Agile/scrum is a great thing, if your project fits the profile. The problem our current client is having is, they’re trying to shoehorn all of their current projects into Agile projects, and some of them, it just ain’t working.

Ultrasound bill a ‘priority’ for anti-abortion lawmakers
The Wisconsin Capitol is a friendly place right now for those who oppose abortion.
That’s the message Wisconsin Right to Life Legislative Conference attendees repeatedly heard Tuesday from the state’s top two Republican lawmakers, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos.
“We are in a very good place in Wisconsin,” Vos said. “We have a pro-life Legislature, pro-life governor in Scott Walker and a pro-life attorney general (J.B. Van Hollen). We can all wrap our arms around this agenda.”
And it sounds like the first bill to get a warm reception from Republicans will be what’s being dubbed the “Woman’s Right to Know her Unborn Child Act,” also being termed the “ultrasound bill” by pro-choice forces.
The bill would require a woman seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound and be informed of what is visible on the monitoring screen — although the woman would not be forced to look at the image.
“This bill is a priority,” Fitzgerald said. “It is long overdue.”

These republicans have no shame. Here’s Senator Ron Johnson at a republican event sharing a stage with a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice:
Today, United Wisconsin calls on Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack to denounce inflammatory remarks made by Senator Ron Johnson at a Jefferson County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner, where the two were both among the featured speakers.
Johnson’s speech, riddled with extreme partisan rhetoric, went as far as calling political opponents “Marxists” and referring to their positions as a “cavity [that] is turning into an abscess that’s now infecting the body.” Johnson told his audience, “We are up against a strategy that is taking place by liberals, progressives, Democrats, whatever they call themselves nowadays, Socialists, Marxists.”
Sharing the stage with Johnson was incumbent Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack, who is currently seeking another ten-year term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Elizabeth Warren presses financial regulators: Why no trials for Wall Street?
At a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Thursday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) asked the nation’s top financial regulators why Wall Street firms who broke the law were not taken to trial.
“We face some very special issues with big financial institutions,” she said. “If they can break the law and drag in billions and billions in profits, and then turn around and settle — paying out of those profits — they don’t have much incentive to follow the law. It is also the case that every time there is a settlement and not a trial, we didn’t have those days and days and days of testimony about what those financial institutions had been up to.”
Warren asked how tough the financial regulators were and questioned them about the last time a major Wall Street firm had been put on trial.

The Carnival thing was ridiculous. I know those people had a shitty time (*rimshot*) but the whole thing seems like fodder for stand-up comedians to me. A bunch of tourists go on some dumb cruise, and suddenly it turns into something designed by Satan himself - Fire! darkness! Poop flowing down the walls! DMV lines just to get something to eat! The boat smells! Welcome to the 17th century kids, how do you think your ancestors got here? LOL… High seas and a lot of puking would have capped it off. Or, maybe after all that, Carnival could have distributed oars and put a press gang on rudder duty to try and get home. Rig sails out of sheets, even.
Matt Damon told me how many people don’t have basic sanitation just the other day. The worst fallout from this is that poor Carnival will have to start offering low-cost cruises for drunk frat boys, or maybe mass suicide groups, promising a one-way trip with a long jump off the boat at the end for low, low prices…

Simple answer in two parts, Liz:
1. Because your party, like mine, does not bite its paymaster. Wall Street pays the campaign bills that are incurred keeping politicians in power.
But primarily,
2. Because ‘Too Big to Fail’ is also ‘Too Big to Jail.’ You can’t topple the top leadership of that many large banks without one or more of them falling apart, and the fall of such a bank tips the economy back into recession. Most people, angry about the banks though they are, would rather let crooks get away with it than risk losing their jobs in a recession. It’s possible to call that cowardly, but it’s a choice, and it’s the choice the public tends to make.

Like I was saying earlier today, the only way to cap off this story is to hear Carnival, in order to recap the costs of repairs and sanitation that are no doubt going to be incurred just to make the ship seaworthy again, trying to send bills to passengers for damage to their rooms. You just know there’s some exec at Carnival thinking “There’s no way I’m giving up my plans for a new yacht just to cover these costs.”

I disagree, as in completely. If the Feds picked one or two particularly egregious assholes who actually broke the law and made an example out of them by charging them it would not send the economy into a tailspin. Do you really think the folks who landed at those jobs have some super secret set of special skills that can’t be replaced in oh about 20 minutes.

I wrote one of the two appendices that my advisor was like oh, by the way… today. The second needs me to refresh my memory on some of the technical aspects (because I did this 6 years ago and it’s a whole lot harder to publish negative results so we never did) so I guess I will stop by the office on Saturday. :(
Grad school was a horribly stupid idea.

So if I wanted to keep going on it, it would be pretty easy for me to find a job.

In a lot of ways, yes. But glass (particularly silicate and aluminosilicate, which is my area of focus) is used as a structural equivalent to a silicate melt, better known as magma.
Also, my advisor is in the geology department. Which is really the larger determining factor. I am somewhat field ambivalent. My bachelor’s is chemistry, my master’s materials science, and Ph.D. in geology.

Yeah. Bills in the mail, and then also I was waiting for customs to not let people off the boat immediately… Maybe TSA could get involved somehow, leading to a riot of some sort, maybe some local cops tossed in the water, or some wag setting a fire on the boat once they got docked… It would have been peachy for the whole freaking thing to go up in flames with all the TV cameras watching.
I’m sorry people had a bad time, but my inner Joker wanted it to get worse!

If done stupidly, perhaps.
Possibly even if done very smartly. Lots of chaotic elements would be in play and it would be possible for the government people involved to make literally all the right moves, only to see things go sideways when stuff they had no way of knowing about walks in out of left field.
Best course would be to leave the past in the past and break the biggest banks down a bit going forward.

“A meteorite exploded above the Chelyabinsk region (of the Urals). The shock wave blew out windows in several places.”
The interior ministry said people had been injured by flying glass at a school in Chelyabinsk.
“A meteorite disintegrated above the Urals (mountain range in central Russia), partially burning up in the lower atmosphere,” the local office of the national emergencies ministry said in a satement.
“Fragments of the meteorite reached Earth, falling in sparsely populated areas in the Chelyabinsk region,” it said.
Digital Pass $1 for first 28 Days“According to preliminary information, four people have been injured by flying glass,” it said.

I live on a hill, and maybe once every couple months I’m awoken by a low-flying jet or a really heavy quarry or logging truck going by. And so consciousness returns to a deep roar and a vibrations throughout my body. It takes a couple seconds to fully wake up, and push the panicked near certainty that I’m moments from being snuffed out in some kind of nuclear armageddon.
So I doubt I’d deal particularly well with experiencing a similar meteorite explosion to what’s being reported here :P.

Moscow is a city where you can stand on the corner and flag down a random vehicle and agree on a price for the driver to take you where you want to go. There are professional taxis in the city but they mostly go to and from the airports and tourist hotels.
Also Moscow=major gridlock, just from the way the city is laid out, and more vehicles than it can accommodate.

It was a tiny rusty Lada (Moscow only seemed to have tiny rusty cars or giant pimped-out SUVs , yeah it’s a broad brush I’m painting with, I know - I wasn’t there long and my memories are impressionistic)
We weren’t keen on the way the crapmobile swerved under braking, at one point across another traffic lane and onto the tram tracks.
But the worse part was the near collision with an even more decrepit vehicle, more a compost heap than a car, which was being pushed across four lanes of busy traffic by a group of men causing predictable chaos

No, separate events. Yet, they highlight the need to increase studies of Near Earth Orbit (NEO) objects. There’s plenty out there we’ve yet to identify, let alone track with sufficient precision to know their orbits and whether they pose long term risks.

Gotta agree with you. Some of the video and stills look like they’re straight out of a movie.
There’s one showing contrails from the meter streaking through that looks like the ribbon from ST: Generations.
Others look like the opening sequences from Armageddon.
And there’s video showing the smoke and then the repetitive sonic booms as individual bits rain down, along with the shattering of glass and car alarms going off.
Wild stuff.

Tim Tebow, the Jets benchwarmer and one time hero to Denver Broncos fans, makes no secret of his religious beliefs. He’s gone and spoken at mega churches and other big religious gatherings before, but a planned speech at a church in Dallas should raise eyebrows.
The church is headed up by Dr. Robert Jeffress. Jeffress has made one controversial comment after another. He’s on the record saying gays shouldn’t be allowed in the military because 70% have AIDS; Islam, Mormonism and Judaism came “from the pit of hell”; Obama’s reelection “would lead to a rise of the Antichrist”; and gay activists have been attempting to conceal “the link between homosexuality and pedophilia.”
Rick Perry also got into hot water when Jeffress introduced him during Perry’s abortive campaign for the GOP nomination for president in 2011, claiming that Mormonism is a cult. He later went on to endorse Romney over Obama because he thought Obama opposed biblical principals.
Nutty doesn’t begin to touch on his belief system. Tebow shouldn’t be going within 10 miles of the guy, and yet he’s going to do so.

Eh, depends. Ocean impact, you’d have to evacuate multiple coasts for hundreds of miles. On land, you can pray it lands in a fairly rural area. Anything near a major city and you’re looking at FUBAR. Not to mention Congressional Repubs would delay any funding of any evacuation until we came up with equal spending cuts.

Actually, I’m suspicious of the claimed membership numbers already. There is no legal requirement to have the rolls audited, and there’s been some evidence that “lifetime” membership continues even into the afterlife. Add the unknown number of honorary memberships and the associate memberships that continue as long as the primary still exists. Oh, and apparently “inactive” gets counted for several years as well.
I’m basing all that on personal and family experience, by the way. Call it anecdote for now, but there have been articles that report similar events.
Bottom line, I have this suspicion that the true membership numbers are a lot smaller than people think, and the main leverage comes from it being yet another front for Monied Peoples’ Influence.

First, if the area impacted is going to be thousands of square miles we’re going to be in the category of global catastrophe - world killer.
That said, the possible impact area, even 24 hours out, is going to be even larger. There are too many variables, not least is tumbling, calving, and buffeting when it hits atmosphere.
And with that noted, you’re not evacuating a major city in 24 hours. Parts of it, sure, but not whole cities. Start with the doubters, add the procrastinators and the caretakers. Nope, not gonna happen.

Yes, should have been more clear. I don’t mean for the impact site to be that size, but that that much area would have to be evacuated due to the shockwave, debris, etc.

I’m a Giants fan but can’t help but snicker at the craziness across the way in Jets-land. Their signing of Tebow was a mistake from the outset, and all their claims of secrecy about how they would use him was just insane. Turns out their secret strategy was to essentially have him ride the pine all season long and at the moment that they would need him most, he begged out of a game, claiming an injury.
I blame that on the GM (who has since been replaced) and the coach, Rex Ryan, who’s still there despite his inability to actually coach this team over the past couple of years. He’s gotten progressively worse with each season.

But it’s not the membership that matters. I can’t find it on a short look, but a lizard here posted a link not so long ago to an article on how the NRA leadership is selected.
A panel is appointed by the current leadership which nominate members for the election slate. They will take a few names from write-ins, but mostly do their own selections. It is not atypical of NPs, by the way. But the bottom line is that it’s even less selective than the presidential elections. We the Leaders select the slate, you the members pick from the slate.

35. Teabaggers
Charges: America’s dumbest and most racist citizens finally found a cause they could all get behind that isn’t pro wrestling or NASCAR. The Lolcats of protest sign grammar, they think scare quotes actually make things scary (e.g. “Obama is a ‘communist’ “). They don’t understand that they’re duped showpieces for billionaires who threaten their freedom and prosperity far more than their beloved nemesis, Big Gubmint. And their instant escalation from complacent couch potatoes to rhetorical revolutionaries just happened to coincide with the election of a black Democrat with the middle name Hussein. My company announced recently that, as of March 1, they are changing the way we accumulate paid vacation days. Without going to deep into the math, the central takeaway is that every employee at the company will now be getting 6 fewer days of vacation time each year.
Lovely.
And to add insult to injury, the official notice about the changes indicates that “despite these changes, our policy remains competitive with those of others in our industry.”

I ended up distracting her with a rolled squash ball to get her out of the way. Luckily the other cat was on the window sill watching the local bird population at the time, so I was able to get out the door.
While fixing a quick cup of tea I made the mistake of opening the pantry door for some reason. ZIP! Two cats in the pantry (ground level is open so they go in there and play with an onion skin lying there that rattles in an amusing way.) So I just closed the door on them for a few minutes so as to do a few things undisturbed. Let them out a little before I left, which still led to cat blockade.

The nasty thing about “salary” is that it doesn’t get the same protections hourly workers get.
No, let me use correct terminology. Exempt [from overtime] employees can indeed be tagged for additional hours without pay for which non-exempt employees get paid extra.

Meant to include… one of the most basic tests is whether the employee is paid by the hour. One of the most frequent places where companies get hammered is related to their tracking of hours. If you have to punch a clock and you can get punished for leaving fifteen minutes early or taking a little extra for lunch, your company might be eligible for an NLRB wake-up call. Please notice the word “might” in there.

I’ve seen that as well. More time spent on overhead than necessary - and it detracts from getting the project done on time and on budget. That is largely where the value of middle management lies - hitting that balance of control and oversight that gets productive work done and maintains good morale in the workforce.

I’ve been blessed to have never been put on a project team attempting to do that. Then again, I’ve always been on a team in terms of split time; e.g. 50% of my hours are for the project and the rest is still supporting other tasks. And the split has to be flexible to some extent since firefighting on the non-project side is not something that can be predictable in terms of when it happens and how long it takes to fix.
And I always worked in particular areas in the project flow. So I would have a pile of work early on, it would ease off, and then a big pile would appear again right before go-live. With a bunch of variable time troubleshooting going on as well as issues arose.

Here’s a highly nuanced criticism of the drone debate
Hate Obama’s Drone War?
Blame the bleeding-heart human rights crusaders.
human rights norms have done as much to erode traditional ideas of sovereignty as have more U.S.-centric theories of counterterrorism. In fact, for all their criticism of U.S. drone policy, those in the human rights community often embrace a theory of sovereignty remarkably similar to the theory that undergirds current U.S. counterterrorism policy.
In essence, both the human rights community and the U.S. counterterrorism community increasingly view sovereignty — and the accompanying right to be free of foreign intervention — as a privilege states can earn or lose, rather than an inherent right of statehood.
….
In many ways, the big international law story of the last 70 years has been the erosion of traditional legal ideas of sovereignty. This has been driven in part by technological change and globalization: It’s one thing to embrace the principle of non-intervention when events in one state are unlikely to affect events in other states, but another thing altogether in an era in which money, viruses, chemical pollutants, and missiles can move across state borders in hours or minutes, rather than weeks or months. But international law’s embrace of human rights also represents a deep challenge to sovereignty, reflecting a shift away from the notion that what a state does inside its own borders is solely its own concern.

A cafeteria fight at Minneapolis South High School escalated into a melee involving hundreds of students Thursday, spurred by what parents and students said are growing racial tensions between Somali-American students and others.
…
While school district leaders said they didn’t know what sparked the fights, students such as Adnan Farah said they were the culmination of increasing racial tensions.
“This school is not safe for Somali students,” said Farah, a junior. “Throughout this year, there have been a lot of fights.”
Senior Guled Omar said he and other Somali-American students feel targeted at the school. “I don’t know if it’s because we’re minorities or the newest immigrant group,” he said.
Omar said that students have complained to the school district and principal about perceived discrimination, but that nothing has been done.
Ah. So “Muslims and blacks brawl” = “people who are both Muslim and black brawl with whites due to perceived racism on the part of the latter”

Link goes to some nutter site called “Creeping Sharia .com”. Yes, it’s about as racist and unhinged as you might expect.
Here’s the story from the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Food fight erupts into melee at Minneapolis South High School
A cafeteria fight at Minneapolis South High School escalated into a melee involving hundreds of students Thursday, spurred by what parents and students said are growing racial tensions between Somali-American students and others.
Police said that 200 to 300 students shoved, kicked and threw bottles at one other and that extra Minneapolis police officers were called in to break up the fighting. Three students and one staff member were taken to a hospital for medical treatment, and police said rioting and disorderly conduct charges could be filed.
“We’re very fortunate no one got seriously injured,” said police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer, adding that in 19 years, “I honestly can’t recall a [similar] situation of this magnitude.”
School district spokesman Stan Alleyne said he couldn’t comment on the students’ claims, but added that the district takes any complaints about racism seriously. “It is a safe school,” he said. Principal Cecilia Saddler did not reply to messages to comment.
Officials briefly considered canceling Friday classes, but decided instead to hold school, with some restrictions. Students will remain in their classrooms during class periods and access to the building will be limited.
“We are comfortable with the security measures that we currently have in place and we look forward to providing a normal instructional day,” the school said on its website.

Bullshit. Saying that efforts to prosecute people for human rights abuses across borders has opened the door the US to commit human rights abuses across borders is like saying that protecting national sovereignty (a right-wing wet dream) would enable the US to commit human rights abuses domestically with impunity.
Ergo, if you are in favor of national sovereignty, you are a totalitarian despot.
It’s a childish attempt, once again, to blame those pesky left-ish pro-human-rights people (they make me feel guilty so I must blame them for something!) for the stuff that right-wing warmongers do.

You know what comes to mind. Individual mandate. Heritage Foundation pimps idea for years to no avail. GOP pushes it as a way to improve health care delivery for years.
Obama takes individual and makes it central portion of PPACA as he knows single payer would never have chance of passage.
Right wing freaks out and complains that the very idea they pushed for years is now somehow unconstitutional. Moreover, they get some judges to agree with this notion and it goes to the Supreme Court, where they rule that it’s indeed constitutional but not on the assumed grounds but rather taxing power.
Nutty doesn’t begin to describe the alt-verse that the right’s been living in.

re: #321 Lidane
You should read the whole thing
By the late 1990s, the principle of non-intervention had come under sustained assault by the human rights community. The Balkan wars and the Rwandan genocide had demonstrated that non-intervention could carry a heavy moral price tag, and in 1998, when reports of Serbian “ethnic cleansing” in Kosovo began to emerge, human rights advocates urged the international community to take action to prevent a possible new genocide.
…
Commenting on the tensions between sovereignty and human rights, then-U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan asserted in 1999, “State sovereignty, in its most basic sense, is being redefined — not least by the forces of globalization and international cooperation. States are now widely understood to be instruments at the service of their peoples, and not vice versa….When we read the [U.N.] Charter today, we are more than ever conscious that its aim is to protect individual human beings, not to protect those who abuse them. The genocide in Rwanda showed us how terrible the consequences of inaction can be….But this year’s conflict in Kosovo raised equally important questions.”Those questions — initially framed mainly as questions about the legality of “humanitarian intervention” — were soon recast as questions about the rights and duties of sovereignty. In 2001 — within months of the 9/11 attacks — the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty released a report asserting that the most fundamental duty of sovereign states was the protection of their populations. “State sovereignty implies responsibility….Where a population is suffering serious harm, as a result of internal war, insurgency, repression or state failure, and the state in question is unwilling or unable to halt or avert it, the principle of non-intervention yields to the international responsibility to protect.”
It’s a train of thought I hadn’t heard before. The argument is not without merit.

FWIW, the article doesn’t say that. Nor, as far as I can see, did KT.
In fact Ms. Brooks says she thinks that prosecution of leaders, of violation of sovereignty for protection, is on the whole a good thing.
The basic point she’s making is that it appears the powers of sovereignty are in the process of being minimized if not eliminated, and wonders what we (the world) are going to put in place. That she used a provocative sub-title, and justifies it by noting the first processes of ignoring sovereignty for situations other than war were driven by humanitarian objectives, is secondary.

Troops seize 275kg of drugs near Israel-Egypt border
The Border Guard foiled a large drug smuggling operation on the Israel-Egypt border Thursday night, as part of the military’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the area.
According to a statement by the Border Guard Command, troops patrolling in the area spotted two suspects trying to cross the border fence.…Both suspects are local Bedouins known to the police. The man who was arrested was remanded to the Southern District Police’s custody.
The search of the vehicle turned up 275kg of marijuana, with an estimated street value of over NIS 1 million (roughly $270,000).
The last drug shipment seized by the border included 21kg of heroin.
Border Guard Commander Amos Yaakov lauded the troops’ resolve and professionalism.

But if the author (or editor) is going to slap a needlessly provocative subtitle on the article, then they’re going to have a hard time getting me to accept that it’s anything beyond a grade-level analysis.
Once again, I think it’s obtuse to the point of willfulness to claim that, because human rights campaigners have pushed for cross-border prosecution of the leaders of abusing movements, we can blame those campaigners for the US practice of dressing up unprovoked assaults as self-defense on the basis of fraudulent evidence.

Tebow shouldn’t be going within 10 miles of the guy, and yet he’s going to do so.

simplistically summarizing:
The force projection justification used for drones parallels the language of the Responsibility to Protect and neuters the understanding of “other states’ sovereignty”. That language was created in the UN and used for interventions, which included use of force interventions, in numerous cases. It allows for (and arguably encourages) intervention in nations unwilling or unable to act.
A critical passage snipped from the article goes:
By the late 1990s, the principle of non-intervention had come under sustained assault by the human rights community. The Balkan wars and the Rwandan genocide had demonstrated that non-intervention could carry a heavy moral price tag, and in 1998, when reports of Serbian “ethnic cleansing” in Kosovo began to emerge, human rights advocates urged the international community to take action to prevent a possible new genocide.
The United States and other NATO members responded with an aerial bombing campaign against Serbian targets within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (as it was still then called). This military action was not authorized by the Security Council, and NATO could make no plausible claim relating to state consent or self-defense. As a result, many international law experts viewed the Kosovo intervention as illegal — or, at best, “extra-legal.” Nevertheless, it was generally viewed as morally legitimate, and it received what amounted to retrospective endorsement in later Security Council resolutions.

Subjugation of females and anyone they feel is inferior. They both have a script for how the world should be ordered and will work to see it enacted.

Chavez Using Breathing Tube as Venezuela Publishes Photos
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is using a breathing tube that makes it difficult for him to speak, Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said today as he released the first images of the cancer-stricken leader since Dec. 10.
Chavez, 58, was pictured in four photos broadcast on national television with two of his daughters at his bedside in Havana reading yesterday’s edition of Cuban newspaper Granma. The former paratrooper is conscious and has control of his “intellectual capacities,” Villegas said.
“A respiratory infection that arose after surgery has been controlled,” Villegas said. “A breathing insufficiency remains, and Chavez is using a tracheal tube which makes it difficult to speak.”

That is kind of interesting. The article touches on some of the usual hacker forums but I’ve always wondered how much crossover there is with foreign government hackers and Anon. Maybe Anon is weak sauce compared with the government backed hackers but it seems to me that Anon could be a useful network for them.

Republicans want to reduce the amount of sex education and birth control available, thus reducing the advances that have been made in female education and protection in the past century.
Republicans are in favor of harsh penalties, including the death penalty, for criminal behavior.
Republicans are in favor of repealing legislation that protects the (mostly female) victims of domestic abuse.

That little fucker is moving!
They’ve already put an estimated value on it.
Deep Space Industries says asteroid 2012 DA14 worth $195 billion
Prospective asteroid miners Deep Space Industries say asteroid 2012 DA14 set to brush past Earth on Friday may be worth $195 billion. An official of the company said the asteroid may harbor $65 billion of recoverable water and $130 billion in metals
Digital Journal reports that 2012 DA14 will brush past Earth on Friday at a distance of 17,200 miles (27,000 kilometers), making the closest approach to Earth by any body of its kind since astronomers began watching and keeping records.
Space.com reports that Deep Space Industries, however, admitted that the estimate of “$65 billion of recoverable water and $130 billion in metals” is just an optimistic guess because 2012 DA14’s composition has not been ascertained. Besides, its estimated size is based only on the rock’s brightness.
Deep Space’s optimistic “guess” has been disputed.

OK, so I read that argument as:
“Because human rights campaigners pushed for the use of force against leaders of abusing movements, irresponsible governments have been able to use the legal apparatus in place as cover for unprovoked assaults. Therefore, blame human rights campaigners for these unprovoked assaults.”
Is that about it?
No. That last sentence should be, “Therefore, blame human rights campaigners for the mechanism by which these unprovoked assaults are justified.”
You seem to be straining at the subtitle. It seems to be provoking the same sort of behavior KT shows when “Occupy” is mentioned. I’m tired of defending an article you haven’t read, that I didn’t write, against attacks that claim it is saying what it doesn’t say.
It is an article that lays out the fact that sovereignty as we understand it is going away, that the primary cause of this is the humanitarian actions that allow intervention, and that the Bush and Obama administrations have been using the language underlying that to allow their drone actions. She concludes by wondering what we will wind up putting in place given this erosion of the principle of sovereignty.
That’s it. It uses a provocative sub-title for the same reason most people do so - as a tool to draw in readers, with a passing relation to accurate reflection of what’s in the article.
And the claim of the article, which has basis in truth whether liked or not, is that because the law has been weakened the actions are ‘legal’ — and the people who weakened those laws were not the war-mongers.

re: #350 Gus
He did call for more drilling of oil and gas to combat climate change in the SOTU. Imagine making a comment like that? Of course that could mean people would just nod in agreement.
Um, hang on. That’s not what he said. Here’s the segment about oil and gas exploration:
Nowhere is the promise of innovation greater than in American-made energy. Over the last three years, we’ve opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration, and tonight, I’m directing my Administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore oil and gas resources. Right now, American oil production is the highest that it’s been in eight years. That’s right – eight years. Not only that – last year, we relied less on foreign oil than in any of the past sixteen years.
But with only 2 percent of the world’s oil reserves, oil isn’t enough. This country needs an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy – a strategy that’s cleaner, cheaper, and full of new jobs.
We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly one hundred years, and my Administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy. Experts believe this will support more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. And I’m requiring all companies that drill for gas on public lands to disclose the chemicals they use. America will develop this resource without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk.
This was about American energy policy, not about climate change specifically. And it’s definitely not just a “drill baby drill” approach.

From the fevered imagination of Max Blumenthal: How law enforcement and media covered up the plan to burn Christopher Dorner alive
“Burners,” or military grade incendiary grenades, are very likely among the items passed down from the U.S. army to local police outfits like the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department. The “burner” of choice for the modern American soldier is the AN-M14 TH3. It is a hand held grenade comprised of a thermite mixture that rapidly converts to molten iron when it is thrown, burning at a temperature of 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to burn through a half inch steel plate or bring an engine block to a boil. It can also produce enough heat to set off unloaded ammunition, which would explain why the ammo inside Dorner’s hideout was popping.
If the San Bernardino Sheriffs employed the AN-M14 TH3 or something like it against Dorner – and it appears they did – they have good reason to attempt to cover their actions up. Without even a token attempt to establish communication with the suspect, who was, to be sure, a wanted killer hell-bent on murdering cops, they attacked him with what was likely a military grade weapon designed to destroy fortified structures. By burning Dorner alive, then misleading and deceiving the public about the operation, the sheriffs may have validated the rogue ex-cop’s sharpest indictments of the culture of American law enforcement.

Almost ten years ago now, we had to homeschool our daughter for a while. There were several homeschooling groups around, but we wound up joining none of them as they were almost all of that flavor. Evolution, history, and a number of “soft” sciences were severely constrained. Oh, and there were works of literature that were forbidden - no SF and with certain exceptions no fantasy as an example.
Some of them had informal rules about what could be taught by gender. “Oh, we don’t do algebra for the girls till later. They’re not going to need it,” was one that sticks to my mind even now.
Yes, the dominionists are there and while they are not as bad as their middle eastern equivalents at this time it is not from lack of desire.

I got my first flu shot ever this year because so many of my co-workers and friends seemed to be getting sick, plus I’d gone to Vegas for CES and didn’t want to take any chances. I decided that a day or two of discomfort from the shot > ending up in the ER and with a script for Tamiflu.
I’ll probably end up getting any boosters and vaccines that are recommnded just because of all the anti-vax retards refusing to get shots for their kids.
