President: Um… OoooKaay.. Next caller. Hello, this is the President what is your question?

I wish they’d talk to the same unscreened drunk lunatics that call in to C-SPAN.

Or maybe the “jive dudes” from the movie Airplane! I would pay good money to see those guys make an appearance, and even more money if the prez would seamlessly switch to “Jive” while answering their question, and then seamlessly switch back without the slightest acknowledgement that anything unusual had happened.

Occupy LA Claims Dorner ‘Assassinated For Trying To Expose LAPD Corruption’

The Facebook page for Occupy Los Angeles features several photos in support of Dorner after a manhunt that ended in a dramatic standoff at a cabin near Big Bear Lake.

Dorner’s California driver’s license was found near human remains that police believe to be Dorner.

Occupy L.A. posted a now-familiar photo of Dorner in military fatigues with the caption, “Rest In Power Chris Dorner: Assassinated by the Police for Trying to Expose LAPD Corruption”.

Another photo has a picture of a burning cabin that reads, “Due Process: You Have the Right to Burn Alive”.

Tea Party Nation: Jewish Democratic Group Proves Liberals are Nazis

Tea Party Nation head Judson Phillips sent an email to members today calling the National Jewish Democratic Council a Nazi group that, like other liberals, is “in love with totalitarian regimes” such as Hitler’s Germany. Phillips said their statement calling on Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to denounce Phillips’ recent comparison of liberals to Nazis is akin to Nazi book burning and proves that liberals “want to allow no dissent or freedom to disagree.”

Of course, asking a public official to denounce a group’s outrageous claims doesn’t take away anyone’s First Amendment rights, but the Tea Party Nation never really understood the Constitution anyway.

I was a very vocal opponent of the Tea Party back when LGF was a “wightwing”, many people were very unhappy about it. It’s important to speak up against radicals and people advocating violence. It’s especially important to speak up when people want this kept quiet and not discussed.

I’m also reasonably certain that many passengers are going to tell Carnival where they can shove their “Free cruise + $500” offer.

I’m also reasonably certain Carnival is about to eat a mountain of shit in lawsuits over this mess and they deserve every bit of it.

It’s also important to realize the relative importance of things.

OWS is a politically powerless group at this point; at its origin, it was not mainly radicals, and the concerns expressed— mostly about the rising wealth disparity— were real concerns, unlike the fake, made-up concerns of the Tea Party.

The Tea Party, and the conspiracy theories that permeate it, has become entrenched in GOP politics; the radicals are elected officials. To pay as much attention to OWS at this point compared to the bizarre conspiracy theories that are being touted by GOP elected officials— not random anarchists in a park, but people with actual power— in order to block the nomination of Hagel is nutty.

Lots of people other than you were able to criticize OWS without falling into the creepy territory you trod, too. I’d think you’d be more trying to live down that time period, like accusing other posters of supporting rape and violence while you nearly simultaneously declared a video of two women being assaulted to be awesome.

Sorry to go OT, but I wanted to share the Valentines gift I gave my wife. It was a small, intimate evening and it only cost me $12.

I bought two yummy deserts at a local bakery for $5 and set them up on our dinner table with a candle.

Then, as she finished desert, I ran a bath for her. I had decorated the bathroom a bit earlier and set out candles in there. I also made sure to have all her bath stuff handy.

I also made a simple photo collage of the two of us using nothing more than my printer and a 0.50 piece of poster board.

She enjoyed her bath. I gave her the option of whether or not she wanted me to get in with her, she decided not to. That was fine by me, the goal was for her to be relaxed, comfortable and doted on. So I played servant (handing her soap and such) while she enjoyed her bath.

Probably the best budget Valentines I’ve ever put together.

Still, the conspiracy-laden anti-Hagel articles in the conservative press enjoy a healthy life, thanks in no small part to conservative columnists like Jennifer Rubin, who has used her perch at The Washington Post to disseminate a string of conspiracy-tinged diatribes against Hagel. re: #82 Killgore Trout

Also I think it’s important to highlight Dorner’s fans and apologists. Here’s one from Salon
Christopher Dorner was not a monster

I know it’s an irresistible impulse for some people to see him as a political/social advocate but it seems to me he was probably mentally ill and not a very nice person. But embracing him seems a mistake a lot of people are willing to take.

Link didn’t work for me either.

That being said, I have no sympathy for Dorner. I think a lot of people are projecting their own views/experiences onto this situation and not thinking things through well, which is their prerogative. I reserve my right to think of them as idiots.

I do think it is symptomatic of people’s willingness to disengage from critical thought when something confirms their own biases, which isn’t all too surprising. We’re all capable of falling into it. Hopefully we’re all capable of pulling ourselves out of it when called on it. I try to be, at least.

Tonight the husband works late and I work later. But at least it’s from home today, as I finish up the appendices for the thesis and poke some more at the presentation, followed by more paper reading.

The article has been re-titled: [Link: www.salon.com…]

And it does not “embrace” Dorner, not in the slightest. If you actually read it, he’s very clear that Dorner was a criminal and a murderer. He’s making a point about violence and society and racism, and characterizing it as some kind of apologia for Dorner is just wrong.

re: #68 Gus

No self censorship here. None at all.

Let me put it this way: once a person burns away all their credibility by grossly misrepresenting stories they link to, it’s only natural that people will come to view everything they do as being deceitful and in bad faith.

95 Charles Johnson  Thu, Feb 14, 2013 4:40:55pm

Quote:

The initial response to the Dorner phenomena — like most phenomena involving madmen — has been to isolate it as an individual event, extrinsic to our society. Why does he hate us? Indeed, the presentation of most criminality is as something monstrous. This formulation ignores something crucial: it is impossible to arbitrarily separate some parts of our lives from the others. It is as foolish to presume that criminality is monstrous as it is to presume that the leg operates independently of the hip.

And so the Dorner incident, like all incidents involving madmen, requires us to consider the madness that structures life in America.

Baldwin’s midcentury injunction still holds today, absent the male normativity: we do need to take a hard look at ourselves. Why has Dorner attracted such support online, especially in communities of color? Why have two more LAPD officers, at great risk, come forward to address the free-flowing racism that characterizes their worklife? The questions we might ask will be fraught with peril, but there could be great positives: one of the key things that this experience has exposed is that a broader social consideration of what it means to live life ethically is gravely absent.

In Dorner’s case, the allegory of life to a furnace takes literal weight — he has died, consumed by fire. The police will celebrate, the chorus will quiet, the lives of his victims mourned. It is unlikely that the fire that burned away Dorner will burn away any illusion: this is unfortunate, and disturbing. His allegations will be dismissed as the rantings of a lunatic, things will return to normal. Until the fire, next time.

This is an interesting take on the real issues brought up by this case, not some simple-minded left wing article making Dorner into a hero. I don’t see why this is supposed to be so awful.

96 Varek Raith  Thu, Feb 14, 2013 4:42:26pm

I’ll be curious to see if there are arguments that we shouldn’t look into some of these potential issues just because the whole reason they’ve exploded into general awareness is because of a cold-blooded murderer and to look into them would “justify his actions”. *

It seems to me that if whole countries in Europe can do it and find it economical, then it follows that counties in this country can do it. I think the subject is more complex than just energy output, there are other factors like jobs, waste, etc to factor in.

I’d put him in the apologist category. There’s no excuse for Dorner, the LAPD didn’t create him. I think it’s a serious mistake on many levels to validate his complaints and actions. Worst of all it only encourages other people with mental issues that if they kill enough and create a media frenzy that their complaints will be taken seriously. I have little doubt the LAPD needs reform but I think it’s very important to keep it separate from Dorner’s manifesto and complaints.

`(12) intends to sell or otherwise dispose of the firearm or ammunition in furtherance of a crime of violence or drug trafficking offense or to export the firearm or ammunition in violation of law.

don’t know how one establishes intent in these cases.

Online chatter continues over Dorner rampage

The death of ex-Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner in a fiery standoff with authorities has done little to quell online chatter over a man whose rampage against law enforcement created a small but vocal following.

A Mexican crooner sings a traditional ballad titled “El Matapolicias,” or “The Police Killer,” in a video on Facebook with lyrics paying homage to Dorner’s campaign of revenge against the Los Angeles Police Department.

A video game titled “Christopher Dorner’s Last Stand Survival Game” on YouTube arms the player with a handgun to shoot out from the window of a wooden cabin into a snowy, pine-covered terrain. The first frame declares him “A True American Hero.”

While most supporters don’t condone killing people, they saw him as an outlaw hero who raged against powerful forces of authority. They even questioned whether he really died in an inferno in a mountain cabin in a resort town east of Los Angeles on Tuesday.

166 Killgore Trout  Thu, Feb 14, 2013 6:15:29pm

History repeats…

Experts said the fascination with Dorner’s story is rooted in the average person’s feeling of powerlessness against authority and a deep-seated desire to win over the system. Most people daydream about getting back at their boss.

“People love the idea of hiding out and beating the system,” said Bruce Jackson, distinguished professor of American culture at the State University of New York at Buffalo. “They get charmed with the chase and forget the reason for the chase. People cut it into two stories.”

Folklore around the world is full of such fugitives, famed more for their escapes from justice than for the misdeeds that made them flee: England’s Robin Hood, to name one. In the United States, Americans have a pantheon of western outlaws.

Even though the vast majority of fugitives get caught, going down in a hail of bullets only adds to the legend. Think Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

re: #5 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

But why this is relevant I have no idea.

There are some ACTUAL real hippies and pacificts in there, also, too.
