All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace
by Richard Brautigan
I like to think (and
the sooner the better!)
of a cybernetic meadow
where mammals and computers
live together in mutually
programming harmony
like pure water
touching clear sky.
I like to think
(right now, please!)
of a cybernetic forest
filled with pines and electronics
where deer stroll peacefully
past computers
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms.
I like to think
(it has to be!)
of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
and joined back to nature,
returned to our mammal
brothers and sisters,
and all watched over
by machines of loving grace.

I can’t view the video above until I get home, but I can see this one:
(*Caution! Naked Human Butts!*)
One scene makes sense out of
‘where deer stroll peacefully
past computers
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms.’
for those who don’t remember the computers of 1967.

Appalling: LA Cardinal at center of sex abuse scandal compares himself to Jesus
I have tried to live out-poorly and inadequately far too often-his two implications of humiliation:
1. the acceptance of being scapegoated, pointing out the necessary connection between humiliation and redemption;
2. this scandal is putting us, the clergy and the church, where we belong-with the excluded ones; Jesus was painted with the same brush as the two thieves crucified with him.
This is in response to his intention to travel to Italy to vote for the next Pope despite allegations against him.
His statement offends me on so many levels I won’t even comment further on it, except to say that my already low opinion of the Catholic church has sunk even lower.

On a more tender note I am sick with a bad cold at the moment and my wife is out for the evening and quite miss her, so I decided to write this for her just now:
Come to me my precious one,
amid the sweet twilight.
I’m hurting and I need your healing,
I need your love tonight.
The aches roll through my body,
like the waves bouncing off the sand,
I feel strangely incomplete,
a weakened, half made man.
But as the coughs consume me,
and relief seems far from sight,
I can’t deny I want you with me,
I need your love tonight.
There’s no need to call a doctor,
I don’t want a bunch of pills.
All I need is you beside me,
to ease away my ills.
I hope that I’ll be feeling better,
at the dawn of morning light,
but for now here in the darkness,
I need your love tonight.
It’s clear that I’m not perfect,
but I took a solemn vow,
and I know I’ve never loved you more,
than I deeply do right now.
All I seek is a speck of peace,
a little brief respite,
If only you were in my arms,
I need your love tonight.

LA Cardinal Roger Mahony claims he didn’t know how to deal with sex abuse claims
A US Catholic cardinal stripped of his duties said Friday he didn’t know how to handle sex abuse claims, as he had not learned about it at college—drawing withering criticism from victims.
Retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony wrote on his blog that he was not taught about child sexual abuse, a day after was relieved of all administrative and public duties” by the current archbishop of LA.

As I’ve mentioned before, my project this year is working on genealogy… so I’m going through US census records tracking down one g-g-grandfather, about whom I know quite a bit, and realize how fortunate we are to live in a country that was willing to actually take records of its citizens.
This gets me back to the anti-census wingnut outrages of 2010 - those people are so deep into their own hatred (and existential crisis about which they are in total denial) that they couldn’t accept that gathering information is much more productive than destructive.

European countries are quite diverse when it comes to these things.
As far as Denmark - it depends upon which era you’re looking at. According to my relatives who do that side of the family, I too have ancestors in Denmark but they are waaayyy back, and we know about them because the Norwegians kept so many records including marriages with others.
Have you been in contact with genealogical societies in Denmark? Some of these European countries even put their records online, and some (like Norway) even have English language web pages to be front ends, as they know many Americans search for this data.

My aunt has been searching for years. My grandfather came over from the Jutland area around 1920. I met a Danish woman a few years ago who had the same problem chasing her family tree before she moved to the US. One of her uncles who had a lot of time on his hands went from church to church searching though the records they have kept. If I had the time (and could read Danish) I would love the adventure of doing the same thing.

Iran says it has brought down a spy drone ‘of the enemy’
LONDON - Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have brought down a foreign surveillance drone during a military exercise, the official Islamic Republic News Agency said on Saturday.
“We have managed to bring down a drone of the enemy. This has happened before in our country,” the agency quoted war games spokesman General Hamid Sarkheli as saying in Kerman, southeast Iran, where the military exercise is taking place.
The agency gave no details on who the drone belonged to.

The Iranian space and nuclear weapons programs have hit opposition from a new, unexpected source. Animal rights activists around the world have united in the common cause to stop Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime launching any more primates into space.
“Clearly the Iranians don’t give a monkey’s butt for animal welfare,” said Mickey Katz, a spokeswoman for FETA (Fanatics for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). “It’s one thing when they threaten the ‘Zionist dogs’ all the time – without taking into consideration the feelings of canines anywhere in the world – and it’s another thing completely when they start launching primates into the atmosphere.”
Asked about the possibility that the photographs of the Iranian monkey turned astronaut were fake, Katz answered: “We noticed the signs of monkey business in the photos with a great deal of concern. It’s possible they are just aping the Americans and other capitalist pigs but we are worried that they did launch a monkey and it didn’t survive.
“Incidentally,” he added, “we’d like to remind people that making a wish on a dead monkey’s paw is dangerous. You should always be careful what you wish for.”

Derp. They can deny it all day long but the fact remains that the VA isn’t going to be taking veterans guns away. There’s an already existing provision to the ‘93 Brady bill that does attempt to prevent gun ownership by people who are judged mentally incompetent enrolled in the VA. Video of tiny, squeaking frog drives dogs crazy
The frog was found and filmed by naturalist Dean Boshoff, who was walking past a sand dune in South Africa when he heard an insistent squeaking.

Neither, apparently, can many dogs.
“When Dean posted the video, he asked others to share their pets’ reactions,” said Moos. The resulting video clips have shown dogs butting computers with their heads, running around in circles and even trying to make off with one user’s smart phone.

Cute as newborns, aloof as adults. Such are all felines.
Depends on the cat and it depends on the person. Cats will bond with particular people in a household. Some are lap cats that will always want to jump on your lap. Sometimes your back. Purring away kneading the dough. Indoor/outdoor cats not so much.

Soldier Helps Bring Rescue Afghan Stray Cat Home
…PIA has become a constant companion to me, I ensure she was fed, rounded up funds to get her fixed and her shots…and she reminds me how wonderful I do have a home back in the US, and the love and support my family has provided me through these rough times.
I have had some down days, missing them, and as I sit outside thinking of home, this little cat with the biggest heart knows when to cuddle up in my arms, as I think of my family and the warmth and laughter in my home. I know, without a doubt, my morale has been picked up by PIA’s love and loyalty to a big guy in a place far away from his loved ones….I would think the only right thing to do is bring her back to my family, especially my daughter who has been asking about her since the day I shared her story with them…

Dozens arrested after fight outside Ford City Mall
February 23, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) — More than a dozen young people have been arrested after an event gets out of hand outside Ford City Mall.
There were Chicago police officers inside the mall, but witnesses say they were simply outnumbered.
Signs were thrown, vehicles were damaged in the parking lot, as many as 20 people were arrested and two people were treated for minor injuries.
A video posted on YouTube shows a fight outside Ford City Mall, just part of the chaos that ensued.

YAHOO! PROPRIETARY AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION — DO NOT FORWARD
Yahoos,
Over the past few months, we have introduced a number of great benefits and tools to make us more productive, efficient and fun. With the introduction of initiatives like FYI, Goals and PB&J, we want everyone to participate in our culture and contribute to the positive momentum. From Sunnyvale to Santa Monica, Bangalore to Beijing — I think we can all feel the energy and buzz in our offices.
To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.
Beginning in June, we’re asking all employees with work-from-home arrangements to work in Yahoo! offices. If this impacts you, your management has already been in touch with next steps. And, for the rest of us who occasionally have to stay home for the cable guy, please use your best judgment in the spirit of collaboration. Being a Yahoo isn’t just about your day-to-day job, it is about the interactions and experiences that are only possible in our offices.
Thanks to all of you, we’ve already made remarkable progress as a company — and the best is yet to come.

The Stop the Killer Robots campaign will be launched in April at the House of Commons and includes many of the groups that successfully campaigned to have international action taken against cluster bombs and landmines. They hope to get a similar global treaty against autonomous weapons.
“These things are not science fiction; they are well into development,” said Sharkey. “The research wing of the Pentagon in the US is working on the X47B which has supersonic twists and turns with a G-force that no human being could manage, a craft which would take autonomous armed combat anywhere in the planet.
From Killer robots must be stopped, say campaigners.
The X-47B is just another CUAV. It has a range of 2,100 NM. Technically it can’t go anywhere “in the planet” without refueling.

So freaking frustrating at times. If you send off an X-47B on an automated mission it’s no different than when Bill Clinton was firing off cruise missiles to some aspirin plant in Africa. That’s a human decision. Autonomous would imply an intelligent system that decides the targets on its own.

X-47B takes to skies for first time
That’s the only automated part. It’s no different than current missile systems. I have no doubt that it would be monitored. But as it stands it would have to be programmed to the target. Say for like a Khartoum arms factory that is sending weapons to destroy Israel.

Okay, but it bears considering what you’re talking about is only a trivial software update away. How would you even know when it’s been made? The capability already exists in Samsung’s robotic sentry guns to automatically track, classify and engage targets. Not always practical, given the limits of the data link. There are some cases, such as an ECM heavy environment, where you might well need to simply assign a unit its target and then let it act on its own because you can’t control it near its target.

re: #179 goddamnedfrank
Think about a simple hypothetical. We send an automated XB 47 on a ground attack mission against a specific target, but along the way it is engaged by an air defense radar system. It’s an expensive platform and sooner or later as we invest more and more money into expanding the capabilities of unmanned systems it’s going to be very tempting to give them the ability to react defensively to events in their environment. So let’s say we’ve armed it with anti radiation missiles and given it permission to automatically target hostile ground radar installations that engage it along the way. This might seem reasonable at first blush, except this radar system is located near a school, hospital or other civilian target.
We deal inexpertly enough with collateral damage and consequences when it’s inflicted by human judgement calls. So again, considering the trivial nature of the software updates necessary, the cost of the systems at risk and political fallout potential, will we even be allowed to know when machines are allowed to autonomously decide upon specific use of force actions?
re: #182 Varek Raith
Simple really, a person should always pull the trigger.
People often say simple to describe something riddled with intrinsic nuance simplistically. How exactly will you know what should be happening is what’s actually happening, faith?
In the sense of pure technological capability we crossed this line a long time ago with the Mark 60 CAPTOR sea mines that can be set to passively listen for enemy ship signatures and then launch torpedoes on their own authority.

But this is just more simplism. What if the hostile radar doesn’t belong to a current enemy but drags a neutral third party into the conflict near a disputed border?
There’s a reason we want humans making these kinds of decisions, because they’re actually self aware. Consequences often have a way of quickly outstripping whatever rationale ostensibly justified the decision or event creating them.

There’s a reason we want humans making these kinds of decisions, because they’re actually self aware.
The main reason, in my opinion, is that of “who takes responsiblity for the decisions that led to these actions?”
And it is a grat delusion of human decision making that we make decisions based on reason. We often make gut reactions and then retroactively justify these actions in our mind to make it seem as if they were rational.

I’m not sure that’s a good philosophy.
It’s accepted under international military law. Anti-radiation missiles aren’t dumb bombs, and can be set to self destruct if they are unable to locate the target they were launched at.

I think the Book of Esther would make a kick-ass movie, if done in the style of Mel Brooks or the Coen Brothers. Not that totally lame-ass version done a couple of years ago that had Peter O’Toole and the guy who played “Gimli” from Lord of the Rings. That one sucked.

British academic discovers a 500-year-old arrest warrant for Machiavelli
A British academic stumbled across a rare find while combing through historical archives in Florence: an arrest warrant for the famous Italian writer and strategist Niccolò Machiavelli, dated to 1513 and subsequently forgotten.
“When I saw it I knew exactly what it was and it was pretty exciting,” said Manchester University professor Stephen Milner in a university press release.
“When you realize this document marked the fall from grace of one the world’s most influential political writers, it’s quite a feeling.”
The academic had been looking through town criers proclamations when he stumbled upon the document, says the Independent, as well as documents securing the pay of the horsemen who hunted for the political writer in Florence.

Obdi, your thoughts?
Just my usual: I think The Prince was satire or an intentionally flawed work, and I’m always annoyed when people don’t mention that it probably was. The facts of the story are accurate— Machiavelli was tortured and imprisoned by the Medici.
He was a very pro-republican (old meaning) author and the likelihood of The Prince just being a cynical attempt to get back in favor is low.

Egyptians put behind bars for shaking it ‘Harlem-style’ in their undies
Egyptian police said on Saturday that they had arrested four students who filmed themselves publicly dancing to the song “Harlem Shake” in their underwear, news agency AFP reported.
“Harlem Shake”, the latest dance craze has gripped the world, with everyone from children to adults sharing wacky videos of them doing the dance, on YouTube.
According to a police officer: “The four pharmaceutical students shocked residents of a middle class Cairo neighborhood when they removed most of their clothes and videotaped themselves performing the pelvis-thrusting dance.”
“The hostile audience tried to assault the students, who are accused of committing “a scandalous act,” the official added.
Egypt has strict public indecency laws.

Simply put, among other things, he advises that a prince live in the city he governs, arm the citizens, and he advises harshness over liberality to the extent that that armed citizenry would rebel. The successful ‘princes’ of the time tended to be the bread-and-circuses type who were very liberal with their citizens and didn’t put many restrictions on civil liberties (by the standards of the time) and Machiavelli advises the opposite. He also advises being harsh and cruel to your own military men, which would heighten the chances that the military would join in the revolt.

Supporters mark Manning’s 1000th day in prison
FORT LEAVENWORTH, Ks. — Supporters of the man arrested for leaking classified government documents held rallies across the globe Saturday. They are criticizing what they call his unjust persecution on the 1000th day of his time in prison without a trial.
One demonstration was held in front of the entrance to Fort Leavenworth. It is one of 40 international demonstrations, all in support of Pfc. Bradley Manning.
“He’s a truth teller and were here to support Bradley and anyone willing to tell the truth about what this government is doing,” said Nicholas Battles, a supporter.
…However, the group has also seen its share of opposition. Some drivers of the cars passing by the demonstration Saturday yelled “Go home!” And some opponents have described Manning as a traitor.

Wait. This is all still pre-trial?
Yes.
Part of the pre-trial was a review to see if some or all the confinement was unlawful. It was determined to be so and a bit over 100 days will be applied to the sentencing. In some ways I’m ok, with that, in others I think it should have been closer to 600 days and a couple of people in the system need reviewed and maybe removed.
I think Manning was a jerk who violated the law. At the same time I think a lot of excessive punitive action was done, violating both letter and spirit of our judicial system. I sort of get the impression that the agents of the government have only recently recalled that everything, not just the conviction and sentence, can get reviewed by the SCOTUS. It’s caused some sudden changes in behavior, not least is finally getting the trial process underway.
It’s another Roper situation. I hate them, but understand their necessity.
William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!
Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?
William Roper: Yes, I’d cut down every law in England to do that!
Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ‘round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man’s laws, not God’s! And if you cut them down, and you’re just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake!

Remember that he is not quite under “our” judicial system, but the UCMJ variant. SCOTUS has been traditionally shy about bumping into it. The joke would be that the DoD might screw around until he’s reviewed by a much more liberal mix of justices.

Well, in most places that depends on what trees you’re talking about. Most trees around Chicagoland are of moderate height, but we’ve still got a few Elm trees that are just plain huge. Not gigantic, of course; For gigantic you’ve got to head out Obdi’s way.

But to insist that their way is the only “right” way to do it is being judgemental and hypocritical.
But we are dealing with a Great American Tradition: namely that “freedom of religion” implies the right to impose your religious beliefs on others and judge them for their “failure” to live up to them.

Yunno, I had this old 60’s radical buddy who explained that the motto “free love” was misinterpreted: “free” is not an adjective, but a verb: liberate love from the constraints placed on it by society. Be free to give and share it as you see fit.

Remember that he is not quite under “our” judicial system, but the UCMJ variant. SCOTUS has been traditionally shy about bumping into it. The joke would be that the DoD might screw around until he’s reviewed by a much more liberal mix of justices.
Not so much shy as it’s a bit awkward. (Consider the Gitmo cases.)
You may know already but for the education of interested lizards: Court martials appeal to the appropriate service Court of Criminal Appeals (xCCA, ie ACCA, N-MCCA, AFCCA, and CGCCA) . Those can be appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces (CAAF). If the CAAF hears a mandatory review (such as death penalty), grants discretionary review, or grants relief the SCOTUS can hear an appeal. Otherwise it has to go through collateral review (such as habeas corpus).
Key point, by the way, is that while the xCCA boards are military, the five judges on the CAAF are all civilians who are appointed for fifteen year terms, which can be renewed. It happens that one of the judicial positions the Republicans have been refusing to confirm is a slot on the CAAF, so right now it’s a four-judge panel. We’ve got four more years before the next term ends.

Because that is what makes Fundamentalists so fundamentally f*cked: they do not believe in “consenting adults” or see the Pursuit of Happiness as being anything that does not interfere in other people’s PoH.
They see it, to quote Rick Santorum, as “the freedom to obey God’s will” , or rather, their narrow, bonheaded, highly selective and subjective interpretation of God’s will.

Nidal Hasan is still on trial? Seriously?
Yeah, these trials take forever but it’s not always the fault of the courts or prosecution. In Hassan’s case the defense has been asking for extensions, he’s dicking around with legal arguments about his beard, etc. I think the defense sometimes strings these things out because his confinement conditions are better now than the isolation in supermax he’d destined for. At least now he gets out all the time, gets driven to the court, gets to see people. Once the trial is over he’ll have nothing to do.

Woodward has decades of experience in reporting and analyzing the presidency. The White House replied because than experience causes people in DC to take Woodward seriously. But to call him “willfully wrong” is to call him a liar, and that’s high risk strategy that could easily backfire on the president.

…The US has no business getting allied with nations with which it has basic philosophical differences except under extraordinary circumstances. The $3 billion or so that it sends to Israel every year could be much better spent on roads, bridges, and schools instead of propping up a dictator who whips up paranoia at every opportunity and brings right-wing extremists into government with him in order to cling onto power. There is no clear and present danger to the US that we need to continuously prop up the Israeli dictators with billions of taxpayer dollars in a time when we are considering sequestering trillions of dollars in order to get rid of our massive budget deficit.

Indonesia’s East Kalimantan loses forest area to new province in Borneo
The creation of a new province, North Kalimantan, on Indonesian Borneo, has dramatically reduced the primary forest area in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan province.
The new province, located along the border of Malaysia’s Sarawak, includes the densely-forested Malinau district. With the loss of Malinau and other forested areas, East Kalimantan’s intact primary forest area has dropped to just 15 percent of the total area of the province.
“Before East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan were split, the forest area that was still functioning well was around 35 percent of the total area [of the province],” said Dr. Petrus Gunarso, country program director for Tropenbos International in Indonesia.
“After the split, the well-functioning forest area in East Kalimantan that remains covers only 15 percent of the total area. Conversely, in North Kalimantan, the functioning forest area will be around 69 percent of the total area [of the province].”
Petrus also explained that while 75 percent of East Kalimantan has been classified as “forest area,” much of this is no longer actual forest. Unsustainable forest management and land clearing for mining, palm oil plantations and infrastructure have been the main causes of deforestation in the province, he said.

No, that isn’t really the case. What is true is that some (but not all) socially conservative American Christians enjoy persecution fantasies. That’s common theme with a number of other groups in the world, sometimes even including paranoia about American influence in Canada (though again, most Canadians don’t fall prey to it).

Syrian rebels say capture nuclear reactor site bombed by Israel
Syria, which razed the site after the raid, said the complex was a regular military facility but refused to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency unrestricted access to the site.
Omar Abu Laila, a spokesman for the Eastern Joint Command of the Free Syrian Army, said the only building rebels found at the site was a hanger containing at least one Scud missile.
“It appears that the site was turned into a Scud launch base. Whatever structures it had have been buried,” he said.
Let’s hope there are no goodies still buried there.

The Syrian military, which razed the site after the Israeli raid, said the complex was a regular military facility but refused to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency unrestrained access, after the agency said the complex could have been a nuclear site.

Woodward has decades of experience in reporting and analyzing the presidency. The White House replied because than experience causes people in DC to take Woodward seriously. But to call him “willfully wrong” is to call him a liar, and that’s high risk strategy that could easily backfire on the president.
Disagree about the high risk and backfire.
The risk is that large numbers will be dismayed by the uncivility and condemn the president, calling HIM the liar. As opposed to the large number who will condemn him and call him a liar because he’s black/democratic. The difference in size of the respective “large numbers” is very small.
On the other hand he establishes a bright line support of his already existing position and denies this new back-avenue attack.
And finally, while you and I and just about everyone else knows “willfully wrong” means he was lying it’s still not as blunt and offensive as using the word “liar.” It can be parsed, some face can be saved.
Add to this the fact that for several years now - since prior to Bush’s presidency - Woodward’s “journalism” seems to rely heavily on the Rather standards of professionalism.

Report: U.S. made secret N. Korea trips
WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 (UPI) — The Obama administration secretly sent envoys to North Korea to meet with the new leadership of the secretive state, U.S, officials told the Los Angeles Times.
The two undisclosed trips by administration officials last year were aimed at seeing if a new level of cooperation could be forged with Kim Jong Un after he assumed power in late 2011.
Ranking officials refused to comment on the trips, although Korea experts in the United States said they were worth the effort despite the apparent lack of success.
“I don’t know why at this point the administration just doesn’t set the record straight on this,” said a former U.S. official. “All it shows is that we were trying to walk the last mile with North Korea.”
I am not suprised we tried that. We had to. It was a valiant effort but as expected nothing has come from it other than more missile tests and nuclear explosions.

The GOP isn’t going to be able to avoid blame for the sequester. Sorry, but no. The sequester is right now the only way Republicans can cut the budget. And Barron’s is right on that point: If we don’t reduce spending we’ll be as screwed as Greece is. This makes absolutely no sense, Dark. I don’t think you have an actual economic rationale to back this up. Our problems are not in the least bit similar to Greece’s in any way, shape, or form, and making that analogy is completely absurd and makes it seem like you’re not treating the conversation in the least bit seriously, but just shouting talking points. I’m really not interested in that.

re: #361 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut
In his State of the Union speech last Tuesday, President Obama concluded that “the State of our Union is stronger.” The big question is: stronger than what?
Federal debt is a record $12.2 trillion, or 76% of the nation’s annual output of goods and services. While that’s still well below Greece’s 153%, we’re headed steadily in the wrong direction.
According to estimates by the Congressional Budget Office, adjusted by Barron’s to account for recent tax increases and other factors, if the U.S. doesn’t raise taxes further and cut spending dramatically, the national debt could easily reach 153% of economic output by 2035.
These are not just numbers. If the U.S. national debt continues ballooning, we can be sure of a deep, long-lasting recession — very likely a depression — sometime in the next two to three decades. The unemployment rate could easily surge to 20%.

Karzai orders US special forces out of Afghan province
The Afghan president has ordered US special forces to leave Wardak province within two weeks.
The decision was being taken due to allegations of disappearances and torture by Afghans considered to be part of US special forces, said a spokesman for Hamid Karzai.
….
“After a thorough discussion, it became clear that armed individuals named as US special force[s] stationed in Wardak province engage in harassing, annoying, torturing and even murdering innocent people,” it said.“A recent example in the province is an incident in which nine people were disappeared in an operation by this suspicious force and in a separate incident a student was taken away at night from his home, whose tortured body with throat cut was found two days later under a bridge.
“However, Americans reject having conducted any such operation and any involvement of their special force.
looks like allegations of both rendition and “enhanced interrogation”.

Except that the real cuts that must be made - 25 ~ 40% of the defense budget - still aren’t being made. We need to drastically cut defense spending, increase taxes back to (at minimum) the levels they were at in 1980, as well as remove all income limits from SS withholding. Do those things and the budget problems disappear. Then we can afford to begin fixing the looming climate and infrastructure disasters ahead of us.

Actually, we don’t need to make any of the cuts. Sufficient increases in taxes will take care of the issue. 1980, for example, would just about do it.
Other suggestions include quit idolizing privatization. When you do a study to see who spends the least per dollar recovering overdue taxes you should not throw out the top two because they’re government. (IRS study prior to issuing a contract for private company to recover overdue taxes. The IRS department doing it was top. Another IRS department was second best.) Require honest evaluations when you do private companies, to include the either making them account for the paperwork costs OR removing the paperwork from the government offices they’re looking at replacing.
We’re so infected with Randian Righteousness that we don’t even see half of the problems it causes.

It is where poor teaching fails us all. Statistics are very important to our society, and manipulators of opinion are very good at taking advantage of our ignorance of such matters.
The odds of a coin landing heads up 9 times out of 10 in total are very low, but the odds of a single coin toss landing heads up are 50:50, regardless of the outcome of the previous 9 or 9,000 tosses.
And this sort of basic statistics is something we also need to teach our teenagers as part of sex education: if a paarticular method is “99.9% effective”, it doesn’t mean you have to do it 1,000 times before it fails, it can just as likely fail the fist, fiftieth or five-hundreth time…

That there are people disappearing, some showing up dead? Nope, there’s plenty of historical record.
That our special forces are the ones doing it? After all, al Qaeda does it (as do several other criminal and terrorist organizations). The problem is that we do make people disappear. We have done raids and the people get moved to prisons in other nations, eventually (sometimes) winding up in Gitmo.
The jarring note is the person showing up a couple days later with a cut throat. That’s not typical of our behavior - but we do have bad apples who would do that and worse, so it can’t be dismissed on its face.

Raiders defensive tackle Desmond Bryant was arrested early this morning in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
The Miami-Dade Corrections website says Bryant was arrested early this morning for criminal mischief. No further information about what led to the arrest has been provided, and a call from PFT to the Miami-Dade Corrections department was not answered.
A rumor, apparently starting with Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on Twitter, began circulating this morning about Dez Bryant of the Cowboys having been arrested, but that is not the case. Dallas’s Dez Bryant simply got mixed up with another NFL player who has a similar name. Dez Bryant took to Twitter and noted the “false rumors,” adding that he had been working out in Dallas this morning, not getting arrested in Miami.

Nazi Imagery Posted By Candidate’s Father Rocks Westchester Exec Race
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The race for Westchester County executive have gotten ugly, with Tea Party conservative challenger Kurt Colucci now taking heat from incumbent Rob Astorino’s campaign over Nazi images posted to the Web by Colucci’s father.
Colucci, a self-identified “conservative libertarian,” has said the Tea Party has been taken over by the Republican Party, according to a Journal News report. He pointed out that the supported Astorino, a Republican, in his initial run for Westchester County executive four years ago, but has been disappointed in his performance, the newspaper reported.
…Meanwhile, Astorino’s campaign has drawn attention to images that Colucci’s father posted – one of which shows Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s head on a uniformed Nazi’s body with a caption reading, “our gov homo,” the newspaper reported.
Another image allegedly posted by Colucci’s father showed a Nazi meeting, with a caption calling it a meeting an Albany in which “dictator cuomo and field marshal bloomberg” were in charge, the newspaper reported.
Colucci distanced himself from the report, telling the newspaper he does not have a relationship with his father and that his father left when he was about 3 years old.

There are two stories there. First, Colucci’s father is a reactionary moron who Godwins his way through life. Second, Colucci himself is an idiot, since he thinks the Tea Party is somehow separate from the GOP and that the Republicans have “taken over” the TP.
First. I haven’t spoke to my father in many years. If he went total bonkers that would not reflect a thing about me.
Second. He’s a libertarian. See Ron Paul.

I didn’t say it reflected on Colucci at all. I said that his father is a reactionary moron who Godwins his way through life. The man and his father are two separate people.

Luap Nor isn’t a libertarian. He’s a Neo-Confederate theocrat who uses libertarian buzzwords to dupe the college kids and IT nerds that buy into libertarianism into thinking that he’s on their side.

Not just the election, but the full-on wave of unbridled Obamahate that bubbled up as soon as Ohio was called for the Democrats.

Huh, I was thinking about this too. I think, most of the anger about the current situation is primarily reactive. What Ted Cruz and Scott Walker are doing is worth being angry about…
I’m trying to be a little more polite though.

And even beyond the presidential race, you had the open misogyny of people like Todd Akin to contend with.

Karl Rove’s meltdown on TV was amazing. So were all the Twitter meltdowns by the wingnuts.

Self-reply, sorry.
I am fascinated by Thylacines, and truly and dearly hope that a small population still exists today.

That replaced the Bush hate for 8 years, which had replaced the Clinton hate, which had replaced the Reagan hate…. It’s a never ending cycle. In 4 years there will be a new group of haters to laugh at.

Yeah, you can be angry without being needlessly insulting. Though in a way, a lot of modern GOP ideas are just… dismissable. It’s hard not to insult disbelief in climate change, because it represents such deliberate ignorance. But there’s definitely a lot of just shouting for shouting’s sake that doesn’t actually achieve anything. Noise isn’t progress. Get out the vote, voter registration, voter education is progress. It can be good to make a big ruckus, like people did in attacking Rush over his comments to Fluke— because it draws attention to the issue, but actual political change doesn’t come through just being angry, it comes from doing something constructive with the anger.

There very little comparison, either in volume and intensity, to the frothing-at-the-mouth hate we saw for Obama.

I think anger over voter suppression efforts in this past election was a necessary and effective reaction.

It is kind of sad to see the New York GOP wither between the tea party and the “libertarian conservative” crowd. It was once the party of Roosevelt and Rockefeller, and until recently, provided some votes (who were duly primaried out) for gay equality.
I don’t know what the Conservative Party is up to nowadays, but they helped start this crazy train running by undercutting the moderate Republican candidate in the previously safe NY-23 seat.

It’s much easier to see it with twitter & FB. The GWB hate was pretty extreme from what I can remember. I can just imagine what we would have seen if Twitter was available.

I don’t ever remember anyone calling for armed insurrection against Bush. Or Clinton. That alone makes the Obama hate more deranged.

I clicked over to Current TV just to see what they’re up to these days. Top of the most popular articles list: 10 Similarities Between Conservative Republicans and Nazis
Seriously. I think the Al Jazeera takeover will be an improvement.
It’s stupid as fuck, but that’s also a “community” page, i.e., something like one of our pages here. So it’s not really something that Current TV has specifically published themselves, but just something one of their site’s users has reposted from another blog.
