don’t need a TV, but I’m beginning to think about upgrading my point and shoot Sony Cybershot to something that gives me more options. I’d like a wireless remote to cute down on motion blur.

I keep hearing about “Robur” but I think I got lucky as I don’t recall reading anything by it. No loss, eh?

While clearing out my mom’s place last week I found my dad’s Van Cliburn album. I think I’ll have to give it a play today.

Egyptian Cleric Abu Islam: Christianity Emerged from Penis Worship; Christian Women Raise Dogs to Replace Husbands

Following are excerpts from an address by Egyptian cleric Abu Islam, which aired on Al-Omma TV (via the Internet) on Feburary 13, 2013.

Egyptian cleric Abu Islam: I swear to God the Almighty – and believe me, I am not lying – that the Church worship originated in the worship of the penis. I swear to God. This is documented in dozens of pictures.

Let me tell you something – it’s indecent, but true. Take a look at a picture of Jesus, and you’ll see a penis, right here. Or is it on this side? Oh, it’s on the right side. A penis, right here. There are many pictures like this. They worship it.

[…]

[Christian women] raise cats and dogs as a substitute for husbands. They train their dogs to play the husband. I swear to God, I am not lying. They buy dogs for this purpose. They train dogs to play the husband on them. Christian women do that.

[…]

Oh my, he’s on to us. Now I know why my wife wanted a dog.

Woof! Woof!

re: #5 Lidane

Oh damn, he was a great talent and very nice man. When I was a kid, he judged one of our piano competitions during the Tri-State Music Festival in OK. Most all of us got a certificate of achievement or some such thing for participating. I recently found mine with his signature on it going through a bunch of old family pictures and memorabilia. He was a sweet, gentle, and encouraging man who made an impact on all of us. He will be missed.

Is it too much to ask to see a nice, high-quality, large-screen monitor that doesn’t include 1001 shitty versions of apps that already exist on every other modern electronic device in the house (and thus add that onto the cost)?

Oklahoma students know less about evolution after Biology I than they did before taking it
If this is true, its utterly shameful and I fear for the future of America! Scott Kaufman reports, A study published in the latest edition of Evolution: Education and Outreach demonstrated "the average student...completed the Biology I course with increased confidence in their biological evolution knowledge yet with a greater number of biological evolution misconceptions and, therefore, less competency in the subject." The study, ...

A 12-Year-Old’s Trek of Despair Ends in a Noose at the Border
Noemi Álvarez Quillay took the first steps of the 6,500-mile journey to New York City from the southern highlands of Ecuador on Tuesday, Feb. 4, after darkness fell. A bashful, studious girl, Noemi walked 10 minutes across dirt roads that cut through corn and potato fields, reaching the highway to Quito. She carried a small suitcase. Russ Campbell’s Blog: Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act Seems Now on Solid Ground
Now that a Senate committee has recommended nine changes to Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act, the legislation seems pretty solid. And, since Pierre Poilievre has, apparently, indicated privately that he's open to changes, an amended version of the bill will likely become law by this summer. We would probably have gotten to this point earlier had not the minister responsible for the bill ...

Why the Temperature of the Yellow Sea Is a Big Deal, and Other Questions About the South Korean Ferry Disaster
The boat ran into trouble several dozen miles from Jindo, an island that sticks out of South Korea's southwestern corner like a little toe. Jindo is surrounded by a group of even smaller islands that are slightly farther afield from the mainland. The ferry was curving around those small islands at the time it issued a distress call. What caused the disaster? We ...

Calgary stabbings: How knife crime in Canada can cause ‘moral panic’
What Calgary police chief Rick Hanson called the "worst mass murder" in the city's history didn't end at the barrel of a gun. Instead, the 22-year-old suspect identified on Tuesday as Matthew de Grood is accused of entering the kitchen at a house party, taking "a large knife" and using it to fatally stab four men and one woman, all of whom were students ...

New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Ben Mathis-Lilley, Slate: New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Instead of pushing for a Constitutional amendment, which would have to be ratified in 38 states, advocates ask individual state legislatures to pass an agreement: that they'll pledge all their presidential electors to the winner of the national popular vote as soon as enough other states pass the law to ...

The Insane History of Rockets at Jet Propulsion Laboratories
The Rocket Boys In the late 1930s, a group of Caltech graduate students were booted off campus after blowing up (part of!) their building during a rocket test gone awry. Unwilling to give up on the joy of semi-controlled explosions, the students and a few of their friends headed into the San Gabriel Mountains. They picked a deserted gully -- Arroyo Seco -- ...
