Meet the Press: McCain Snaps at David Gregory Over Benghazi Fake Outrage

McBitter
Politics • Views: 33,112

This is me, just shaking my head at the absolutely demented, ongoing Republican conspiracy theories about the Benghazi attack, as John McCain snaps at David Gregory on Meet the Press for daring to ask exactly what McCain thinks is being covered up. McCain never answers, of course, because that would be counter-productive. He’s selling fear and hatred of President Obama to the right wing base, and any real answers to his “questions” are beside the point. Getting specific would ruin the con.

Note: to date, there have been at least 20 briefings, 10 hearings, and more than 10,000 documents submitted to Congress on the Benghazi attack.

The continuing murky insinuations and conspiracy theories from the GOP are just more indicators of how far off the rails they are.

I’d like to take a second and express shock at David Gregory, of all people, actually getting tough with a Republican.

Maybe if Hagel had just winked at McCain a bit more.

I’d like to take a second and express shock at David Gregory, of all people, actually getting tough with a Republican.

To be fair, all he has to do to get tough is ask “What the hell do you even mean, man, your shit makes no sense.”

Because it doesn’t. It is another sign the GOP is not interested in convincing anyone outside their core base of anything. They are not a serious political party right now. They’re more like a scam.

I’d get banned for giving voice to my feelings toward McCain right now, so I’ll just keep them to myself.

I do wish the old bastard would actually do some work for the common good once in a while. But I guess he doesn’t consider that to be his job any more.

Seriously, McCain’s little tantrum on Press the Meat is pretty much all the GOP has left anymore: “Four Americans died, don’t you care?!” It’s the same as their whole bit with Fast & Furious: “An American is dead, don’t you care?!” Meanwhile, 3,000 Americans died under the previous administration and it took a year of calls by families and politicians before Congress would deign to investigate the matter. And when they finally did, they threw all the blame on the guy who we now know, years later, was one of those blowing the whistle and being told to pipe down.

8 jaunte  Sun, Feb 17, 2013 11:42:18am

Racism is an element, but the driving goal is largely the same: Getting at Obama through a major member of his administration. If they can’t get Obama outright, they want him to force somebody they hate in his administration (Holder in F&F, Rice/Clinton in Benghazi) to resign as a consolation prize.

Because at this point, the accusatory tone is all they have. If they admit they can’t prove a crime did occur, then they’ve got nothing. So instead they keep insinuating that a crime had to have occurred, else four people wouldn’t be dead.

I’ll believe it when I see it. He lives to be recognized as an ‘elder statesman’ and getting his face time on the Sunday shows. He’s as strung out as some tweaker in a trailer somewhere, always thinking about where the next bag of meth is going to come from. I think if he didn’t have these dopes on TV telling him what an awesome Old Lion he is, he’d just get more and more pissy towards everything and everyone.

I really feel sorry for his wife once he does retire. Without shows like Gregory’s where he can vent his rage, she’ll probably get the brunt of it.

Closest thing to retirement we’ve seen of late is that he’s barred by term limits from ever serving again as a committee chair. Erratic behavior of humans:

Mom strips during school assembly

A central New York woman hopped on the stage during a school assembly and began stripping, police said.

Aydrea Meaders, 24, was attending a Black History Month presentation at her child’s school. WTEN-TV, Albany, N.Y., said Meaders had been acting normally during the event, conversing with the school’s principal.

During a dance number, Meaders hopped on stage and began dancing with the students performing.

“That wasn’t an expected part of the routine but she wasn’t doing anything inappropriate,” Albany schools spokesman Ron Lesko told WXAA-TV, Albany, N.Y.

But things quickly went downhill.

Meaders removed her coat and top, stripping nude to the waist down, police said.

School personnel rushed the stage and ushered her to a place where students couldn’t see her, Lesko said.

with Benghazi?

McCain: we need a timeline of Obama actions
the night of the attack and why did Obama
say he called it a terrorist attack

Gregory: because he did

McCain: but there are so many semantic
questions about Benghazi!

Gregory: this has been about wordplay?

McCain: There has been a massive cover-up!

Gregory: A cover up of what?!?

McCain: do you care that four Americans died!

Gregory: what is Obama supposedly covering up?

McCain: is Obama a member of al-qaeda?!?
who can say?!

Gregory: would you be willing to raise
taxes to avoid sequester?

McCain: Obama should lead!
Except on immigration!

Gregory: speaking of immigration –
if Obama proposes legislation will it fail?

McCain: of course it will

Gregory: why?

McCain: because Obama has cooties!

Gregory: so if his name is on it – it must fail?

McCain: yes – does Obama want a law
with no credit or a law with his name
on it which must fail?”

The immigration bit is really telling. The White House “leaked” their own proposal yesterday and the GOP immediately started throwing a tantrum. Today, the White House response was “Don’t like what we proposed? Then get your ass in gear and we won’t send the bill to Congress.”

I think the charges are stupid and excessive. This is also not a culture where nudity in day to day life is common, or things might be different, like she wouldn’t have had much clothing on to begin with(and neither would anyone else for that matter). This is an elementary school having an event focused on the kids. This young woman has some sort of problem and shouldn’t have been arrested, she should have been evaluated and offered help. This almost sounds like someone having a bad reaction to meds, someone who is self medicating due to being overwhelmed or someone with some mental health issue. We should offer compassion first, not punishment. And her kids will experience fall out with their peers over this, that can have a profound effect and it can follow them around to another school even.

Comparing five topless women in a remote village amongst their children does not equal some possibly crazy women possibly exposing her genitalia in front of grade school children. They have their norms, we have our norms. This would be like comparing a mother nursing her baby in public to a topless dance act of sorts. Not the same. None of it.

If a society thinks that slavery is just great, that is not an actual defense of slavery, so your idea that societal norms are worth defending apriori is nonsense.

How come that commercial where the little kid is following his (adult) neighbor around as the neighbor is doing yard work/ fixing is car and when the neighbor tells the kid what he’s going the little kid keeps saying “WHY” just popped into my head

180 stabby  Sun, Feb 17, 2013 2:15:25pm

You imply that norms=morals
when pressed you deny it
but you also deny that if cultures disagree on what’s right then at least one culture is wrong.

There’s a contradiction in there.

Either right and wrong are separate from society and norms or it isn’t

If it is then disagreeing cultures can’t both be right.

Make up your mind.

228 b_sharp  Sun, Feb 17, 2013 2:57:09pm

Late to the argument, as usual, but I have to ask what harm was done to those children be viewing that woman’s breasts?

If you want to claim it was just a cultural convention she not expose her upper body, then fine, but charging the woman with child endangerment when there is no evidence viewing breasts causes harm to children is idiotic.

If it’s considered immoral then that morality has a basis, either absolute or cultural. If the basis is absolute then is has to be shown that is the case. If, on the other hand the basis is cultural then it is either arbitrary or based on level of harm. If it is based on level of harm, the harm has to be in evidence. If it is arbitrary then it can also be modified through action, as many arbitrary traditions and laws have been changed in the past.

Viewing a shlong will not hurt the child. Explaining what a schlong is might cause a parent embarrassment but that’s a problem with the parent’s attitude.

We’ve made showing an adult penis into something with sexual connotations and right now a man showing his penis to a child out of the blue tells us the man is disturbed and could possible do more than just expose himself that would harm the child.

However, the circumstances are different between somebody whipping it out to show a child and somebody just parading around without clothes. One shows intent toward a child the other does not, a child seeing his dick is just happenstance.

It might, it might not. But time and place, and the time for a child to be exposed to that is at a place of the parents preference (and yes, I know there are terrible sexually abusive parents, so lets not bring in that strawman)

Cultural bias aside, I’d think that people walking around naked could present serious public health issues. Not everyone has a high standard of personal hygiene, then there are communicable diseases, etc.

I’d like to note that one of the issues in San Francisco was people “showing off”. It would be nice to see society drop some of its taboos, but unfortunately a lot of these people were intentionally breaking these “arbitrary” social norms.

Not really the best way to normalize nudity, yer.

268 klys  Sun, Feb 17, 2013 3:56:06pm

Late to the argument, but my main concern here is why was the charge child endangerment?

I dislike the precedent that exposure to something that the parents don’t want their children to see (rightly or wrongly) brings about grounds for an argument of emotional harm and therefore a charge of child endangerment.

I’d be ok* with it if it were a charge of indecent exposure.

* in the context of this argument.

Nice law, based on somebodies injured feelings. I made a comment up thread that addresses arbitrary decisions.

I agree with Pelosi:

WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) frequently defends “San Francisco values,” but she doesn’t consider stripping down in public to be among them.

“Enough with the public nudity,” she told The Huffington Post in an exclusive interview Tuesday when asked about the city’s recent ban. “Please. We have our standards.”

San Francisco lawmakers outlawed public nudity last November in response to the increased presence of naked people on city property, especially within a specific plaza at the epicenter of the famous Castro neighborhood. The ban officially took effect Feb. 1.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, whose district includes the area in question, introduced the measure to quell growing complaints from neighbors and merchants who claimed their businesses were suffering. “Freedom, expression and acceptance does not mean anything goes under any circumstances,” he said at the time. “Our public spaces are for everyone and as a result it’s appropriate to have some minimal standards of behavior.”

Opponents of the ban, which narrowly passed in a 6-5 vote, argued it would tarnish San Francisco’s reputation as a progressive haven. “I’m concerned about civil liberties, about free speech, about changing San Francisco’s style and how we are as a city,” said Supervisor John Avalos, largely considered to be the city’s most liberal leader.

Pelosi disagrees. “Supervisor Wiener is a very progressive supervisor,” she told HuffPost. “But kids don’t go to the park for — yuck.”

Cultural bias aside, I’d think that people walking around naked could present serious public health issues. Not everyone has a high standard of personal hygiene, then there are communicable diseases, etc.

That is likely true, and is part of the reason underwear was invented.

I’m not saying everybody should go around naked, there are a lot of good practical reasons people wear clothes. What I am saying is we should stop overreacting when confronted with public nudity. In the case of the woman peeling off her top in among a group of kids, the reaction was extreme and based on puritanical ideas based not on practical matters but left over bias from religion.

People tend to conflate cultural bias with what they consider common sense and assume that common sense should be taken as an absolute.

I be happy if people would stop overreacting when they see a woman in the park take her top off, or a woman breast feeding her baby. Men walk around all the time without shirts and the reaction is far less extreme.

Charging somebody for that is stupid.

I would also be happy if people would stop promoting the idea that seeing breasts, or seeing a penis or hairy patch between the legs will somehow harm a child. It won’t. A parent’s overreaction is likely to screw up their kid’s attitude about the body though.

This attitude is one that stems from the belief that young kids are harmed or warped by seeing certain parts of the body.

You came up with a shitload of valid practical reasons public nudity isn’t desirable and if those were the basis for attitudes, I’m be fine with it. What I see though are claims that men will attack and rape a woman if she shows too much skin, or that the woman is somehow less than other woman, a ‘skank’, or a ‘whore’ or a ‘slut’ if she shows too much skin. Men are arrested and charged for pissing in the bushes if someone sees him, and possibly tarred with sexual deviant label if kids happen to be around.

Those are overreactions that need to be excised from our culture.

I was totally not thinking about sexuality, but asked if maybe she was one of those moms from the Time magazine article about “extreme parenting” and she wanted to BREAST FEED the entire first grade.

Wasn’t there a Woody Allen movie where a HUGE breast slowly made it’s way across an open field?

Damn, I can see the scene but can’t think of the title

Yes, and that’s the reaction that is warranted, take her to see a doctor. Not charge her with a crime, and certainly not go batshit crazy whining about a nasty woman corrupting a bunch of kids.

They said she was conversing normally with the principal.

I suppose it was after that the mescalin kicked in.

Reminds me of a roomate (when i was 18) who drank a HUGE gin and tonic before I introduced her to my coworkers.

She seemed normal at first then the gin hit. She was hitting on one guy who was running around a desk and even took out a sword to keep her back.

re: #327 b_sharp

I be happy if people would stop overreacting when they see a woman in the park take her top off, or a woman breast feeding her baby. Men walk around all the time without shirts and the reaction is far less extreme.

Charging somebody for that is stupid.

I would also be happy if people would stop promoting the idea that seeing breasts, or seeing a penis or hairy patch between the legs will somehow harm a child. It won’t. A parent’s overreaction is likely to screw up their kid’s attitude about the body though.

I don’t have a problem with breast feeding babies as that’s a completely different matter. As for the rest, I disagree because of human nature. Give people an inch and they’ll take a mile; remove legal consequences for public nudity and you’ll have all manner of people shedding their clothes and doing weird shit in public. Hell, even with the current laws in place we have that.

Why is the public display of a breast during breast feeding different than casual exposure?

367 stabby  Sun, Feb 17, 2013 4:59:24pm

Well public displays of affection are hard on the lonely people around them.

But it’s my opinion that people should be allowed freedom, and if some people use it to be annoying that’s better than having cops with guns and handcuffs and prison sentences ruining lives just to make life more convenient.

re: #366 b_sharp

Because breast feeding is not done for the sake of exposure. People who expose themselves like this are getting a thrill. Whether it’s an emotional thrill or a sexual thrill probably varies. A woman doesn’t expose her breasts for breast feeding to get a thrill out of it.

371 stabby  Sun, Feb 17, 2013 5:01:30pm

Public masturbation, for one. That’s something I can personally (and unfortunately) attest to having seen on the NYC subway. I can see it easily happening with much more frequency should public indecency laws be struck down (it already happens far too often).

Let’s go really way out there: What’s to stop a D/s couple from showing up in public with the dominant leading his/her naked sub around by a chain attached to his/her dog collar? I don’t care what people do in the privacy of their homes, but I wouldn’t want to have to explain that to my child (if I still had a young one), nor would I care to see it myself.

Another straw man? Maybe, but you asked.

re: #372 dragonath

Snorting lines of coke is a risky act. Too much coke will cause brain damage, and some (maybe not too many) people have an addiction reaction that makes them binge.

But other than the fact that we hate risk, it’s a victimless crime. Cocaine could be used as a useful drug, if used skillfully even.

If it were up to me there would be a constitutional amendment that there shall be no laws against acts that have no victims and that personal risk is a personal matter, not a crime.

Public masturbation is like public urination, defecation and even spitting, it can spread disease. Someone who masturbates in public needs help, they should be in the health system being treated.

I’m not advocating free range nudity or sexual activity. I’m advocating our reaction to it be one of rational reaction. If a man walks up to a kid and exposes himself, or a woman throws off her top and dances in a context that is questionable, we should react appropriately. The man could be a pedophile, the woman could be mentally ill or compromised. Those realities should determine our reaction.

The only time I ever saw public masturbation I was 18, I was alone on a BART train except for woman sitting across from me, a reasonably attractive small black women in her mid or late 20s. She totally ignored me and masturbated through her sweatpants. I sat there feeling glum at being ignored.

I suppose being a sexually desperate teen watching someone who was attractive enough makes the situation different than other people’s. I didn’t mind, I just felt left out.

I guess I just don’t happen to think you can successfully legislate a “rational reaction”. IMO, removing existing laws would cause the problems I’ve already mentioned, and writing a new ones would be extremely difficult as it would involve proving someone’s intent is inappropriate. Who gets to decide that? If the net is any indication of the variety of *cough* odd things that might be considered “sexual”, then… O_o
