Video: Bill Moyers With Zack Kopplin - Fighting Creeping Creationism

The creationist right never went away, and now they’re back stronger than ever
Politics • Views: 27,884

Anti-creationism activist Zack Kopplin joins Bill to talk about fighting laws and voucher programs that let publicly-funded creationist curriculum in the back door of American classrooms. Also on the program, journalist and historian Susan Jacoby talks about the role secularism and intellectual curiosity have played throughout America’s history.

These people really see themselves as the new Galileos, rebels against established, oppressive authority. There is no getting them away from that thinking, there is only containing the damage they can do to education and society.

These people really see themselves as the new Galileos, rebels against established, oppressive authority.

The problem is, they “support” their “creation science” with snippets from a religious text and misrepresentations of scientific data——-like their claims of tremendous gaps in the fossil record. ( Whenever a new fossil bridging a former gap materializes the creationists then see two gaps, one on either side of the new specimen!) Their “science” amounts to a series of speculations, tautologies and distortions. And they wonder why they are not taken seriously!

OT: Every so often the news comes to your neighborhood.
This morning a young kid was involved in a high speed chase with the police.
He blew through a red light and caused a huge wreck down the street.
It has been blocked off and closed. Everybody figures there were fatalities cause it’s been over 5 hours now and still closed with detectives combing and gathering data at the scene. I saw a van being towed away that was broad sided. It was totally destroyed and if children were in the van they had no hope. Sobering crash scene.

Good news: Chad says soldiers in Mali kill al Qaeda’s Belmokhtar

Chadian soldiers in Mali have killed Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the al Qaeda commander behind a bloody mass hostage-taking at an Algerian gas plant in January, Chad’s military said on Saturday.

His death would be a major blow to Islamist rebels in northern Mali who have been pushed into their mountain strongholds by French and African forces.

Thing is, the tactics being used to try to force creationism back into the classroom are the same that are being used to force a lot of archaic, small-minded ideas back into the intellectual commons. See also whining about how political correctness “stifles debates,” about charges of “racial entitlement,” and the numerous suggestions that the plethora of regulatory laws written over the decades to address free-market exploitation of workers and consumers alike are unnecessary if not unconstitutional because “the states should and could do the work better.”

I am glad on one hand that America has a tradition of open communication.

One does not have to posess a Grand poobah set of credentials to be have a voice in the discussion, but there is a growing tendency is to dismiss an overwhelmingly qualified consensus on matters such as Evolution or Global Warming on the grounds that they are some sort of oppressive cabal.

This overlooks the fact that they are objective, based on verifiable and repeatable facts and data, subject to peer review and also subject to revision when new obersvations and data arise.

10 b_sharp  Sat, Mar 2, 2013 1:33:19pm

The creationists have all the advantage, I mean have you ever seen eagles give birth to a bear? Of course not. Do you not realize that DNA has conclusively and finally disproved evolution? It’s in all the books.

True, which is why they hate the idea of peer-review, of multiple minds looking at, testing, and verifying their conclusions. To test is to deny faith, and that’s what their assertions generally run on, faith that the conclusion they’ve reached is the only possibly accurate one and any denial of it is to deny their faith. For so many of these witless wonders, the idea of a central authority that holds the power to determine what is “right” is only good if it is claiming divine right rather than the scientific method. They imagine themselves as modern-day Galileos, fighting against the authority of the Church, but in reality they want to reinvest power in the Church to decide what is science and what isn’t based upon interpretations of “God’s will.”

Romney Says Sequester ‘Golden Moment’ Squandered by Obama

President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress are squandering an “almost once-in-generational opportunity for America to solve its fiscal problems,” former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said.

That opportunity, Romney said in a “Fox News Sunday” interview, according to the transcript, was the combination of the expiration of Republican President George W. Bush’s income- tax cuts at the end of 2012 and the automatic spending cuts that went into effect yesterday.

Math fail:

In Voting Rights Arguments, Chief Justice Misconstrued Census Data

The number of black citizens eligible to vote in Massachusetts is 236,000, while it is 721,000 in Mississippi, more than three times that number. Therefore, according to Census officials, when looking at the estimated turnout rate in Massachusetts, the voting percentage for African-Americans at first blush is estimated at 39.3 percent. But the margin of error is 11.5 percentage points, meaning that the black voter turnout actually could be as high as 50.8 percent (or, conversely, as low as 27.8 percent).

No, that is not the correct “meaning”.

The point is that modern science is not compatible with a literal reading of the Scriptures. For many people, that is a litumus test of True Faith.

re: #52 Sol Berdinowitz

The point is that modern science is not compatible with a literal reading of the Scriptures approaching Scripture with a 2nd-grade reading comprehension level. For many people, that is a litumus test of True Faith.

Genesis chapter 1 consists of a creation narrative that starts from nothing and goes up until people.

Then it loops back, and…

Genesis chapter 2 consists of *another* creation narrative that starts from nothing and goes up until people.

But things happens in a different order. And God uses different methods. And it’s not exactly the same people. (Lilith? Huh?)

There’s clear, obvious evidence right there in the text, Chapters 1 and 2 so you’ll get to it right away, that the reader was never intended to take either narrative as a literal, factual recounting of events. That you’re meant to look for a deeper meaning, because metaphor is not a modern invention.

Creationists aren’t just scientifically wrong; they’re theologically wrong.

You need not convince me of that, but fundamentalists do not see these as the works of human beings in a particular historical and social setting who were inspired by God, they see them as being dictated by God and merely written out by human hands.

Any attempt at arguing the former view with them is seen as “relativism” or “revisionism” and rejected outright in favor of a literal reading of texts that are inconsistent within themselves as well as being incompatible with obersrved facts and modern science.

re: #83 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

The 70’s was an easy time for the Magical Balance Fairy. She mostly just had to pretend that white people looked good dancing disco.

Teri James, Pregnant Woman Allegedly Fired For Premarital Sex, Sues Christian School

Teri James, 29, told the news outlet that she did sign a two-page contract with San Diego Christian College that included a provision agreeing not to engage in “sexually immoral behavior including premarital sex.”

“I needed a job in this economy and so I never thought that anything would happen,” James explained to “Today.”

But James said she was humiliated after being pulled into her supervisor’s office last fall, where she was asked if she was pregnant and then was let go. After James lost her job, she claims the school offered a position to her now-husband, even though they were aware he’d had sex before getting married, too.

I love the Moyers/Jacoby interview. I commend Kopplin for his steadfast logic in the face of such idiocy.

But I really love this guy Robert Ingersoll! Secular thinking people need more leadership in the vein of a legend like Ingersoll. And that makes me miss guys like Hitchens all the more.

re: #95 abolitionist

Except that, as a private Christian school, they probably have the Get Out of the Fourteenth Amendment Free card of considering all employees to be “ministers.” Because ministers can be fired for “not adhering to the church’s beliefs,” and there’s no actual definition of “minister.”

It’s utterly perverse.
