Dec. 15, 2011:
Iraq war ends with a $4 trillion IOU
Veterans’ health care costs to rise sharply over the next 40 years

The nine-year-old Iraq war came to an official end on Thursday, but paying for it will continue for decades until U.S. taxpayers have shelled out an estimated $4 trillion.

Over a 50-year period, that comes to $80 billion annually.
Although that only represents about 1% of nation’s gross domestic product, it’s more than half of the national budget deficit. It’s also roughly equal to what the U.S. spends on the Department of Justice, Homeland Security and the Environmental Protection Agency combined each year.

Near the start of the war, the U.S. Defense Department estimated it would cost $50 billion to $80 billion. White House economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey was dismissed in 2002 after suggesting the price of invading and occupying Iraq could reach $200 billion.

Pursuant to this thread and the dialog of the last here’s an article by Richard Perle in The Guardian where he makes it quite clear the attack on Iraq was meant to bring an end to international law.

It’s typical wingnuttery. At one point he claims the UN is a powerful organization that keeps good people from doing the right thing. Then he claims it’s too weak to accomplish anything useful.

7 jaunte  Mon, Feb 18, 2013 8:42:29pm

re: #6 Romantic Heretic

Perle gets a mention in this review of Hubris by Jacob Heilbrunn:

To buttress the administration’s case, Cheney not only visited the C.I.A. to pound away at agency analysts for failing to come up with links between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, but also drew on a secret intelligence unit — if the term is not too grandiose — that was overseen by Douglas Feith, then under secretary of defense. Feith’s researchers, David Wurmser and Michael Maloof, who were both protégés of the prominent neoconservative Richard Perle, spent months combing through raw intelligence reports to discover the truths that had somehow eluded the entire intelligence community. In a small windowless office at the Pentagon, they created “giant wall charts” detailing the intimate links between Iraq and Al Qaeda.

Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy defense secretary at the time, was bowled over: he “was especially taken with the spaghetti lines that Maloof had drawn between the Abu Nidal terrorist organization in Iraq and training camps in Lebanon.” From Lebanon, the lines then went to Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Isikoff and Corn report that these analyses, such as they were, made a big splash at the White House. If anyone complained that solid evidence was lacking, Feith’s team was unmoved: “The Feith analysts were essentially claiming that because Al Qaeda and Iraq had joined together in a clandestine partnership to attack the United States, there would be little, if any, evidence to prove the conspiracy.” [Link: www.nytimes.com…]

Sounds a little like the Glenn Beck blackboard.

“The very lack of evidence is our proof”

One of the things they find problematic is that it reflects badly on their party, and it reflects badly on their personal judgment for having supported the war for so long and so vigorously.

It also reflects badly on the neo-conservative foreign policy ideology, namely that we can transform geo-political reality to our liking through military action.

12 HoosierHoops  Mon, Feb 18, 2013 8:51:04pm

Hi. This is a reprint from last thread about this issue..A little view into my soul.
Please read this..
Well Shit! It is so complex to isolate a few reasons about Iraq. I have come to respect Rachel. I know she has to spoon feed people about reasons of the political winds. We know there were tons of reasons for going to war in Iraq. I have my own views that is just as right as pundits with PH.d’s.
After 911 I supported going to kick AQ’s effen ass! And because our other wars never seen an end. I felt we needed to declare a 2 year war with the might of the US and level those bastards. and then rebuild our relationships in the ME with treaties and diplomacy and continue to be that fucking shinning light on the hill. Do we remember all the emotions then?
America was a wounded animal, hurting. A real leader like Lincoln had skill to begin reconstruction and healing. I was shocked about when Iraq come into play. A pissy 3rd world country beating their chest like everybody else does.
( At least we had leadership in the 60’s with a crazy Russia with 10000 nukes program to destroy us.
All that is my feelings.. But mine has more credence.
When Jordan called from Camp P. telling us he is deploying with 3/5th Marines to Iraq all our lives changes in our family. I was stunned and pained. Why is Bush sending Jordan to Iraq to fight a stupid fucking war.
Jordan fought in the longest baddest battle in Fallujah. He showed me the pics also. We never sleep. many times at 3am we would get a sat phone call from him from a roof top during gun fire in the background ( he could only get the phone once or so a week at 3am our time ) I could never go to sleep worried about him. I am so proud of him for protecting our freedoms. Why waste him for no good reason? I never got this out of my mind..Pics snuck back of firefights where the enemy were laid waste with women and children as human shield..My son blew woman and babies heads off. Bodies and blood and human parts laying about. Later Jordan confessed to me that when walking in the warehouse through the carnage there was a baby screaming on the floor half of his body and arms gone screaming madly when he should be dead.. He just would not stop screaming. Jordan told me with a tear in his eyes he shot him to put him out of his misery.. And for what? To make a Marine go through Hell for nothing but to finish up Daddies failure?
I should stop now unless anybody has a intellectual difference with me.

January 24, 2013: A month of Sunni demonstrations against unjust arrests has led the government to release over 1,800 Sunni prisoners. The protestors accuse the Shia dominated police of using anti-terrorist laws to arrest any Sunni they didn’t like or to intimidate other Sunnis to leave their homes. The right or wrong of it is on the administration that lied us into war and who ordered an invasion under false pretenses. They’re the ones with a whole lot to answer for, not the troops who only did their jobs.

Iraq got a shot at whatever they chose for governance. At some point what the Iraqis do now is on them not us.

And so is how we started the goddamn war. WE WERE LIED INTO WAR. The Bush administration lied to the American people and ginned up sympathy for their revenge fantasies and gained supoport for an invasion they KNEW was bullshit. We invaded Iraq, turned their entire country upside down and started an urban war on their streets, with untold numbers of civilians dying in the crossfire. We paved the way for terrorists like Al Qaeda to gain a foothold in the country. Abu Ghraib is a stain on this country’s honor that will never fade.

That’s not something to be proud of. The one good thing is that we’ve managed to at least keep things from fucking up even more than what Bush and Cheney managed when they lied us into war in the first place.

I was at the State of the Union address Bush gave just before we went into Iraq. When we left the Capitol building, we walked outside and I was aghast - there were armed soldiers every 50 feet (literally), choppers flying overhead shining searchlights on the ground, concrete barriers everywhere.

I remember thinking to myself that the whole scene looked absolutely nothing like America. It looked like an armed prison camp. And I realized that Bush’s SOTU pitch was going to work. The levels of paranoia were just off the scale back then, and they did everything they could to capitalize on that paranoia, even stoke it further.

And will be with us for decades to come. We marvel at the low loss of life, but ignore that medical technology just means many of those who would have died in wars past now will live the rest of their lives disabled, unable to have a full life because of injuries they didn’t have to incur.

And that it would have been cheaper for the military to just pay off the survivors. now they have to bear the costs of treatment and therapy of these fellow, many of whom were quite young - late teens and early twenties - for the rest of their lives.

Journalist rips ‘pro-life’ Republicans for seeking to cut infant nutrition program

While discussing the looming sequestration on MSNBC, journalist David Cay Boyle Johnston slammed Republicans for supporting cuts to a federal program that provides food to the infants of poor mothers.

“Six hundred thousand pregnant women and mothers of small children will be cut from the [Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program],” he said. “The Republicans are always telling us about their reverence for life. Really? They are going to have 600,000 poor women and children not have proper food.”

“There is a lifetime effect on development, especially mental development, if you don’t have proper nutrition in the womb and when you’re an infant, but they are determined to cut those poor children — who are helpless — out of good nutrition.”

If they couldn’t afford to feed them, then they shouldn’t have had the kids…

re: #114 Sol Berdinowitz

Is it not often the case that women have to pay for the untested rape kits to discourage “sluts” from “lying about being raped”?

That’s a thing in a few places. Detroit is fucking broke, so this is actually slightly more understandable there, and a lot of these kits wouldn’t actually strengthen the case— if the issue is whether consent existed, a rape kit won’t tell you the answer to that.

This is more just a sign of where priorities are for solving crime. I’m sure Detroit managed to find money for no-knock warrants and a hell of a lot of other stuff during the same time period.

We have a habit, in this culture, of pretending that we view rape as an ultimately evil crime that we will not stand for, but the reality is that the vast majority of rapists get away with it, even the majority of violent rapists.

My first thought was “Fuck, the bastards are going into Iraq”. I started to cry. This was it, and there was a bad road ahead for us as a country. I also knew this was going to create more problems than it would solve. I might not have a degree and I’ve spent the last couple of decades devoted to being a mom,but am an informed and smart human. I have known men who served in Vietnam and the first Gulf War and it changed them, not always for the better. I don’t blame them, I blame the decision makers, especially when they don’t proceed with truth, care or smarts.

I haven’t watched Hubris yet, I don’t know if I can watch it without screaming and throwing shit at my TV. I confess I originally did support the cause of the Iraq War, but my support was completely predicated on the “fact” that Iraq was an “imminent danger” based on well-confirmed intelligence information. I do recall my reservations, thinking to myself “this had better be true”.

Now that the dust settled and the “intelligence” has been found out to be little more than hype, and that George Tenet et.al. was not only not held accountable for this but given a medal, I’m quite enraged and disgusted.

Given the number of Americans who were killed and forever maimed in this war, the wholesale slaughter of swaths of the indigenous population, and the billions of dollars taken from better causes, I don’t know how anyone involved in selling this fiasco can sleep at night.

re: #6 Romantic Heretic

Pursuant to this thread and the dialog of the last here’s an article by Richard Perle in The Guardian where he makes it quite clear the attack on Iraq was meant to bring an end to international law.

It’s typical wingnuttery. At one point he claims the UN is a powerful organization that keeps good people from doing the right thing. Then he claims it’s too weak to accomplish anything useful.

It is very clear this was meant to end international law applying to the USA - the rest of the world would have to follow international law. It is the old Nixonian “It’s legal if the president does it” mentality of these (in many cases) former Nixonites.

This is really pretty funny: U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has written a letter to defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel asking Hagel to explain an internet rumor about notes that somebody supposedly took during a speech Hagel gave in 2007. To emphasize, Graham’s question wasn’t based on a video or audio recording of the speech, nor even a transcript. Instead, it was about notes taken by Some Dude and posted on Some Dude’s website.

‘Charge the shooter, kids,’ take two:

Law enforcement authorities are increasingly advising school officials — and even young students — to physically confront suspects in future campus attacks as a final line of defense.

The advisories, now included in training videos and documents prepared by police, represent a major shift in tactics for law enforcement officials who have traditionally counseled potential victims to flee and hide while waiting for authorities to answer calls for help.

“These incidents are becoming a fact of life,” University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Chief Susan Riseling told a meeting of law enforcement colleagues gathered here. “If there is no other option, take the shooter out.”

‘Take the shooter out.’ Okay. How?

A suicide car bomber along with other suicide bombers carried out coordinated attacks at a provincial police headquarters in Iraq’s northern city of Kirkuk on Sunday, a provincial police source said.

The Shia led government is afraid that the hostility of the Sunni Arab (15 percent of Iraqis) and Kurds (20 percent) is creating a disunited country that will be in a constant state of unrest. Terrorist attacks so far this year, most of them carried out by Sunnis, have killed or wounded over 500 people

Key phrase — “if there is no other option”. They’re not telling people to bum rush an active shooter first. They’re saying that if there is truly nothing else you can do, then confront that person directly and incapacitate them.

I’ve seen similar statements in damn near every university law enforcement guide for how to handle shooters. The first steps are always to run, or hide or play dead or otherwise make yourself scarce and let law enforcement do their jobs. If you’re totally without any other choice, then you confront the shooter.

Police officials said they were not advocating arming teachers, students, office workers or others to prepare for such attacks; they also emphasized that confronting the attacker should always be the last option.

The title of Riseling’s video — Get Out, Call Out, Hide Out, Keep Out, Take Out — is arranged by the preferred order of response. So, too, is a city of Houston video called Run, Hide, Fight.

In written instructions developed by the U.S. Capitol Police, fighting back is described as the “last resort.”

“You must be committed to the actions you will take, and your attack must be explosive and violent,” the Capitol Police instruction states. “You must do whatever it takes to survive and not worry about the consequences.

“You want to disable the offender with whatever means you can. This could involve throwing items or using objects to strike, stab or slash the subject.”

Stupid NFL player of the week…

NFL lineman Da’Quan Bowers flagged for gun at LaGuardia

A muscle-bound NFL lineman was busted at La Guardia Airport yesterday for packing a powerful .40-caliber handgun in a carry-on bag as he tried to board a flight, authorities said.

Da’Quan Bowers — a 6-foot-5, 290-pound defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — allegedly admitted to having the weapon as he arrived at 11 a.m. at a US Airways ticket counter.

“Mr. Bowers was flagged for holding,” cracked one Port Authority cop. “It’s up to line judge [Queens DA] Richard Brown to determine what the penalty will be.”

…The 22-year-old second-year NFL player was trying to get onto a plane to North Carolina with gal pal Dana Rodgers, who lives in Raleigh, when the Smith & Wesson gun was uncovered in a black suitcase. A clip wrapped in clothing was also found, sources said.

Though the clip was not in the gun, the weapon is considered loaded under New York law because it was filled with bullets.

“The two of them were in the same bag — under the law it’s considered a loaded gun,” the source said.

What is more troubling is that he got away it this past weekend…

The football player told investigators that he had carried the gun up to New York on a plane about three days ago and it had gone undetected, sources said.

It was in his checked luggage and he told the agent as much at the counter. From stupid to strange comes this story…

Physics professor strips, plays 9/11 footage in bizarre FroSci stunt

First-years in Frontiers of Science were supposed to hear a lecture on quantum mechanics from renowned physics professor Emlyn Hughes on Monday morning. But what they witnessed first was a bizarre performance from Hughes that left many of them baffled and confused.

As students filed into the lecture hall, all of the lights were off, except for two spotlights on stage where Hughes was sitting. With Lil Wayne’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” playing in the background, Hughes stripped down to his underwear, then proceeded to change into a black T-shirt and pants. Afterwards, he sat down on the chair, hugging his knees in a fetal position.

Then, as a jumbled video that included footage of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers on 9/11 continued to play on the screen, two figures dressed in black came on stage with long swords. One of them proceeded to chop a stuffed animal in half on a stool.

Students said they were shocked and confused by what was happening on stage.

…The video on screen also showed footage of Osama Bin Laden and battles from World War II.

…Reyna Pacheco Rios, CC ’16, said that she has friend who served in the Marines, and she was shocked when the clip of the 9/11 attacks came on.

“I was like, ‘How is this funny at all?’” Pacheco Rios said.

After the episode, students said that Hughes began teaching the rest of the lecture on quantum mechanics as though nothing had happened. He did, however, wear dark sunglasses and keep his hood up for the entire lecture.

EXACTLY. Yes, NY Law states that the gun can’t be loaded…to most people, that means nothing in the gun itself. Take out the clip, and the gun is ‘unloaded.’ That’s staying within the spirit of the law, even though the law is more specific in stating that the bullets cannot be in a clip (due to the ease of loading a semi-automatic weapon). If I traveled with a gun, I’d probably do the same…pull the clip but not unload it. Honest mistake.

re: #241 Vicious Babushka

The Court denied a stay in the case of Noonan v. Bowen (12A606), but did not act on any other aspect of that case. In other words, the Court refused to postpone a lower court decision that someone is challenging. The usual request for a “stay:” (ie, a postponement) comes when the party making the challenge wants the lower court ruling kept on hold until they can appeal. A “stay” is simply a postponement order.

It would seem that one of the parties (Taitz) was seeking a stay at the lower level. The Court ruled that the postponement was inappropriate, so the lower court could proceed.

I think it clears the way to dispose of the case in swift fashion and/or opens up the lower court to smack down Taitz once again.

Scorned wife allegedly pours boiling water on cheating hubby’s penis

When Nefer Netan of Martinez, Colombia, came home from his alleged mistresses’ house in the wee morning hours, he should have known he was in hot water. But the poor sucker didn’t know the half. According to a local newspaper, his wife, Yolivel Lopez, had learned of the alleged affair earlier that evening thanks to a phone call from his mistress, and waited until he slept. When Nefer snoozed off, the scorned woman reportedly boiled a pot of water and poured the scalding liquid on his genitals. Neighbors in the town near Cerete said the man’s screams “pierced the night sky,” and docs called the penis “utterly destroyed.” Lopez reportedly hasn’t been seen since the incident.

They really have no clue. They live in this fantasy where, if they prove he was ineligible, then everything done over the last 6 years gets rendered null and void. But the constitutional crisis that would erupt would be absolutely mind-bending. In the end, the only option would be to pass the presidency to Biden and go forward. Is mysterious ‘space slime’ found in Somerset linked to Russian meteor strike?

In scenes reminiscent of the classic horror movie The Blob, weird green slime has been found scattered around a birdlife park in Somerset.

The RSPB has appealed for help in identifying the goo – which could be bacteria, fungus or toad innards, wildlife experts said.

Some believe it could be a substance that has been written about for centuries called star or astral jelly, which is said to appear in the wake of meteor showers.

Its appearance has coincided with a meteor strike in Russia and the harmless fly-by of an asteroid at a record distance from Earth last week.

re: #261 FemNaziBitch

I’m figuring that they’d use it as the basis for impeachment (since it would in their view constitute a high crime/misdemeanor due to ineligibility to serve as president).

What that means to all legislation, up to and including any budget item enacted in the past four years, isn’t spelled out in federal law as that kind of situation has never before existed. I’m therefore figuring that the birthers (and the TP hacks) would like to see it all wiped out, and programs like PPACA would be removed as well. It would create such chaos the likes of which have never been seen before.

It would make the transition between Clinton and Bush seem like child’s play by comparison.

In reality, none of that would matter since Congress (note that the SOTU has Congress gaveled into session to hear the President address the nation) and the Courts have all recognized Barack Obama as President, rendering this moot. Obama’s President, and Taitz’s windmills taunting needs to be put to rest once and for all.

re: #304 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

It’s going to depend on the state really. Most states have some kind of character/fitness for judicial positions allowing removal for egregious violations. The costs of having bad judges (those that don’t rule on merits of cases, ignore the existing laws, etc.) means more appeals of lower court decisions, additional time and clogged dockets. The appeal is the primary way to address bad judges (and their rulings), but it will depend on the jurisdiction on how bad conduct is addressed.

Aurora fire helps police discover bomb materials, resident arrested

AURORA, Colo. — A fire was the first thing that drew emergency crews to an Aurora home Monday night. An admission from a resident was the second.

Shortly after that resident admitted to having bomb making materials in the home, an Arapahoe County bomb squad was on the scene at 1490 South Bahama Street, just north of South Tower Road and East Iliff Avenue. Evacuations orders were issued for several of the man’s neighbors in the area shortly thereafter.

According to the Aurora Fire Department, calls came in reporting the fire at approximately 11 p.m. Monday. The resident was forthcoming when emergency crews arrived, telling them he had bomb making materials in a backyard shed.

After removing some devices from that shed, Aurora police arrested one of the resident and charged him with possession of explosive devices. As of 6:30 a.m., the bomb squad had left the scene while police waited for a search warrant to search the home for any more harmful devices.

…“He was one of those guys who thought the world was going to end in 2012,” Bailey said. “And he did own a lot of guns.”

Well, this is an interesting bit from Digby

Investigators have a theory that Adam Lanza’s interest in Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik might have led to the Dec. 14 massacre that left 20 children and six adults dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The theory is based in part on several news articles about Breivik that investigators found in Lanza’s bedroom at the Newtown home where he lived with his mother, Nancy Lanza, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation.

CBS News reported Monday that Lanza saw himself as being in competition with Breivik and chose Sandy Hook Elementary because it was the “easiest target.”

It’s simple. Orly’s case is case number 12A606, and it’s Edward Noonan and a bunch of others vs the California Secretary of State Debra Bowen. He copied that information from the Supreme Court of the US website, their Orders page, and pasted it into the tweet.

“This is good!” means he is an idiot who thinks the only order the supreme court will issue is either for a hearing or a summary decision in favor of Noonan. As others have noted above, the actual decision was to deny certification whereupon Roberts ORDERED the lower court to lift the stay and proceed with the trial.

Dark Matter Experiment on ISS to Announce First Results

One of the most exciting, and with $1.5 billion also most expensive experiments aboard the International Space Station, is poised to be put into the spotlight in two weeks, when the first comprehensive paper with results about the hunt for dark matter will be published. The leading scientist of the space-based particle physics experiment, MIT physicist Samuel Ting, announced on Monday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that their new paper would appear soon and contain big news on the (dark) matter.

The particle collector, called Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, cannot detect the invisible dark matter directly. Instead, it uses a powerful magnet to measure and distinguish between whatever matter and antimatter comes from deep space in the form of cosmic rays.

Since AMS was installed on the space station in May 2011 it has registered some 25 billion cosmic ray particles, Dr. Ting says. Of those, some 7.7 million are electrons or positrons (the electron’s antimatter counterpart). It is the ratio between the two that may ultimately reveal something about dark matter.

No word if dark matter affects communication.

Yeah, they have this image that should a Civil War come that the military by and large will ignore their oath and join a bunch of butthurt assholes who hate the fact that Obama is POTUS and have nothing other than that to justify their secession. It’s actually frankly a rather dim view of our military that they have. That they(the military) would mutiny in mass because of politics. I mean I am sure the rank and file of the military is still pretty conservative probably but they care about the nation more than they do petty political bs which is why the rwnj would be in a rude awakening if they ever tired their little civil war.

Iran sends out snipers to dispatch rats

The Iranian regime has plenty of experience when it comes to extermination, but usually the target is its political opponents.

Today it is seeking to crush a new enemy — the rats that are overrunning Tehran.

These are real rodents, not the human variety, although the means the authorities are deploying against them are not dissimilar.

Poison is proving less and less effective, so they are using sniper teams.

Heh.

Anonymous hacks U.S. State Department and investment firm, leaks data

Anonymous continues with its Operation Last Resort, and its latest targets were the websites of the U.S. Department of State (state.gov) and of investment firm George K. Baum and Company (gkbaum.com).

From the former they exfiltrated - and published - databases containing a treasure trove of personal information about their employees (names, birth dates, phone numbers, email addresses, home and work addresses, and so on).

“Our reasons for this attack are very simple. You’ve imprisoned or either censored our people. […] Basically, you tried to put an end to us and you got owned, there’s nothing more you can say or do. You took away Topiary, Avunit, Neuron, Pwnsauce, lolspoon, Aaron Swartz shall we go on?” they wrote in a not accompanying the leak, reiterating that Operation Last Resort has been launched in memory of recently tragically deceased Internet activist Aaron Swartz.

George K. Baum and Company’s website was defaced, and a link to a ZeroBin post containing details of their customers’ accounts (names, email addresses, passwords and more) in clear text was published on it.

According to a post on the @OpLastResort Twitter account, the investment firm was hit because its Vice President Joshua Magden was a client of Stratfor (Strategic Forecasting Inc.), a US-based think-tank that Anonymous hacked in December 2011.

464 Kragar (Antichrist )  Tue, Feb 19, 2013 10:01:47am

Washington Times Pushes Anti-Muslim John Brennan Conspiracy Theory

Retired Adm. James A. Lyons took to the Washington Times today to push the burgeoning Homeland-inspired conspiracy theory that John Brennan, President Obama’s nominee to lead the CIA, is a Saudi secret agent.

The theory was first cooked up by John Guandolo, a former FBI agent who resigned from his job after he was charged with having an affair with a star witness in the corruption trial of former congressman William Jefferson, among other improprieties. He has since made a career promoting anti-Muslim conspiracies.

In the Washington Times, Lyons writes that Saudi Arabia’s “recruitment of Mr. Brennan to the ideology of Islam” makes him a security risk.

“It’s interesting that no counterintelligence alarm was triggered at the time that this alleged conversion was occurring,” Lyons writes. This could, of course, be because there is no proof it ever happened. But Lyons supposes, “Most likely, that’s because at that time the sophisticated Islamic objectives driving the global jihad movement by the Muslim Brotherhood were not understood by those who witnessed his ‘conversion.’”

Wonder what the chances are of having an alert, well-trained of-duty cop sitting in traffic with you, ready to save your life in a split second. Not trying to be flippant. There are just too many situations where having CCW etc. would not save you. :(

A great example of that is the Aurora shoot, where the stats imply several CCW folks in the audience. if the CCW rate there is only 1%-5 for 5 did the right thing and fled. They did the sensible thing. Which happens a lot. I do not get the assumption the gun is any kind of guarantee.

I’m starting to think anti gun people are projecting that falsehood to promote their view, but it’s a strawman of the first order. No defense class I have ever seen presents a weapon (or martial art) as anything but an improved fighting chance.

That is one of my ongoing points of discussion. If you want to defend your own home and family with a gun, that is your choice.

But if you wnt to defend yourself or others in a crowded public place, especially one in panic at the sound of gunshots, you had better be well trained, experienced, posess nerves of steel, good situational awareness and a sound sense of judgement or you are likely to make things even worse.

Umm, actually, the car jacking was not stopped by a gun, or even the person using the gun. The guy got away with the car. He was caught later by police.

The real point is he is alive and unhurt. I don’t give a crap about the property. Compare that result to OC this morning. Multiple unarmed dead victims. Too damn bad they had no way to fight or escape.

No, sorry, gotta disagree. If you’ve got to stick to Mel, Young Frankenstein bumps all but number one. And you’ve not given space for PeeWee’s Big Adventure or the Muppet Movie, or Arsenic and Old Lace. Gas heater wouldn’t go on. Get ladder out, go waaaay up, press reset button. Still nothing. Notice pilot light is out. Go through lighting procedure. Still nothing. Go way up and press reset button again. Nope. Notice wire to thermostat is broken (probably during pilot lighting procedure). Peel a bit of wire and reattach. Still nothing. Try reset button again? No, I notice that after I relit the pilot light, I forgot to turn the knob to ‘on’. Now I have heat! Still have to put the ladder away.

If only we had a good study on the matter. But we don’t, so we don’t really know how that plays out. All the existing studies have been done by advocates-From pro gun CATO to anti gun HCI. More loyal to the cause than the facts. But it’s really easy to find instances of car jacking stopped by a gun. I found a bunch where off duty cops intervened successfully. An off duty cop is pragmatically the same as a reasonably well trained CCW civilian.

Those instances are good arguments to arm cops, but not to arm anyone else.

No, an off duty cop is same as a trained up CCW holder, except he may be more likely to make an arrest rather than just call 911 if the bad guy runs off. In the car they are really similar circumstances. The bad guy has the advantage-benefit of surprise. The off duty cop has to work the moment like anyone else.

This might be an exaggeration but I agree with your overall point. When faced with an armed gunman, having a handgun would be optimal. Does that mean everyone should be required to walk around with a handgun? No. I believe in the right for people to obtain a CCW. At the same time I agree that a state or city also has a right to regulate CCW. If one so desires to have a CCW and it is not allowed in their city or state than the obvious choice it to move to a city or state that allows CCWs.

In your google list only one instance was a prevention. In the other instances the thieves got away with the vehicle, so if you’re saying having a gun prevents the theft it isn’t borne out. In one of those instances the thief was shot, but it doesn’t look like that had an impact on his eventual arrest.

I have a question that you may have information on: What is the ratio of prevented hijackings with a gun to those without a gun? If we have say, 10 instances where a hijacking was prevented in some way, how many were prevented by a driver/passenger using a gun and how many were prevented by a driver/passenger not using a gun?

If you can’t answer that, then your argument tells us nothing. If you can answer that then your point will have real substance.

Hagel will be confirmed despite being a moron. I would like to know what happened in Benghazi. Pleas for help and no one heard them.

If no one heard them, how do you know they cried for help?

544 labman57  Wed, Feb 20, 2013 6:59:00pm

Irony — many of the same members of Congress who have been hypercritical of Hagel, negatively speculating on his worthiness to serve as Secretary of Defense … still sing the praises of Rumsfeld and his cronies from the Bush/Cheney regime.

This is despite the overwhelming evidence that the Bush Administration deliberately conned Congress and the American people into supporting an invasion of a foreign nation over phantom WMDs, but actually were instigating hostilities in the name of war profiteering.
