Antonia Scalia: desegregation of buses is nothing more than racial entitlement, which as history has shown us, are incredibly hard to get rid of.

Unfortunately, the statue of Rosa Parks is among some unpleasant company: Why Does the Capitol Still Whitewash White Supremacists?

Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America, is there. So is Alexander Stephens, the man Davis tapped as second-in-command of the Confederacy. Here’s how the office of the Architect of the Capitol, which oversees Statuary Hall (and every other statue-related corridor of the Capitol), describes Stephens’ life’s work:

Always in frail health, Stephens was nonetheless a dedicated statesman, an effective leader, and a powerful orator, always seeking moderation and peace. Abraham Lincoln, serving in Congress with Stephens, admired and befriended him; John Quincy Adams wrote a poem in his honor. Although opposed to secession and differing with Jefferson Davis over states rights and nullification, Stephens served as the Confederacy’s vice president.

Stephens was so adamantly anti-secession that he only agreed to support the principle when he was asked politely.

He was also, the bio notes, “a powerful orator.”

No kidding. Stephens is most famous for a speech he delivered in Savannah in 1861, shortly after agreeing to help the southern states wage an armed conflict in defense of keeping black people enslaved in perpetuity. It was called the “Cornerstone Speech,” on account of its simple premise—that the single foundational principle behind the Confederacy was the belief that not all men are created equal:

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science. It has been so even amongst us. Many who hear me, perhaps, can recollect well, that this truth was not generally admitted, even within their day. The errors of the past generation still clung to many as late as twenty years ago. Those at the North, who still cling to these errors, with a zeal above knowledge, we justly denominate fanatics. All fanaticism springs from an aberration of the mind from a defect in reasoning. It is a species of insanity.

Who wants to guess the answer is something something State’s Rights? If it’s you, come collect your prize!!

…the President is hereby authorized to invite each and all the States to provide and furnish statues, in marble or bronze, not exceeding two in number for each State, of deceased persons who have been citizens thereof, and illustrious for their historic renown or for distinguished civic or military services such as each State may deem to be worthy of this national commemoration

So it’s because Kentucky (birth) or Mississippi (Senator) or something decided that their biggest contribution to the Union was trying to tear it apart.

Richard Land Explains How to Tell Your Gay Friends They Can’t Join the Boy Scouts

Co-host C.J. Wheeler asked Land how to tell her gay peers and colleagues, “You’re my friend, but I don’t want you to be a Boy Scout leader. You’re my friend, but I’m tired of your agenda being forced down my throat.” She lamented that “it’s a hard world to really walk in out there” for “the average person out there who has friends in these communities,” because apparently life is really tough for straight people who support discrimination against their gay friends.

Land explained that gays and lesbians shouldn’t be treated any differently, except when it comes to their inclusion in the Boy Scouts, marriage and other social institutions. He told Wheeler to tell her gay friends that she respects them but thinks that if they are allowed to join the Boy Scouts they will jeopardize the ability of the organization to “protect children” and consequently “human tragedies will follow.”

Land also explained that “the homosexual activists have gone after [cultural] icons” such as the military, marriage and Disney in order to realize their “breathtaking” agenda.

Boehner Bars Foreign Congressional Delegations Due To Sequester

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told his caucus on Wednesday that due to automatic budget cuts set to take place March 1, known as sequestration, lawmakers will no longer be allowed to go on foreign trips, or CODELs.

“The House Administration Committee has already notified leadership, committee, and member offices in the House that there will be spending cuts in their offices to comply with the sequester. And the speaker told the members today that in addition to those spending cuts, he is suspending the use of military aircraft for official travel by House members,” a leadership aide told the Cable. “The Speaker believes this is the prudent and responsible course of action, and it goes above and beyond the spending cuts the House will be implementing to comply with the president’s sequester.”

The media really does want to buy into this idea that both sides are to blame, and the GOP getting up on TV and declaring it won’t abide by any deal that includes a single cent of new revenues is the same as Obama saying the cuts the GOP insisted on being made will be painful to the country.

And this last enactment, not a single vote in the Senate against it. And the House is pretty much the same. Now, I don’t think that’s attributable to the fact that it is so much clearer now that we need this. I think it is attributable, very likely attributable, to a phenomenon that is called perpetuation of racial entitlement. It’s been written about. Whenever a society adopts racial entitlements, it is very difficult to get out of them through the normal political processes.

Wow. I’m almost speechless. He really is a jerk! How is treating a group of people (Blacks) fairly and like other people (Whites) conferring an entitlement on that group of people?

Sigh.

p.s. I guess in his warped mind allowing gays to marry is giving them an entitlement (even though it’s just allowing them to do what straights have always been allowed to do).

101 Feline Fearless Leader  Wed, Feb 27, 2013 2:50:33pm

OT: Quick Feline Overlord update.

Feline Overlord the Younger (aka L.C.) got hit in the eye or something on Sunday. He was rubbing at it constantly and holding it closed (implying pain), so I put some artificial tears ointment in it and kept an eye on him. He was still holding it closed on Monday at lunch so I got a vet appt for him that afternoon and took him in.

Wasn’t his “regular” vet (his first visit there was just last week), but instead the newest vet in the practice of the three. She put some stain in the eye and took a look with a black light. Turns out he had a corneal ulcer right there in the center of his right eye. Fairly large, but shallow. Also some greenish discharge, so we were worried about an infection as well. So he came home with some eye drops to keep the eye dilated and some antibiotic ointment.

He was a good camper for getting stuff put in his eye and had a follow-up appointment today. And was acting fairly normal the last day or so as well.

The follow-up this afternoon showed that the ulcer healed up cleanly (no stain being absorbed by the cornea). So he just gets the antibiotic ointment for a few more days and hopefully will be right as rain.

I’m beginning to worry he is going to be a hypochondriac if he starts enjoying getting chauffeured around the streets of Philadelphia in a cat carrier.

Off to give him and his roommate their dinner.

102 kirkspencer  Wed, Feb 27, 2013 2:51:31pm

For almost ten years, now, I’ve thought Scalia was having mental problems of some sort. His contributions started including more and more hearsay, more building on his opinions stated as authority than precedent. I have been expecting him to cross the line with verbal remarks for some time.

Today he came close. Him saying that the question was one Congress should not answer despite that being the written word of the constitution and its amendments shocked many listeners. The passage Gus quoted bothered even more. He did not ask questions for the most part. Instead he made mini-lectures, with the questions being rhetorical flourishes. It sounded like Beck or O’Reilly up there.

I don’t think it was enough, still, to see a push for his resignation. It was enough, however, that when that push comes the surprise will be far less.

It’s totally awesome that our first black President gets to unveil Rosa Parks’ statue. Think about it—from the back of the bus to the Oval Office in less than 60 years. We have a long way to go yet, but it’s still pretty darned wonderful and I’m glad I lived long enough to see it (I didn’t think I would).

President Obama is standing on countless brave shoulders every time he gets up to speak to us.

Okay, I’d better get back to work before I get all sentimental & weepy.

At the back of the courtroom Wednesday, 17-year-old Esther Sorg and 18 other students from Wilmington Christian Academy, about an hour southwest of Columbus, listened in as part of a school field trip.

Sorg said her science classes include evolution and it seems public school classes could include the creationist perspective without harm.

“My eighth-grade science class was taught from a Christian perspective, but we discussed evolution as well,” she said. “I thought that was good because I wanted to know what the current theories were.”

And she fails Science 101.

Yeah, that’s what I thought - that .SWF extension means it’s a file that would normally be loaded and handled by the Adobe Flash Player if it’s installed in your browser. If you’re being asked to download it, that means Flash Player either is not installed or the configuration got hosed somehow, and the only thing the browser can do is ask if you want to download the file instead.

“Or George W. Bush saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to invade Iraq because I can’t get the aircraft carriers I need?’” Or even Bill Clinton saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to attack Saddam Hussein’s intelligence headquarters,’ … because of some budget document?”

Gee. Maybe this because this has never happened to any other president before is the reason.

Reset won’t result in losing anything.

I think I have a known problem, and I don’t think the Firefox reset will help. Here’s the point I came to before:

Solution 2: Downgrade Flash

If updating RealPlayer did not resolve the issue or Flash is constantly crashing, you should uninstall Flash 11.3 and downgrade to Flash 10.3. You can find steps for downgrading Flash in: Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again

I just installed the latest Flash, and I don’t think I have to revert because I can still see some videos, but it didn’t fix the problem either. I can see the video here for instance, but if I go to YouTube, I get the message that I need to install the latest Flash (which I just did). I think the cure is a new ‘puter.

So, what about a job offer?

They have to keep telling themselves that the cuts themselves are so minor that they’re meaningless, which sort of makes one wonder why the sequester was such a terrible thing that it had to be pinned on Obama and why they ever thought it a meaningful way of enforcing a deal by the supercommittee.

Other RW figures like David Horowitz who was about as red as you can be in his early years. Robert Spencer once worked at a Communist bookstore, Revolution Books.

Nah, I can smell it from here.

I notice that the whole little final bit of her rant is the usual BS I’ve been hearing from the Neo-Confederates of late, this view that the country is on the cusp of collapsing into anarchy, the government knows it, and that’s why they’re getting all the guns and bullets.

Pssst. The government makes bullets, at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and other places.

Woodward at war

Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’ ”

“They have to be willing to live in the world where they’re challenged,” Woodward continued in his calm, instantly recognizable voice. “I’ve tangled with lots of these people. But suppose there’s a young reporter who’s only had a couple of years — or 10 years’ — experience and the White House is sending him an email saying, ‘You’re going to regret this.’ You know, tremble, tremble. I don’t think it’s the way to operate.” The White House declined to comment for this story.

Woodward also said that based on his reporting for the book, Obama deserves more of the blame for scuttling the grand bargain of 2011 that would have put sequestration to rest long ago. “He changed the deal and it blew up,” Woodward said. “I mean, you look at the facts, and even by the White House accounts by his aides, he was making a last-minute change.”

Woodward thinks there is still a grand bargain to be had between Obama and Boehner, with tax reform as a huge component. “Sit down and work through this,” he said. “I can see exactly how you come up with a deal that would dispose of lots of things.” Woodward, who helped bring down one presidency and has written instant history on every one since, added: “Color me a little baffled. I don’t understand this White House. Do you?”

Richard Land Explains How to Tell Your Gay Friends They Can’t Join the Boy Scouts

Land is a full-on Southern-fried RWNJ; here’s a couple of his greatest hits, courtesy of his Wiki:

Land was the primary author of the Land letter, an open letter sent to President George W. Bush by leaders of the religious right in October 2002 which outlined a “just war” argument in support of the subsequent military invasion of Iraq.

[…]

Land advocates for a fundamentalist biblical position on issues ranging from religious liberty to the economy when he appears on radio and television news programs. In 2005, Land was recognized as one of the “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America” by Time Magazine.

Land has been appointed to a Board of Reference for the establishment of the Judge Paul Pressler School of Law in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana. The facility, which will stress the Creator God, inalienable rights, and original intent of the U.S. Constituiton, will be tied to Baptist-affiliated Louisiana College in Pineville.[4]

[…]

On the March 31, 2012 edition of Richard Land Live!, Land accused the Obama administration and civil rights leaders of using the Trayvon Martin case to deliberately stir up racial tension and “gin up the black vote” for Obama in the 2012 election. His comments were criticized by several black Southern Baptist pastors, who felt they reversed a long effort by the SBC to distance itself from a past history of racism. One of those pastors, Dwight McKissic, even announced he would introduce a resolution repudiating Land’s remarks.[6] However, Land refused to back down, saying that he would not “bow to the false god of political correctness.”[7] However, he subsequently wrote an open letter of apology for “any hurt or misunderstanding” that his words might have caused.[8]

On April 14, Baptist blogger Aaron Weaver discovered that Land’s commentary on the Martin case had been lifted almost verbatim and without attribution from a column written by Jeffrey Kuhner of the The Washington Times. According to Weaver, while Land included a link to the article in show notes that were posted online, he didn’t disclose that his commentary was based almost entirely on that column.[9] Weaver subsequently discovered that Land had also lifted material in previous broadcasts from other sources as well and passed them off as his own words.[10]

In response, the ERLC’s executive committee removed the entire archive of past broadcasts of Richard Land Live! and launched an internal investigation. It also expressed concern that Land’s comments about the Martin shooting “opened wounds from the past.”[11][12] The committee released the findings of its investigation on June 1. It reprimanded Land for using “hurtful, irresponsible, insensitive, and racially charged words” about the Martin case, and apologized to Martin’s family. It also found that Land had used “carelessness and poor judgment” in lifting material from other sources without attribution, calling it a case of clear plagiarism. However, it found no evidence that Land had plagiarized any of his written work. The committee also announced that Richard Land Live! would be canceled as soon as its contract with distributor Salem Radio Network allowed it to do so, saying that the show was “not congruent with the mission of the ERLC.”[13] The next day, Land announced on the weekly edition of Richard Land Live! that the show was leaving the air, effective immediately.[14]

Land was quick to praise the 2012 election of Fred Luter as the first African-American to preside over the Southern Baptist Convention.[15]

So telling someone that they’ll regret doing something is a threat?

355 Gus  Wed, Feb 27, 2013 6:23:45pm

Guys about to jump off a 2nd story window… drunk…

YOU’RE GOING TO REGRET THIS!

That’s a threat?

Sounds more like advising caution. E.g., if you know that the story just isn’t there, and someone insists on running it, then that person will look foolish once the facts come out.

depends if it’s done with a “certain” accent or not.

So, I googled Elephant sex and it came up the first page was nothing but Elephant Porn. NO wiki, no Nat Geo or Disc Channel, just Youtube and more Youtube.

heh

a number of years ago i had a job where my supervisor insisted on doing code reviews (i’m a software engineer, and code reviews are supposed to be done by peers). before locating any actual errors or poor programming practice, he would insist that all code comments be complete sentences starting with a capital letter and ending with a period (all programmers please groan on cue here)

i refuse to capitalize and to provide any punctuation beyond the minimum needed for comprehension in honor of this moron

What Woodward claims: “I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

What the wingnuts are saying: “You’re going to regret this.”

“Because he was a cockroach, Archy was unable to operate the shift key on the typewriter (he jumped on each key to type; since using shift requires two keys to be pressed simultaneously, he physically could not use capitals).”

Point made.

What?!? So you didn’t enter your comments in the linguistic equivalent of RPN - and then tell him that made them more logically formatted than using Standard English sentence structure?

;)

My few code reviews generally led to the discovery of semi-snarky comments somewhere in the code. Especially if I was modifying/fixing other people’s work that had not been commented well in the first place.
