Fake Story About DHS “Tanks” Still Spreading Through Right Wing Talk Radio

The world’s largest closed loop echo chamber
Wingnuts • Views: 35,242

I know it’s not a big surprise, but so far I have not found a single right wing blogger who has corrected the utterly false story about DHS “tanks” launched by Dim Jim Hoft and Drudge Report, even though we proved yesterday that it’s a complete fantasy concocted by a survivalist blog.

Jim Hoft’s semi-literate post hyping this paranoid fake story is still at his blog, with no changes, retractions, or corrections, of course: Obama DHS Purchases 2,700 Light-Armored Tanks to Go With Their 1.6 Billion Bullet Stockpile | the Gateway Pundit.

And as you can see in this Twitter search, there are still thousands of right wing parrots eagerly promoting the phony story, too, after hate-ranter Michael Savage gave it another big push on his radio show.

It’s yet another gigantic fake outrage promoted by evil, dishonest people, that will now become a matter of blind faith among the right wing base, impervious to facts or reason.

It would be irresponsible not to jump to wildly inaccurate conclusions which are easily debunked by looking at the actual evidence at hand.

Ever assuming there was a grain of truth to this, what do they expect to do about it? How many of these keyboard kommandos pooh-poohed fears expressed during the Bush years that creating DHS and putting so much power in the executive branch might lead to such a situation? How many of them cheered on the Patriot Act and other measures that would protect them from the terrorists under their beds?

I guess what I’m saying is you reap what you sow.

It fits the narrative that the shortage of ammunition is not the result of NRA scaremongering but rather government stockpiling…and, even better, it will drive demand up even further.

DHS “Tanks”

why use do you think the government would have any need for tanks when you already let them read your email and listen to your phonecalls without a warrant, wingnut?

if any 21st century fascist government wanted to get you, the first thing you’d know about it would be when your credit cards stopped working and you found yourself accused of a serious crime you had never heard of before

And a repost:

A little tidbit from the weirdos at Business Insider:

Update: An earlier version of this post included a figure of over 2,700 vehicles, as cited from the original RT link. This figure likely comes from a press release from Navistar Defense, mentioning delivery of 2,717 to the U.S. Marine Corps. A DHS Spokesman confirmed with Business Insider that they have only 16 nationwide.

Notice how useless, and Kremlin owned, Russia Today got dibs on the stupidity as well.

Yes, DHS has MRAPs which is used by ICE. According to this yet to be verified number from someone at BID they have 16 MRAPs. The 2,717 has been shown to be for the USMC time and time again. Yet the conspiracy crazy anti-government nuts refuse to acknowledge this. Of course, had it been a Republican president the RWNJs would be applauding the idea of 2,717 “tanks” for the DHS just as the applauded everything that GWB did.

These are people who openly talk about how only their tribe deserves franchise and citizenship, and how everybody else is somehow a counterfeit American or undeserving. The same applies for application of force and due process: when they imagine that it’s their liberties being infringed, suddenly it’s tyranny.

It’s always been about the doublethink of them being authoritarian but also “freedom-loving.”

20 lawhawk  Tue, Mar 5, 2013 11:53:24am

The kernels of fact:

2,717 MRAPs were being contracted for upgrades (by the US Marine Corps via a Navy contract).
DHS operates MRAPs. 16 of them that are primarily for border control operations.

The wildly nutty Hoft goes Derpilicious over a conspiracy/survivalist posting claiming that DHS is buying 2,717 super secret tanks.

MRAPs aren’t tanks. They’re mine resistant armored personnel carriers, and they gained a reputation for being more survivable than the Humvees that the military was using in Iraq and Afghanistan for troop transport. The design of the MRAP deflects IED blasts away from the passenger compartment.

But that doesn’t stop the nutters from claiming that DHS is getting them, along with the billion bullets (which they also ignore have to purchase in bulk to keep the borders safe and to protect the friendly skies as part of both the ICE and TSA). Between training, maintaining qualifications, and daily operating requirements, the number isn’t exactly overwhelming.

And the bulk purchasers are a cost-savings measure to get discounted ammo, rather than buying individual requirements that would end up costing the government more over the long term.

The government can’t win for trying here - these supposed cost-cutting and fiscally prudent right wing nut jobs ignore the benefit of a bulk purchase on ammo and instead claim conspiracy, which overlays with the MRAP nonsense.

From Raw Story…

As Media Matters noted on Tuesday, Dobbs seemed to be repeating allegations made on the conservative Gateway Pundit blog and Alex Jones’ Infowars website, that “Obama DHS Purchases 2,700 Light-Armored Tanks to Go With Their 1.6 Billion Bullet Stockpile.” Jones has also pushed a similar conspiracy theory on his radio show.

A statement from the Defense Department has clarified that the light armored vehicles had been purchased for the U.S. Marine Corp. And an Associated Press report has explained that the Department of Homeland Security made a cost-saving bulk purchase of ammunition to share with “more than 90 federal agencies.”

Derp.

It should be noted that Media Matters (which posted their page at 11:44 PM EST) got this from Charles and me. I Tweeted the LGF pages and the DOD contract award to both MMFA and Eric Boehlert. MMFA does link to and mentions Charles/LGF.

Zimmerman Stuns Court, Waives Right to ‘Stand Your Ground’ Hearing in Trayvon Martin Case

George Zimmerman’s attorneys stunned court observers Tuesday when they waived their client’s right to a “Stand Your Ground” hearing slated for April that might have led to a dismissal of the charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin a year ago.

However, the defense lawyers didn’t say whether they would waive the immunity hearing outright. They left open the possibility for that hearing to be rolled into Zimmerman’s second degree murder trial. Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain in his Florida subdivision, shot and killed the teen, who was visiting a house in the area.

Freedom of speech, what a puny concept!

We came to this country, not for freedom of speech, but freedom of religion!

What we wanted in our independence was the freedom to worship God without interference from the government

We are very blessed to live in a country that still, even in the midst of all ungodliness, considers itself “ONE NATION UNDER GOD”

We have freedom today, not because of war, not because of a “Declaration of Independence”

But because we serve a God that has shed His grace on us as a nation

1) the tea party wins massive and manages to end ALL social programs

It will be HIS fault when he says “making old people and children starve and die without medicine is a bad thing”
3) they get to lock and load and shoot all the black people and immigrants. But of course in the middle of saying “lock and load” and “stock up on bullets” they are sure to say “don’t shoot first” a few times, just to make it clear that nothing is ever their fault.

During his Monday Focal Point radio broadcast, Bryan Fischer insisted that liberals were modern “Pharisees,” a Jewish sect which was depicted as self-righteous and hypocritical in the New Testament of the Bible.

“You know who the American Taliban is?” he asked his listeners. “It’s secular fundamentalists because they are the one that want to remove all mention of Jesus from the public square… and they’re the Taliban. The Taliban wants to do the same thing. Taliban wants to drive Christ and any mention of Christ and drive Christians from the public square.”

“So, who is the Taliban today, who are the Pharisees today? Freedom From Religion Foundation, ACLU and secular fundamentalists all across the fruited plain.”

I tried yesterday with some anarchist. She or he freaked out and sent my 9 Tweets within 15 minutes. Didn’t work. His/her last Tweet to me was this:

I laughed.

How does God “shed his grace”? Is he like, a dog or something?

If a simple majority can override a veto, what the fuck is the point of a veto?

The strongly-worded letter of Arkansas politics?

They kinda sorta know what separation of powers is?

I thought the Taliban were religious fanatics, how the hell can atheists be religious fanatics.

It makes sense if your worldview assumes that being non-Christian isn’t the product of genuine belief or of social moulding, but solely the product of a hatred of Jesus.

Not sarcastic.

Just reading this morning that Christie isn’t alone, that Bob McDonnell also found his CPAC invitation wasn’t in the mail.

Keep in mind these are the same people who speak lovingly about being “washed in the blood of Jesus” and eating his flesh, and other things that sound like death metal lyrics.

For those on the fringe, they never stopped buying into it. They’ve just exported their crazy to a wider selection of extremists on the right.

The rightwing agreed with Tim McVeigh 100% but were too wussy to admit it in mixed company - but amongst themselves they either think:

A) Clinton framed the “Patriot” movement by enacting the Patriot movement’s own scenario on America to make America hate the Patriot movement (I know - even the Patriot militias know their ideology would make Americans hate them)

or

B) McVeigh was a hero who did what had to be done.

That is the base of the Republican party, today.

I’m reminded of Erick’s editorial the other day calling on the right to stop jumping onto every conspiracy theory that comes their way. Or Frum actually beginning to express doubt as to the GOP’s tactics. These folks have encouraged and cheered on this shit for years, but now are stunned when the very monster they created is not their means to greatness and is no longer listening to their commands.

Speaking of actual tanks - I was *not* hallucinating the other day when I was driving on US-130 to visit friends in New Jersey.

An Army-Navy store along that highway has a static display British Chieftain tank out front. I found some internet pictures of it.

Because they both hate Baby Jesus obviously.

Funny thing is Muslims DON’T hate baby Jesus. They speak very highly of him and his mother Mary.
