Study Confirms Tea Party Was Created by Big Tobacco and Billionaires

A new academic study confirms that front groups with longstanding ties to the tobacco industry and the billionaire Koch brothers planned the formation of the Tea Party movement more than a decade before it exploded onto the U.S. political scene.

Far from a genuine grassroots uprising, this astroturf effort was curated by wealthy industrialists years in advance. Many of the anti-science operatives who defended cigarettes are currently deploying their tobacco-inspired playbook internationally to evade accountability for the fossil fuel industry’s role in driving climate disruption.

The study, funded by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health, traces the roots of the Tea Party’s anti-tax movement back to the early 1980s when tobacco companies began to invest in third party groups to fight excise taxes on cigarettes, as well as health studies finding a link between cancer and secondhand cigarette smoke.

Published in the peer-reviewed academic journal, Tobacco Control, the study titled, ‘To quarterback behind the scenes, third party efforts’: the tobacco industry and the Tea Party, is not just an historical account of activities in a bygone era. As senior author, Stanton Glantz, a University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) professor of medicine, writes:

“Nonprofit organizations associated with the Tea Party have longstanding ties to tobacco companies, and continue to advocate on behalf of the tobacco industry’s anti-tax, anti-regulation agenda.”

The two main organizations identified in the UCSF Quarterback study are Americans for Prosperity and Freedomworks. Both groups are now “supporting the tobacco companies’ political agenda by mobilizing local Tea Party opposition to tobacco taxes and smoke-free laws.” Freedomworks and Americans for Prosperity were once a single organization called Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE). CSE was founded in 1984 by the infamous Koch Brothers, David and Charles Koch, and received over $5.3 million from tobacco companies, mainly Philip Morris, between 1991 and 2004.

Taxes are too high and tax code too complicated. Who would think that? Probably people who make a lot of money. And they want us peasants to grab some pitchforks on their behalf.

And can we stop with how the tax code is so, so very complicated? I fill out a tax return every year that technically is one full piece of paper with lines on both sides, but I only put numbers in about 10 of those lines. I realize there’s more to it for business owners. But for most Americans the tax code is pretty simple.

any why the party took off like wildfire under obama, since for them black is the perfect color for a projection screen for all their pent-up rage and discontent with everything that a government chosen freely and fairly by the American electorate has “imposed” on them.

Finally, this report might serve as a wake-up call to some people in the Tea Party itself, who would find it a little disturbing that the “grassroots” movement they are so emotionally attached to, is in fact a pawn created by billionaires and large corporations with little interest in fighting for the rights of the common person, but instead using the common person to fight for their own unfettered profits.

I doubt there is a wake-up call loud enough to disturb the mental slumber of the average Teapartier. The want to believe in the thing they fell for.

It would be nice if a few woke up, though.

I will agree that for most people, the simple one page form is sufficient.

The tax code is still far, far too complicated. (And this is a separate issue from whether taxes are too high or not.) An example:

I was fortunate to have a scholarship that covered tuition, room, and board. Turns out, the room and board portion are considered taxable income. (No real issues with that.) But figuring out how and where to file that info and what impact it had on my taxes every year was not trivial.

89 lawhawk  Mon, Feb 11, 2013 1:35:05pm

Consider that the typical nuke in our inventory (2,200 warheads or so), are about 350kt (the W-87 warhead on the MX missile is 350, SLCM and other warheads are smaller, the Trident D-5 is 475kt ). All are considerably larger than the weapons used at either Hiroshima or Nagasaki and can be delivered far more precisely.

So, without further ado, here’s what it would do to your friendly neighborhood if someone dropped the bomb.

It will put some serious harsh in your mellow.

Reducing the number of weapons improves safety and storage, particularly because storage and disposal of the waste products (much of which is highly radioactive and deadly in nature) is already a huge headache and concern (and a cost). Cleaning up Oak Ridge and Hanford are decades-long projects to name two, and the challenges of storing radioactive debris for hundreds and thousands of years is something we still can’t address (and that’s for the lower radiation of nuclear power plants).

re: #89 lawhawk

Interesting site. I calculate that a one-megaton Minuteman W-59 warhead out cause damage all the way damned near to Prague Ruzyně Airport from Kladno.

Factor in a Tsar Bomba at design specs (100 megatons), and you can pretty much take out a sizable portion of the Czech Republic. One more over Brno would mostly finish the country off.

Apropos of the article, I’d like to have Charles tell us whose money backs pjmedia, and turned it into a den of GOP/tea party toadies.

re: #1 Bulworth

Taxes are too high and tax code too complicated. Who would think that? Probably people who make a lot of money. And they want us peasants to grab some pitchforks on their behalf.

And can we stop with how the tax code is so, so very complicated? I fill out a tax return every year that technically is one full piece of paper with lines on both sides, but I only put numbers in about 10 of those lines. I realize there’s more to it for business owners. But for most Americans the tax code is pretty simple.

What gets me is the endless moaning about how tax brackets and progressive marginal rates are so very complicated. That part is trivial, and can be set forth in a single page or less.

All of the complexity of the tax code is in defining taxable income. There is a lot of legitimate complexity there, but there is also a lot of BS complications that were put specifically into the tax code to let rich people make lots of their income non-taxable.
