Apple, Intel, Morgan Stanley to Back Gay Marriage at Supreme Court

Some of America’s largest corporations, including Apple, Intel, Facebook, and Morgan Stanley, are joining together to argue in favor of same sex marriage at the Supreme Court.

Dozens of companies, including Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Morgan Stanley (MS), are planning to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, saying bans in 41 states harm workplace morale and undermine recruiting.

The group, which also includes Facebook Inc. (FB) and Intel Corp., (INTC) will make its case this week as the high court prepares to take up California’s Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative that halted gay marriage after it was allowed for five months.

“No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalized by Proposition 8 and similar laws,” the companies will argue, according to a copy of the brief provided by Orrick Herrington Sutcliffe LLP, the law firm representing the group.

I don’t expect all of you to understand but I am constantly amazed at the quirky workings of the writers mind. I’ve been working on this story for awhile, set in the southwest, based on immigration struggles. I have some good characters and I good idea of how I want the end product to flow but I was having a hard time stringing together a strong narrative out of everything.

Then, earlier today while I was in the laundry room of all places, it suddenly came together in my mind. It was like every single piece suddenly fell into place and I felt like a darned fool for not having seen it before.

Seems to me one of the purposes of marriage is to foster procreation, and last time I checked its impossible for a man to impregnate another man or a woman another woman. If society doesn’t procreate what happens to it?

1) Your assumption about the ‘purpose’ of marriage is incorrect

3) You’re confusing your units of analysis. Society can reproduce itself even if every family unit doesn’t. Fallacy of composition
4) Idle speculation about society not reproducing itself is insignificant when it comes to a contemporary human rights issue which can be easily addressed.

Also, the definition of marriage is whatever people define it to be - there’s no True Definition out there to be discovered.

Funny, Miranda rights have been held as Constitutional under the SCOTUS.

I’ve no doubt Fischer is one of those nutters who thinks that SCOTUS has no Constitutional authority for “judicial review,” that its job is only to rule on whether a law is constitutional or not, while Congress can choose simply to ignore it.

It’s too simplistic, but it’s nothing crazy.

It’s extremely simplistic and borders on the apocalyptic. Never heard of him until now and he probably has a devout following by the looks of things. Once again not writing for knowledge but to drive an audience. Wal-Mart sales were down because of the payroll tax increase and downward indicators of consumer confidence. That does not signal the end of Wal-Mart and other big box stores. It’ll be a long time before all American get to shop at small family run organic food boutiques.

If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.

As well as the fact it has been upheld numerous times by the SCOTUS.

I don’t see what’s apocalyptic. I agree that the era of the huge stores is over, except for a few that manage to fit a niche perfectly.

And his first portion, about how discretionary income has sunk and that’s a prime reason for the draw-down of big box stores is right— but he’s wrong if he thinks that means local places are going to be at an advantage.

Most Jewish authorities will agree that G-d prohibited anal intercourse (though it’s worded as laying with a man as with a woman). Any more than this is subject to debate. And you won’t find one prohibition in the Hebrew bible about female same-sex sexual relationships (though it’s understood to be prohibited in the Talmud; which no Christian considers law)

There’s nothing about “lifestyles” that I’ve ever seen.

In the Constitution (as written by the Founders), women have no right to vote, slavery was legal, and blacks counted as 3/5 of person. Any other derps Bryan feels like sharing?

There’s nothing there that Fischer would disagree with, other than blacks probably shouldn’t count for more than half a person.
