Dumbest Man on Internet Recycles Another Right Wing Paranoid Fantasy, Gets Drudge Link

Jim Hoft exposes Obama’s plot to murder you with SEKRIT TANKS
Wingnuts • Views: 46,055
DERP

Whoever’s posting the links at Drudge Report really seems to enjoy the work of the Dumbest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft, because the estimable Gateway Pundit receives another Drudge benefaction today, for another long-debunked right wing paranoid fantasy:

Obama DHS Purchases 2,700 Light-Armored Tanks to Go With Their 1.6 Billion Bullet Stockpile | the Gateway Pundit.

Notice how Hoft deftly combines two wingnut fever dreams in his headline, connecting the ridiculous “tanks” lie with the equally crazed “bullet stockpile” story hyped last week by half-governor Sarah Palin, creating one massive, delirious right wing ball of anti-government fear. That’s why he gets the Drudge links.

This is getting a little creepy.
According to one estimate, since last year the Department of Homeland Security has stockpiled more than 1.6 billion bullets, mainly .40 caliber and 9mm.

DHS also purchased 2,700 Mine Resistant Armor Protected Vehicles (MRAP).

Modern Survival Blog reported…

Yes, Hoft’s source is a survivalist blog. And of course, it’s bogus fear-mongering hooey.

First, the DHS doesn’t have “tanks.” They have armored vehicles intended to be used in emergency situations like Hurricane Katrina, and in ICE raids against drug gangs along the Mexican border, where the criminals are known to possess military weaponry such as fully automatic rifles and grenade launchers.

But to make it even more sinister, the DHS is hiding these SCARY SEKRIT MURDER TANKS in plain sight, right on the front page of their border security section.

Here’s a classified photo of one of the SCARY MURDER TANKS terrorizing some helpless children back in 2010. (h/t: Gus.)

UPDATE at 3/4/13 2:48:40 pm

But wait, it gets even dumber! LGF contributor Gus dug up the announcement of the contract for this particular order of 2700 MRAPs (actually 2717), and it turns out that they’re being purchased by the Marine Corps … not the DHS.

Navistar Defense, L.L.C., Warrenville, Ill., is being awarded an $879,923,195 firm-fixed-priced delivery order 0023 under previously awarded contract (M67854-07-D-5032) for the procurement of 2,717 units of rolling chassis; 10 engineering change proposals; and 25 contract data requirements lists, for MaxxPro Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles. Work will be performed in West Point, Miss., and is expected to be completed by the end of October 2013. Procurement funds in the amount of $879,923,195 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The original contract was competitively procured. The Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, Va., is the contracting activity.

So what Hoft has discovered are secret tanks being bought by the DHS that aren’t secret and aren’t tanks, and aren’t being bought by the DHS.

UPDATE at 3/4/13 3:06:51 pm

Fox News host Lou Dobbs retweets Hoft’s false story:

Idiot.
Tanks have artillery. (Think of the cadence just like “Trix Are For kids!” so Jim can understand)

Isn’t this just a surplus buy taking advantage of the drawdown? The fact they are mine resistant is irrelevant other than being impervious to some violent weather. These are excellent vehicles to have in stand offs with gunmen and people down. LAPD had to borrow a brinks truck during the infamous North Hollywood bank heist. Nice of Brinks to help but sheesh.

The gun fetishists are so busy filling their heads with faux controversy and outrage, they have seem to fail to realize that the “trazillions” of bullets DHS is purchasing is pistol ammunition. Do they really think (I use the word generously) the government is going to “overthrow the country” with pistol ammunition? Fucking derps.

I don’t like the militarization of the police, but I recognize it’s in response to the firepower they’re coming up against. In addition, vehicles like this are great for disaster scenarios.

6 Kragar (Antichrist )  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 2:18:12pm

I remember pistol drills when I was in security forces.

60 rounds of 9mm ammo, morning and afternoon sessions, once a month

~100 Marines training a month

That is 144,000 rounds of pistol ammo used just in training by 100 marines in a year. That doesn’t count stockpiles set aside for actual duty, emergencies, etc, nor rifle ammo used when we did other field training.

Here’s the order figure.

Navistar Defense to Upgrade 2,717 Mine Resistant Vehicles

Navistar Defense LLC received a contract from the U.S. Army Contracting Command to conduct the installation work associated with its January order to upgrade 2,717 International MaxxPro Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles with a new vehicle chassis, according to Navistar. The $21 million contract is just one of Navistar’s many reset offerings aimed at revitalizing existing defense assets for future missions.

“We are focused on increasing the capabilities of our existing fleet with minimal impact to defense funding,” said Archie Massicotte, president of Navistar Defense. “The vehicle reset line we established for this installation work can also be utilized to restore older vehicles to like-new condition. Therefore, we are poised and ready to reset vehicles returning from deployment – either here at our facility or overseas.”

The installation contract retrofits vintage MaxxPro vehicles with a new rolling chassis, according to Navistar Defense. This chassis enhancement includes the addition of the DXM independent suspension, a MaxxForce 9.3 engine, 570-amp alternator and driveline, while leaving a residual chassis with a beam axle that can be reused. The retrofits will be conducted in West Point, Miss., and work is expected to be completed by the end of May 2012.

Continues.

I seriously doubt that the 2,717 is for DHS.

Vatican and Iran fight UN’s efforts to stop violence against women

Diplomats said the Holy See, Iran and Russia are leading attempts wipe out language in a draft final statement that says religion, custom or tradition must not be used as an excuse to avoid a government’s obligation to eliminate violence.

They also have opposed references to rape by a woman’s husband or partner, diplomats said.

“Violence against women must be seen as a human rights issue and that has nothing to do with culture or religion,” Norway’s Gender Equality Minister Inga Marte Thorkildsen told AFP.

“The Vatican, conservative religious forces within the United States and Europe, Catholic and Muslim countries are joining forces to stop women from gaining sexual rights,” the minister said, predicting tough negotiations during the two week conference.

“It has to do with power and equality and the lack of will to see women as valuable as men,” Thorkildsen added.

Obama renews budget offer to cut social safety nets

President Barack Obama raised anew the issue of cutting entitlements such as Medicare and Social Security as a way out of damaging budget cuts, a White House official said on Sunday, as both sides in Washington tried to limit a fiscal crisis that may soon hit millions of Americans.

Signaling he might be ready to explore a compromise to end automatic spending cuts that began late Friday, Obama mentioned reforming these entitlement programs in calls with lawmakers from both parties on Saturday afternoon.

This is why proud old white man & brave hero of the 19th century Antonin Scalia has said he is open to the constitution allowing any weapon as long as it can be held by “arms”.
That is his logic. Truly.
The constitution says “the right to bear arms”. Therefore any weapon that can be held, by arms, is allowed.
Therefore America’s True Patriots can(many already do regardless, because many are volunteer posse cops, and therefore have that truly frightening dispensation to purchase army surplus weaponry that are prohibited to citizens) own rocket and grenade launchers. Because after all: most Americans - real Americans, that is - understand that government is the enemy, and is likely run by Grays and Lizards.
We must be allowed the weaponry that can penetrate those commie IED shields! Otherwise we do not have Freeedumb!

When my wife and I were in handgun competition, we ran through a thousand rounds a month each. It was at least 200 shots to practice through the course just once. Keep in mind the matches we went to often had more than 100 competitors. That would be maybe 100,000 rounds used each month by us and our fellow competitors. We got everything in bulk. I can’t imagine what it takes for a big police force.

What makes him liberal in your view?

Also by any chance do you feel refreshed and ready to talk about abortion? I would love to have a polite and well mannered debate on the subject since I get so few chances to properly argue the topic!

well I thought his views on the issues outside of immigration were generally those of Democratic voters but it’s been awhile since I heard anything about him.

Christian Pseudo-Historian David Barton Lied About a Supreme Court Case… So I Spoke to the Case’s Namesake

A couple of weeks ago, he gave a presentation at Glen Meadows Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas where he said something unbelievable about the court case that removed mandatory Bible readings from public schools: Abington Township v. Schempp.

This is the reason, in Barton’s mind, why those readings came to a halt:

… They quoted Dr. Solomon Grayzel on the reason that we need to get the Bible out of schools… In the Supreme Court decision, this is what the Court said why the Bible has to come out of schools; the Court says this:

If portions of the New Testament were read without explanation, they could be, and had been, psychologically harmful to the child.

Time out. Let me see if I get this: if we keep reading the Bible in schools, our kids are going to suffer from brain damage? Yeah, that was the reason given by the Court for the removal of the Bible out of the classroom back in 62-63.

As Kyle Mantyla at Right Wing Watch points out, this is an unfair characaterization for two reasons:

1) The statement from Grayzel wasn’t the reason mandatory Bible readings were removed from public schools. It was simply part of the testimony that was used in an earlier trial, well before the Supreme Court ever made their decision. They included it in their final ruling only to document the history of the case, not as evidence for their final decision.

2) The statement — like much of what Barton says — was taken completely out of context. Grayzel was saying that forced reading of the New Testament could be problematic for Jewish students.

This is from the Supreme Court’s ruling, quoting the earlier trial court:

… Dr. Grayzel testified that portions of the New Testament were offensive to Jewish tradition, and that, from the standpoint of Jewish faith, the concept of Jesus Christ as the Son of God was “practically blasphemous.” He cited instances in the New Testament which, assertedly, were not only sectarian in nature but tended to bring the Jews into ridicule or scorn. Dr. Grayzel gave as his expert opinion that such material from the New Testament could be explained to Jewish children in such a way as to do no harm to them. But if portions of the New Testament were read without explanation, they could be, and, in his specific experience with children, Dr. Grayzel observed, had been, psychologically harmful to the child, and had caused a divisive force within the social media of the school.

If, during grade school, I was forced to listen to another religion’s holy book explaining why I was an awful person destined for hellfire, you can bet it would have a serious effect on me, too. Grayzel wasn’t out of line at all.

The wingnuts do have a precedent for their fears even with the truth about the Marine Corps contract: Marines from Washington Barracks were sent to deal with John Brown’s raid on the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal in 1859. They were on the same side as the wingnuts in that one, though, since Brown’s objective was to arm a slave revolt.

Army Colonel Robert E. Lee was in command of the operation btw.

Pastor Raul Ries: I Was Going to Kill My Family When God Saved Me

California Pastor Raul Ries of Calvary Chapel Golden Springs shared Saturday evening his powerful testimony of inviting Jesus into his heart after watching Pastor Chuck Smith on TV at a time when he was contemplating violence against his family.

Ries said at the National Religious Broadcasters convention that as an unbeliever he hated everything: the world, his life and even his wife and children. But then he “found out that the cross of Jesus Christ is real,” he said.

He challenged today’s Church in his message to talk about the fundamentals of the scriptures and not shy away from the message of sin, although doing so without criticizing the person. “We don’t talk about people, we talk about sin because we hate sin,” Ries told the audience.

Well, thank Jesus for deciding not killing off your family, I guess, you nutball.

Further info on Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder of MO (R). He’s got himself a stripper scandal and had to drop out of the governor’s race last year as a result.

Kinder’s money woes are the latest in a series of political setbacks for the highest ranking Republican in Missouri state government. Kinder was forced to drop a planned campaign for governor late last year after a scandal involving use of tax dollars for hotel stays on political trips, along with his involvement with a stripper, whom he invited to move into a St. Louis condo he rented with campaign funds following the hotel dispute. The stripper, Tammy Chapman, told Riverfront Times last year that Kinder had made romantic advances toward her in the 1990s, when he was a state senator who frequented her strip club. Chapman then said that Kinder appeared in the St. Louis bar where she worked in 2011 and suggested that she move into his condo.

Kinder told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last year that he did not offer the condo to Chapman and noted that he had stopped at the bar to use the bathroom and ended up randomly talking to Chapman, who was the bartender, when he decided to have a glass of wine.

Y’know in some Arab countries & the Persian Gulf area of Iran they catch ‘em, roast ‘em, and eat ‘em like snacks. Not kidding—I knew an Arab-Iranian guy from Ababdan who said his mom & the other women used to go out on the roofs and use their chadors like giant nets to catch the locusts. Plenty of crunchy, salty snacks for everyone! You guys might want to consider that as an option….

His reach-number spikes on Alexa would suggest that, after a Drudge referral, 0.06% of all internet users read his story. About 1.4 million people. And that’s only direct visits; it doesn’t count the word-of-mouth or secondary stories.

Does anyone know how to tell if recent edits have been made to a Wiki page? I’m wondering if someone just added/replaced that URL today???

It was originally added in November, I think. Someone tried to edit in a reference to Hoft’s post.

Here’s a link to the page history. One user tried to flag it as an unacceptable source — Flagged a reference to the U.S. DHS purchasing 2700 MRAPs as needing a better source, as the currently cited source is some random blog that cites some other random blog as its source — but dueling editors have been alternately adding and removing the citation to Hoft and the survivalist blog.

OT, but I’m writing an immigration themed novel, tentatively titled “Homeland” , set in the American Southwest. One of my characters is a Joe Arpaio inspired sheriff. Here’s a snippet in which my faux Arpaio is being interviewed by my reporter protagonist:

Jerry Palmer was the Toughest Sheriff in the Southwest. Or at least that’s what he told anyone who would listen. Palmer had been the Sheriff of Pinal County, Arizona, immediately south of Maricopa County (which Phoenix lay within) for over 25 years.

If there were two words that described him to a tee they were: Old school.

Palmer was a hard driving, tough love kind of a guy that had no problem speaking his mind and laying down the law…or at least his version of the law.

He was also one of the most outspoken anti-immigrant voices in the state of Arizona.

“You can call them Latinos, you can call them Mexicans or you can call them what I do: Damned ‘spics.”

“You’re painting with a pretty broad brush. What exactly did they do to offend you?”

Palmer scoffed. “Where in the heck do I begin? These wetbacks, they sneak into the country, waltz around like they own the place, start up trouble that threatens the safety of good people and take jobs from hard working Americans. I don’t know about you mister but to me that’s pretty offensive.”

Republicans Once Again Try To Ban Same-Sex Weddings On Military Bases

Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) is once again trying to enshrine discrimination into the nation’s military.

His new bill, H.R. 914, the “Military Religious Freedom Protection Act,” contains more redundant protections for military chaplains, ensuring — as is already the case — that they cannot be penalized if their religious beliefs are not pro-gay. What seems evident is that those redundancies are simply a guise for the last little provision in the bill: a ban on same-sex marriages on military bases:

A military installation or other property owned, rented, or otherwise under the jurisdiction or control of the Department of Defense shall not be used to officiate, solemnize, or perform a marriage or marriage-like ceremony involving anything other than the union of one man with one woman.

I’m not that thrilled with the prospect of a Hilary Clinton presidency. I rejected her in 2008 in favor of Barack Obama, and I guess I’m not as nonplussed as I used to be. My beef is that we have the prospect of electing a lot of “legacy” candidates. First, and most disastrously, George W. Bush, son of H, and now we have the prospect of a former first lady squaring off against another legacy candidate.

296 SteveMcGazi  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 5:15:33pm

Just to expound on my previous post, I didn’t have a problem with her vote in favor of the use of military force resolution in Iraq. I was against the war before it started, but I think voting against the resolution would have compromised the ability of the government to conduct policy. The decision to issue the go order rests with the President, and he bears the responsibility. What I didn’t like about her was the mind-set (not exclusive to her but it was a vibe I got from a lot of her supporters) that it was her turn. Then the sexism complaints turned me off again but the real capper was the Bosnian “Snipergate” fiasco. Further, everywhere she went, her numbers went down. By that I mean that whenever there was a protracted primary campaign (for a few weeks) she never gained support in the polls. In general, she would post election results that fell below her poll standing.

Isn’t this just a surplus buy taking advantage of the drawdown? The fact they are mine resistant is irrelevant other than being impervious to some violent weather. MRAPs can be fitted with a turret, but it is a small one that at most can mount a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

By contrast, the smallest tank turret currently produced is for the Russian PT-76 amphibious light to tank. It mounts a semi-auto 57mm high-velocity cannon whose HVAP-DS (Hyper-Velocity Armor-Piercing, Discarding Sabot) round would penetrate the armor of any wheeled APC currently in production.

From September 2012:

Navistar Defense to Upgrade 2,300 MRAPs to Defend Against Evolving Threats

LISLE, Ill., Sept. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Navistar Defense, LLC received a delivery order today for up to $282 million to provide more than 2,300 survivability upgrade retrofit kits for International® MaxxPro® Dash Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. The order from the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command will upgrade MaxxPro Dash vehicles in theater with additional protection in response to evolving threats in Afghanistan. The order also includes parts and service.

(Logo: [Link: photos.prnewswire.com…]

“Anticipating the needs of our Armed Forces continues to be a top priority for Navistar and we are proud to offer the vehicle of choice to help them complete their missions safely,” said Archie Massicotte, president, Navistar Defense. “Threats continue to change and it is our responsibility to stay out ahead of those threats with the best technology available.”

The MaxxPro family of vehicles was originally designed to accommodate rapid vehicle enhancements as threats evolved in theater. Since 2007, the company has provided enhancements to both survivability and mobility through its work on its rolling chassis body swap, DXM™ independent suspension retrofit kits, armor kits and more.

If Navistar was booking a 2,700+ vehicle order, they would surely let people know about it, since it would affect the stock value with hundreds of millions of dollars in business.

DHS would likewise be indicating as much on its budgetary sites and paperwork.

Speaking of excessive levels of derpitude…

Scott Lively: The Bi-Sexual T**d in the Gay Wedding Punchbowl

The next time you’re at a “gay ’ wedding with political, media or other important pro-gay-marriage celebrities, and one of them gets up with a glass of wedding punch to toast Partner A and Partner B for their courage to “be themselves,” here’s a question to shout out (in a feigned drunken slur) from the back: “Hey, Dude, why don’t you support bi-sexual marriage too? Are you some kind of bigot?“

Chances are if you’re reading this article, you’re not the sort of person likely to be found at such an event, but the point is that bi-sexual marriage is the very last thing that any of our opponents want to discuss, and we pro-family conservatives should really be forcing them to do it at every opportunity.

Think about it. A bi-sexual marriage would require an absolute minimum of four people. You’d have same sex partners A and B just like in the “gay marriage,” but you’d also need to have a heterosexual partner for both A and B.

Press TV is an Iranian news organization based in Tehran. Of course they’re shilling for the mullahs, since to do otherwise is probably illegal (or at least severely punishable off the books) in a place like Iran. They’re a propaganda outlet.

What exactly does this have to do with American/Western moonbats?

The person being interviewed is an American Moonbat and Occupy activist. OWS is a constant supply of anti-American Propaganda on Iranian state TV.

I figure to qualify as a tank it needs to at least have tracks and a turret.

Tracks is debatable. And the comparison between light tank and heavy infantry carriers can make the line even fuzzier. (Add for fun the Merkava. It is, according to Israel, a heavy tank. The fact it also transports a half-squad of infantry doesn’t change what they call it.)

Tank is really a role. It’s a vehicle that provides a mobile, armored, heavy punch during assaults. If one side has nothing then a Gustav Recoilless Rifle mounted on a pintle in the back of a Toyota Unibody is a “tank”. (aka Mogadishu Special).

Well, we have had that issue from our founding on and it keeps repeating periodically:

John Adams, John Quincy Adams.

William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison.

Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

JFK and RFK (assassinated before he had chance).

GHW Bush and GW Bush.

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton ran failed 2008 campaign for Democratic nomination.

Now, we’ve got another possible Bush family member run for the Presidency.

The first Republican nominee (1856) was John C Fremont, appointed governor of California when it first became a state but hadn’t yet had elections. He was the son-in-law of Sen. Thomas Benton of Missouri.

He’s missing some things, of course. Such things as the fact the poor do pay taxes. The fact that the poor also spend money and that drives an economy upward. The fact that the increased opportunity for health care is probably going to be a major boon for small startup businesses; not only can they afford insurance, but many individuals who have thought of starting have been stopped in the past by the loss of their company benefits.

The videotaped claims of two women, made with their faces obscured, were posted on the conservative Web site the Daily Caller. The site reported that “the two women said they met Menendez around Easter at Casa de Campo, an expensive 7,000-acre resort in the Dominican Republic. . . . They claimed Menendez agreed to pay them $500 for sex acts, but in the end they each received only $100.”

Cool. Not doing MMOs for a while as they just require too much time commitment. And there’s the fact that the Elder Scrolls intermittently bore me - certainly when I try to play through a second time. (My fault - I”m something of a completionist on my first run and it doesn’t leave a lot to see anew on later runs.)

re: #314 SteveMcGazi

I figure to qualify as a tank it needs to at least have tracks and a turret.

For me it’s main armament, the way that armament is mounted and armour thickness.

MICV (Mobile Infantry Combat Vehicles) like the Bradley and the BMP have turrets and treads but thin armour and a gun meant for engaging infantry and soft skinned/lightly armoured vehicles like themselves.

Mobile artillery has treads and a big gun. But the armour is thin and the gun is mounted for indirect fire.

Mobile AAA like the ZSU-23-4 have a turret and treads but thin armour plus multiple small guns that are mounted for anti-aircraft work.

MBTs like the Abrams and the Leopard II have thick, multi-layer armour (especially on the front), a large turret, a large gun mounted for direct fire and wide treads to get all that weight across country.

My take anyway. MICVs have some anti-tank capability as all carry ATGMs (anti-tank guided missiles) these days. Mobile artillery has munitions like SADARM that can destroy armoured vehicles at a fair distance.

So there’s a lot of overlap.

Steve, I like you dude, but that is some excuse making right there for Hillary’s vote for the war. If Congress had voted down that war, I can’t see Bush going ahead with it. You basically say here Democrats have no share of the blame for putting our soldiers in Iraq despite voting for it. Democrats voters have been beating up on Republicans voters for years for this war yet we didn’t conceive of it or vote for it.

The fetus is a human being inside his or her mother. I don’t think it is an issue of permission.

Are you trying to say the fetus is a parasite? Even if I concede that, it doesn’t mean it’s not human life. A baby outside the womb is still dependent on her parents to survive.

Click on the football by your name.

While you’re at it, go to CSPAN and find Sandra Fluke’s actual testimony before Congress. You’ll find that she never once advocated for her own free birth control. Also, those pills aren’t always “less than ten dollars”,many are far more expensive(just to debunk yet another idiotic point that came up with this whole idiotic mess) and there’s no reason in hell they shouldn’t be covered by insurance like any other medication.

Why can’t she get her boyfriend to pay for the birth control? It was my understanding she was dating some guy who had a lot of money. All she has to do is tell her boyfriend that if they want sex, they got to pay for .the birth control.

I’ve also pointed out that there are Planned Parenthood clinics near Georgetown that they could get birth control at.

Also, “failure to provide the necessities of life” does not extend to one’s own body. If someone has a dependent adult in their care, they’re obligated by law to ensure that person has food, water, etc., but they can’t be forced by law to donate blood, a kidney, or any other part of their body, even if it’s necessary to save that person’s life.

Or are pro-birth anti-choicers in favor of mandatory blood and organ donation now?

454 DrTesla  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 9:22:25pm

Here is some portion of the Fluke testimony with my comments:

“When I look around my campus, I see the faces of the women affected by this lack of contraceptive coverage.” Can Fluke read minds? What does the face of somebody suffering from lack of contraceptive coverage look like? Is it possible they have other things on their mind? I would think it highly probable most law school students are not thinking about bc coverage and costs.

“And especially in the last week, I have heard more and more of their stories. On a daily basis, I hear yet from another woman from Georgetown or from another school or who works for a religiously-affiliated employer, and they tell me that they have suffered financially and emotionally and medically because of this lack of coverage.”
this just isn’t believable given the low costs and accessibility of birth control.

“Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that’s practically an entire summer’s salary. 40% of the female students at Georgetown Law reported to us that they struggle financially as a result of this policy.”
40% of female students at Gtown law struggle financially b/c of the cost of birth control which isn’t expensive? C’mon man.

“One told us about how embarrassed and just powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter and learned for the first time that contraception was not covered on her insurance and she had to turn and walk away because she couldn’t afford that prescription. Women like her have no choice but to go without contraception.”
So did this woman stop having sex, or is she having sex without using birth control and risking pregnancy? I assume the latter b/c Fluke doesn’t seem to think not having sex if you can’t afford birth control is an possibility.

“Just last week, a married female student told me that she had to stop using contraception because she and her husband just couldn’t fit it into their budget anymore. Women employed in low-wage jobs without contraceptive coverage face the same choice.”
So are to assume this married couple is still having sex and risking pregnancy, or abstaining from sex, due to the high cost of contraception? She doesn’t make it clear.

“And some might respond that contraception is accessible in lots of other ways. Unfortunately, that’s just not true.”
She’s flat out wrong about this.

“A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and she has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown’s insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy.”
As I uncovered earlier, birth control isn’t prescribed to treat this ovary cyst thing. She also admits here that Georgetown DOES cover it but only for medical reasons so it is even more disengenous for her to bring it up in the context of birth control. I think most Fluke fans have argued that Georgetown doesn’t cover contraceptives for non-birth control purposes, and that appears to be false.

birth control is accessible and it is cheap so your attempt to call me a hypocrite is absurd. also, I’m not against insurance plans covering birth control. but again she went to a private religious school and she knew what their policy was going to be on birth control. she no doubt was required to read and sign that she understood the policy prior to enrolling in the law school.

Very simple…if healthcare plans pay for Rx drugs, there’s no legitimate medical reason to leave bc pills off the menu. These are prescription meds used by millions for both contraceptive and other reasons.

The fixation on denying it (especially since it’s cheap) reeks of Church Lady condescension.

Why are you lying again?

In sixty-five percent of cases, our female students were interrogated by insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they needed these prescriptions and whether they were lying about their symptoms. For my friend, and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor. Her claim was denied repeatedly on the assumption that she really wanted the birth control to prevent pregnancy. She’s gay, so clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy. After months of paying over $100 out of pocket, she just couldn’t afford her medication anymore and had to stop taking it.

Look, I know you’re just here to troll, but let me explain simply.

1. “Technically” the policy is supposed to BC for non-contraceptive cases.
2. However, in the majority (65%) of such cases, the insurance company and university staff assume the doctor is lying and press the patient for further information.
3. And in 20% of those cases, the women get shot down repeatedly and told their insurance won’t cover their medically necessary, doctor-prescribed BC for non-contraceptive needs.
4. This is what happened to Fluke’s friend. She wasn’t covered by the policy she was paying for.
5. Not all BC is the same, and not all BC is effective at mitigating the effects of the cysts. Saying “she could just go pick some up from PP” doesn’t work. Medicine is expensive these days, and an extra $100 a month does add up, especially if you’re trying to get through school.

To get up there and start talking about her friend’s ovarian cyst is sophomoric and talking about the faces of women suffering from lack of contraception coverage almost seems like an elementary school kid type of argument.

For you to call her ‘callow’ after the vile spew Limbaugh aimed at her allows me to type-classify you: You’re “Me-Too”.

Big Dog and Me-Too

Big Dog is a bully who doesn’t hesitate to use his superior strength to intimidate other combatants. Big Dog may be smart, articulate or just plain mean, but in any case he is a remorseless fighter, brutally ripping into even the weakest of combatants. Once Big Dog securely fastens his powerful jaws on a hapless victim, Me-Too will join the attack. Me-Too is far too weak and insecure to engage in single combat, and must ally himself with Big Dog or a pack of other Warriors to bring down his quarry.

509 klys  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 10:23:37pm

Personal story for why this sort of thing matters to me:

I’ve been on BC of one form or another since relatively soon after I started menstruating, because the cramps that associated that time of the month were so bad that I missing school - and that as a relatively dedicated student. I obviously have no direct comparison, but I could imagine it as being somewhat similar to the aftereffects of being kicked in the balls - not the initial burst of pain but the lingering aftermath. Except for 2-3 days. Birth control brings it down to the level where I could take two ibuprofen every few hours or so and continue on my way. Without it, well, let’s just say that even prescription strength painkillers don’t work well.

Because of a variety of circumstances I’ve had to go off of it for a while here and there and found that nope, still need it. And so I’ve always been very aware of my access to contraceptives, because this makes a very big difference in my day to day life on a regular basis. This isn’t about some pharmacist or religious organization’s belief, this is about my ability to function as a human being for the entire month.

But these days it’s also for birth control. I’m married. We don’t want children. We especially don’t want children now. I don’t want to ever be in a decision where I have to decide on an abortion, so I’m trying to avoid it to the best of my ability, but I don’t think it’s fair to tell my husband (or me) that we can’t have sex until I’ve gone through menopause. That’s quite a ways away.

If push came to shove these days, we could probably afford birth control without insurance. We live in an area with a reasonable number of pharmacies, so finding a pharmacist without an issue filling the prescription would be less problematic. But I can so easily look at the woman stuck in rural Montana, for example, where the one pharmacist refuses to fill the prescription on religious grounds, and see that that could be me. The woman going to school as a graduate or law student whose budget can’t afford the cost for the birth control that she knows works for her symptoms - because different kinds of birth control work differently, I can tell you from experience. It’s not always as simple as buy the cheapest option. Those women could be me. And I don’t understand why someone should be able to say that a benefit I contribute to - that I help pay for - shouldn’t cover a prescription that my doctor wrote for me, in my situation, based on my information. Why should this be subject to insurance company whims? How would you classify my situation - medical necessity or just me wanting to have sex? I know how I would classify it, but I can’t trust an insurance representative to rule the same way and I should not have to.

If Viagra can be approved without having to jump through medical hoops as a necessity or medical issue - which is the case on most health insurance plans offered by religious institutions - I want nothing less than the same treatment for birth control. Period.

but I’ve also pointed out that contraceptives are not used to treat the kind of ovarian cyst that she is talking about. This is according to some medical professional on the website. So if we choose to believe that Fluke is telling the truth about her friend, which I think is a dicey proposition, the reason why she isn’t getting coverage is b/c the insurance company has determined that the birth control isnt’ the standard treatment for the ovarian cyst thing.

I doubt he will either, but I know that it’s only really by putting personal faces on some of these issues that people start to learn why it matters, and this is something I feel passionately about. I never used it for birth control purposes before my husband, but if we choose to use it for birth control, so what? If I’d needed it for birth control before him, so what? This is about my quality of life.

I don’t think someone else’s religious beliefs should define that. They don’t for blood transfusions. I don’t see what makes my uterus different.

Hey, genius.

It’s from the paragraph directly after the sentence you quoted, you know, where she first mentions her friend with ovarian cysts. There are literally only 4 sentences between the “technically covered” sentence that you quoted, and the one that I’ve quoted.

In fact, the sentence directly after the one you quoted explains the thing that has you so puzzled as to why she mentioned it.

519 DrTesla  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 10:35:28pm

Fluke says this:
“A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and she has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown’s insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy.”

She then gets off onto some other points, and then she says this:

For my friend, and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor.

I think it is confusing how she didn’t keep the two thoughts coupled. The first statement gave me the impression her friend did get covered for the cyst.

But again, it’s not true that physicians prescribe birth control for this ovarian cyst condition. I think an insurance company can refuse to cover something if it’s not a standard treatment, even if the physician prescribes it. She does not seem to acknowledge this, but simply suggests the insurance coverage denied it b/c they thought her friend just wanted it for birth control, not medical reasons. SHe is either being dishonest here on purpose or she’s misinformed, and either one is bad if she’s talking to members of Congress about this. She needs to understand what she is talking about or she’s wasting everybody’s time.

They’re the same point, genius.

A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome
and has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy. Under many religious institutions’ insurance plans, it wouldn’t be, and under Senator Blunt’s amendment, Senator Rubio’s bill, or Representative Fortenberry’s bill, there’s no requirement that an exception be made for such medical needs. When they do exist, these exceptions don’t accomplish their well-intended goals because when you let university administrators or other employers, rather than women and their doctors, dictate whose medical needs are legitimate and whose aren’t, a woman’s health takes a
back seat to a bureaucracy focused on policing her body.

In sixty-five percent of cases, our female students were interrogated by insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they needed these prescriptions and whether they were lying about their symptoms. For my friend, and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor

Here is what I’m reading:

“A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and she has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown’s insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy.

“Unfortunately, under many religious institutions and insurance plans, it wouldn’t be. There would be no exception for other medical needs. And under Sen. Blunt’s amendment, Sen. Rubio’s bill or Rep. Fortenberry’s bill there’s no requirement that such an exception be made for these medical needs.

“In 65% of the cases at our school, our female students were interrogated by insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they needed prescription and whether they were lying about their symptoms.

“ She’s gay. So clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy for her.

I think that is a big gap b/t introducing us to her friend, informing us the cyst is technically covered, and then informing us her friend was denied coverage. I would think a lawyer would lay out her presentation much better than this.

re: #519 DrTesla

But again, it’s not true that physicians prescribe birth control for this ovarian cyst condition.

WebMD:

As part of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment, medicines can be used to help control reproductive hormone or insulin levels.

Medication Choices
Medicines to treat reproductive or metabolic problems of PCOS include:

* Combination estrogen and progestin hormones in birth control pills, vaginal rings, or skin patches. These hormones correct irregular menstrual bleeding or absent menstrual cycles. They may also improve your androgen-related acne problems, male-type hair growth, and male-pattern hair loss. The progestin makes your endometrial lining build up and shed, similar to a menstrual period. This monthly shedding is what prevents uterine precancer and uterine cancer.

Mayo Clinic:

Polycystic ovary syndrome treatment generally focuses on management of your individual main concerns, such as infertility, hirsutism, acne or obesity.

Medications
Your doctor may prescribe a medication to:

* Regulate your menstrual cycle. If you’re not trying to become pregnant, your doctor may recommend low-dose birth control pills that contain a combination of synthetic estrogen and progesterone. They decrease androgen production and give your body a break from the effects of continuous estrogen. This decreases your risk of endometrial cancer and corrects abnormal bleeding.

Womenshealth.gov:

How is PCOS treated?

Because there is no cure for PCOS, it needs to be managed to prevent problems. Treatment goals are based on your symptoms, whether or not you want to become pregnant, and lowering your chances of getting heart disease and diabetes. Many women will need a combination of treatments to meet these goals. Some treatments for PCOS include:

Birth control pills. For women who don’t want to get pregnant, birth control pills can:

* Control menstrual cycles
* Reduce male hormone levels
* Help to clear acne
Keep in mind that the menstrual cycle will become abnormal again if the pill is stopped. Women may also think about taking a pill that only has progesterone (proh-JES-tuh-rohn), like Provera, to control the menstrual cycle and reduce the risk of endometrial cancer (See Does PCOS put women at risk for other health problems?). But, progesterone alone does not help reduce acne and hair growth.

You are wrong when you say that physicians do not prescribe birth control for PCOS. You are lying again.

531 DrTesla  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 10:48:32pm

no, Fluke introduces us to her friend with the ovarian cyst, then she gets off onto Marco Rubio and plans that won’t even “technically” cover birth control for medical reasons, and then she comes back around to her friend and finally tells us her friend was denied. I think it is confusing the way she laid it out. i never claimed insurance companies always get it right, but people who complain about insurance companies aren’t always right either. I’d like to hear the insurance companies side of this and actually see what the policy is…too much of this is Fluke presenting herself as the truth but there is no way to know if she is mispresenting it or misinformed and we don’t get to hear the other side.

For all of you guys complaining about this Georgetown health insurance plan, why do you want to force everybody into a government run plan. Do you see why it is good to have options in that regard? LOL

i guess it would depend on what you need birth control for? i’d classify you as either eligble or not eligble. maybe I don’t get what you are getting at.

I wonder how prevalaent something like an ovarian cyst is anyway, it’s hard to imagine most young women in law school are ever going to be afflicted by this. it just seems like Fluke went looking for some kind of rare exception to make her core argument against the GTown policy.

I kind of spelled it out in the post that I linked there, but here’s a link again:

re: #509 klys

So. You’re the insurance rep. You’re presented with someone who is on birth control for managing painful cramps (and this is a hell of a lot more common than you think) but also wants to use it for birth control. The policy denies it for birth control purposes but allows it for medical purposes. Which wins?

I would tell you to go out and talk to women but that’s probably a lost cause. Most women aren’t going to admit something like that to you because it is generally something we talk about with friends. Your attitude is not one that is welcoming towards admitting that sort of thing.

i think obviously the medical one would win, especially if you had a prescription from the doctor and were diagnosed with cramps, right? that seems like how it works.

Go away and shut the fuck up.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (or PCOS) is common, affecting as many as 1 out of 15 women. Often the symptoms begin in the teen years. Treatment can help control the symptoms and prevent long-term problems.

557 DrTesla  Mon, Mar 4, 2013 11:25:27pm

why didn’t Fluke make the BC for menstrual cramps her argument rather than the ovarian cyst thing, as painful cramps is lot more common problem I would imagine.

I’m glad this is funny to you. It’s not funny to me. It’s my ability to function on a day to day basis.

For the record, I have ovarian cysts. Is it PCOS? Not sure. That’s a different set of symptoms that I haven’t been fully diagnosed with (and you better believe the gynecologist was pissed that the surgeon didn’t do more testing when I had my appendectomy, because it would have answered some questions).

But why do my reasons have to matter? You say you’re against abortion. My husband and I don’t want kids. I’m sure if you decided you didn’t want children, you would prefer an alternative to either no sex or risking requiring an abortion.

This is on WebMD:
Regular exercise, a healthy diet, not smoking, and weight control are all important parts of treatment for PCOS. Sometimes, also using a medicine to balance hormones is helpful.

There is no cure for PCOS.

So maybe the insurance plan denied Fluke’s friend coverage b/c they don’t view birth control as a treatment b/c there is no cure. Maybe that’s too rigid, maybe it isn’t, but there does seem to be a medical basis for it, and insurance companies do look at this kind of thing.

Like the part where you didn’t read that I said different forms of birth control work differently for different women? I can only offer my own experience but some forms have been much more effective at dealing with the cramps than others. On the flipside, some of them are less reliable as birth control than others (when I consider my record on taking them properly).

You know, I’m going to postulate that just maybe, I am a little more informed on the availability of birth control than you are. And just maybe I have a slightly better idea on how difficult it can be for women to get approval for this sort of shit from their doctors compared to guys (why don’t you, for a laugh, look up how easy it is for an unmarried guy with no kids to get a vasectomy versus an unmarried woman with no kids).

Since, you know, this is something that directly impacts my life.

And yet the GOP thought that it was ok to ask only men to testify at a hearing regarding the availability of birth control.

Not a talking point. Polls show that nearly half of Republicans doubt Obama’s citizenship. That has nothing to do with him getting elected since: a) most registered Republicans wouldn’t vote for him anyway; and b) the vast majority of Democrats and independents don’t believe the birther garbage. As for Trump, so what if he gave money to a Democrat at some point? He was the loudest, most famous Republican on the birther train; and yes, he’s a member of the party and considered a presidential run as a Republican. He ranted about birth certificates for months, and still isn’t completely satisfied that Obama is an American citizen.

Bush being AWOL for a few weeks is just saying “he’s a bad guy, even a liar.” Obama not being born in America makes him ineligible to be president, fulfilling the birther dream of removing him from office.

It doesn’t really matter what YOU classify Trump as. He’s a Republican. He endorsed Romney, regularly endorses other Republicans, and considered running in 2012 as a Republican. That pretty much settles it.

Most elected Republicans have shied away from birtherism, at least at the national level. But when half of the opposing party’s members think the president is lying about his birthplace, then Dems will use it to make the GOP look bad. Poli Sci 101.

i mean, Obama has won re-election but liberals are still talking about the birthers 24-7. obviously the birthers aren’t a threat to Obama remaining president at this point, unless you think they may be on to something.

If that’s what you think, you’re not paying attention to much of the current focus in the media. It’s certainly not 24/7 birtherism. It’s 24/7 sequester and govt shutdown.

Yeah, you have such great rhetorical skills.

For my friend, and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor.

608 DrTesla  Tue, Mar 5, 2013 12:56:08am

i crack up at some of these liberals who just say “wingnut” in a sentence over and over and over. doesn’t that get old? I debate issues. this bitchy gus guy is why a lot of people think liberals are pussies. dude is so uptight and he’s not even talking about anything in an intelligent way. even if i was liberal i’d think this guy is a tool. it’s late at night and few people are even on here so who the hell cares. get a real problem like cancer and then come cry to me.

re: #596 DrTesla

eh, i probably will get banned. guys like you got your torch and rope. can’t even tolerate one token conservative on here but then you libs say we have epistemic closure or whatever the hell the expression is.

I am a conservative here and have absorbed many down dings (especially lately) but I do try not to make a nuisance of myself. I’m sure some will say my very presence is a nuisance but I do try to state my case succinctly, accept my down dings and, and then move on. It would behoove you to do the same.

Bullshit, you didn’t even know Romney’s dad was born in a foreign country. You couldn’t debate rings around a kitchen table. Your arguments are ill informed, ignorant of important facts, and largely based on personal impressions rather than data.

We don’t call all conservatives stupid, we call conservatives like you stupid.

And you can type the word fuck here. You won’t get banned for that.

Man, you’re pretty damned cocksure, aren’t you? It must be terrible walking through doorways, trying to get that giant head of yours through.

You haven’t been “debating” jack shit; your fact-free spewings have tended to be nothing more than collections of just about every RWNJ talking point out there.

Besides, I still think that you have a distinctly sockpuppet-y scent about you.

I just want to debate stuff with the liberals on here who can do that. i’m not afraid of liberal opinions , i’m interested in what liberals think. it’s cool if you disagree with me but I’m am in no way a “nut” or “crazy”. Generally, I disagree with the way you are conducting yourself. I am weird also, but I try to back off if I get to “weird”. I disagree with some of the things you say but I am more concerned with you presentation.

It’s not like you’re telling people to fuck off or anything. But many of your posts are along the lines of: “It’s funny how you libs…” or “It’s funny how LGF used to be x and now it’s y…” [not direct quotes, i’m paraphrasing]

Do you really think communicating with people that way will make them think, “Yes, this person seems sincere and I’d like to converse seriously with him/her”?

There’s a serious theme to the wingnut repetition: that the GOP’s far right faction threatens the health of the party that most of us used to like, or at least respect.

You are not a conservative. You are obstinately dense, lying sack of rocks who refuses to admit that you might just be wrong. You have found the dead horse that was Sandra Fluke’s Congressional testimony (it was not a legal argument in court, brainiac) and flogged it to death with a baseball bat.

By the way, how come on some comments you actually follow normal rules of capitalization and punctuation, and others it’s all lower case? Might you be two people?

also, the vast majority of insurance plans probably cover birth control. this is only an issue at schools like Georgetown that are private religious schools, and there are plenty of non-religious schools you can attend if this is a big issue for you. i don’t see what the problem is.

I had Hodgkins’ lymphoma 5 years ago. that’s a real problem. this isn’t.

I’m sorry you had to go through that, but still, If I could downding you more than once, I would for this. Just because one condition is bad, doesn’t make it acceptable to deny access to doctor prescribed medication to treat another.

634 Interesting Times  Tue, Mar 5, 2013 6:00:06am

Speaking of cysts, it’s obvious the manic troll has spent too much time kissing the one on limbaugh’s butt.

As for the “Socratic method”, that comes in handy at first - no matter how stupid and dishonest rightwing talking points are, it helps to have intelligent, factual arguments to shoot them down. But when the gibbering rightwing trolls simply repeat the same lies over and over, gish-gallop style, it’s time to bring the banhammer down IMO. Linking to reputable sources and debunking lies always takes more time and effort than simply copypasting the same lie over and over, so when it comes to the ability to frustrate and inconvenience others, trolls “win” because their method is easier - same way a natural loudmouth can drown out everyone else by yelling the same thing over and over.

Now watch the gibbering misogynist troll go back to the stalker blog from whence he came and brag about this “victory”. Somewhat like the drunken idiot who got tossed out of a bar bragging about how those bouncers just couldn’t handle his genius 9_9
