Indiana GOP Pushes Bill to Mandate TWO Invasive Ultrasounds

Republican “rebranding”
Politics • Views: 25,100

Republicans in Indiana are not happy with a bill that mandates an invasive transvaginal ultrasound procedure before a woman would be allowed to have an abortion.

They’re not happy because they want to force women to undergo TWO invasive transvaginal ultrasound procedures — before and after: Double Ultrasound Bill in Indiana Passes Out of Senate Committee.

The Indiana state Senate on Wednesday advanced a bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound procedure both before and after having a medication-induced abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The Senate Health and Provider Services Committee approved Senate Bill 371 on Wednesday by a vote of 7 to 5, sending it to a full vote in the state Senate. The bill, introduced by state Sen. Travis Holdman (R), imposes heavy regulations on clinics and physicians that offer medication abortions, which are generally used to end a pregnancy up to 10 weeks from a woman’s last period. It would require women to be presented with the sound and image of the fetal heartbeat before the abortion and to return for a follow-up ultrasound to ensure that she is no longer pregnant and has stopped bleeding.

Dr. Anne Davis, the consulting medical director for Physicians for Reproductive Health, said the requirement would place an undue burden on women seeking to end their pregnancies. “She can do a blood test at any local facility after an abortion to show that the hormone levels are going down as they should, there’s no medical reason to make her drive back to the abortion clinic and go through another ultrasound,” she said. “This is yet another onerous, medically unnecessary barrier.”

The director of the Indiana chapter of religious fanatic anti-choice group “Right to Life” says, “Hey, just think of it like having sex. What’s the big deal?”

Sue Swayze, the legislative director of Indiana Right to Life, told local radio station WBAA that that goal of the bill is to protect women’s safety and hold abortion clinics to higher health standards. She said she does not understand why it would be a problem to mandate transvaginal ultrasounds.

“I got pregnant vaginally,” she said. “Something else could come in my vagina for a medical test that wouldn’t be that intrusive to me. So I find that argument a little ridiculous.”

If that disgusting little talking point sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same one used by wingnut ranter Dana Loesch.

Because the government is totally allowed to dictate to me who I have sex with.

-no one, ever.

The “this is what you get for having sex” crowd is getting pretty blatant here. Not that it hasn’t always been about this.

Just because you don’t find things going into your vagina willy-nilly to be invasive doesn’t mean someone else won’t.

there’s a word for forcing something into someone else’s vagina….can’t think of it off the top of my head

I’m having a hard time with anyone comparing this to rape. I’ve been raped, and I’ve had a transvaginal ultrasound before an abortion, and I can tell you that the two experiences were completely different.

Forced ultrasounds are ridiculous, unnecessary, and invasive, but I can’t equate them to rape. As for letting a doctor put something inside me against my will, I have to get a medically unnecessary pelvic exam and pap smear every year in order to get birth control pills, but no one is calling that rape.

Am I wrong here? Seriously, I’m not trying to stir up shit, I just want to know if you see any flaws in my point of view.

What’s to stop them from mandating 100 transvaginal utrasounds. Or 1000?

24 stabby  Thu, Feb 21, 2013 2:22:02pm

I think that these would be ok as long as the governer has to show up and ALSO take an ultrasound up the ass ever time a woman gets hers, and he should do it in front of the press. And if he doesn’t take his then the woman can waive hers.

You’re missing the point. This isn’t about the ultrasound procedure. It’s about forcing women to undergo a needless procedure at their own expense. There is no good reason to force a transvaginal ultrasound on a woman unless you want to slut shame her or force her to spend money she might not have so you can interfere with her rights.

These are deliberate barriers and methods of slut shaming women so that the ranting lunatics in the pro-life movement can control a woman’s life.

No, I totally get the point. I understand why they want this legislation and I agree with everything you’ve said here. I just think calling it rape is a little disrespectful to rape victims. I guess in a way it’s a rape of a woman’s privacy and autonomy…

Rebecca Marino quits tennis because of bullying on social media

Think back to those days as kids when you were standing on a basketball court or a putting green or a tennis court day-dreaming about what it would be like to one day be a professional. A kid’s mind wonders to Fenway or Augusta or Wimbledon, creating a fantasy world where you are the person everyone is watching and rooting for and that shot you take or that putt you hit is somehow superimposed on that huge stage.

And then imagine you get there. Hour after sweaty hour you spend on your backhand and serve and you slowly improve to one of the best in the world. And once you get there, you keep getting slammed by people you don’t even know and that forces you to eventually leave the game you worked so hard to enter.

Meet Rebecca Marino, a 22-year-old Canadian tennis player who has been ranked as high as 38th in the world in women’s professional tennis. Marino has a 150-107 record in her WTA career, with no wins and one runner-up back in 2011. This week, Marino announced that she would be retiring from professional tennis because she was struggling with all the online abuse she was getting from “fans” that berated her on social media.

re: #21 OtterQueen

As an honest question (and feel free not to answer), was the transvaginal ultrasound recommended by the doctor or required by law?

I think for me part of the issue is that we’re all used to sucking it up and going with doctor’s recommendations even if we aren’t keen on them, because that’s a recommendation being made on our own case (generally) and supposedly by someone who has some idea of what our best interests are.

I don’t for a moment believe that any politician knows what’s best for me and think they should be kept out of all medical decisions, but particularly to recommend something like that is …distasteful. I am somewhat ambivalent about calling it rape for a number of reasons and probably lean slightly against.

For the record, the pelvic exam and pap smear are definitely in the category of “shit I put up with for my own good” because of the chance for cervical cancer. But only for that reason. There’s no reason to have to have it every year just for birth control.

One can’t compare it to violent rape, but it is a physical violation. It is a State Mandated Violation.

Unlike other medical vaginal ultrasounds that are necessary for health reasons, for the mother or the baby, (and are not mandated by the State) this is not. This is purely a Political Mandate.

Not that “negative energy” helps anything, but I think it’s likely that her decision to withdraw from tennis has mostly to do with depression, and social media is just details. She’d probably be at the same point even if she’d never heard of Twitter.

There are definitely doctors who push the issue a hell of a lot more than is needed.

I’m on BC. Have been on BC from a fairly young age because I like to be a functioning human being all month long. Opted for an IUD a few years ago because the risk of pregnancy is lower (less chance of failure).

On my followup visit, the doctor overseeing the resident commented that she wouldn’t have recommended hormonal BC for me because of some of my other health issues. I considered it quite good that I refrained from snapping at her that my other issues would probably be worse without it.

Plus at least the doctors I go to have implemented the 3 years of normal tests and you can cut the Pap smear down to ever third year or whatever it is. Small blessings, I will take. (That shit hurts.)

Especially the idea of having one after an abortion. It would be like trying to prove a negative using that to show an abortion was complete. The way mentioned above (blood test for hormones) or the way I’ve heard that was the standard (lab exam of the stuff removed) would be a much more effective means.

Actually, I find the OB/GYN’s in more affluent areas are the worst. They want to provide “the best” care.

Others are just glad women come in for an exam at all.

Stolen oreos? Those are the best!

I don’t think the police report mentions felony theft but if those are the charges she would have had to steal over $1,000 worth of merchandise. The police report does mention multiple incidents over the course of 7 months.

re: #58 Kragar (Antichrist )

A few years back, a doctor had my wife get a whole series of tests she hated for something that turned out to be nothing. A few months later when she tried to see about birth control, it took 3 months, 5 office visits at $20 a pop and she was still getting stonewalled. She hates all doctors now and I can’t convince her otherwise.

And I thought my former endocrinologist was test happy.

Because my student health insurance in grad school was catastrophic coverage only, I didn’t get co-pays for medicines or doctor visits. Every time I would walk through her door, it would cost me around $300 — $100 for the visit and another $200 for the blood tests and other lab work she would order every damn time. And she demanded that I see her every three months like clockwork. PLUS there were the monthly medications I was on, which was another expense.

When my student loans dried up, so did the money that I had to spend on doctor visits. I stopped going to see her. There weren’t any other options for me at the time. Now I can go get medical care again, so it’s a bit better.

I can see that, but I think “co-dependent” isn’t the word you’re looking for.

Whatever the wingnut, positive connotation word for “totalitarian”, “oppressive”, “cruel” would be right.

Righteous maybe?

Still is it worth it for them to pursue the case economically instead of just firing her?

So I should put up with an exam I don’t want, may not be able to afford, and isn’t medically indicated because it’s for my own good?

I would say, rather, that the Pap smear is still highly recommended for women (once every 3 years if your previous ones have been normal), it just isn’t medically required for BC and shouldn’t be treated as such.

79 Vicious Babushka  Thu, Feb 21, 2013 2:56:25pm

WTF I mean WTFF. Wingnuts are totally OK with ultrasound rape but they think every woman should carry an AR-15 to blow away some random guy they think might try to rape them (especially if the lady is Scarlett O’Hara and the alleged would-be rapist is some emancipated cotton picker who looks at her for a fraction of a second too long).

Actually, co-dependents fall under the martyr category in many, many cases. They don’t see it as totalitarian, it’s all done out of Love and Concern. And, they will make sure you follow the rules if it kills them.

I’m happy. The chinese company I ordered my fancy, big, android tablet with a keyboard from has been resisting letting me send it back for a month. After all the foot dragging, I don’t trust them to send a new one anyway.

So I figured out how to open it up myself and reseat the connectors to the display. Now the display stopped flickering and having bad pixels!

I think the keyboard is ok, it’s just charge light that’s flaky and rarely comes on. The battery is only about 2/3 as good as it should be, but maybe I’ll just live with that.

I agree. Cervical Cancer and Breast Cancer run in the family, both mom and I have had issues. I’m not sure all the extra bru-haha and tests that some doctors try to encourage are necessary.

re: #91 FemNaziBitch

That’s an interesting insight

So people whose religious beliefs have them do cruel or evil things:
1) feel some discomfort in that role
2) feel some discomfort for being hated for being evil
3) can’t blame their religion or themselves, if they were capable of that level of independence they wouldn’t be cruel fanatics.
4) so they blame their victims
5) in any case they feel like victims themselves, not of their beliefs, not of (what they believe to be) God’s commands, but of people who judge them for doing objectively evil things.

It’s funny. I don’t think religious terrorists feel the same way. They’re higher on their belief in their specialness, their own holiness. And they don’t think of their victims as human at all, so they don’t feel victimized by their victims’ opinions…

But I wonder if there might be some cases of overlap.

No but the felony charges indicate that she stole over a $1,000 in a 7 month period. Go ahead and steal $1,000 from your employer and see how it goes. Stealing is illegal.

I say the only sensible and direct approach for a female to defend herself is to actually carry an AR-15 within her vagina. Free’s up the hands and removes the sexual offenders malicious organ at the same time. Given that some sort of radio controlled firing device could be rigged to something like a ring or bracelet.

After all why would god make the hole in the first place if he didn’t intend it for use as a convenient storage facility?///

I think it’s in the same spectrum. The idea that “We are thy brothers keeper” and will be judged as such. It leads to the idea that killing Dr. Tiller is required by G-d.

Or abusing children is sparing the rod.

Or even the simple constant nagging that accompanies the oft cited “shrew”. or The mother who has given everything for her children and they never do a thing for her or call her when they move out.

In men, I think it is seen as “fatherly responsibility”. It is my job to keep my girl a virgin until she is married so I will make sure she never goes on a date or is alone with a boy and will constantly check on her email and etc …

Both are true. Walmart is a bunch of cheap bastards.

Stealing from them is still wrong.

The solution to lawlessness at the top of society is not to embrace lawlessness everywhere, it is to enforce the laws against those at the top (e.g., thieving bankers).

my preferred method would be shaming the soulless bastards into paying their employees a living wage

they are the richest family in the world. if they don’t realize that a 10% across the board wage increase for all of their workers is good for them, then they don’t understand capitalism and their ignorance will come back to bite them in the ass when they least expect it
