Agile/scrum is a great thing, if your project fits the profile. The problem our current client is having is, they’re trying to shoehorn all of their current projects into Agile projects, and some of them, it just ain’t working.

Ultrasound bill a ‘priority’ for anti-abortion lawmakers
The Wisconsin Capitol is a friendly place right now for those who oppose abortion.
That’s the message Wisconsin Right to Life Legislative Conference attendees repeatedly heard Tuesday from the state’s top two Republican lawmakers, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos.
“We are in a very good place in Wisconsin,” Vos said. “We have a pro-life Legislature, pro-life governor in Scott Walker and a pro-life attorney general (J.B. Van Hollen). We can all wrap our arms around this agenda.”
And it sounds like the first bill to get a warm reception from Republicans will be what’s being dubbed the “Woman’s Right to Know her Unborn Child Act,” also being termed the “ultrasound bill” by pro-choice forces.
The bill would require a woman seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound and be informed of what is visible on the monitoring screen — although the woman would not be forced to look at the image.
“This bill is a priority,” Fitzgerald said. “It is long overdue.”

Today, United Wisconsin calls on Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack to denounce inflammatory remarks made by Senator Ron Johnson at a Jefferson County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner, where the two were both among the featured speakers.
Johnson’s speech, riddled with extreme partisan rhetoric, went as far as calling political opponents “Marxists” and referring to their positions as a “cavity [that] is turning into an abscess that’s now infecting the body.” Johnson told his audience, “We are up against a strategy that is taking place by liberals, progressives, Democrats, whatever they call themselves nowadays, Socialists, Marxists.”
Sharing the stage with Johnson was incumbent Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack, who is currently seeking another ten-year term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

At a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Thursday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) asked the nation’s top financial regulators why Wall Street firms who broke the law were not taken to trial.
“We face some very special issues with big financial institutions,” she said. “If they can break the law and drag in billions and billions in profits, and then turn around and settle — paying out of those profits — they don’t have much incentive to follow the law. It is also the case that every time there is a settlement and not a trial, we didn’t have those days and days and days of testimony about what those financial institutions had been up to.”
Warren asked how tough the financial regulators were and questioned them about the last time a major Wall Street firm had been put on trial.

Simple answer in two parts, Liz:
1. Because your party, like mine, does not bite its paymaster. Wall Street pays the campaign bills that are incurred keeping politicians in power.
But primarily,
2. Because ‘Too Big to Fail’ is also ‘Too Big to Jail.’ You can’t topple the top leadership of that many large banks without one or more of them falling apart, and the fall of such a bank tips the economy back into recession. Most people, angry about the banks though they are, would rather let crooks get away with it than risk losing their jobs in a recession. It’s possible to call that cowardly, but it’s a choice, and it’s the choice the public tends to make.

Like I was saying earlier today, the only way to cap off this story is to hear Carnival, in order to recap the costs of repairs and sanitation that are no doubt going to be incurred just to make the ship seaworthy again, trying to send bills to passengers for damage to their rooms. You just know there’s some exec at Carnival thinking “There’s no way I’m giving up my plans for a new yacht just to cover these costs.”

I disagree, as in completely. If the Feds picked one or two particularly egregious assholes who actually broke the law and made an example out of them by charging them it would not send the economy into a tailspin. I wrote one of the two appendices that my advisor was like oh, by the way… today. The second needs me to refresh my memory on some of the technical aspects (because I did this 6 years ago and it’s a whole lot harder to publish negative results so we never did) so I guess I will stop by the office on Saturday. :(

Also, my advisor is in the geology department. Which is really the larger determining factor. I am somewhat field ambivalent. My bachelor’s is chemistry, my master’s materials science, and Ph.D. in geology.

As for the fucked up cruise, I manage fire protection projects and write specs for a really big corporation and there is no good explanation for how a fire in an engine area was not extinguished in a matter of seconds by a special hazard system. Yeah everyone can mock how it was no biggie and there are worse problems in the world like malaria and cancer but really, that this happened tells me that management of that cruise line is tee totally fucked up.

Possibly even if done very smartly. Lots of chaotic elements would be in play and it would be possible for the government people involved to make literally all the right moves, only to see things go sideways when stuff they had no way of knowing about walks in out of left field.

I live on a hill, and maybe once every couple months I’m awoken by a low-flying jet or a really heavy quarry or logging truck going by. And so consciousness returns to a deep roar and a vibrations throughout my body. It takes a couple seconds to fully wake up, and push the panicked near certainty that I’m moments from being snuffed out in some kind of nuclear armageddon.
So I doubt I’d deal particularly well with experiencing a similar meteorite explosion to what’s being reported here :P.

Moscow is a city where you can stand on the corner and flag down a random vehicle and agree on a price for the driver to take you where you want to go. There are professional taxis in the city but they mostly go to and from the airports and tourist hotels.
Also Moscow=major gridlock, just from the way the city is laid out, and more vehicles than it can accommodate.

It was a tiny rusty Lada (Moscow only seemed to have tiny rusty cars or giant pimped-out SUVs , yeah it’s a broad brush I’m painting with, I know - I wasn’t there long and my memories are impressionistic)
We weren’t keen on the way the crapmobile swerved under braking, at one point across another traffic lane and onto the tram tracks.
But the worse part was the near collision with an even more decrepit vehicle, more a compost heap than a car, which was being pushed across four lanes of busy traffic by a group of men causing predictable chaos

Gotta agree with you. Some of the video and stills look like they’re straight out of a movie.
There’s one showing contrails from the meter streaking through that looks like the ribbon from ST: Generations.
Others look like the opening sequences from Armageddon.
And there’s video showing the smoke and then the repetitive sonic booms as individual bits rain down, along with the shattering of glass and car alarms going off.

Eh, depends. Ocean impact, you’d have to evacuate multiple coasts for hundreds of miles. On land, you can pray it lands in a fairly rural area. Anything near a major city and you’re looking at FUBAR. Actually, I’m suspicious of the claimed membership numbers already. There is no legal requirement to have the rolls audited, and there’s been some evidence that “lifetime” membership continues even into the afterlife. Add the unknown number of honorary memberships and the associate memberships that continue as long as the primary still exists. Oh, and apparently “inactive” gets counted for several years as well.
I’m basing all that on personal and family experience, by the way. Call it anecdote for now, but there have been articles that report similar events.
Bottom line, I have this suspicion that the true membership numbers are a lot smaller than people think, and the main leverage comes from it being yet another front for Monied Peoples’ Influence.

That said, the possible impact area, even 24 hours out, is going to be even larger. There are too many variables, not least is tumbling, calving, and buffeting when it hits atmosphere.
And with that noted, you’re not evacuating a major city in 24 hours. Parts of it, sure, but not whole cities. Start with the doubters, add the procrastinators and the caretakers. Nope, not gonna happen.

But it’s not the membership that matters. I can’t find it on a short look, but a lizard here posted a link not so long ago to an article on how the NRA leadership is selected.
A panel is appointed by the current leadership which nominate members for the election slate. They will take a few names from write-ins, but mostly do their own selections. It is not atypical of NPs, by the way. But the bottom line is that it’s even less selective than the presidential elections. We the Leaders select the slate, you the members pick from the slate.

My company announced recently that, as of March 1, they are changing the way we accumulate paid vacation days. Without going to deep into the math, the central takeaway is that every employee at the company will now be getting 6 fewer days of vacation time each year.
Lovely.
And to add insult to injury, the official notice about the changes indicates that “despite these changes, our policy remains competitive with those of others in our industry.”
Oh, ok so just because other companies are yanking benefits from workers you figure “what the heck, let’s do that too!”. As if being noted for treating your employees BETTER than other companies would be such a terrible thing.

I ended up distracting her with a rolled squash ball to get her out of the way. Luckily the other cat was on the window sill watching the local bird population at the time, so I was able to get out the door.
While fixing a quick cup of tea I made the mistake of opening the pantry door for some reason. ZIP! Two cats in the pantry (ground level is open so they go in there and play with an onion skin lying there that rattles in an amusing way.) So I just closed the door on them for a few minutes so as to do a few things undisturbed. Let them out a little before I left, which still led to cat blockade.

No, let me use correct terminology. Exempt [from overtime] employees can indeed be tagged for additional hours without pay for which non-exempt employees get paid extra.
A lot of nasty fighting, abuse, and gamesmanship goes on in declaring employees exempt from overtime.

Meant to include… one of the most basic tests is whether the employee is paid by the hour. One of the most frequent places where companies get hammered is related to their tracking of hours. If you have to punch a clock and you can get punished for leaving fifteen minutes early or taking a little extra for lunch, your company might be eligible for an NLRB wake-up call. Please notice the word “might” in there.

I’ve seen that as well. More time spent on overhead than necessary - and it detracts from getting the project done on time and on budget. I’ve been blessed to have never been put on a project team attempting to do that. Then again, I’ve always been on a team in terms of split time; e.g. 50% of my hours are for the project and the rest is still supporting other tasks. And the split has to be flexible to some extent since firefighting on the non-project side is not something that can be predictable in terms of when it happens and how long it takes to fix.
And I always worked in particular areas in the project flow. So I would have a pile of work early on, it would ease off, and then a big pile would appear again right before go-live. With a bunch of variable time troubleshooting going on as well as issues arose.

Obama takes individual and makes it central portion of PPACA as he knows single payer would never have chance of passage.
Right wing freaks out and complains that the very idea they pushed for years is now somehow unconstitutional. Moreover, they get some judges to agree with this notion and it goes to the Supreme Court, where they rule that it’s indeed constitutional but not on the assumed grounds but rather taxing power.
Nutty doesn’t begin to describe the alt-verse that the right’s been living in.

The basic point she’s making is that it appears the powers of sovereignty are in the process of being minimized if not eliminated, and wonders what we (the world) are going to put in place. That she used a provocative sub-title, and justifies it by noting the first processes of ignoring sovereignty for situations other than war were driven by humanitarian objectives, is secondary.

Troops seize 275kg of drugs near Israel-Egypt border
The Border Guard foiled a large drug smuggling operation on the Israel-Egypt border Thursday night, as part of the military’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the area.

Nutty doesn’t begin to touch on his belief system. Tebow shouldn’t be going within 10 miles of the guy, and yet he’s going to do so.
And people around here were pissed when the Eagles signed Andy Reid. Yeesh.

I know people who’ve worked in the Pakistani tribal areas. It’s a fucking tragedy going on there, on both sides. But dropping bombs on people rarely solves problems long term in these kinds of situations (see the Philippines for the latest example of how peace may or may not come about).
Finally, people who trot out the “national security” argument need to explain why they trust the same people who lied to them about Iraq, to give them the truth on this occasion.

simplistically summarizing:
The force projection justification used for drones parallels the language of the Responsibility to Protect and neuters the understanding of “other states’ sovereignty”. That language was created in the UN and used for interventions, which included use of force interventions, in numerous cases. It allows for (and arguably encourages) intervention in nations unwilling or unable to act.
A critical passage snipped from the article goes:

The United States and other NATO members responded with an aerial bombing campaign against Serbian targets within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (as it was still then called). As a result, many international law experts viewed the Kosovo intervention as illegal — or, at best, “extra-legal.” Nevertheless, it was generally viewed as morally legitimate, and it received what amounted to retrospective endorsement in later Security Council resolutions.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is using a breathing tube that makes it difficult for him to speak, Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said today as he released the first images of the cancer-stricken leader since Dec. 10.
Chavez, 58, was pictured in four photos broadcast on national television with two of his daughters at his bedside in Havana reading yesterday’s edition of Cuban newspaper Granma. The former paratrooper is conscious and has control of his “intellectual capacities,” Villegas said.

Maybe Anon is weak sauce compared with the government backed hackers but it seems to me that Anon could be a useful network for them.

Republicans are in favor of harsh penalties, including the death penalty, for criminal behavior.
Republicans are in favor of repealing legislation that protects the (mostly female) victims of domestic abuse.

I believe they prefer to use gentler language than that, and instead of gunning down girls they just want to shame them into being homemakers, three strikes laws for criminals no matter how petty, and the bible says a woman should serve her master…so in a way, yes.

You seem to be straining at the subtitle. It seems to be provoking the same sort of behavior KT shows when “Occupy” is mentioned. I’m tired of defending an article you haven’t read, that I didn’t write, against attacks that claim it is saying what it doesn’t say.
It is an article that lays out the fact that sovereignty as we understand it is going away, that the primary cause of this is the humanitarian actions that allow intervention, and that the Bush and Obama administrations have been using the language underlying that to allow their drone actions. She concludes by wondering what we will wind up putting in place given this erosion of the principle of sovereignty.
That’s it. It uses a provocative sub-title for the same reason most people do so - as a tool to draw in readers, with a passing relation to accurate reflection of what’s in the article.
And the claim of the article, which has basis in truth whether liked or not, is that because the law has been weakened the actions are ‘legal’ — and the people who weakened those laws were not the war-mongers.

It is a hand held grenade comprised of a thermite mixture that rapidly converts to molten iron when it is thrown, burning at a temperature of 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to burn through a half inch steel plate or bring an engine block to a boil. It can also produce enough heat to set off unloaded ammunition, which would explain why the ammo inside Dorner’s hideout was popping.
If the San Bernardino Sheriffs employed the AN-M14 TH3 or something like it against Dorner – and it appears they did – they have good reason to attempt to cover their actions up. Without even a token attempt to establish communication with the suspect, who was, to be sure, a wanted killer hell-bent on murdering cops, they attacked him with what was likely a military grade weapon designed to destroy fortified structures. By burning Dorner alive, then misleading and deceiving the public about the operation, the sheriffs may have validated the rogue ex-cop’s sharpest indictments of the culture of American law enforcement.

Almost ten years ago now, we had to homeschool our daughter for a while. There were several homeschooling groups around, but we wound up joining none of them as they were almost all of that flavor. Evolution, history, and a number of “soft” sciences were severely constrained. Oh, and there were works of literature that were forbidden - no SF and with certain exceptions no fantasy as an example.
Some of them had informal rules about what could be taught by gender. “Oh, we don’t do algebra for the girls till later. They’re not going to need it,” was one that sticks to my mind even now.
Yes, the dominionists are there and while they are not as bad as their middle eastern equivalents at this time it is not from lack of desire.

Hackers dumped email addresses, password MD5 hashes and salts across 93 Pastebin posts.

I got my first flu shot ever this year because so many of my co-workers and friends seemed to be getting sick, plus I’d gone to Vegas for CES and didn’t want to take any chances. I decided that a day or two of discomfort from the shot > ending up in the ER and with a script for Tamiflu.
I’ll probably end up getting any boosters and vaccines that are recommnded just because of all the anti-vax retards refusing to get shots for their kids.
