WaPo Ombudsman Calls for the Post to Better Understand Right Wing Homophobia

“We have chosen hell”
Media • Views: 27,917

Washington Post ombudsman Patrick Pexton struggles with the issue: Is the Post ‘Pro-Gay’?

Apparently, the Post has been getting emails from conservatives complaining that their anti-gay viewpoints are being marginalized. They’re not happy about it. Hating gay people is a core conservative value, and why doesn’t the Post understand that?

Pexton concludes that they have a point, and the Post needs to try harder to understand.

Still, just as I have written that The Post should do a better job of covering and understanding the anti-abortion movement, The Post should do a better job of understanding and conveying to readers, with detachment and objectivity, the beliefs and the fears of social conservatives.

I’m actually in favor of this, because if more people see what the gay-hating reactionary “social conservatives” really believe and fear, it will only serve to hasten their rejection by the rest of society.

For example, here’s Matt Barber, the quintessential social conservative, in the far right conspiracy journal World Net Daily with An Open Letter to ‘Gay’ Teens, helpfully explaining that they’re not gay, they’re sinners. And they’re doomed to burn in hell forever unless they repent.

I’ve had many people ask me what I’d say to my children if one of them came to me and declared: “Dad, I’m gay.”

Here’s what I’d say. I’d tell them exactly what I’m about to tell you.

I love you. I neither judge you nor condemn you. I accept you and I would die for you.

But you are not “gay.”

Yes, you may be physically attracted to people of the same sex, but how you act on those attractions is entirely your choice. Who you are - your identity - is not defined by your sexual feelings, temptations or behaviors. The difference between who you are and what you feel or do is as the difference between night and day.

But you are flawed - you are a sinner. …

Homosexual behavior is always wrong - demonstrably and absolutely wrong.

Period. …

In fact, homosexual sin is expressly identified in both the Old and New Testaments as being among the list of sins that, if committed without repentance, will prevent you from “inheriting the kingdom of God.”

That is to say, yes; unrepentant homosexual behavior is disobedience to God. If we rebel against God and refuse to repent and ask His forgiveness, then we have chosen our own fate - we have chosen to disqualify ourselves from heaven.

We have chosen hell.

That’s what Matt Barber would say to his own son.

Yes, by all means, let’s really try hard to “understand” what’s going on in this religious fanatic’s head.

Matt Barber is a disgusting excuse for a human being.

The problem isn’t that normal people don’t understand the homophobes position. We understand it and its fucking repellant.

re: #3 Kragar (Antichrist )

There is a certain brand of earnest homophobe who is sure gay men are just miserable. They actually exist. Of course, they have to force themselves to avoid noticing all the happy and successful gay men, but by only focusing on the sad cases, they can stay inside their little bubble.

6 Kragar (Antichrist )  Mon, Feb 25, 2013 1:38:43pm

Why would a homosexual possibly be depressed? Because he has family members telling him he’s broken, possessed by demons, a horrible shame to the family and that God hates him et cetera? Or because he’s a dirty sinner who just needs to be “healed”?

That makes perfect sense.

I will never, ever understand how people get tripped up by another person’s sexuality. It’s a speed bump less than an inch high on the road of life, like a person’s race or gender.

These people are deranged.

Also, stolen gleefully from George Takei’s FB page:

Why can’t these shits just leave people alone. Women, gays, minorities…just leave these people be.

The Post actually had a regular column set up for deep diving into the Right, with Dave Weigel doing the reporting, but then of course the Right had him removed over their “Journo-list” fake scandal, and WaPo swapped a reporter for a propagandist.

When I hear about someone being “born again”, I’m disappointed with them for falling into that sick microscopic cultist mind set.

Doesn’t the Post already have Jen Rubin, George effin Will, Charles Krauthammer, and Marc torture-apologist Thiessan writing for them? That would seem more ‘understanding’ then necessary.

It never made any sense to me either, and my parents are way homophobic. But I grew up in San Francisco and I knew some gay men— like one librarian, and my grandmother’s hairdresser. And they were just normal adults, and they were both very nice.

That’s what’s winning this, as much as any sort of political and legal strategy. Gay people are living openly and they’re nothing scary, they’re just people, their sexuality doesn’t matter, so kids today are growing up just not giving a shit.

It’s a lovely thing.

There aren’t actually that many gay people as a percentage of the population and they tend to live highly concentrated in the Castro.

Now, I’m happy to say, there’s a big mansion flying the rainbow flag on the same block as my parents.

My parents aren’t hater homophobes. They’re just “That’s unnatural” homophobes who have a screwed up religious idea about sex anyway. They’re very conflicted on gay marriage, for example, they like the commitment of it but they’re all freaked out about the word and stuff.

But it’s very low down on their list of priorities, way down below poverty and education and all that jazz.

I can sort of relate. Had one parental unit teach me not to be bigoted while growing up. After I turned 18, turns out it was one of the worst cases of “Do as I say, not do as I do” I’ve ever experienced.

The corkers were telling me he didn’t like two of my friends, partly because they’re Jewish, and later saying my friend with a PhD in physics was lazy because he spent too much time in school. Said friend was married and starting a family at the time.

Don’t even get him started on black people/African Americans.

It’s a sort of lazy, ingrained judgmental bigotry. He’d never act on it, but it’s disturbing to know the thought process is there.

One of the worst moments of your life is finding out your parents are actual people, with all of the foible/faults that that entails.

Federal Election Commission Republicans Block Enforcement Against GOP Donor

The Federal Election Commission deadlocked along party lines on whether to hold accountable a Republican contractor who blatantly circumvented campaign finance limits. While the three Democratic commissioners agreed that William A. “Aaron” Bennett had willfully violated federal election law by offering to reimburse friends if they donated to Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), the three FEC Republicans blocked the determination and allowed Bennett to escape with a mere $4,000 fine and a warning.

It’s Time to See Joe McCarthy For the Hero He Was

Freshman Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is just the latest in a long series of public figures to be reviled for “McCarthyism” following his recent questioning of Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s nominee for secretary of defense. The response? Conservatives have rushed to defend their own against the charge. To understate the case, that’s not enough. It’s time to debunk McCarthyism itself.

No matter how much evidence vindicating the late Sen. Joe McCarthy comes out, what we call McCarthyism remains anathema in American life. Simply to utter the word is to deep-freeze debate, even thought itself. Even as we learn about the history-changing extent to which American traitors working for the Kremlin penetrated and subverted the U.S. government (including many individuals investigated by McCarthy), the unsupportable fact remains that nothing in American public life is worse than to be compared to the man best known for his uncompromising fight against the secret, massive assault on our nation. When will we realize it’s time to make amends and honor his memory?

Apparently this is not an attempt at satire.

(CNN) — Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop died peacefully at his home on Monday, Dartmouth College said. He was 96.

Koop served as surgeon general from 1982 to 1989, under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

He was outspoken on public health issues and did much to raise the profile the office of the surgeon general.

He died at his home in Hanover, New Hampshire, the college said in a news release.

The current minimum wage is more like a nice allowance.

77 Gus  Mon, Feb 25, 2013 4:20:31pm

Even raising it to $9/hr wouldn’t be enough. Oh well. Guess we need that money in society to pay for super stars and CEOs.

I’m already teaching my kids that I’m taking care of them now so they can take care of me when they get a place.

For me, wife, and 2 kids its $20.11. After taxes are taken out we would be living in a van down by the river.

I’m barely making a living wage for San Diego.

83 kirkspencer  Mon, Feb 25, 2013 4:35:54pm

The minimum wage arguments always anger me. I always like to start by asking the people how much they think they would need to barely survive. When they start talking about food stamps and such I remind them that we’re talking of trying to make people work so they don’t need those, so let’s not include them.

Simple number, what is the absolute minimum you’d need to get by.

$7.50 an hour is ~$15,000 per year. Was your number that low? No? Then your choice is push for a higher minimum wage or push to expand food stamps and other care OR… to deal with a lot of hungry, angry people. Sooner or later that’s the choice.

I get $450 a week right now in unemployment benefits. Start my new job next Monday, thank goodness. $450 a week is barely enough for gas, a few utilities, dog food, and bourbon…fortunately my wife makes a good salary too, so she was able to cover our mortgage and other expenses the last two months and our savings burn rate was only about 2k a month.

The good thing about being unemployed for three months was we learned how to budget again - so we will start saving a bit more than we were and still be able to enjoy ourselves.

I know what you mean. I was unemployed for 4 months 4 years ago and collected unemployment for the first time in my life. I hated every minute of it. I must have averaged 10 applications a day until I found my current job.

Yes, not only is WWE going to push Donald Trump to the front of TV again tonight, but they’re not done with Glenn Beck yet:

WWE NEWS: WWE pushing forward with Glenn Beck angle tonight

WWE is pushing forward with its attempt to get conservative commentator Glenn Beck to appear on Monday’s Raw. After Beck declined to appear, tweeting Friday that he is “booked for anything else,” WWE issued the following press release two hours before the start of Raw that they will attempt to bring Raw to Beck.

*** MEDIA ADVISORY ***

GLENN BECK SAYS NO TO RAW, WWE GOES TO BECK

Glenn Beck has declined WWE’s invitation to address our fans live tonight on Raw, in response to a segment that aired on TheBlaze last week where Beck referenced WWE as “stupid wrestling people.”

Instead, WWE is sending a video crew to Beck’s studios to get comment from the talk show host and political commentator.

Tune-in to Monday Night Raw tonight at 8/7C on USA Network to see if Beck responds.

They’re going all in with this Zeb character skit. Trying to have Donald Trump (who was worked prominently before with McMahon) and Glenn Beck on the same show on one night = wingnut overload.

Mike Huckabee: Abortion an ‘incredible Holocaust of our own’

During his keynote speech at the Republican Party of Iowa’s Celebrate Life event on Saturday, Fox News host Mike Huckabee compared abortion in the United States to the systematic elimination of the Jewish population by the Nazis.

Huckabee recalled that Oskar Schindler, a Nazi businessman, saved roughly 1,200 Jews from the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. The former Arkansas governor said the country could use a few more people like Schindler who were willing to “intervene on behalf of human life.”

“And now we are called into this incredible Holocaust of our own in America,” Huckabee continued. “Fifty-five million babies. Fifty-five million babies since 1973 have died in what ought to be the safest place in the world, their mother’s womb. It has become one of the most dangerous places for a baby to be. For us, this is not about the politics of Democrat or Republican, winning or losing — it is about our capacity to one day stand before a holy God and give an account for whether we stood between life and death for those who had no voice but ours.”

Since its such a big deal, maybe you and your ilk should stop blocking every attempt for women to get birth control, you fucking bastard.

Thanks…I’m pretty excited about it…company has a ‘social good’ aspect to it. Will share details in time, but suffice it to say I’m moving to a fairly stable area in the IT world so the long term prospects are good…much better than the social marketing company I was with before…that was a stupid move on my part in retrospect.

I gave up for a while. I’ll be five years unemployed come July. It’s an odd congruence of factors in my case. The largest is a HUGE glut of people in my professions.

The thing that really annoys me the most about it is that I was offered two jobs within the first six months. The first was for half what I’d been earning and lower than any other employee at the site. So I counteroffered, asking for some additional benefits in lieu of salary. They said goodbye. The second same thing, I said I’d take it, they decided I wasn’t aggressive enough because I didn’t counter-offer.

It is more than a little frustrating when the lesson you learn from (a) gets you removed from the list for (b).

That sucks. Sometimes I wonder if the people making the hiring decisions are qualified for their jobs.

I sometimes wonder as well.

As I said there are a lot of factors in play in my situation, things that caught me in the cracks. Looking back some of them are my fault, others wouldn’t have been if it hadn’t been for things that weren’t my fault - I just caught this sequence… The major factors hindering me are:
a) My field has a glut of qualified applicants (librarian)
b) I lack certs and my experience is … atypical for my secondary field (I was the Computer Guy for a four county library. Servers, workstations, and laptops, admin and helpdesk, windows, mac, and linux, wiring, repair, training… Seven years of it, but I didn’t learn some of the buzzwords the interviewers expected. I just did the work.)
c) I’m (relatively) old. It’s obvious from my resume.
d) I keep running into the “you don’t have experience in OUR field” problem.

Sorry. Venting. I’ve started looking again - did so starting about a year ago when the economy allegedly started recovering - and am re-discovering this joy.

Oh, but that wouldn’t fulfill the purpose of every healthy woman being a walking incubator for (the only ones who are worth having, after all!) more boys! They won’t be satisfied until every sexual encounter is a potential conception again!

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if one of ‘em isn’t trying to undo menopause to make that a completely true statement, either…

Oops, this Patrick Pexton guy accidentally released the wrong version of the article.

Fixed: Is the Post “Pro-Negro”?

Excerpt:

I get a steady stream of e-mails and phone calls from readers who assert that The Post has a “pro-Negro agenda” and publishes too many “puffy” stories about interracial marriage, and that it even allows too many interracial couples to appear in the Date Lab feature in Sunday’s WP Magazine.

“The white supremacist side gets short shrift,” as one reader recently put it, and The Post “caters slavishly to Martin Luther King Boulevard.”
