their accusations in a courtroom environment - they have failed.

The most famous example being the historic precedent-setting libel lawsuit brought by Chicago lawyer Elmer Gertz whom the JBS described in an article published in its monthly magazine as “a Communist fronter” and a “Leninist” engaged in a “conspiracy” against Chicago police.

After 14 years of litigation, including 2 different jury trials, numerous appeals, and review by the U.S. Supreme Court, the JBS paid Gertz $100,000 in compensatory damages and $300,000 in punitive damages for malice. As you may know, punitive damages are only allowed when “malice” can be shown. Malice, in legalese, refers to “reckless disregard for truth” arising from evil intent and a desire to inflict injury, harm, or suffering.

So, given this background, it is hilarious that the JBS now objects to anything which SPLC has done or said.
