Desperately Thrashing Breitbrats Misrepresent Boston Herald Anti-Hagel Op-Ed

They’re at it again
Wingnuts • Views: 31,156

Today at right wing propaganda outlet breitbart.com, there are no less than 14 front-page articles (there may be more by the time you read this) attacking Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel in every possible way; I haven’t seen the Breitbrats this worked up since last November.

And they’re also up to the same old tricks again, misrepresenting an opinion piece in the Boston Herald as an official editorial: BOSTON HERALD TO OBAMA: WITHDRAW HAGEL. (h/t: Mark.)

Breitbart “News” says:

Monday night, the Boston Herald ran an editorial calling for President Obama to pull Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel…

But here’s the page at the Boston Herald: Prez Should Pull Hagel’s Nomination. It’s clearly labeled as an Op-Ed in their Opinion category, and it’s by Peter Brookes, who is not a Boston Herald editor but … wait for it … a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

Is this just the usual no-standards Breitbart sloppiness, or are they deliberately misrepresenting the op-ed? It really doesn’t matter, because for all their thrashing and lying and smearing, Chuck Hagel is going to be confirmed as the next Secretary of Defense: Chuck Hagel Clears Senate Hurdle Toward Confirmation.

The Senate voted 71-27 on Tuesday to end debate on Chuck Hagel’s nomination to become secretary of Defense, ending a Republican campaign that forced Democrats to fight for every step toward confirmation, which is expected later in the day.

I think the Breitbrats may actually have helped Hagel get the SecDef job. Between them and the McCarthy-like ranting of Ted Cruz, the right really made themselves look like deranged buffoons… and all over someone who is basically a mainstream Republican. (Or what used to be mainstream, anyway.)

IMPEACH HAGEL!

2 lawhawk  Tue, Feb 26, 2013 12:16:05pm

Sloppy on their part. It’s an editorial, just not by the paper itself, but by someone who submitted it who happens to be from Heritage.

Not that any of the bleating actually mattered. Hagel’s getting confirmed today, and it will probably be by a similar margin as the 71-27 cloture vote. Figure that McCain and Sessions flip their votes to no, but otherwise it goes through.

A few GOPers might attempt to triangulate on their votes this afternoon in looking for any kind of advantage, but at the end of the day, Hagel gets confirmed.

Next up? Brennan at CIA.

Breitbart.com tis but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets its hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

4 Targetpractice  Tue, Feb 26, 2013 12:16:43pm

Man, nothing has gone right for them since that first Romney debate. They were absolutely sure that they were on course to completely reverse every bad thing that had happened to them since ‘08. But then Obama wins reelection, gets the GOP to blink on the fiscal cliff, and now has actually made them burn what little political capital they have in a vain attempt to stop Hagel’s nomination while leaving them fighting amongst themselves as to whether the sequester is the “WORST THING EVER” or a bump in the road that nobody will notice.

Where’s the popcorn?

re: #2 lawhawk

Actually, an op-ed is not an editorial:

An op-ed, abbreviated from opposite the editorial page[1] (though often mistaken for opinion-editorial), is a newspaper article that expresses the opinions of a named writer who is usually unaffiliated with the newspaper’s editorial board. These are different from editorials (which are usually unsigned and written by editorial board members) and letters to the editor (which are submitted by readers of the journal or newspaper).

Vic Eliason Wonders if Chuck Hagel Is a Secret Muslim

Yesterday, Vic Eliason of Voice of Christian Youth America interviewed Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly about Chuck Hagel, who is set to be confirmed as secretary of defense later today. Adding to the other ridiculous, last-ditch efforts to sink Hagel’s nomination, Eliason asked Schlafly about wild allegations “that Mr. Hagel has become or has been a part of Islam, he’s Islamic.” Rather than specifically address Eliason’s question, Schlafly said that since Obama “gives a pass to Islam” in “his attack on religion,” Americans “have to be on guard on that all the time.”

At the same time, without the Breitbartians, the GOP would have really had no leg to stand on for any length of time in their opposition. The “Friends of Hamas” BS actually gave them political cover to drag things out for weeks, with “questions” that they just wanted “answers” to. The GOP cranked the loony to 11 by allowing Ted “Tailgunner Joe” Cruz to act like an absolute moron at the committee vote.

Lawmaker Receives Death Threat Over Gun Bill: ‘There Will Be Blood! I’m Coming For You, N—– B—–’

According to police, a man named Franklin Sain sent six emails, one voicemail and one written letter to Fields that were riddled with obscenities, racial slurs, sexist language and violent threats:

“I guarantee there is not enough law enforcement or military to stop an all-out overthrow of this government if you or that n—– president tries to take our guns,” one e-mail dated Feb. 13 reads. “Guarantee we will make World War I and II look like child’s play, many will die. Be prepared.”

Another e-mail expresses hope that someone would “Giffords” both Fields and Rep. Beth McCann, a reference to the 2011 mass shooting that nearly killed Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords.

The paper letter attributed to Sain states, “There will be blood! I’m coming for you, n—– b—–.” … “Limiting magazine sizes is stupid and will not work,” he wrote on Feb. 13. “I for one have 100+ 30 round mags and 150 round drums. I will never give those up and I am far from being some whack job.”

In an email to Fields the following day, Sain wrote: “I ordered a ton of new 30 round magazines today C***bag…go f*** yourself and your new law…we won’t abide by it…C*** N*****.”

It’s nice to see the Egyptians agree on something for a change

Egypt-Gaza tunnels must be destroyed: Cairo court

Egypt’s ruling Muslim Brotherhood has close ties with the Hamas Islamists that run Gaza, but many Egyptians fear the enclave is a security risk for Egypt. Leftist lawyers said they brought the case with activists to force the government’s hand.

President Mohamed Mursi’s national security adviser Essam Haddad has said Egypt will not tolerate the two-way flow of smuggled arms through the tunnels that is destabilizing its Sinai peninsula.

“I filed the case because I was worried about the state of national security in my country after the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power and its unclear policies and links with Hamas,” said Wael Hamdy, a lawyer who brought the case.

He said the case had been brought after 16 Egyptian border guards were killed last August by militants near the Gaza border that highlighted lawlessness in the Sinai desert region adjoining Israel and Gaza.

Charlie Wilson? McNamara? Rumsfeld?

Wilson actually had a real conflict of interest with ownership of GM and the various contracts that the company had with the govt. It was a real scandal, as opposed to the contrived mess the right wing attempted with Hagel. Controversial from the outset.

McNamara became controversial due to his actions as Sec. Def.

Ditto for Rumsfeld.

Egypt-Gaza tunnels must be destroyed: Cairo court

Did you see this story the other day?

To Block Gaza Tunnels, Egypt Lets Sewage Flow

GAZA —The Egyptian military is resorting to a pungent new tactic to shut down the smuggling tunnels connecting Sinai and Gaza: flooding them with sewage. Along with the stink, the approach is raising new questions about relations between Egypt’s new Islamist leaders and their ideological allies in Hamas who control the Gaza Strip.
“Awful,” said Abu Mutair Shalouf, 35, a Palestinian smuggler on the Gaza side, watching workers haul buckets of sewage-soaked soil from the shaft of a tunnel flooded by the Egyptian military 15 days ago. “I don’t know why they did this.”

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.

The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake picked up our story, and reports the GOP is calling on several top Democratic leaders to denounce Progress Kentucky.

From WaPo:

Republicans are calling for top Democrats (lots of them) to repudiate the super PAC: “This is disgusting and must be condemned immediately by top Democrats across the board, including Jim Messina, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, DSCC Chairman Bennet, and DCCC Chairman Steve Israel – not to mention Senator Schumer and Senator Reid,” said a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Brad Dayspring.

UPDATE 3:45 p.m.

The leader of Progress Kentucky is pushing back against national criticism that their Tweets are racially insensitive, and accuse the McConnell campaign of distracting from the senator’s record.

“Progress Kentucky strongly denies that the organization has engaged in any such thing,” said Shawn Reilly, executive director of the super PAC. “Benton’s statements are an attempt to divert attention from the fact that Mitch McConnell has engaged in the selling of the American middle class overseas for decades.”

Reilly goes on to say that McConnell has pushed for policies that are favorable to China and continues to highlight the relationship with James Chao.

“When the Premier of China publicly thanks an industrialist for his role in developing Chinese industry, then that industrial and his family contribute $80,000 to the Kentucky Republican Party, it is fair to question whether McConnell is selling out the middle-class,” says Reilly.

Earlier today, however, a Progress spokesman told WFPL they were planning to issue an apology to Chao.

At least 75 prominent Republicans, including two sitting members of Congress, will file a brief with the Supreme Court this week defending the idea that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. The amicus brief will be filed on behalf of those looking to strike down Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in the state. The case and the Defense of Marriage Act will both be argued before the Supreme Court next month. According to The New York Times, which got a copy of the brief, it even cites some cherished pro-conservative decisions (like the Citizens United case) as precedent to strike down any bans.

Are they prepping for 2016?

Facebook called Sen. Blumenthal’s office within hours of the letter being sent to ensure him that the company had a dedicated team to deal with Sandy Hook-related requests. In a statement, the company said, “For the past few months, our rapid response team has acted swiftly to remove inappropriate materials flagged by the foundation and the families.” Indeed, it’s been nearly two months since we found out about the first Sandy Hook scammer, a New York woman who posed as the aunt of one of the first grade victims of the shootings and solicited money for a “funeral fund.” One would’ve thought that the social network would have cranked up the security dials after that scandal, but apparently it wasn’t enough. If the trouble at Facebook continues, at least we’ll know it wasn’t for lack of trying.

Klayman maintains that AIPAC president Lee Rosenberg is “in bed with the Mullah-in-Chief” and claims “this ultra-leftist Jewish mafia type and his Chicago Jewish bottom-feeding allies have sold out their own people for political influence.”

Completely off-topic:
I am about 95% finished with my relocation project. It has been a learning experience. Here are a few of the things I have learned:

1) I am much more of a filthy, disgusting slob than I ever suspected, and that’s saying something. Picking up and quite literally exposing every object you own to the light of day can reveal to you certain truths about yourself that you’d probably rather not know. It’s not a surprise to find dog hairs in unlikely places, but it certainly is a surprise to find a small slice of what appears to be pepperoni adhered to the BACK of a bookshelf that hadn’t moved away from the wall in over 5 years. I mean, seriously. What the ACTUAL fuck.

2) I have wayyy too “Bob”-damned much STUFF. I sold, gave away, donated, and threw away a huge amount of STUFF, and yet I still have too much STUFF. It’s not like I’m a pathological hoarder, but after the 948th trip up the stairs, my preference for “real” books, DVDs, and CDs over digital equivalents is breeding a certain contempt.

3) The primary feature of the place I left was ‘astonishingly incompetent management’. The turnover was amazing, and the most recent crew told me that their record keeping was so FUBAR that they didn’t have complete information on which units were supposed to be occupied and which weren’t. I don’t know what’s worse: the fact that they can’t find their lease paperwork, or the fact that they told me about it.

The primary feature of the new place seems to be that I have moved in adjacent to That Person Downstairs. The third day I was here, she stormed over and read me the riot act about how my kids were making too much noise and knocking over her potted plants. I apologized and told her it wouldn’t be a problem any longer. It might be worth noting that I don’t have any kids.

Florida welfare drug testing program struck down by federal appeals court

Republican-led efforts to drug test all recipients of public assistance were dealt a possible death blow Tuesday by a federal appeals court when the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Florida’s controversial 2011 law requiring all welfare recipients and applicants to undergo drug testing. According to the Colorlines blog, the court’s decision also undermines a nearly identical law proposed by Georgia’s Gov. Nathan Deal (R).

The 11th Circuit Court voted unanimously to uphold the 2011 decision by an Orlando, FL court that the tests violate the Fourth Amendment’s protections against unreasonable search and seizures.

Republicans across the country have sponsored these types of bills in state legislatures, purportedly to protect children from being raised by drug-addicted parents and to stem the tide of drug use among the poor and unemployed. Aside from the testing being unconstitutional, however, that rising tide of poor and unemployed people using drugs has turned out not to exist.

Swiss anti-choice activists seek to ban abortions for ‘economic’ reasons

Swiss pro-lifers launched an initiative Tuesday to ban abortions in the country for economic reasons, saying the practice costs hundreds of billions in lost tax revenues.

The “Protect life to remedy the loss of billions” initiative was launched by an independent group which needs to gather more than 100,000 signatures by August 2014 for the issue to be put to a referendum.

It charges that Switzerland’s about 11,000 abortions each year deprive the country’s economy of hundreds of billions in lost income taxes and consumption.

“Each unconceived and unborn child will never be able to contribute a single franc to our national income, will never become a consumer, will never be able to contribute to our social institutions,” it says on its website.

I think the Breitbrats may actually have helped Hagel get the SecDef job. Between them and the McCarthy-like ranting of Ted Cruz, the right really made themselves look like deranged buffoons… and all over someone who is basically a mainstream Republican.

This is another one of Obama’s nefarious traps that he has set for the out-of-control GOP to veer into: they have made themselves look like idiots to everyone but the (minority of) voters who support them.

Michelle’s appearance at the Oscars was another nefarious Obamatrap: they knew that the right wing would freak out at the top of its lungs so they could be confronted with images of Reagan and Laura Bush both appearing.

How can they be so low-handed? This is not worthy of the Office of the Presidency…

Jindal to Obama: ‘Stop Scaring’ Americans

Gov. Bobby Jindal barely had time to finish dessert in the State Dining Room before he came to cameras on the North Drive of the White House to accuse his lunch host of fear-mongering about impending spending cuts.

“He’s trying to scare the American people. He’s trying to distort the impact,” Jindal said. “The president needs to stop campaigning. Stop trying to scare the American people.”

The Louisiana Republican delivered his criticism of President Obama just steps away from the Oval Office following a lunch hosted by the president for governors of all 50 states. He used the opportunity to talk about the looming across-the-board spending cuts scheduled to go into effect on Friday.

“To me that’s a lack of leadership - for him to send out his cabinet secretaries to warn about all kinds of devastating consequences when we’re talking about a federal budget that will still be larger than last year’s budget,” Jindal said.

Mitch knows it was not worth it, but Mitch also knows he is no longer in a position to stop them from derailing government to make their point.

…and now comes the flood of emails about “Democrats are the real racists” from the people that routinely, unironically send me the absolute ugliest, derpiest, conspiracy crap they can find that’s Birther, anti-Muslim, and yes, anti-Chinese. People who think Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are funny because they’re “un-PC and honest.”

Seems like a lot to me! They say it’s the second most played song of the 20th century. I’d hate to think what a feature film studio would have to pay for that almost 50 year old performance.

The early TV performance by Astrud Gilberto is a classic. The Astrud Gilberto TV performance is amazing. She sang so well but seemed a bit terrified. Heh in 1964 nobody was blase about appearing on TV.

In any case it looks like I’m going to have a friend sing it and hire a guitar player and get some time a local studio. Unless I can find a better alternative. What’s a little frustrating is I’m using it as far background “elevator” music in a retail store scene. So I’ll have this nice studio performance and then have to tweak it to sound like it’s on an old tinny am radio. Making a short film is like making a jigsaw puzzle in a high wind. Having all the pieces is just getting started.

Being armed doesn’t automatically make you a defender of freedom.

If you’re, say, armed yet constantly talk about how other people that disagree with you don’t deserve freedoms, then you’re an armed thug.
