Colbert followed this up with a bit on the ABC captioning of the Spanish version of the speech. Apparently the transcription was made by a computer that tried to interpret Rubio’s Spanish as though it were English. At least the result was refreshingly free of clichés.

Either GOP goes on record filibustering a candidate they already said they’d allow to come to a full vote 10 days from now or vote for cloture and prove there was never anything to their bluff.

I forced myself to watch Morning Joe the day after just to see what he’d say. After making several lame excuses for Rubio and listening to the other pundits, he finally admitted that that it was the same speech the GOP has been giving since 1994.

On Morning Joe they said he has tons of seasoned advisers hovering around, but claimed he writes his own speeches. He also said “He’s not ready, just like President Obama wasn’t,” at which point Mika jumped in and said that at least Obama hit it out of the park with his first big speech, heh.

They’re trying to cover their asses by claiming that the vote was really one to confirm Hagel, meaning it’s not officially a filibuster. But because Reid took a procedural vote to keep the nomination on the floor, it officially goes in the record as a GOP filibuster. McCain, Graham, and Alexander, all of whom said earlier today they’d be willing to vote for cloture after the recess unless a “bombshell” showed up voted against cloture. As did McConnell, who bitched up a storm during the Bush years that ever nominee deserves an up-or-down vote.

A proper lectern or podium to deliver the speech would have helped tremendously. The President had an advantage where he could have taken a sip of water while applause was going on in the Capitol, and probably had a glass of water somewhere within easy reach. Rubio had no such moments for pauses, but no one would have begrudged him a sip while speaking if the water bottle were similarly placed. Instead, the awkward move to the right, combined with the idea that he couldn’t break his gaze give the impression that he had never delivered a speech to a camera, and had only done so in front of an audience.
