New SPLC Report on Hate and Extremism

The Year in Hate and Extremism - By Mark Potok
US News • Views: 30,958

Capping four years of explosive growth sparked by the election of America’s first black president and anger over the economy, the number of conspiracy-minded antigovernment “Patriot” groups reached an all-time high of 1,360 in 2012, while the number of hard-core hate groups remained above 1,000. As President Obama enters his second term with an agenda of gun control and immigration reform, the rage on the right is likely to intensify.

The furious reaction to the Obama administration’s gun control proposals is reminiscent of the anger that greeted the passage of the 1993 Brady Bill and the 1994 ban on assault weapons supported by another relatively liberal Democrat — Bill Clinton. The passage of those bills, along with what was seen by the right as the federal government’s violent suppression of political dissidents at Waco, Texas, and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in the early 1990s, led to the first wave of the Patriot movement that burst into public consciousness with the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The number of Patriot groups in that era peaked in 1996 at 858, more than 500 groups fewer than the number active in 2012.

For many, the election of America’s first black president symbolizes the country’s changing demographics, with the loss of its white majority predicted by 2043. (In 2011, for the first time, non-white births outnumbered the births of white children.) But the backlash to that trend predates Obama’s presidency by many years. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of hate groups rose from 602 to more than 1,000, where the count remains today. Now that comprehensive immigration reform is poised to legitimize and potentially accelerate the country’s demographic change, the backlash to that change may accelerate as well.

While the number of hate groups remained essentially unchanged last year — going from 1,018 in 2011 to 1,007 in 2012 — the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) count of 1,360 Patriot groups in 2012 was up about 7% from the 1,274 active in 2011. And that was only the latest growth spurt in the Patriot movement, which generally believes that the federal government is conspiring to take Americans’ guns and destroy their liberties as it paves the way for a global “one-world government.” From a mere 149 organizations in 2008, the number of Patriot groups shot up to 512 in 2009, jumped again to 824 in 2010, and then skyrocketed to 1,274 in 2011 before hitting their all-time high last year.

Now, in the wake of the mass murder of 26 children and adults at a Connecticut school and the Obama-led gun control efforts that followed, it seems likely that that growth will pick up speed once again.

Yes, these are reel “patriots,” hellbent on destroying our nation’s government mainly because they don’t think a certain duly-elected president should be in the WH. Sad.

But remember, that Justice Dept study claiming that right wing terror groups were the next big threat was inherently flawed.

Its scary how unbalanced by hate these people are. The freakin NRA debunked the story that the Administration is stockpiling ammo to massacre Americans, and wingnuts are still repeating it and believing it. Now the latest which I wouldn’t be surprised to see explode across the wingnut-o-sphere is a John Birch Society story that the government is purchasing targets in the shape of the elderly and pregnant women in order to practice murdering innocent Americans.

And was just the Justice Dept showing how it was controlled by the Obama Cabal, because it didn’t include a report on left wing terror groups.

They want the fantasy of a malevolent government they stand against as “brave patriots”. But its really just a fantasy, since if they ever were the subject of hostile law enforcement attention half of these yahoos would likely crap their pants.

Exactly. My concern is the small number of mentally unbalanced people who will act on these fantasies with tragic consequences.

So there’s a huge snowstorm set to roll through D.C. tomorrow and hopefully be gone by Thursday. House GOP leadership initially intended the vote on their own Continuing Resolution to be held Thursday, on what was expected to be the period after the worst of the storm. Now, they’ve cranked it back to tomorrow, when the storm’s supposed to be at its worst, citing “concerns” about getting into the Capital Building in the aftermath of such a storm.

Dem aides are already calling bullshit, stating that it’s more like that the GOP leadership is afraid that the longer they hold off on a vote, the more votes will be lost to an organized effort to oppose the bill or to offer amendments that could cost votes, as well as keep the Democrats from effectively whipping their own members to keep them from voting in favor. Freedomworks, which is already campaigning hard against the bill, smells the same rat.

Bill O’Reilly screams at Alan Colmes for pointing out Obama’s sequester plan

Colmes noted the President offered $2 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases, but O’Reilly insisted that wasn’t “specific.” O’Reilly challenged Colmes to provide “one damn program” Obama said he would cut.

When Colmes said Obama offered to cut entitlement programs, O’Reilly said it was “bullshit” and that he was lying. O’Reilly later claimed Medicare and Medicaid were not “specific” programs.

After Colmes got more specific, explaining that Obama’s plan would reduce reimbursements to hospitals, O’Reilly said it was just “bull-blank.”

Just when you think, even momentarily, that O’Reilly is less of a douchebag charlatan propagandist than the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh, et al., he does something like this.

Don’t be fooled—Billo is a RWNJ as well. He just sometimes shows a little respect for Obama that the others don’t. Otherwise, he parrots the rest of the modern American right’s ideology, lacking in intellectual consistency as it may be.

It’s not a coincidence that their fantasy of malevolent government confabulates actual government institutions and normal people that they don’t agree with. Or that the actual content of their fantasies involves beating/gunning down “minority urban youth” as often as it does shooting cops. The real fantasy is retaliating against anyone that disagrees with them while having some dim facade of noble justification.

Which, unfortunately, is also why I feel like I don’t have the luxury of treating them as just keyboard jockeys that are just talking big. Their idea of hitting back at The Man includes uppity women, brown folks, gays, and other people who are amongst the low-hanging fruit of authoritarian violence targets.

It is personal with Bill. He is pissed because he is now going to have to pay a little more in taxes..back to the Clinton era rates on his multi million dollar salary.
Didnt he say something like if the tax increases went into effect, he wouldn’t be able to do his job anymore?
right…poor wittle billo. He is a creep, and he should be forced to apologize to Colmes.

Feh. Clinton era? We should go back to the tax rates in effect on 1 January 1980.

Of course just like my other pet idea - remove all income caps on SS withholding (make 10 million? Pay on all that 10 million.) - it’s going to get passed on the proverbial cold day downstairs…

There was whining Monday about how the top 20% are paying “the highest tax rates since 1979.” Note the “since,” as in these fuckers aren’t paying anywhere near what they did before Ronaldus Magnus entered office, but we’re supposed to pity them their “burden.”

I really dislike O’Reilly. Here’s a story…

A few years ago, we took my wife’s grandmother out for a birthday dinner to a pretty posh restaurant in Garden City, LI. We all sat down at a table by the wall, and I sat facing the wall next to my wife.

My wife’s uncle leaned over to me and said, ‘That guy behind you looks familiar. Is he on TV or something?’ I sneaked a look - BillO, in the flesh.

For the entire time we were there, he made a grand show of calling the help over and loudly asking for more wine, more bread, a fresh pitcher of water. The impression that I got was a loud-mouthed douche-canoe who really enjoyed bossing people around. My wife leaned over and told me she wanted to walk over and ‘accidently’ spill her wine on him for being a dick. I talked her out of it.

We finished our meal, and as we were walking out, I went by his table and made a face like I ‘recognized’ him, and he saw it. You could see him start to puff up, thinking he was about to be fawned over by a fan.

At that point, my face went blank and I walked past his table without saying a word. That really seemed to bother him - he actually looked visibly upset. I think not getting accolades from a guy in a restaurant probably bothered him more than if my wife had spilled her drink on him.

He’s a dick.

Apparently the latest whine on the GOP front has to do with the White House announcing that, due to staff cuts brought about by the sequester, White House tours are cancelled indefinitely. The cuts are meant to allow the Secret Service to reassign those normally meant to provide security during the tours to other postings, allowing them to save money on overtime and avoid furloughs.

But Republicans, who now are gonna have to go through the trouble of calling constituents and informing them that their tour has been cancelled, are pissed and are pushing for an amendment to their own Continuing Resolution that would require Obama to give up golf until the tours are started up again.

Very windy and drizzling in Philadelphia right now. Probably won’t snow unless the temperature drops another 8-9 degrees.

Not to be a downer or anything, but does anyone know the procedure for what to do if you think one of your neighbors may have died?

My building has a lot of really ancient people in it. One guy, down on the 3rd floor, has been looking worse and worse over the last couple of weeks. Hard to really tell, since he avoids talking to me or anyone else, but I run into him a lot on the stairs since it takes him half an hour to get up or down them.

I haven’t seen him in the past few days. The last time I saw him he was breathing really, really, really hard while going up the stairs. I asked him if he needed help and he ignored me as usual. I actually waited a landing above his to make sure he got to his room alright, but his breathing sounded just terrible. Now I haven’t seen him in a few days. Maybe he got himself to the hospital, but I just somehow doubt it.

Should I call the landlord? The cops? Someone else?

Make a batch of something, muffins or cookies and knock on his door. If he answers, give the gift and say you haven’t seen him around, how’s he feeling? If he doesn’t answer, knock on the neighbor’s door. If necessary call the super.

Off the cuff I’d say to contact the landlord.

Unless you have better information on who might be a better contact. The police might be going too far - and at that point what additional information do you have to give them that makes them interested in the situation? And the local social services might not have any previous contact with the tenant and thus no information on him at all. And the landlord has some vested interest in the man’s well-being, plus having in their possession at least some information on him.

I’ve knocked on his door before when I knew he was home and been ignored. I think he’s mostly deaf. I’ll give it a shot but I think he just won’t answer. The neighbors on his floor are pretty self-absorbed jerks. I think I’ll give a knock and then escalate it to the super/apartment management company, they’re decent people and probably deal with this stuff a lot.

It’s weird, I don’t know this guy, he’s frankly pretty rude and a little creepy, but I’d be really sad if he’d just died alone in his apartment. I keep wanting to find out something good about him.

re: #104 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

I’d skip the step of knocking on the door honestly. If he has a hearing loss and usually doesn’t answer the door then you’d be better off contacting any on site building management first, off site second, and a call to the non emergency police number wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Cops do welfare checks all the time, this sounds like a situation where you should call.

Even if MLK was a Republican, what would it prove? Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, many southern African Americans were Republicans because the Republican party until that time really hadn’t pandered to white rage like they would later.Shit, it needs to be pointed out that the Republican/conservative hero of heroes Reagan thought so little of MLK that he only really signed the bill that established MLK Day because of a congressional veto and let’s not forget that right wing support for the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

It’s really annoying. Honestly, I argue the Civil Rights era as liberalism versus conservatism. I can think of many prominent liberals- both Republicans and Democrats from that time who favored Civil Rights and likewise I can think of many prominent conservatives from both parties who opposed Civil Rights. That’s the real way to drive the right wing off the wall on the issue. They don’t like it being pointed out that their ideology was okay with legalized and state sanctioned racism but then again, they push shit like that while at the same time embracing loons like Rand Paul who has said on the record that he would have voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Florida Prohibition Party chairman Bill Bledsoe said Tuesday that, while the party laments the social ills for which alcohol abuse is blamed, many casual observers — including the mainstream news media — often obfuscate its stance on liquor.

“There’s nothing in the Volstead Act [the repealed 18th Constitutional prohibition amendment] that says a person cannot drink,” he said. “But most people say, ‘Oh, you’re trying to take my booze away from me.’ Well, that’s just a lie from the pit of hell. What the national prohibition law did say is that no one can manufacture, sell, trade or do commercial business with alcohol; you can make all you want at home, as long as you stay home and drink it.

re: #190 chadu

Jon Stewart made the point: the Sequester gives Repubs everything they always wanted — gov’t cuts.

It’s something I’ve been pointing out for a while. The GOP had no reason to negotiate in good faith. They get the cuts they’ve always sought, and they’ve sought to blame Obama for anything bad that happens as a result of the cuts. For them, it’s a win win.

Thing is that cuts are necessary across a wide range of government agencies, but this is blunt force trauma to every single program, regardless of its importance and value. A CDC program that identifies emerging diseases and issues alerts for a new epidemic is cut just as surely as a road to nowhere project in the hinterlands. A weather satellite program is cut just as much as a defense contract for a tank upgrade that the Army doesn’t need or want.

The GOP is okay with all this, since it establishes the next baseline for which to submit still more cuts - this time on the “entitlement” portion of the budget as the GOP proposals have thus far indicated no intention of balancing cuts with closing loopholes or revenue adjustments - all while protecting the defense budget (and jobs that the defense budget creates*).

*The GOP tacitly admits that defense spending creates jobs and those must be protected, but government spending elsewhere is a waste despite the jobs and value added from working in maintaining and improving infrastructure, education, environmental protection, public health, etc.

Speaking of Drones. Have the RWNJ started freaking out about this yet?

Holder does not rule out drone strike scenario in U.S.

Washington (CNN) — Attorney General Eric Holder is not entirely ruling out a scenario under which a drone strike would be ordered against Americans on U.S. soil, but says it has never been done previously and he could only see it being considered in an extraordinary circumstance.

re: #223 wheat-dogghazi

By the way, when did NWS start naming winter storms? I’ve been out of the States for a while, and this is news to me.

NWS has nothing to do with the names. It’s all about the Weather Channel looking to monetize its storm coverage. The names aren’t official by any stretch, and aren’t officially recognized in the way that tropical storms are ( World Meteorological Organization, which sets the names on an annual basis for tropical cyclones).

Their demise can’t come soon enough. They’re the Wal-Mart of music stores, and in true fashion they knocked a lot of great Mom & Pop stores out of business.

I will line up for the going out of business sale, though. I will then get my revenge for every overpriced item I ever bought from them.

Ted Nugent berates female contestant and dismembers animal on reality show debut

The rules of the show appear to be an odd mix of “Survivor” and “Fear Factor,” with a little bit of “Animal Planet” thrown in for good measure. At one point Ted actually chases contestants around a field in some sort of modified golf cart, shooting them repeatedly at close range with a paintball gun as he brags about all his expert warrior training with every federal agency he could list.

When a female contestant won what appeared to be an American flag relay race of some kind, Nugent remarked: “She’s a humper!” and “The she-beast beat the he-beast. How cool is that?” He followed those classy lines up with, “Nice work, wild thing. Nice humpage,” and insulted a male contestant who placed second behind “wang dang sweet fucking thang.”

It got even weirder when he forced everyone to watch him smash a live chicken’s head on a rock and slice it open on camera. “It’s almost like being a mother and refusing to change your child’s diapers because it stinks,” he said. “This is so good. This is so good for you… I want you to see the beauty of this.”

GOP Senators Praise Obama’s Outreach On Grand Bargain

Ordinarily the president would speak directly with leadership. But as the White House sees it, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have been unwilling to begin a discussion about averting the sequester in a balanced way. The two GOP leaders have repeatedly ruled out raising any new revenue. So Obama is searching for Republicans who are willing to engage.

As part of his outreach, Obama has invited a number of Republican senators to dinner on Wednesday night at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington. Those expected to attend, according to The Associated Press, are Sens. Graham, John McCain (AZ), Kelly Ayotte (NH), Roy Blunt (MO), Pat Toomey (PA), Rob Portman (OH), Bob Corker (TN) and Ron Johnson (WY).

Graham said the broad consensus is that the deficit must be reduced by cutting long-term entitlement spending and extracting revenues by reforming the tax code to eliminate deductions.

They’re pushing another iteration of the Grand Bargain. Last time they got close to a deal, Cantor submarined Boehner and told him to kill the deal because Cantor thought the GOP could do better after the election.

Cantor was spectacularly wrong. Not only did the GOP lose seats in the House, but Obama won reelection and Democrats retained the Senate. The GOP didn’t moderate its position, and instead sought brinksmanship that could kill the economy by either sequestration or the fiscal cliff (or both).

Georgia city ordinance would require a gun in every home

Cronic’s ordinance reads: “In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition.”

Loopholes, however, allow certain residents to avoid gun ownership.

Anyone with a “physical or mental disability,” felons, “paupers” and those “who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine” could be exempted from the rules.

“It’s a deterrent ordinance,” Cronic insisted. “It tells the potential intruder you better think twice.”

But Nelson resident Lamar Kellett called the idea “big government at its worst.”

You can’t “force” a person to have insurance, but they want to force people to buy a gun.

Texas GOP: Planned Parenthood Is Convincing Teens To Get Pregnant So It Can Perform Their Abortions

State Sen. Ken Paxton (R) wants to put even more restrictions on health classes by preventing “abortion affiliates” from providing any sexual health instruction or contraceptive resources.

Texans who back Paxton’s measure argue that Planned Parenthood can’t be trusted to provide sex ed because, since the organization doesn’t want to “lose abortion business,” it has a vested interest in convincing teenagers to have sex and get pregnant:

During Tuesday’s hearing on Paxton’s bill, Renate Sims of Round Rock told the Senate Education Committee she strives to teach her five children that “married sex and only married sex is appropriate.”

“Abortion providers like Planned Parenthood and their affiliates can’t possibly communicate this message effectively because of their inherent conflict of interest. If teenagers consistently viewed sex as something to be saved for marriage, Planned Parenthood would lose abortion business,” Sims said.

Although several speakers criticized the way sex education is handled in specific districts, no supporter of Paxton’s bill provided examples of Planned Parenthood materials or information that has actually been used in schools.

Jim Hoft Finally Officially Designated As The Dumbest Man On The Internet With Reed Irvine Award

AIM was started by a Reed Irvine, a man who once denied that the El Mozote Massacre took place based purely on Reed’s own perception that the person reporting the deaths of over 800 civilians was a filthy communist. Irvine died in 2004 after a career highlighted by his role in promoting the conservative masturbatory narrative regarding the Vince Foster conspiracy and his general existence as a complete embarrassment to any idealized notion about the benefits of a free press. Given this splendid reputation, it makes sense that the award in his name is finally being bestowed upon the Imo’s Pizza of internet punditry, Jim Hoft.

“SMALL BUSINESS” LIKE WALMART.

I read a book awhile back I believe called “Bully of Bentonville” about the rise of Wal-Mart and the related controversies. Really eye opening.

One section that really stood out to me was about how Sam Walton used to use a law meant for small businesses to justify paying his employees LESS than minimum wage. He was taken to court over it and argued that each Wal-Mart store was, in effect, its own “small business” and he should therefore be allowed to pay his employees less than minimum wage.

It got appealed all the way up to the Supreme Court where, thank goodness, he lost.

The Waltons have fucked America.

Here in Wisconsin we have the Wisconsin Dells. It is a tourist trap basically with fudge shops, water parks and camp grounds. Rather than pay the local high school kids to do the work they import labor mainly from eastern Europe and set them up in migrant type camps. No siree Whitey McLunchpail don’t want to see no brown people behind the counter while his family is on vacation. Makes me sick at how phony it all is. Also makes me the wet blanket.

CWA: Violence Against Women Act Is Part of the War on Women

it should come as no surprise that Nance is now using the “war” rhetoric in her latest Washington Times op-ed: “When high-sounding legislation becomes a war against women.” That’s right, she now believes that there is in fact a war on women, but that it comes from supporters of the Violence Against Women Act.

She claims that VAWA “hurts sex-trafficking victims,” even though 93 Senators voted for a Sen. Patrick Leahy’s amendment focused on combating the trafficking of women and girls.

There is an aspect of seasonal and/or migrant labor: people coming over from Eastern Europe or other places are happy to take the sort of cheap accomodations they offer so they can save more money to send or take back home with them.

That is why one sees so many Eastern Europeans working in Western Europe’s agriculture as well as travelling fairs, circuses and a lot of temporary construction sites.

CWA: Violence Against Women Act Is Part of the War on Women

Quote from the CWA statement:

The Violence Against Women Act also promotes the decriminalization of prostitution of minors for states, which is also dangerous for trafficking victims. Decriminalization provides a perfect opportunity for pimps, traffickers and gangs to exploit minors in the sex industry by telling the minors that it is not illegal and that they will not get arrested.

I think this is the same organization or at least an organization aligned with it that claimed that Ellen DeGeneres’ “normalness” is why she was such a dangerous pick to be the JCPenney spokeswoman. Because we can’t have images of a lesbian woman who is actually happy and confident in who she is.

Republicans heralded it as a historic day for education and life-altering for children stuck in poorly performing schools. But tempers boiled over as Democrats called the maneuver “sleaziness” and a “bait and switch.”

The Senate broke down in chaos during the vote with every senator on their feet and many shouting at each other.

“This is historic for the children of this state,” Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, said over the shouts of angry Democrats.

“You went behind closed doors… This is not democracy. This is hypocrisy,” Sen. Quinton Ross, D-Montgomery, shouted at Marsh.

The House of Representatives approved the bill by a 51-26 vote. The Senate approved the bill 22-11.

Gov. Robert Bentley is expected to sign the bill next week.

Wow.

CWA used to be led by the wife of Tim LaHaye, co-author of Apocalypse-porn classic “Left Behind.” Somewhere along the way…I think from Fred Clark—I’ve encountered them being referred to as Concerned Ladies Against Sluts.

But for all of their derp-y credentials, that statement is just beyond the pale.
