Why Wasn’t Chris Christie Invited to CPAC?

Signs of humanity detected - must reject
Politics • Views: 31,982

Thanks to American Conservative Union chairman Al Cardenas, we now know why New Jersey Governor Chris Christie wasn’t invited to CPAC this year: he’s too sympathetic to disaster victims and poor people who need medical help: The Real Reason Why Chris Christie Wasn’t Invited to CPAC.

In other words, he’s not quite heartless enough.

Cardenas, whose group organizes the conference, wrote in an e-mail to National Journal that while CPAC was “proud” to invite Christie last year based on his record of balancing the budget and taking on teachers unions, Christie’s record over the past year is far less conservative.

“CPAC is like the all-star game for professional athletes; you get invited when you have had an outstanding year,” Cardenas said. “Hopefully he will have another all-star year in the future, at which time we will be happy to extend an invitation. This is a conservative conference, not a Republican Party event.”

Cardenas cited Christie’s decision to expand Medicaid under President Obama’s health care law and his support of a $60 billion aid package for Hurricane Sandy victims, which he argued was filled with wasteful spending.

“You get invited when you have had an outstanding year.” That must be why Mitt Romney was invited to speak.

Now, y’see, I’d have thought guiding your traditionally-low-risk state through a hurricane with relatively minor loss of life and property would count as an “all-star year” for a governor.

But what do I know? He showed up in a compromising photograph with a dead girl live boy duly-elected President of the United States.

So that’s the reason they invited Willard RMoney and Sarah of Wasilla?

So in other words, they felt that he wasn’t enough of a Grinch to meet their high standards.

To be fair, the Republican Party’s Grinchdom standards are exceptionally high.

Snubbed from the moment he appeared alongside the President and demanded the GOP bring the Sandy aid to the floor in Congress for an up-down vote.

The rwnj have basically given him the “you’re dead to me look”. Wont hurt Christie when he runs for reelection in November, but his national aspirations would take a hit because the GOP requires kowtowing to the most conservative elements in the party, no matter what.

I thought he was a bit of a jerk- still do to a degree but it was hard not to be touched as a fellow beach goer when he talked about the devastation on the boardwalk due to Sandy. I also though it was admirable when he basically told the Fox News reporters who were upset that he wasn’t a partisan hack to basically screw off. I’d never vote for him for president but I don’t think he’s an uncaring jerk. Wrong ideas IMO but that’s different than just not caring about those less well off than you like say Jindal and Ryan.

Fox contributor Monica Crowley: ‘Republicans have done nothing but compromise’

Fox News Channel contributor Monica Crowley on Wednesday denied that Republicans in Congress were using obstruction as a key strategy against President Barack Obama

“President Obama and the Democrats had massive majorities in his first two years, so lets get off the obstructionist point,” she said. “After that, when the Republicans got control of the House, Republicans have done nothing but compromise. They tried to compromise on the tax ceiling. They compromised on the fiscal cliff. They gave President Obama the tax hike he wanted. Where is the balance coming from the President?”

Fox News host Megyn Kelly noted the tax increase was set to go into effect due to expiring tax breaks.

“They could have blocked that,” Crowley claimed. “They gave it to him.”

Chris Christie and Chuck Hagel are Republicans who don’t always agree with the right-wing party line. Neither is passionately dedicated to undermining the President. Each has a streak of independence. Neither puts party entirely before country.

In my opinion, these are admirable qualities. But in the right-wing echo chamber, these qualities are highly offensive.

Rep. Louie Gohmert: The sequester an Obama conspiracy to fund ‘ACORN-like groups’

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) suggested Wednesday the sequester was a conspiracy by President Barack Obama to cut defense spending and raise money for community organizing groups.

Speaking on the House floor, Gohmert said the timing of Obama’s meeting with congressional leaders over the sequester was evidence the President really wanted the across-the-board budget cuts to happen. He claimed the sequester was actually a plot by Obama to cut defense spending and transfer money to “ACORN-like” groups that would help elect Democratic candidates.

Officials often threaten reporters that they will “regret” printing something that is untrue, but Woodward took the remark as a threat.

3) I’m pretty sure if these threats are commonplace then Woodward would be correct in interpreting the threatening statement as a threat.

Wow, no one goes on Hannity unless they have an agenda a mile long.

Rep. Keith Ellison hammers Sean Hannity: You’re a shill for the Republican Party

Hannity began his segment by claiming President Barack Obama was to blame for looming across-the-budget cuts known as the sequester. The conservative Fox News host insisted the President was “fearmongering” about the consequences of the cuts and played an irreverent mash-up of Obama’s recent speeches.

“You’re the worst excuse for a journalist I’ve ever seen,” Ellison said after being introduced.

Hannity asked for Ellison to repeat himself, claiming he couldn’t hear him. Instead, Ellison continued to blast Hannity, saying his mash-up was deceptive “yellow journalism” and a “breach of every journalistic ethic I know of.” Ellison told Hannity he was a “shill for the Republican Party,” but Hannity repeatedly insisted he was a “registered conservative.”

Who ran for President for the Conservative Party last year?

There is a Conservative Party of New York so he probably does belong to that but that’s a funny way to claim you’re not a hack for the Republican Party by citing your membership in a party that pretty much always endorses the Republican candidate unless they deem them not conservative enough.

Bob Woodward must be the finest investigative journalist of all time in order to discover Dan Quayle’s inner genius.

So Woodward is going to save the honor of the republic by going on the show of anti-gay bigot Hannity.

What a surprise that Killgore supports all that.

Riveting! /

Readers will find little here to change perception of Vice President J. Danforth Quayle as a lightweight with a short attention span, a confused sense of history and lacking in “the vision thing.” In a reprint of a controversial seven-part series that appeared in the Washington Post , journalists Woodward and Broder describe Quayle’s 1976 entry into politics, his contributions as a senator, his aggressive campaign to be picked by George Bush as his 1988 running mate, his ordeal-by-ridicule throughout that campaign and his accomplishments as vice-president. There’s an entire chapter on Quayle’s golf obsession (“I can’t get enough of it!”) in which the authors aver that the game is a major part of his life, essential to his psychic balance and a key to understanding him. We’re shown that another key is his formidable wife Marilyn, and Woodward and Broder do a fine job describing her role in her husband’s career. She comes off as having more substance than he. And she is more interesting to read about in this short but informative book

Kansas proposes law to allow Doctor’s to lie to women

The Kansas Senate Judiciary Committee recommended a bill yesterday that would effectively allow doctors to lie or withhold information about debilitating genetic conditions or birth defects in order to influence women’s decisions about their pregnancies.

Kansas SB 142 provides blanket protection from “wrongful birth” lawsuits to doctors, with section 1(a) reading:

“No civil action may be commenced in any court for a claim of wrongful life or wrongful birth, and no damages may be recovered in any civil action for any physical condition of a minor that existed at the time of such minor’s birth if the damages sought arise out of a claim that a person’s action or omission contributed to such minor’s mother not obtaining an abortion.”

Honestly, I haven’t read about what happened so I can’t objectively comment but frankly it’s a huge turn off that he’s appearing on Sean Hannity’s radio show to make his point. Hannity has an obvious agenda against this administration. If he were appearing on someone who didn’t have an agenda, I’d be more interested in what he has to say but the fact of the matter is he’s appearing on one of the biggest knuckledraggers against this president. No, this isn’t really true. He’s famous for Watergate, and he’s written a lot of books, but he’s not really considered a great journalist. His style has come into a lot of criticism— a lot of reporters feel he gets co-opted very easily, as he did with Bush.

Tell me, where’s the substance here? That someone at the WH didn’t want him to write a story? Happens every day that staffers pressure reporters not to write stories. Unless he had reason to believe that Sperling is now a violent criminal, the threat exists only in his head.

Woodward’s credibility took a huge hit when he declared he was absolutely certain there were WMDs in Iraq. A lot of people saw that as proof of his complete co-optment by the Bush administration, but whatever the case, it was both wrong and silly of him to say, as a journalist.

Yep. Really, it’s admriable what he did in the early 70’s and it’s appreciated but he shouldn’t get a virtual “get out of jail free” card. I’ll give an example. I liked Bill Clinton a lot as president but his attitude towards then candidate Obama in 2008 annoyed me and I did criticize him for that.

Also, Bill fucking lied to me on TV (“I did not have sex with that woman”). I chose to believe him, and was proven wrong. I hold a grudge.

Though, that’s only on the personal level. On the political level, he’s a brilliant speaker and supports stuff I support.

UPSHOT: I think he’s personally scum, but a useful advocae for stuff I want to see get done.

What Democrat in 76, other than Carter?

Curious. I was 6.

I think 80 would have weakened any President; what response to the situation? Either you wait and negotiate, and look weak, or you send in troops who get killed and look even more weak.

Only a victory would allay the bullshit… and it wouldn’t even do that, because (IMAO) in the 80s and 90s, we has no idea about assymetrical warfare.

A better prepared Operation EAGLE CLAW might have succeeded if ruthlessly executed. It’s also possible that a more aware administration might have seen the danger in Iran better and closed the US embassy before it could have been stormed.

Not a respectful critic mind you but a man who has shown that he will do anything to slander this president over anything.

He was interviewed by Politico which started this whole thing about the ‘threat’. After that he went on Wolf Blitzer’s show and Hannity is tomorrow. Looks like he’s making the rounds on the news sites and cable channels. I have a feeling he will be on a bunch of Sunday morning programs.

I agree with you: a more aware administration would have taken the danger into account.

Failing to take the (future) danger or ramifications into account seems to be a perpetual American failing, across party and faction.

re: #176 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

No, this isn’t really true. He’s famous for Watergate, and he’s written a lot of books, but he’s not really considered a great journalist. His style has come into a lot of criticism— a lot of reporters feel he gets co-opted very easily, as he did with Bush.

He’s not a liberal icon. He’s one of the reporters that followed the story, but he didn’t do it because of liberal principles, but because he was a reporter. He’d be a weird choice of icon.

I don’t know about that. From Wiki:

He has been a recipient of nearly every other major American journalism award, including the Heywood Broun award (1972), Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Reporting (1972 and 1986), Sigma Delta Chi Award (1973), George Polk Award (1972), William Allen White Medal (2000), and the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Reporting on the Presidency (2002). In 2012, Colby College presented Woodward with the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for courageous journalism as well as an honorary doctorate.[8]

Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard called Woodward “the best pure reporter of his generation, perhaps ever.”[9] In 2003, Albert Hunt of The Wall Street Journal called Woodward “the most celebrated journalist of our age.” In 2004, Bob Schieffer of CBS News said, “Woodward has established himself as the best reporter of our time. He may be the best reporter of all time.”[10]c

I bet any reporter would love to have half of the career he’s had.

Woodward also spoke to Politico, and read out part of the email. He said he had been “yelled at” for about 30 minutes, and that the official wrote, “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today. You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

BuzzFeed’s Ben Smith wrote Wednesday night that the official was Sperling.

“Officials often threaten reporters that they will ‘regret’ printing something that is untrue, but Woodward took the remark as a threat,” Smith wrote.
Probably an assine way to act honestly but I just don’t see it as a threat.

The fact that Ellison swore on the Koran makes me happy as an American.

Religious diversity in Congress has been amped up a few notches by Hawaii. The island state just elected Hindu Tulsi Gabbard to the House and Buddhist Senator Mazie Hirono to the Senate, both of them Democrats.

When Gabbard takes her oath of office in January 2013, she’ll be sworn in over the Bhagavad Gita, Hinduism’s sacred book. Hirono, as a Buddhist, was sworn in to Congress in 2007 with no book at all.

and

Kyrsten Sinema was sworn into Congress Monday, but with a twist: She didn’t swear on a Bible. The newly elected representative for Arizona’s 9th district swore her oath of office on a copy of the Constitution instead. Sinema refuses to confirm she is an atheist, as many believe, saying merely that she is “not a member of a faith community” and that all Americans deserve both “freedom of religion and freedom from religion.”

Yup! ROCK US!

This is a reason to USA! USA! USA!, but many of our fellow countrymen won’t see it that way (morons).

The official said the email Woodward referenced “was sent to apologize for voices being raised in their previous conversation. The note suggested that Mr. Woodward would regret the observation he made regarding the sequester because that observation was inaccurate, nothing more. And Mr. Woodward responded to this aide’s email in a friendly manner.”

Forget it, Matt Drudge just cried “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!”

I guess today was about the Pope’s last day as leader of the Catholic Church.
He said he would spend his days in seclusion praying to God.
I didn’t know he was a Lakers fan.

Ah, ya gotta love it. The wingnuts have apparently wholeheartedly embraced this assertion that the only reason the sequester will be painful is because Obama wills it so. That he has the power to make the sequester painless or at least as painless as possible, but refuses to do so in order to “scare” people into hating Republicans for insisting on it in the first place.

At the same time, they also are totally convinced that the sequester will be so minor that nobody will notice, that the pain will be little felt if at all, and that when the doom and gloom predictions don’t come, the public will turn on Obama and be more supportive of further budgetary cuts.

I obviously picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.///

Back in the day before science, over time people always tended to drift away from religion (see Old Testament) and then a hurricane or a volcano or earthquake or flood would happen and kill a bunch of people and the true believers would seize the opportunity to remind those drifting souls that the major geologic event was just an example of God’s wrath and there’s plenty more where that came from and it would reel them back in for a while.

That said, the Church is tee-totally f*ed up right now and their best option to stay relevant in the next century is to call Vatican 3, Open up the priesthood to women and married men, and sell off church assets and art and give it to the poor to try to regain the high ground. Barring that, its going down like a jumbo jet at 30,000 feet that just lost both engines.

No, he totally busted Nixon. He earned every bit of his Pulitzer Prize for that and as far as I know has been considered one of the best reporters of all time by his peers. All of a sudden he’s be lambasted. When did he stop being an excellent reporter?

When he suggests that Obama obeying the law is ‘madness.’

So….at my new office today, a meeting with 2 others. Fellow worker who I could bury in productivity if given the chance, drops the good ole Obama quasi assassination joke. I just look down. She’s gone for 4 days, I’m going to subliminally and figuratively bury her and her work.

Shock.

I hate working with hater people.

I do love the way you think.

Quite a game in NY tonight, Hoops. Steph Curry was absolutely unconscious - dropped 52. Tyson Chandler got 28 boards.

Went all the way to the wire, Knicks won. Happy me, very entertaining game.

Cardenas cited Christie’s decision to expand Medicaid under President Obama’s health care law and his support of a $60 billion aid package for Hurricane Sandy victims, which he argued was filled with wasteful spending.

Al Cardenas, is another Hispanic South Florida Republican power broker whose political traction doesn’t exist much above north of Tampa FL, except in the minds of the Republican party, and the Florida legislature.
As for the rest of the Hispanics in the US; especially those from Mexico, Central & South American, not so much.
That Hispanic tone deafness is gonna bite the Republican party in the ass in the near future.

To reiteriate, I’d lose my respect for pretty much anyone who appeared on Hannity’s show, except maybe Teddy Roosevelt. And I’m pretty sure the only reason Teddy would get out of his grave would be to beat his ass.

I felt so bad for him when one of my state’s represenatives was being a total dick to him over the fact that he did his swearing in on a Qu’ran. Oh Virgil Goode, thanks for making Virginians look like a good example to the rest of the country.

One would think it might make a difference that the Qu’ran in question happened to be Thomas Jefferson’s personal copy.

Sheesh:

“You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

That is completely different from how Woodward spun / paraphrased the e-mail in his CNN interview. At this point, it’s hard to believe he’s not intentionally trolling the WH, injecting himself into the news and being a more-than-willing RW-prop.

BLITZER: What was said? Yes.

WOODWARD: It was said very clearly, you will regret doing this.

No it very clearly wasn’t.

re: #271 simoom

Intentionally misleading statement, take two:

WOODWARD: … I think if Barack Obama knew that was part of the communication’s strategy - let’s hope it’s not a strategy, but it’s a tactic that somebody’s employed, and said, look, we don’t go around trying to say to reporters, if you, in an honest way, present something we don’t like, that, you know, you’re going to regret this.
