Saturn’s North Polar Hexagon

Saturn’s north polar hexagon basks in the Sun’s light now that spring has come to the northern hemisphere. Many smaller storms dot the north polar region and Saturn’s signature rings, which appear to disappear on account of Saturn’s shadow, put in an appearance in the background.

The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft’s wide-angle camera on Nov. 27, 2012 using a spectral filter sensitive to wavelengths of near-infrared light centered at 750 nanometers.

The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 403,000 miles (649,000 kilometers) from Saturn and at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 21 degrees. Image scale is 22 miles (35 kilometers) per pixel.

That isn’t new.

What would be new would be the Republicans agreeing to substantial tax increases.

Can you go into more detail about how you think it’s a choreographed dance? It’s a pretty-sounding phrase, but maybe you could actually explain what you mean. Do you think McConnell, Boehner and Obama sit down and conspire on how to put Obama in a stranglehold where he’s unable to achieve almost anything, damaging his chance at any legacy and blocking his appointments?

The GOP is being massively obstructionist. It has been for a long time now. This is brutally honest to anyone who doesn’t have a vested interest in not looking at reality.

What they actually found was that if absolutely every regulation was adhered to and none were waived, then there would be minimal environmental impact. That means they can’t ask for any to be waived, and if they’re found in violation of any of them it’s a pre-judged decision that they’re damaging the environment. If all the regulations were actually strictly followed, it wouldn’t have much of an environmental impact.

The question is, as Varek points out, that the company has a bad track record. I’d rather see the government gouge a nice big fund out of them to put in escrow— I doubt that’ll happen.

The pipeline itself is not the problem. The development of the tar sands is the problem. Our lack of government investment in green energy is the problem.

I still think in the end the only way we’ll get significant greening going on in the US is from the military. They’re sadly the most forwarding-thinking group. I say we don’t cut defense spending at all, but we task the US military with solving the largest national security problem: AGW.

This’ll mean less time firing rockets at bad guys.

No, but it’s a rather simple thing to understand. All the carbon you exhale comes from food you eat. If you eat plants, they pull the carbon from the ground, or at night from the air. If you eat beef, you eat carbon they get from eating plants. This way there is no carbon added, just cycled through the biosphere.

Coal, oil and gas are all remains of plants buried and taken out of the carbon cycle that existed millions of years ago so releasing that carbon into the atmosphere by burning the fuel, in effect transfers carbon, and because it combines with Oxygen so easily when heated, CO2, from that time to our time.

Washington Republican: Bicycles cause more pollution than cars

The ranking Republican member on Washington state’s House Transportation Committee thinks that riding bicycles causes more pollution than driving cars, the Seattle Bike Blog reported Saturday.

State Rep. Ed Orcutt (R), pictured, wrote an email to a constituent who disagreed with his support for a new tax on the sales of bicycles, a proposal being considered as part of a larger piece of transportation legislation. Reached by the Seattle Bike Blog, he confirmed the email is real.

In his message, sent to the owner of a bicycle shop, Orcutt wrote: “If I am not mistaken, a cyclists [sic] has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider. Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.”

He added that when citizens drive cars they are helping to pay for the roads, whereas bicyclists “need to start paying for the roads they ride on rather than make motorists pay.”

Pro tip: Cooking eggplant can be difficult. Place sliced raw eggplant on a paper towel and sprinkle with salt. It softens the eggplant with otherwise will remain rock hard regardless of cooking time.

Here is a marinade that is really easy, and doesn’t overwhelm the taste of the chicken:

1/2 c. extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 Tbsp. balsamic, wine or cider vinegar
1 1/2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. paprika
3-4 cloves garlic, crushed.
1/2 tsp. herbes de provence

re: #35 Killgore Trout

There’s no dance when one person waits alone on the dance floor. The President’s offer has been essentially the same for years. He states it publicly in press conferences and speeches. It’s even spelled out for all to see on the white house website. He greatly desires to put the budget wars to bed with some sort of long term, stable deal.

Wonkblog: This is why Obama can’t make a deal with Republicans

The opening anecdote was drawn from a background briefing I attended with a respected Republican legislator who thought it would be a gamechanger for President Obama to say he’d be open to chained CPI — a policy that cuts Social Security benefits — as part of a budget deal.

The only problem? Obama has said he’s open to chained CPI as part of a budget deal. And this isn’t one of those times where the admission was in private, and we’re going off of news reports. It’s right there on his Web site. It’s literally in bold type. But key GOP legislators have no idea Obama’s made that concession.

On Feb. 13, Murphy wrote in Time that “six magic words can unlock the door to the votes inside the Republican fortress: Some beneficiaries pay more and chained CPI, budgetary code for slightly lowering benefit increases over time.” The only problem? Obama has said all these words[.]

This had led to a lot of Republicans fanning out to explain what the president should be offering if he was serious about making a deal. Then, when it turns out that the president did offer those items, there’s more furious hand-waving about how no, actually, this is what the president needs to offer to make a deal. Then, when it turns out he’s offered most of that, too, the hand-waving stops and the truth comes out: Republicans won’t make a deal that includes further taxes, they just want to get the White House to implement their agenda in return for nothing. Luckily for them, most of the time, the conversation doesn’t get that far, and the initial comments that the president needs to “get serious” on entitlements is met with sage nods.

My 89-year-old mom could totally kick his ass.

Epic if mama Alouette got on the twitter and in her own blunt words gave these idiots individual history lessons.

My mom cast her first vote for Truman in 1948, voted Democrat ever since. When I was in my GOP phase I thought she was a “moonbat” but I got to admit she was right all along.

How could that be if he blew himself up in 1996? When was the last bus bombing? They reached a peak about 10 years ago but there haven’t been any for YEARS.

227 Feline Fearless Leader  Sun, Mar 3, 2013 6:13:27pm

Hmm, one of the Feline Overlords just walked in and presented me with a kill. Dragged in it, dropped it at my feet, meowed, picked it up and took it back into the main room.

Luckily it was just a plastic grocery bag he stole from the drawer. But those thing are vicious before they are harvested and dried for use.

229 Vicious Babushka  Sun, Mar 3, 2013 6:13:55pm

I went into the Apple store at the mall today, just to browse around. Almost instantly some “genius” popped up so I told him I was interested in an iphone just to make him feel useful.

He was telling me how much I would have to pay to switch from my current carrier (t-mobile) just in order to even use a fucking iphone.

At the t-mobile store they let you browse for hours on end and you can’t find a normal-intelligence person to wait on you even if you want someone.
