Renowned Conservation Photographer Garth Lenz: The True Cost of Oil

The impact of the Alberta Tar Sands mining project
Environment • Views: 31,514

Garth Lenz is one of the world’s most famous conservation photographers (with a perfect name for it), and here he is with a TED Talk, using his stunning photography to illustrate exactly what happens to an ecosystem when we mine its tar sands to extract oil. It’s pretty shocking to see the terrible reality behind the Keystone XL debate.

Lenz gets choked up at a couple of points in his presentation, and it isn’t hard to see why.

The scale of the devastation caused by this kind of mining is something I don’t think a lot of people truly understand.

This is what happens when the Market rules. The market value of an ecosystem in Alberta is lower than the market value of the resources to be had from destroying it.

For Free Market advocates, a no-brainer.

I remember getting into an argument with a College Republican over this- the guy asserted, point blank, that there was no environmental damage occurring.

Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend that the landscape has been permanently disfigured because of someone’s job, now or 100 years ago.

But that oil is vital to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, which we’ll achieve by selling to buyers overseas….

And it’s not even worth it from a purely short-term, selfish, Randian economic viewpoint!

Oil Sands Mining Uses Up Almost as Much Energy as It Produces

The average “energy returned on investment,” or EROI, for conventional oil is roughly 25:1. In other words, 25 units of oil-based energy are obtained for every one unit of other energy that is invested to extract it.

But tar sands oil is in a category all its own.

Tar sands retrieved by surface mining has an EROI of only about 5:1, according to research released Tuesday. Tar sands retrieved from deeper beneath the earth, through steam injection, fares even worse, with a maximum average ratio of just 2.9 to 1. That means one unit of natural gas is needed to create less than three units of oil-based energy.

Which of course means that, for tar sands to be profitable for their ultimate owners, the Kochs, oil and gas prices need to stay wallet-wallopingly high.

And the regulations governing its extration have to be incredibly loose to keep costs low to make it profitable.

Senators: V.A. has denied gun rights to more than 100,000 veterans

Under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, any person determined by a government authority to lack the mental capacity to manage his or her own affairs is subject to being prohibited from buying a gun.

The VA’s review process for assigning a fiduciary, however, determines veterans’ ability to manage their finances — not whether they are a danger to themselves or others. the VA assigns fiduciaries to handle disability compensation, pensions, survivors’ compensation and other VA government payments veterans’ behalf.

Sen. Burr, a Republican from North Carolina has joined with Democrat Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia to introduce the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act, which would require a judicial authority to determine whether VA beneficiaries pose a danger to themselves or others before they can be added to the FBI’s NICS database.

“As a matter of fairness, a veteran should be permitted to purchase a firearm under the same conditions as every other American,” said Sen. Webb. “This bipartisan bill ensures consistent guidelines are used for reporting citizens to the FBI, and that no veteran is needlessly stripped of their Second Amendment rights.”

In various forms, the bill has languished in Congress for several years now, but the House passed one version last Tuesday. The legislation has the support of the National Rifle Association.

17 Achilles Tang  Thu, Feb 21, 2013 5:40:48pm

This Keystone/Tar Sands debate always seems to miss a few critical points in American economic politics.

First, the USA does not tell Canada what to do with its land or potential resources and the USA is not the only country they can sell oil to.

Secondly, the Keystone pipeline will carry much domestic oil as well as Canadian, and reduce overall pollution in the process by eliminating much diesel powered transport.

If the Keystone is not built, Canada will continue to do what it is doing and the US will still buy its oil, via tankers, but the Chinese will instead likely offer to fund an alternative pipeline to the west coast of Canada, to ship to China and elsewhere.

This is a matter for Canada, not the USA to decide, and given the realities of economics all one can realistically hope for is that the technology will continue to improve in terms of reducing environmental effects, but to demonstrate and demand shutdown is just plain deluded.

How about offering to compensate Canada by paying them what they would make from the Tar Sands on condition that they shut it all down?//

Put those sarc tags away. For the good of the planet and the future of people everywhere, that would be worth doing.

We could start by not enabling the easier sale of tar sands by building the Keystone XL pipeline.

In truth, the Canadian Tar sands are not the tipping point regarding the future of people everywhere, they are just an obviously visible example.

I repeat, that the keystone pipeline only reduces transport costs (and transport related pollution from trucking) meaning oil company profitability; it does not change the base economics from a Canadian perspective.

Tar sands are the ultimate example of short term gain for horrible long term loss.

No disagreement with the principle; but what it comes down to is if people will dig into their pockets instead of into the ground, so to speak. I am not optimistic about that and only hope for mitigating technology and policies.

What about the economic perspective of our carbon level getting jacked that much higher and all that land tilled under into a chemical cesspool?

If we’re going to monetize the cost of the tar, lets monetize everything.

Everything, such as cities have to be rebuilt/moved, entire regions of ag moving, not to mention more war.

28 SteveMcGazi  Thu, Feb 21, 2013 6:38:34pm

It doesn’t really matter whether the pipeline is built into the US or if it’s built to the coast for China. The problem with depending on oil is not our dependence on foreign oil, it’s the world’s dependence on foreign oil. I used to think that if we had been more efficient with our oil consumption, we may not have been so beholden to the Middle East. The problem is that even if we got our oil locally, all of our economic partners are still buying their oil on the international market.

Sen. Rand Paul ‘not familiar with the details’ of anti-abortion bill he sponsored

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky on Wednesday claimed to be ignorant of the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, even though he sponsored the legislation twice.

At a press event in Kentucky, LEO Weekly asked Paul why he supported the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, but not the Violence Against Women Act. Paul replied he was “not familiar with the details” of the anti-abortion bill.

The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act would make it a federal crime for any adult to transport a minor across state lines to have an abortion without the consent of her parents. Paul cosponsored the bill in 2011 and again in 2013.

Fucking pathetic.

and back to awesome.

Colorado lawmaker tells anti-gay Christians: ‘Get thee to a nunnery’

“Don’t claim religion as a reason the law should discriminate,” state Sen. Pat Steadman (D) said earlier this month. “We have laws against discrimination. Discrimination is banned in employment, and housing, and public accommodations, and so bakeries that serve the public aren’t supposed to look down their noses at one particular class of persons and say ‘we don’t sell cakes to you.’ It’s troubling, this discrimination. And it’s already illegal.”

“So, what to say to those who claim that religion requires them to discriminate?” the Colorado lawmaker continued. “I’ll tell you what I’d say: ‘Get thee to a nunnery!’ And live there then. Go live a monastic life away from modern society, away from people you can’t see as equals to yourself. Away from the stream of commerce where you may have to serve them or employ them or rent banquet halls to them.”

“Go some place and be as judgmental as you like. Go inside your church, establish separate water fountains in there if you want, but don’t claim that free exercise of religion requires the state of Colorado to establish separate water fountains for her citizens. That’s not what we’re doing here.”

Er, when the pipeline ruptures, the resulting leaks and spills will more than make up for that (and yes, I said not if, but when - just see TransCanada’s terrible safety record for yourself)

As for the Chinese and “alternate pipelines”, there’s a metric shitload of opposition to that in Canada itself, especially BC (who would basically have to swallow all the risks of transporting that filth with hardly any of the temporary economic reward)

The video reminds me of something Thomas Jefferson said. “The Earth belongs to the living in usufruction.” Meaning you only own what you own while you are alive and after that whatever you owned belongs to the next bunch. There is no natural law that says the dead should control what happens after they are gone and the piece of earth you “owned” should be left intact for the next person who owns it. We are just a stewards of the land, so go ahead and use it, but don’t F*ck it up for those who will follow.

Everything about our civilization seems to contradict that quote from TJ3. Now the prevailing thought is the Earth is a busted pinata so grab what you can quickly before someone else does.

Experts see no big gain for economy, taxpayers in Scott Walker’s budget proposal

Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed income tax cut is likely too small to help individual taxpayers or the Wisconsin economy but could be large enough to harm the state’s future fiscal soundness, according to experts reacting Thursday to the governor’s 2013-15 budget.

However, some said the cut would send a positive signal, echoing the governor’s budget address on Wednesday.

“The message sent by this cut to businesses and workers will hopefully help keep our best and brightest here, which can only improve the state’s economy and overall quality of life,” said Mike Ford, research director of the free-market Wisconsin Policy Research Institute.

The two-year spending plan calls for a state income tax cut averaging $106 for a family of four earning $80,000 a year. That’s about $2 per week.

For low-income taxpayers, the cut is even more miserly: An estimated $2 a year for those earning less than $21,000, according to an analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy done for the Wisconsin Budget Project. That analysis also showed the wealthiest taxpayers, those earning $374,000 or more, would see a cut of $285

God, this sucks:

WASHINGTON — A veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, former Marine Capt. Timothy Kudo thinks of himself as a killer — and he carries the guilt every day.

“I can’t forgive myself,” he says. “And the people who can forgive me are dead.”

With American troops at war for more than a decade, there’s been an unprecedented number of studies into war zone psychology and an evolving understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder. Clinicians suspect some troops are suffering from what they call “moral injuries” — wounds from having done something, or failed to stop something, that violates their moral code.

Though there may be some overlap in symptoms, moral injuries aren’t what most people think of as PTSD, the nightmares and flashbacks of terrifying, life-threatening combat events. A moral injury tortures the conscience; symptoms include deep shame, guilt and rage. It’s not a medical problem, and it’s unclear how to treat it, says retired Col. Elspeth Ritchie, former psychiatry consultant to the Army surgeon general.

“The concept … is more an existentialist one,” she says.

I like this old piece of Native American wisdom.

We do not inherit the land from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children.

Snow is coming down pretty hard now. It looks like we are getting the ass end of that storm that pounded St. Louis. Snow was swirling over the roadway on the drive in to work, reminded me of the conditions 2 years ago when I had the spinout.

We’re up on the northern edge of it here in Hayward, WI. Light snow right now but with a heavy cloud cover so it’s really grey and gloomy even though we’re only expecting 2 ~ 4 inches of snow. Good for the American Birkebiner cross country ski race tomorrow, I suppose. My knees and back ache just thinking about it.

Well Great. If this freaking sequester thing happens it looks like there might be a 6 month or more delay in my son getting the long term acceptance into the program he was just evaluated for. Damn it. He spent a month up there and it was looking like he’d be home for 3 weeks (he came back yesterday) and then the duckies would be lined up so he could go back and prep for starting the next full semester in college. But noooo, Congressional Idiots decided that this would be a great thing to fuck over Obama with. I realize this is going to effect a ton of people, but honest to god, is it mandatory to include poor and disabled people in that? I guess they just don’t suffer nearly enough or have a hard enough time.

The kiddo told us last night he wants to major in Criminal Justice and Sociology, maybe work for the GBI or FBI someday. This is the first time he’s actually voiced a plan for what he wants to do with his life. If this gets derailed I am going to become a force to be reckoned with.

Oh, and my husband just found out he’s being let go from his job a week from today. The company is shutting down it’s GA operation entirely and they aren’t moving those jobs anywhere else. The third job loss in 5 years. Yay.

Which is hilarious since Amanda has been targeted repeatedly by wingnuts for being an evildemondebil feminist. Now I thought the definition of feminist was someone who put women’s rights as a top priority and considers men and women to be equal, not just under the law but in all other areas of life too. So that would include gun ownership right along with equal pay and anti -discrimination. Morons. All she’s saying is that guns aren’t a magical cure for rape.

re: #86 A Mom Anon

All she’s saying is that guns aren’t a magical cure for rape.

And this is the story wingnuts love to exploit to prove they are:

Rape Survivor: A Call Box Above My Head While I Was Being Brutally Raped Wouldn’t Have Helped (yeah, it’s townhall…sorry I can’t find a different link):

“If I had been carrying that night, two other rapes would have been prevented and a young life would have been saved,” Collins said. “All of these are just sentiments that give a false sense of security. In my experience I know that the university that I attended, the University of Nevada-Reno, they didn’t didn’t have any call boxes the night I was attacked. They afterwards installed them but I can tell you that a call box above my head while I was straddled on the parking garage floor being brutally raped wouldn’t have helped me one bit. The safe zone? I was in a safe zone and my attacker didn’t care,” Collins said. “It’s known that I could see the police cruisers less than 50 feet away from me, from where I was being attacked but the moment I saw those cruisers, I knew at the same time that no one was coming for me….they were all off duty. The offices had closed. They weren’t in their cruisers, there was no one there. A whistle wouldn’t have gotten anybody’s attention. It was isolated, it was late at night. It’s really frustrating that I’m supposed to hand over my own protection to a man but they’re not able to guarantee our protection and the comments that this representative made about women not knowing if they’re going to be raped or accidentally shooting the wrong person was extremely offensive because he specifically targeted female students. So, is he saying that all women are unable to make sound decisions in the midst of that, that we should go against our God given gut instinct that something was wrong? I knew something was wrong the moment I was grabbed from behind.”

She was attacked by this evil creep, and it’s entirely understandable why she’d feel the way she does - “if I only I’d had a gun, I could have saved myself and others”. If you parse her statement above, however, I’m sure you can see several other factors, like lousy campus security, that contributed to her assault. Plus, the rapist always has the element of surprise on their side, and he grabbed her from behind - this goes to something else that’s been bothering me - how is a gun supposed to effectively protect you in a “close combat” scenario? Unless the other person is completely still and you already have it at their head, you need space to be able to grab, wield and aim it effectively. If grabbed from behind and restrained, you can’t even get to the gun in the first place (unless the NRA is expecting you to walk around with it in hand, ready to fire at a moment’s notice)

re: #96 Interesting Times

At that point, that gun is going to wind up in the rapist/attackers hands and has more of a chance of being used against you or in another crime than she would have defending herself. Not to mention that for it to be even close to feasible in her scenario, it would need to be loaded, with 1 in the chamber (if it’s a semi-auto like a Glock) and/or cocked and ready to fire (in which case there’s way more of a likelihood of an accidental shooting in any type of scenario).

I sympathize with her, but the mindset there is wrong.

You know, women can do all the things we’re taught to do from birth, you know the list: don’t go out at night alone, don’t dress too sexy, don’t leave your doors unlocked, don’t drink to much or party too much, etc, etc, etc, and even doing that rape still happens to women who follow all the “rules”. So maybe the problem isn’t the victims, you know it might be THE RAPISTS.

Where are all the rules for men to follow?(and yes, I know that rape happens to men, but more often than not it’s at the hands of other men). Maybe we ought to be teaching men to stand up and say that the jokes aren’t ok, that it’s not entertainment, that women are people and not playthings. I know there are many, many wonderful men who already do these things, but it’s not helping to combat the problem and the stereotypes. If it was socially unacceptable to be a fucking asshole instead of it being rewarded so often that might be a start. Like it or not, as women we need to begin being more accepting of the fact that we need men to combat this, and there should be (IMO) more of an effort to include them in this fight in larger numbers. This isn’t a women’s issue, it’s a HUMAN issue.

Avoid, Escape, Evade. You usually see the last two switched, but when I taught I decided that my way made more sense (go figure). Anyway, There are half a dozen basic moves that if practiced and used will get you out of the majority of grabs and tackles. I always insisted that every move end with a sprint. Ten steps lead gives enough room to start thinking whether to continue fleeing, to draw whistle or taser or spray or gun, to start calling for help.

But unless the attacker telegraphs his attack early enough there isn’t time to draw.

And sitting as “invisible tech” at a sexual abuse round table… went home and asked my mother and my sister if they’d ever been raped or sexually assaulted, got “yes” and a refusal to discuss further.

I’m still blind and stupid a lot more than I should be, yet I’m appalled at the ignorance I see among the privileged.

An eye opener for me about race was when I got harassed by a couple of NJ Transit cops on a train out of NYC. I had hair down to my shoulders at time, and had my feet up on the seat.

These two guys eyeballed me 3 times and then asked me to step into the vestibule. I was then informed that a person matching my description was seen in Manhattan purchasing drugs, and if I got rid of them now, there’d be no trouble.

Needless to say, I was pretty pissed. To this day, the only recreational drug I’ve used is alcohol. Told these two that and got laughed at, and then was free to go.

It literally dawned on me right then and there, “God, can you imagine having to go through that every week? Every day? So that’s what minorities complain about regarding the police.”

You’re experience with your mom and sis makes me wonder if I’ve been missing something in my own family as well.

Was Chelyabinsk meteor actually a meteor? Many Russians don’t think so.

A recent newspaper poll found nearly half of its readers believe that the event could be anything from a divine message to UFOs to a US weapons test.

…A survey published today by the fairly staid Moscow daily Noviye Izvestia found that barely half its readers believe the official report that the blast was caused by a meteor.

…According to the newspaper, the other half prefer to believe in an assortment of bizarre explanations, including that the blast was a secret US weapon test, an off-course ballistic missile, a message from God, a crashing alien spaceship, or even an extraterrestrial trojan horse carrying a deadly space virus to wipe out the Earth.

Heh.

re: #151 darthstar

Saw that. Backhanded swipe at President Obama too (since Obama’s a HLS grad). Of course, there’s faculty who dispute Cruz’s claims, notably one who indicates that his numbers are wrong and another who indicates that Cruz’s recollections come into conflict with his own statements on a Latino HLS publication:

“We are puzzled by the Senator’s assertions, as we are unaware of any basis for them,” Robb London, a spokesman for Harvard Law School, told me. London noted that Cruz had contributed “warm reminiscences“ of the school by video for a reunion of Latino alumni. “We applaud the fact that he has pursued public service, as so many of our graduates have done. We are also proud of our longstanding tradition of freedom of speech and the robust range of views and debates on our campus.”

Harvard Law School Professor Charles Fried, a Republican who served as Ronald Reagan’s Solicitor General from 1985 to 1989, and who subsequently taught Cruz at the law school, suggests that his former student has his facts wrong. “I can right offhand count four “out” Republicans (including myself) and I don’t know how many closeted Republicans when Ted, who was my student and the editor on the Harvard Law Review who helped me with my Supreme Court foreword, was a student here.”

Fried went on to say that unlike Cruz, or McCarthy, who infamously kept tallies of alleged subversives, he had never tried to count Communists. “I have not taken a poll, but I would be surprised if there were any members of the faculty who ‘believed in the Communists overthrowing the U.S. government,’” he said. Under the Smith Act, it is a crime to actively engage in any organization pursuing the overthrow of the U.S. government.

Fried acknowledged that “there were a certain number (twelve seems to me too high) who were quite radical, but I doubt if any had allegiance or sympathy with anything called ‘the Communists,’ who at that time (unlike the thirties and forties) were in quite bad odor among radical intellectuals.” He pointed out that by the nineteen-nineties, Communist states were widely regarded as tyrannical. From Fried’s perspective, the radicals on the faculty were “a pain in the neck.” But he says that Cruz’s assertion that they were Communists “misunderstands what they were about.”

It may be that Cruz was referring to a group of left-leaning law professors who supported what they called Critical Legal Studies, a method of critiquing the political impact of the American legal system. Professor Duncan Kennedy, for instance, a leader of the faction, who declined to comment on Cruz’s accusation, counts himself as influenced by the writings of Karl Marx. But he regards himself as a social democrat, not a Communist, and has never advocated the overthrow of the U.S. government by Communists. Rather, he advocated widening admissions at the law school to under-served populations, hiring more minorities and women on the faculty, and paying all law professors equally.

Not particularly surprising that Cruz would conflate CLS with communism. Behind every door is a conspiracy to communism in the eyes of the modern GOP. Wish that was sarcasm, but when you hear the rhetoric on a daily basis - that’s the only conclusion you can reach.

Scandal drags down Menendez’s approval rating

Investigations into Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., have yet to lead to any official charges of wrongdoing, but the controversy — which revolves around his ties to a political donor and the allegation he solicited prostitutes in the Dominican Republic — is still taking a toll on his approval rating.

Just 36 percent of New Jersey voters approve of the job Menendez is doing, while 41 percent disapprove, according to a new Quinnipiac poll, conducted Feb. 13-17.

That’s a 15-point drop from Quinnipiac’s Jan. 23 poll, when 51 percent of voters approved of the job Menendez is doing. News of FBI investigations linked to Menendez began to emerge about a week after that, when the FBI raided the West Palm Beach, Fla., office of doctor Salomon Melgen. Melgen, who was accused of improperly billing Medicare nearly $9 million, is a close friend and donor of Menendez’s.

Their home page cites his non-existent 23 anti-2A executive orders. The ‘23’ is the number of internal Executive Branch suggestions gathered in the anti-slaughter effort. A small number of them could be framed as future EOs, which apply only to the operation of Executive Branch agencies.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

“This Land Is Your Land” is one of the United States’ most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in critical response to Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”, which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called “God Blessed America”.[1] Guthrie varied the lyrics over time, sometimes including more overtly political verses in line with his sympathetic views of communism,[2] than appear in recordings or publications.

Congressman speculates Cuba may be behind Menendez scandal

TRENTON — U.S. Rep. Albio Sires today defended Sen. Robert Menendez and presented an unusual theory why the senator finds himself battling lurid accusations.

“I won’t even be surprised if somehow the Cuban government is involved in this to try to damage Bob Menendez because he’s been so steadfast against the Castro government. He’s been a critic all his political life,” Sires said in a phone interview. “I would not be surprised if they are behind some of this stuff, some of these allegations. The Dominican Republic has a lot of relationships with Cuba.”

Sires, who like Menendez (D-N.J). is Cuban-American, succeeded him in the House when Menendez was elevated to the Senate.

The supposed prostitution scandal is a smear campaign from the Dominican Republican using less than trustworthy “witnesses”. They have little to no credence, but they’ve got the salaciousness so they wont go away.

Menendez’s much more immediate problem is relevant to campaign finance issues. He’s already paid back the costs for the round trip flights.

Menendez spokesman Paul Brubaker today said the senator reimbursed Melgen for the flights on Melgen’s private jet until Jan. 4 of this year. Both were round trips — one between Florida and the Dominican Republic in August 2010, and one between Teterboro and the Dominican Republic in September 2010.

The total amount Menendez (D-N.J.) paid back was $58,500 , Brubaker said.

On Nov. 3 of last year, state Sen. Sam Thompson, who chairs the Middlesex County Republican Committee, wrote to the Senate Select Committee on Ethics to request an investigation of Menendez’s flights to the Caribbean nation. Thompson’s letter came after a conservative blog posted allegations from two anonymous women it said were prostitutes who said they had sex with Menendez in the Dominican Republic.

“In the weeks that ensued, after that very extensive review which was a time consuming laborious project, the issue of these two trips came up, and the senator had basically consulted with the campaign’s legal counsel and found that he had two options,” said Brubaker. “Basically he could, according to Senate ethics rules, use an exemption under the personal friendship rule, or simply pay the reimbursements for the flights. In order to just demonstrate full compliance he decided to pay the reimbursement.”

Senate rules, however, only allow members to claim the personal friendship exemption for gifts valued under $250. Otherwise they must seek written approval from the ethics committee.

As I noted above, the allegations about the prostitution aren’t substantiated, but the rules about the flights were such that he should either have gotten clearance from the ethics committee or paid for them. He ended up paying for the flights.

What else explains Menendez’s dip in the polls? Gee, it could be that he’s not seen as being as delivering on Sandy reconstruction aid as others in the NJ delegation, including Sen. Lautenberg, Pallone, Pascrell, or even Garrett, let alone Christie. As a result, he’s seen as a weak link.

/disclosure statement: I’ve never thought much of Menendez and his legislative abilities, let alone the ability to protect the state’s interests. The sooner the state’s Democrats can find a replacement, the better.

Kara Vandereyk Arrested: Woman Caught Having Sex With A Pit Bull In Las Vegas [MUGSHOT]

Kara Vandereyk, a Las Vegas woman, was arrested on Tuesday after police found her having sex with a pit bull dog in her yard in front of her neighbors.

Police said they found 23-year-old Vandereyk around 11 a.m. having sex with a dog in the yard of a home in Sin City.

According to the arrest report released on Wednesday, police said Vandereyk was naked and on the ground when they arrived. By the time Vandereyk saw the officers, she greeted them saying, “Hi,” and touched the dog sexually, police said.

Vandereyk was given a blanket to cover up when she arrested and booked, charged with open and gross lewdness. She was also given clothing by a neighbor before she was taken to the Clark County Jail.

In Nevada, bestiality is not prohibited by law, but another law deems animal abuse and cruelty a felony.

The pit bull dog was taken by animal control officers.

I think they need to update the laws there in Nevada.

FBI: Armed Neo-Nazi supporter put metro-Detroit Jewish and civil rights leaders on a hit list

Detroit (WXYZ) - In December the FBI arrested a man named Richard Schmidt. Investigators say he is a Neo-Nazi supporter and a convicted felon.

Now we are learning the Ohio man may have been planning to target some metro-Detroit leaders.

The FBI recently notified Detroit NAACP President Wendell Anthony and Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Executive Director Scott Kaufman that their names were on a hit list found in Schmidt’s belongings.
“We get threats all the time in terms of the work that we do…NAACP, Social Justice, Civil Rights…but this was different,” said Anthony.

The FBI says it appears that Schmidt, 47, planned to attack soon.

He should not have had any guns under the law, but when they raided his home and business they found he was heavily armed.

“We owe the FBI and our other law enforcement partners our thanks that they caught this man with 18 firearms- some of them assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition and a bulletproof vest stored in a locked room in a mall, before anyone was hurt,” said Steven M Dettelbach, United States Attorney in a press release.

The Courts have pretty much written out the “well regulated militia” out of the Second, even as they’ve reiterated time and again that reasonable regulation is allowed under the Second. The Second is not an absolute prohibition against regulation of firearms in the US.

Even Heller indicated as much (with Scalia writing the opinion no less) - and comports with Miller. Yet, the NRA and other gun rights absolutists think that the feds have no such rights, or if they do, they’re going to come and confiscate all your guns.

It’s on… the 48 window has passed and it’s Hezbollah vs al-Qaeda.

Free Syrian Army began bombing Hezbollah targets at border regions

Free Syrian Army said its fighters began bombing Hezbollah targets at the border regions of Syria and Lebanon after the 48 hours has expired, Colonel Hisam al-Avvak of the Free Syrian Army told Anatolia news agency.

“We have bombed the territories of Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria. The Free Syrian Army will continue bombing these positions,” Col. Hisam al-Avvak said.

Al-Avvak also threatened that the FSA would target Hezbollah strongholds in the south of Beirut and on South Lebanon, unless the group stops its joint operations with the Syrian army forces.

Some media sources, in particular Iranian media, mentioned that the attack happened less than a day after the Free Syrian Army had given Hezbollah 48 hours to halt the shelling against territory under the control of the FSA. However, the FSA confirmed through its website that Hezbollah continued its attacks on Syrian civilians to put fear and terror in their hearts, pushing them to the brink of despair. After the 48 hours, several Hezbollah sites were bombed inside Syrian territory and on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

re: #251 NJDhockeyfan

If that article and report are accurate, then the Lebanese government (which also includes representatives from Hizbullah) can take the matter of the attacks to the UN. Hizbullah, as a proxy for Assad, could find this in their interests because it would get the FSA to stop operating in certain areas and give Assad’s force wider latitude to act. By same token, Hizbullah wouldn’t necessarily want to have conflict spread to Lebanon, where they already have semi-autonomy and a vested interest in power. Spillover is happening because Lebanon’s military simply can’t deal with the civil war across the border, and they’re receiving refugees from that fighting.

At same time, FSA has interest in seeing the conflict as not just an internal conflict but an international one since it could get the UN more directly involved in ousting Assad.

In other words, both FSA and Hizbullah have a potential interest in seeing an internationalization of the conflict but for diametrically opposite reasons:

1) Hizbullah wants internationalization to get FSA to stop, bolstering Assad’s chances and preserving Hizbullah’s power base in Lebanon.

2) FSA wants internationalization to thwart Hizbullah’s support of Assad and cutting off supply chain across Southwestern Syria and limiting Assad’s power in that part of the country.

They could draw in Israel or they could reignite a Lebanese civil war again. As a proxy for Iran they are poised to cause as much chaos as possible if the need arises.

re: #262 Killgore Trout

I don’t see Israel being drawn in. Even when there’s been Syrian shelling that has impacted on Israeli controlled territory in the Golan, Israel’s response has been limited to a few counter battery rounds.

Israel’s made it clear to Assad and his loyalists that attacks against Israel wont be tolerated. At same time, Israel’s not likely to get drawn in to fighting wrt to Lebanon unless Hizbullah opened up a new round of fighting and that would undermine Hizbullah’s standing in both Lebanon and Syria.

It wouldn’t help Assad’s long term chances since Israel would see that as reason to go after Assad in a way that the FSA and rebel forces haven’t - and Israeli air power could tip the balance against Assad, undermining one of Hizbullah’s key allies. Hizbullah wouldn’t want to jeopardize their chances in Lebanon either until the situation in Syria stabilizes either. They have far more to lose with another round with Israel at this point than by waiting.

Hitler, Frankenstein Compete in Indian Local Elections

Adolf Hitler is running for election in a state in northeast India – and he’s going up against Frankenstein.

Adolf Lu Hitler-Marak and Frankenstein Momin are competing against candidates named Process, Highlander, Predecessor and Fairly Bert in the Meghalaya state’s legislative assembly elections this weekend.

The region’s unusual names stem from the state’s close historical links with Britain, explains Agence France-Presse: in colonial times, missionaries and soldiers would visit the hilly state’s capital Shillong, known as the “Scotland of the East,” to escape the overbearing heat of much of the country, and its residents began naming their children with random English words as a nod to that influence.

“Often they don’t know the background of the names. They get attracted to these names for their quest of modernity,” Sanjeeb Kakoty, a history professor at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong, told AFP.

It’s why certain parts of the world remain terrorist recruitment hotbeds of activity.

That includes Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan’s frontier provinces, etc., and weak governments or struggling governments in places like Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Lebanon face a terror threat.

FSA isn’t a united group, but a group of different factions that have their own interests in mind. They agree that Assad needs to be ousted, but what comes next is hardly agreed upon. AQ could definitely try to exploit that situation.

Courtesy of Indiana RTL spokeshack Sue Swayze in reference to invasive ultrasound procedures required by proposed legislation:

As part of the new protocol for administering a medication abortion, legislative bill SB 371 would require not only that a patient undergo a likely mandatory forced trans-vaginal ultrasound prior to receiving the medication to induce abortion, but another vaginal ultrasound during her mandated follow up two weeks after the abortion.

Swayze is now responding to critics who claim the multiple unnecessary probings are invasive.

Saying “she doesn’t understand the problem with the procedure,” Swayze told Brandon Smith of WBAA, “I got pregnant vaginally. Something else could come in my vagina for a medical test that wouldn’t be that intrusive to me. So I find that argument a little ridiculous.”

re: #275 Bulworth

They made up a SSN for PBO and then made up another SSN for some other dude from 100 yrs ago, and when they compared both made up numbers, low and behold, they were the same.

You can’t explain that!

Has Breitbart.com not picked up on this yet? This is the perfect story for them to promote!

well if video games lead to gun violence, might it be the case that some sort of easily accessible Internet videos are contributing to sexual assault?

Sweet djesus h. christ (the h is silent):

Courtesy of Indiana RTL spokeshack Sue Swayze in reference to invasive ultrasound procedures required by proposed legislation:

Saying “she doesn’t understand the problem with the procedure,” Swayze told Brandon Smith of WBAA, “I got pregnant vaginally. Something else could come in my vagina for a medical test that wouldn’t be that intrusive to me. So I find that argument a little ridiculous.”

….Well, good thing to know she didn’t get pregnant folding her husband’s boxer shorts….

Lady, just because you have absolutely no problem with strangers sticking strange objects up your (insert your favorite term for vagina here) doesn’t mean it’s perfectly o.k. with every other member of your sex. Stupid argument, even dumber person.

That is just some of the dumbest shit I’ve seen right there. Just because you got no problem with something doesn’t mean it’s not terribly intrusive to somebody else.

It seems like this story is repeated every few months except with a different mayor.

Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield arrested on federal bribery charges

JACKSON, Mississippi — Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield has been arrested on a federal bribery charge based on allegations he sought a $10,000 payment for a city contract.

The 39-year-old Democrat was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate judge in U.S. District Court in Jackson on Thursday afternoon.

…Daniel McMullen, the FBI special agent in charge in Mississippi, said in a news release that Winfield was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his home. He was held overnight in the Madison County Jail in Canton.

If convicted, Winfield could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Well, if true I would have grave concerns about that. And until my grave concerns are met I will continue to have grave concerns. I hope others will be as gravely concerned as I am concerned.

That’s up somewhere in the 100s in this thread I think. There’s just…I mean the irony/hypocrisy/whatever you want to call it. I can’t wrap my head around it.

Nugent’s either an authentic whacko or a certified trolling genius (because I can’t wrap my mind around that shit at all).

Her basic argument:

“That slut had no problem opening her legs the first time. She shouldn’t bitch now.”

What right wing sexism?

Yep.

I keep asking myself: doesn’t it take two to make a woman pregnant? so how come only the woman has to pay the price?

They also avoid the point that by adding additional unnecessary and invasive tests, it also increases the costs both for the tests and the time off it takes to get them. With the extremely limited number of clinics today, many women have to travel some distance as well. Anything to make obtaining a legal abortion that much more difficult and unaffordable.

And now you know why we have feminism.
