Rand Paul on Glenn Beck Show: “Something Really Depraved Is Rising in the Country”

Fear-mongering taken to the next level
Wingnuts • Views: 32,459

“I think that our country needs a spiritual cleansing. I really think we need a revival in this country — and I do need your prayers and I do need the strength to go on with this, because this isn’t always easy.

[…]

I think our country’s problems are deeper than political — that we need spiritual leaders to come forward. We need something beyond just the politics of the day and, you know, I see it everywhere — something really depraved is rising in the country.”

When asked about the sequester budget cuts that will go into effect on March 1, Paul said even though everyone dislikes it because it cuts in every area of the budget, it’s probably a better cut than what Congress could come up with.

Paul said, “We’d be fools to get rid of this now, ‘cause we’ll not get anything better that the President would sign.”

Dear Rand:

Please fuck off. There is not a “spiritual” problem in this country. There is a problem with folks like you who reject the social contract implicit in both the preamble to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The Constitution is a secular, not religious, document.

You sir, are an ignorant idiot. The best favor you could do for America is walk in front of a train.

Fools dragging us all over the falls.

Paul’s of the “We have to destroy the country to save it” persuasion, like his daddy was. And considering how this apple didn’t fall far from the tree, he probably also sees the sequester as a great way to scale back “American imperialism.”

There’s something deeply amusing about a devotee of Ayn Rand calling for a “spiritual cleansing.” It’s a might like Rush Limbaugh calling for civility in the media.

Purgatory is a very Catholic concept, like Limbo. Being a retired mackerel snapper, I’m not real clear on the theology of them right now.

OT from a post WAY downthread: (redacted for more updated info)

That was one significant bolide today over Chelyabinsk. The shockwave occurred between 2 and 2 and 1/2 minutes after the initial breakup, indicating an altitude of between 125,00 and 150,00 feet. The contrail itself was around two hundred and fifty miles long. (perspective is an odd thing, yes?).

Over a million square feet of glass was shattered in the city. The object was approximately 50 feet in diameter and was probably a chondroid (most incoming objects are), but we can hope for a Palasite body (beautiful stuff).

The altitude of the the breakup caused most of the injuries. People went to the windows to see what the bright light was and were staring at the contrail when the windows blew in. Lots of opthalmic surgeons will be really busy the next few days. Some victims have been airlifted to hospitals in Moscow and St. Pete.

The coincidence of this object, entering the atmosphere at a completely different angle and a much greater speed (30 miles per second!) than the fly-by asteroid which missed us by 17,000 miles today was just that; a coincidence. But the timing indicates that there are, as the Bard wrote, “more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

A fine example of “real world” Earth Science was displayed today. NASA is looking for really big bodies. If this object had come in vertically over LA today, it would have stomped the city into a bloody stain.

It would depend on where it hit. If it hit near the ocean, for example, the San Fernando Valley would likely survive, as the Hollywood Hills would shield it from the blast wave. That was, after all, how parts of Nagasaki survived the nuclear strike on that city in August 1945.

It may not have been as spectacular as the space rock that streaked across the skies above Russia late Thursday, but the Bay Area’s close encounter with a meteor Friday night was drawing its own attention on social networks.

Comments on Twitter indicated the object that flashed across the horizon around 8 p.m. was blue in color and visible from the Peninsula to at least the eastern reaches of Contra Costa County and as far away as Red Bluff.

The story linked in #42 refers to an event that happened yesterday, comparing it to last October’s meteor and denying that it has anything to do with the close-approaching asteroid - which, as we know, happened yesterday and not 4 months ago.

It seems clear to me that that story refers to an event that occurred yesterday. Otherwise there’d be no point in any of the following:

It comes on the same night a 150-foot-wide asteroid was due to come within 17,200 miles of Earth. It was not immediately clear if the fireball had any connection to the asteroid.

He said it was likely smaller than another meteor that landed in the Bay Area in October, which caused a loud sonic boom as it fell, breaking apart and spreading rocks, called meteorites, in the North Bay.

It also happened about 24 hours after a huge meteorite fell from the skies over Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, resulting in a powerful blast that injured nearly 1,000 people and shattered windows across the area.

I really think you saw two different articles, the first one being this.

ETA: especially since that story has the exact headline and dateline that you quoted in #45.

Scientists say giant tin of white paint more use against asteroid hit

Reliable warning of smaller objects coming our way is tricky - there are just too many.

“The Earth gets hit all the time,” said Dr Lewis. “The solar system is quite literally littered with these objects.”

Objects of DA14’s size are far rarer, however. The last one known to hit the planet was the Tunguska event in 1908.

“That caused the trees to flatten in an area equivalent to the inside of the M25,” said Dr Lewis.

With a year’s warning, and today’s technology, what realistically could we do to avoid that?

“Evacuate.”

Scott Walker’s transportation budget might include sale of state power plants

Gov. Scott Walker is seeking to sell off hundreds of millions of dollars in power plants or other state assets to help pay some of the borrowing he is proposing as part of his two-year $6.4 billion transportation plan unveiled Friday.

The controversial move to sell the 37 power and heating plants - already being outlined to lawmakers - would, if it happened, help the Republican governor and the state keep on schedule with key Milwaukee area projects such as the Zoo Interchange and Hoan Bridge. The move could also have the unexpected effect of linking the prices paid by some utility customers to the financing of the state’s road system.

Bonds for the road work would go through even if the state property was not ultimately sold.

Scott Walker’s transportation budget might include sale of state power plants

A state is better suited to building roads than running power plants. And by proposing infrastructure upgrades Scott Walker is taking action at a time when Obama just proposed something similar, thus avoiding the charge of being a do nothing.

re: #35 austin_blue

Just learned something new today…if I see a bright flash, get far away from windows and anything else that can be blown over onto me.

What’s up with Salon? They are playing the victim card for Dorner.

Understanding Christopher Dorner

Bradley Manning: imprisoned, tortured. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo: lost her career at the Environmental Protection Agency. Karen Silkwood: died in a suspicious car accident. Gary Webb and Deborah Jeane Palfrey: committed suicide, the former having lost his career, the latter under threat of a 55-year prison sentence. Adrian Schoolcraft: involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric ward.

This isn’t a country that necessarily holds whistleblowers in the highest regard.

…Dorner’s reaction is partly rooted in a corrosive version of American masculinity — his response to institutional corruption is uniquely Jack Bauer and John Wayne. Gratuitous violence included. Dorner is a wholesale product of a society gone mad on racism and war, of a state that aggressively punishes dissent, of an intellectual milieu where telling the truth has become a dangerous act. There was no internal institutional outlet for him to address injustices against him: the blue line prevented that.

…In Dorner’s case, the allegory of life to a furnace takes literal weight — he has died, consumed by fire. The police will celebrate, the chorus will quiet, the lives of his victims mourned. It is unlikely that the fire that burned away Dorner will burn away any illusion: this is unfortunate, and disturbing. His allegations will be dismissed as the rantings of a lunatic, things will return to normal. Until the fire, next time.

In other words its not his fault. Im sure the families of the people he murdered share a different view.

Russian nuclear bombers intercepted near Guam

Two Russian bombers, capable of carrying nuclear cruise missiles, circled the U.S. island of Guam in the Western Pacific this week, U.S. military officials told NBC News. U.S. Air Force F-15 jets scrambled from Andersen Air Force Base on Guam to intercept the bombers.

According to one military official, the Russian Bear bombers remained in international airspace, the encounter between the U.S. and Russian aircraft “stayed professional” and there was no incident. The official said it’s impossible to determine whether the Russian bombers carried any nuclear weapons.

According to KTLA in Los Angeles, Dorner’s mother issued a statement that read in part: “It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we express our deepest sympathies and condolences to anyone that suffered losses or injuries resulting from Christopher’s actions.” They said it continued: “We do not condone Christopher’s actions.”

I am a big fan of Charles Blow. And the editorial is spot on.

Here’s my thing about Dorner vs LAPD. Dorner is absolutely the wrong person to illustrate the problems with the LAPD. For one thing, he was not right in the head. For another, he was all about self-interest: ‘clearing his name’, revenge, retribution. For another, he was part of the LAPD.

But there will never be a really great spokesperson for reform of the LAPD. Rodney King? He was a symbol, not much more. The victims of the LAPD are usually criminals and suspects, and often poor and poorly educated. They don’t pick on college professors and pundits. Somehow, the reform must happen anyway. I would hope for some leadership from Villaraigosa, but I don’t know if it will come, and he’s not going to be in that office much longer..

They will let their hatred of the LAPD cloud their perceptions and they will buy into whatever conspiracy makes the cops look the worst.

There are Breivik fans, and Tim McVeigh fans, and Charles Manson fans, for fuck’s sake. This isn’t new. The difference is one of influence. A few random moonbats and imbeciles saying they think Dorner was a hero are not a surprise. If a bunch of LA politicians were to suddenly start empathizing with Dorner, OTOH, that would be a problem.

There also are people who are disaffected with the police because their only interactions with them are negative. The stop and frisk law here in New York, which is hugely targeted against young black men, may be successful in finding drugs and guns, but the vast majority of the stops produce nothing— except, of course, a moment of humiliation and shame for a young black man. Doing shit like that, doing the ‘infiltration’ of the mosques, all these things break the bond of trust between police and citizens.

I am not blaming the police as a whole for these tactics, and most of them are understandable if ill-advised. It is the political level that decides tactics like this, and it really is important to remember the average officer, detective, lieutenant has no influence on this shit and so criticizing them for it next to useless.

But things like this hurt the trust of the police— as does unloading on two pickups that bore a passing resemblance to Dorner’s, as does changing the story rapidly about what happened during one of those incidents. I don’t think it’s fair or right for people to stop trusting the police due to things like this, but it is going to happen. The relationship between police and citizens is a consensual one; police cannot police without the willing acceptance of the policed, and when that breaks down, it’s bad for everyone.

I guess some people have developed their own purity test over the Dorner case. When did it become a horrible left wing moonbat thing to try to understand the reasons for criminal behavior?

Go ahead, now, and accuse me of “sympathizing” with Dorner.

All I see in that article are reasons they think are responsible for his actions other than calling him what he really is… a mass murderer. This is a common theme on the right, at least here, that any attempt on understanding the reasons behind deviant behaviour (as in deviates from what we accept as ‘normal’) is an effort to except the person from personal responsibility for those actions.

What the goddamned fuck was that?

196 Charles Johnson  Sat, Feb 16, 2013 9:26:50am

Quote from that horrible moonbat Salon article:

The initial response to the Dorner phenomena — like most phenomena involving madmen — has been to isolate it as an individual event, extrinsic to our society. Why does he hate us? Indeed, the presentation of most criminality is as something monstrous. This formulation ignores something crucial: it is impossible to arbitrarily separate some parts of our lives from the others. It is as foolish to presume that criminality is monstrous as it is to presume that the leg operates independently of the hip.

And so the Dorner incident, like all incidents involving madmen, requires us to consider the madness that structures life in America.

Baldwin’s midcentury injunction still holds today, absent the male normativity: we do need to take a hard look at ourselves. Why has Dorner attracted such support online, especially in communities of color? Why have two more LAPD officers, at great risk, come forward to address the free-flowing racism that characterizes their worklife? The questions we might ask will be fraught with peril, but there could be great positives: one of the key things that this experience has exposed is that a broader social consideration of what it means to live life ethically is gravely absent.

In Dorner’s case, the allegory of life to a furnace takes literal weight — he has died, consumed by fire.

What he describes in that last paragraph is exactly what I see going on here.

Um. If the Russians were going to dispatch aircraft with nuclear weapons on board they would not use Tu-95s. That plane is older than I am.

They’d probably use Tu-22Ms (Backfires) if they were going to perform a nuclear strike. That plane is capable of high Mach numbers so it could, possibly, strike before a response could be launched.

Probably the flight was a recon and response test. I’m sure our side does much the same thing.

I don’t suspect the policy of any police force was to kill Dorner by lighting the building on fire. However, cops there (maybe of multiple jurisdictions) probably called for the ‘burner’ hoping it would flush him out and, if it burnt him to a crisp, oh well. Not making excuses despite the training and professionalism, I’m sure they were jacked up and hoping to put an end to the whole deal.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning and criticizing the deployment of ‘burners’ or asking if it really is a policy, and if so, changing it. With no hostages, it’s reasonable to question a waiting posture as the cabin was surrounded. In that case, time was on the side of the cops.

There is no question the dude is deranged and was a major threat. But we have due process. Whether we want it or not, we have it.

You folks who think the Salon article is just horribly bad support for Christopher Dorner had better not ever read a book by James Baldwin — your heads would explode.

There is a group out there that dismisses psychological research as nothing more than fanciful nonsense, shown to be false by common sense and traditional views. That most of the research tells us our common sense is frequently wrong, especially when used to assume reasons for our actions makes it all the more difficult to accept.

The only conclusion that can be made by those invested in their own beliefs is that psychology, represented by some generic liberal plan to blame parents, society, circumstances, whatever can be blamed other than the human being considered is done to shift blame. That we do the research, not to assign blame, but to find ways of recognizing the mental pathways to specific actions in order to minimize deviant behaviour doesn’t enter their thought.

They tend to rely on punishment as a deterrent where liberals look to correcting fundamental causes as a method to prevent behaviours.

It’s entirely plausible that despite Dorner’s craziness the LAPD does actually have problems. We cannot get away from the reality that he killed 4 people and created terror and havoc in a major metropolitan region. But we cannot get away from the potential that Dorner pointed out some real issues with the LAPD. It may have been sour grapes, or it may not have been.

The phrase ‘we stand with Christopher Dorner’ is still a bad one to use and is only going to confuse the issue.

I agree, but it’s just flat wrong to say they’re supporting Dorner, regardless of the name. They’re very clear on that.

Agree, some are saying he had a choice of suicide, or burning. He also had a third choice to leave the cabin, hands up, white flag surrender.
He made his choice and I have no sympathy whatsoever for him.

However, this whole case deserves some examination and discussion

I’ve said very clearly more than once now that I have no sympathy for Dorner, either. His own murderous choices led him to that cabin.

And I’ll bet that most of the people being accused of “supporting” Dorner feel the same way. Yes, there are a few idiots who’ve made him into a hero in their own minds — a tiny, tiny, minority on the far fringe.

Sweet jeebus. Scientists are raising the estimates on the size of the meteoroid and the potential energy from hurtling through the skies over Russia.

The new estimates, based on additional readings from a sensor network built to detect nuclear blasts, suggest the meteor released the energy equivalent of nearly 500 kilotons of TNT. That’s about 30 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

Experts have been assessing the level of the meteor explosion using a network of infrasound sensors that were set up under the terms of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty to check for changes in atmospheric pressure caused by nuclear blasts. “These new estimates were generated using new data that had been collected by five additional infrasound stations located around the world — the first recording of the event being in Alaska, over 6,500 kilometers away from Chelyabinsk,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a statement.

NASA now says the Chelyabinsk object must have been about 55 feet wide (17 meters wide) with a mass of 10,000 tons before it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

“We would expect an event of this magnitude to occur once every 100 years on average,”Paul Chodas of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office said in the statement. “When you have a fireball of this size, we would expect a large number of meteorites to reach the surface, and in this case there were probably some large ones.”

Searchers have been focusing on a frozen lake about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Chelyabinsk, where they suspect meteorite fragments made a 20-foot-wide (6-meter-wide) hole in the ice. Divers explored the bottom of the lake on Saturday but have found nothing so far, according to Russian news reports.

And as far as I’ve seen, none here at LGF. That’s what sticks in my craw about this. Like I said, OWS II.

Using that phrase is going to hurt them. How hard would it be for them to say “we stand against the abuses of the LAPD which resulted in etc.” because they sure weren’t (and aren’t) going to benefit by “standing” with him.

249 Mattand  Sat, Feb 16, 2013 10:14:27am

Just read the article; twice, actually, to make sure I didn’t miss something.

I can see why it’s yanking people’s chains. It’s not heavy on “OMFG, what a horrible monster!” Taking that tone, it’s easy to see how people would think it skirts the edge of almost absolving Dorner for his actions.

I think the big problem is that the article brings up the question of “Why did he do this?”, which is hard to discuss without engaging the LAPD’s abysmal race relations record. This is even more uncomfortable given the murder victims were either cops or innocent people.

Dorner was a cold-blooded murderer, pure and simple. I’m sorry that he chose the path he did, given the destruction of people’s lives and families it caused. However, it’s brought to the forefront a cripplingly divisive issue in the nation’s second largest police force. That needs to be addressed.

That would be a little unwieldly on a bumper sticker. But I get your point.

Yes, and we see that often. Usually in a historical context. Look at Bonnie and Clyde…they have been made out as folk heroes, even though they killed many cops and innocent people. The bad guy is the one who blew the whistle.
But even at the time, there were people rooting for them. Why? It was in the middle of the depression when social ills were rampant.

LOL, it took me half-an-hour and 2 drafts to write that and 5 minutes to decide whether I should even post it. And the whole time I’m thinking “Someone will accuse me of siding with Dorner!”

And so we’re all clear, I saw Charles’s sarc tag.

Naming things is hard, but I agree, it’s a poor choice - because it lets people smear them as “supporting a murderer” when their statement of purpose makes it clear that they’re not.

I’m still mildly upset that few people want to resurrect TR as a zombie.

I have 3 different methods to try this: Voodoo, Freemason, and Illuminati. Fully researched. Very scientific. I even have a chunk of atmospherium.

C’mon, Lizards! Zombie TR is all upside with no downside!

re: #244 Charles Johnson

In a weird way, it reminds me of the aftermath of Mai Lai, though in a much more subdued way. There was a lot amount of support for the troops that committed the massacre there, not by people excusing the massacre but by people who believed that the context it occurred in mattered, that these weren’t just guys walking down the street and deciding to flip out. They are fully culpable, they are mass murderers, and that only one was ever charged is a travesty, but it’s important to understand the context of the war and the way we were fighting it and the background it had for the soldiers that committed the atrocity. Treating the story as though they just flipped out one day is useless.

The Salon article to me makes the opposite mistake— by using language like ‘product of a society’, it kind of seems to be deterministic. I get what the article is doing, but I disagree with it. It gets close to saying this was inevitable for Dorner, whereas I think the more relevant thing to say is that one of the side effects of corruption and racism is that it can add insults and injury and drive people nuts. One of the reasons that I object to this in the article is that it’s entirely possible that Dorner was in the wrong in everything, not just his last act, that he was the problem the entire time, but at the very least we have the problem that Dorner was LAPD. They fired him, but does their responsibility end there? If the worse about Dorner is true, if he was a dangerous lunatic, then isn’t there some way they could have channeled him into psychiatric help instead of just flat-out firing him?

A once-in-a-lifetime event. 500 kilotons is nothing to sneeze at; that’s a city-killer.

Just thinking/imagining about TR running thru the current Congress.

He wouldn’t touch or be anything but polite to Pelosi.

He would yell at Reid.

He’d beat the hell out of Boehner, Cantor, and McConnell. He’d break them. Just with fists.

TR meeting Obama is a million fan-fics waiting to happen. About half of the Obama-Lincoln meetings.

And there’s no shortage of worthy people fighting battles with LAPD. This has nationwide attention, but it’s going to be forgotten quickly— as the Salon article says. But the real work on reform isn’t done in response to stuff like this and it’s not done in a flashy, newsworthy way, it’s boring, mundane improvements to oversight, governance, hiring policies, etc. It’s politics.
