Not Right Wing Journalism’s Finest Hour

The entire right wing noise machine fell for a fake story
Wingnuts • Views: 27,934

When breitbart.com’s Ben Shapiro posted his now-infamous fake story about Chuck Hagel and “Friends of Hamas,” it’s noteworthy that the entire right wing media machine immediately jumped on the story and spread it far and wide. It’s difficult to find a right wing website that didn’t run the story; this is how they roll, with nearly instant unison parroting of stories that advance the agenda, whether obviously fake or not.

Today National Review editor Rich Lowry actually posted a correction — which is more than the majority of conservative sites will do: ‘Friends of Hamas’ - by Rich Lowry.

A week or so ago, Capitol Hill was swirling with rumors that Hagel might have been associated with a group called Friends of Hamas. These rumors were mentioned in this space (albeit conditionally and with grains of salt). It turns out that the group doesn’t exist and the rumor was based on a hypothetical question that then spread in a classic Washington game of telephone, as reported here.

This might seem like semi-responsible journalism, but watch: the next time one of these fake outrages floats by, they’ll jump aboard as if this never happened.

UPDATE at 2/20/13 12:45:06 pm

Since Lowry said in his post that the National Review “mentioned” the rumors “conditionally and with grains of salt,” let’s take a look at the words that actually appeared on their site. Call it “fact-checking,” if you will.

First, from Andrew McCarthy: Is Hagel Toast? - by Andrew C. McCarthy - the Corner - National Review Online

As John notes, Ben Shapiro has reported at the Breitbart site Big Peace that one of Hagel’s funding sources is a group purportedly called “Friends of Hamas.” That might make someone a good fit for president of Egypt, prime minister of Turkey, or any number of advisory posts on the White House staff. But given that being a “friend of Hamas” — at least the kind of friend who provides material support to that terrorist organization — is a crime in the United States, it may not be quite what the Senate is looking for in a secretary of defense.

How is that “conditional?” Is the word “purportedly” supposed to give them an out, even though the rest of the paragraph quite clearly treats it as a fact?

Second, from Andrew Stiles: Levin Defends Hagel, Calls GOP Disclosure Request ‘Unprecedented’ - by Andrew Stiles - the Corner - National Review Online.

Rumors abound on Capitol Hill that a full disclosure of Hagel’s professional ties would reveal financial relationships with a number of “unsavory” groups, including one purportedly called “Friends of Hamas.” The GOP aide said it was “noteworthy” that the White House has yet to deny the association. “Maybe it’s not true, but why not provide a list of groups he spoke to and remove all doubt?” the aide said.

There’s that “purportedly” again, followed by dark insinuations that the White House hasn’t denied the accusation.

Pretty obviously, the National Review’s writers pushed this story as factual, and they did much more than simply “mention” it — and Lowry’s attempt to picture it as “conditional” is just as ridiculous as the fake story itself.

They’ll either act like it or didn’t happen or more likely if you ask me blame Hagel, Obama, and the left for it. Why because no true conservative. Still glad the NR retracted it but this is still shit.

Pretty sad when Lowry’s words there are actually regarded as a CORRECTION, in reality it is more like a hand washing. The only thing missing there is words to the effect of “In case anyone was mislead…”

It’s not what they thought it was, but now that they’re ready to recant, it exists.

Are you going to apologize for hinting (with a grain of salt only a lawyer could find) that Hagel is a guilty of treason?

Are you going to apologize for the conservative smear machine that works like this? Someone makes up a quote. Someone else quotes it “with a grain of salt”. Someone else quotes with the salt missing. Pretty soon, commenters at this Corner think you said it and its true.

Yes, your “reporters” used an unsubstantiated rumor from a known smear-factory about a group with a name that doesn’t pass the laugh-test to accuse a public figure of being funded by terrorists, but it’s not like you did anything WRONG. You gestured vaguely in the direction of a grain of salt, so that absolves you of all responsibility to ensure that the things you publish are true. The rumors were “swirling”, so what did we expect you to do? NOT pass them on until you had confirmed them? No, that’s the sort of thing a *journalist* would do. We know not to expect that here…

Brian Camenker: No Proof that Bullying Targets Gay Kids, ‘If There Is Such a Thing’

MassResistance head Brian Camenker joined Sandy Rios of the American Family Association yesterday to attack the Department of Education for citing the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s School Climate Survey, which he labeled as “propaganda,” in a memorandum.

He told Rios that the survey on anti-LGBT bullying is “not scientific at all” and doubted its claims “about how transgender kids and homosexual kids — if there is such a thing — are harassed and everything.”

These people are fucking evil incarnate.

Oh yeah, and the whole “endorsed by Iran” thing didn’t happen either:

Let’s stop here for a moment and note that the sum total of the evidence for the claims of Senators Cruz and Inhofe is a statement from Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast, who, when asked about the Hagel nomination at a press conference, said that he hoped that the U.S. would seek a different policy course. “We hope there will be practical changes in American foreign policy and that Washington becomes respectful of the rights of nations,” Mehmanparast said.

30 HappyWarrior  Wed, Feb 20, 2013 12:38:56pm

Another angle to this is that it’s not about a kid being gay though that is many times the case. It’s sometimes about a kid being perceived to be gay because he’s shy or whatever. I know for a fact that some kids in middle school thought I was gay because I was shy especially around girls. Nothing wrong with being gay of course but kids will go after the perception. Really, what strikes me about the state of our country is there are a lot of people who are growing with the times. My very Catholic grandmother seems to have come around on gay marriage but there are other people like the asshole that Kragar linked to who still want to live in the darkness or return to a more darker time where homosexuals and others are not only to be treated like outcasts because of who they are but they should be treated like criminals too.

On Sen. Cruz’s, Inhofe’s, etc charge that Hagel was endorsed by Iran:

Mathew Duss, Senate Tested, Iran Approved? Complaints about Chuck Hagel grow more cartoonish by the day.

It’s become difficult to keep track of the all the ridiculous charges that have been thrown at Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel over the past few months, but surely one of the most absurd is the idea that the government of Iran “endorsed” his nomination.

These comments are utterly unremarkable. Last November, Mehmanparast responded with almost exactly the same boilerplate language when asked about Obama’s re-election. Senior Iranian government figures have also said similar things when asked about new Secretary of State John Kerry, but for some reason this was not trotted out as evidence that the Islamic Republic sees Kerry as a friend. In other words, the claim that “the government of Iran formally and publicly” praised Hagel’s nomination is simply fiction.

Host Megan Kelly began a segment about Al Jazeera’s expansion into the American television market by raising questions about the network’s “real anti-American bias.” Contributor Lisa Daftari agreed, veering into blatant Islamophobic fear-mongering in the process:

DAFTARI: The point is they want to differentiate themselves from their sister network, but at the same time, it’s the same thing. They’re having the same type of coverage. They’re apparently expanding to eight cities, including Detroit, Michigan. Detroit, Michigan is a large ex-pat community of Muslim-Americans and sleeper cells have been detected. You can Google this, you can find out all this information. So if you’re trying to set yourself apart the Qatari petro-dollars are backing this, you’re still developing in this area where the sleeper cells have been detected. They’re going to have do do much more to prove to me that they’re different from their sister network.

Party leaders agreed to it, House Republicans voted overwhelmingly for it and President Obama signed it into law — all that matters now is whether and how they address it.

But Republicans continue to pretend that White House officials bear the bulk of the responsibility for its continued existence and consequences — that by introducing the idea into debt limit negotiations back in July of 2011, they committed the only sequester sin that matters. That amounts to hoping the very people they’re spinning will forget the sorry history of that indelible crisis.

re: #61 wrenchwench

I think that’s the new ‘fake but accurate’.

It reminds me of this brilliant observation by Shiplord Kirel:

Many years ago, I read an article about a missionary who went to New Guinea to work with some barely contacted tribes. The culture of one of these tribes was such that they openly admired lying and treachery. When the preacher told them the story of Judas’s betrayal, for example, they responded with a low whistle of admiration.

I don’t know whether this missionary’s tale was true, but it rather reminds me of the Lubbock Republicans: They are, themselves, pathological liars. They have little regard for education and knowledge because they can simply invent whatever “facts” they require, rather than working hard to acquire them. They apparently think this is a good thing, a sign of power and status. The only reason they dislike being called liars is the implication that they aren’t getting away with it. If you call them out, you haven’t impugned their honesty, you have impugned their skill and power. It therefore does no good to prove to them that Mitt is lying, they actually admire him for it.

Kincaid: Al Gore Introducing the US to Demonic, Islamist Forces

Yesterday, we reported on how Accuracy In Media’s Cliff Kincaid and Rick Wiles of TruNews believe that President Obama is supporting a global Islamist movement and should be arrested.

But that’s not all.

According to Wiles, people are having strange dreams where people eat a “fake manna” that represents “Lucifer trying to replicate what God did and feeding his people,” leading to a new demonic “spiritual transformation.”

Kincaid linked those dreams back to… Al Jazeera’s purchase of Current TV, which he claims proves that Al Gore is pushing a demonic Islamist force into America.

Seriously?

re: #50 HappyWarrior

Yup. Any Senator and Congressman, indeed anyone who’s familiar with the Arab Israeli conflict and the WoT would know that any group with the name Hizbullah or Hamas would automatically raise eyebrows because those groups are on the State Department’s Foreign Terrorist Organization list. Both Hamas and Hizbullah are on the list since 1997.

By being placed on the list, there are legal ramifications:

It is unlawful for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to a designated FTO. (The term “material support or resources” is defined in 18 U.S.C. § 2339A(b)(1) as ” any property, tangible or intangible, or service, including currency or monetary instruments or financial securities, financial services, lodging, training, expert advice or assistance, safehouses, false documentation or identification, communications equipment, facilities, weapons, lethal substances, explosives, personnel (1 or more individuals who maybe or include oneself), and transportation, except medicine or religious materials.” 18 U.S.C. § 2339A(b)(2) provides that for these purposes “the term ‘training’ means instruction or teaching designed to impart a specific skill, as opposed to general knowledge.” 18 U.S.C. § 2339A(b)(3) further provides that for these purposes the term ‘expert advice or assistance’ means advice or assistance derived from scientific, technical or other specialized knowledge.’’

Representatives and members of a designated FTO, if they are aliens, are inadmissible to and, in certain circumstances, removable from the United States (see 8 U.S.C. §§ 1182 (a)(3)(B)(i)(IV)-(V), 1227 (a)(1)(A)).

Any U.S. financial institution that becomes aware that it has possession of or control over funds in which a designated FTO or its agent has an interest must retain possession of or control over the funds and report the funds to the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

That, in a nutshell, was why Friedman went and used the over-the-top name Friends of Hamas when asking his sources in the Senate whether Hagel had any skeletons in the closet.

Now, the RWNJs and outlets like NR are still trying to hold on to the fake but accurate/truthiness aspect. They found a smear they could really sink their teeth into despite the fact it’s bogus and are doubling down on the derp.

Now, Breitbart’s claiming that Hagel’s in trouble because the Atlantic Council are pro-Hamas because Saad Hariri supposedly backs Hamas.

Mind you that if the name Hariri sounds familiar, it’s because Rafiq Hariri, his father, was assassinated by Hizbullah/Syria laid the foundation for the Cedar Revolution and the March 14 movement. Saad is considered pro-West, and his statements have gotten him in trouble with Syria to the point of Assad’s regime issuing arrest warrants for him providing material support to anti-Assad rebels.

Hariri has been acting as an intermediary between Hamas and Fatah in trying to get reconciliation within the Palestinian Authority. That doesn’t necessarily make him a friend of Hamas or supporter of Hamas.

Most of the rest of what is written about Hariri and his ties to Hamas online are lockstep with Joel Pollak’s claims - and I haven’t been able to verify those claims from other sources.

FWIW, here’s a list of supporters of Atlantic Council, and you’ll note a whole boatload of big names - from private endowments and foundations, to branches of the US military, NATO, foreign governments, and major corporations.

Years.

I know I am repeating myself, but the GOP is pretty much done with people leaving it for now. What’s left wants to keep the name of the party, and will try to force the others to do the leaving. One side has money and position, the other has (a bit less) money and numbers. It’s pretty close to an equal fight.

The thing is, the reason they’ll fight instead of pick up their marbles and start anew is the way the game is rigged. Back when Perot looked like he was actually going to create a powerful third party, the powers that be re-wrote the rules in such a fashion that the GOP (and the Democratic party as well) gets the Big Bucks. The way they did was to say that the two largest parties get the big share, any other parties that cross another threshold get less, and anyone who doesn’t cross the threshold gets nothing.

See, if they leave to form another party they no longer cross the threshold. The big bucks stay with whoever claims (successfully) to be the heirs of the Big Party, and those bucks stay until it’s shown they’re not as big (next presidential election).

It’s about money and power, and the ones who keep the name get it. So everyone who’s going to leave has pretty much done so already.

Between the big money Republicans doing a deal on immigration in the face of xenophobic tea partiers, and national level Republicans openly pushing for Gay Rights, I wonder how long it will be before the religious right foot soldiers officially abandon the GOP, or officially kick out the “RINO”s?

None of this will come to pass. The “moderates” are too spineless to leave the party, mostly out of Stockholm Syndrome. Look at the last election, and some of the supposedly moderate Republicans here.

They went right ahead and voted GOP anyway, despite the obvious anti-woman, bigoted, torpedo-the-budget-to-screw-Obama bent the Republicans have taken. And then when they’re pressed on it, they either shrug their shoulders or refuse to say who they voted for.

The biggest issue with that segment is you have to sit through the bit about the horsemeat scandal to get to the meteors. But the meteors was just …brilliant.

Excuse me but all of the stories inside the right wing noise machine are falsified this just happened to be one that wasn’t constructed carefully and so wasn’t deniable!

I do wonder if the moderates would have come out for Santorum or Bachman.

We will probably see in 2016. I do not think the GOP nominee in 2016 will be another establishment type like Romney. Some variety of the crazy will be nominated then.

Oscar-nominated Palestinian filmmaker detained briefly at LAX

Los Angeles (CNN) — The first Palestinian filmmaker nominated for an Oscar was briefly detained by U.S. officials who questioned the validity of his Academy Awards invitation as he and his family arrived in Los Angeles for this weekend’s event, his publicist told CNN on Wednesday.

The brief detention of Emad Burnat, a West Bank farmer who spent five years making his “5 Broken Cameras” home video in his village of Bil’in, was quickly criticized by fellow documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, whom Burnat had contacted for help while being questioned at Los Angeles International Airport.

U.S. authorities also placed Burnat’s wife and 8-year-old son, Gibreel, in a holding area at the airport Tuesday night, Moore said on his Twitter account.

“Apparently the Immigration & Customs officers couldn’t understand how a Palestinian could be an Oscar nominee. Emad texted me for help,” Moore tweeted. “After 1.5 hrs, they decided to release him & his family & told him he could stay in LA for the week & go to the Oscars. Welcome to America.”

Imagine the wailing from the Bryan Fischers when one of those loses a national election. They’ll be calling for God’s punishment, mass destruction and saying that Satan has finally won.

It was amazing how the non-regular bloggers at PJMedia all came out to push Bachmann. They wanted her SO much.

If they nominate a Santorum, that’ll bring out the wingers - but will the moderates turn out to vote someone so far to the right as President?

Undoubtedly it will. Given the number of Muslim mosques and community centers that have been vandalized and have had attempted firebombings in Texas recently (more than half a dozen separate incidents in the past year alone), it is a dead certainty that the level of hysteria will not abate anytime soon.

Disinformation 101: conservative pundits and politicians take turns making crap up and then proceed to cite each other (“There are stories out there that blah, blah, blah occurred/was said/etc.”) as justification for propagating the fallacious stories.

This is what happens when your primary sources of “factual” information are the online blogosphere, local supermarket rags, or in some instances, purely hypothetical scenarios presented by members of the news media in the form of “what if?” queries. Anyone can tell anyone anything about anything — it doesn’t make it necessarily true.

Unfortunately, the dissemination of nonsensical rumors and inflammatory innuendo is a trademark of most conservative shock jocks, right wing bloggers, and the fine journalism observed at media outlets owned by News Corp.
