The New Hero of the Right: Rand Paul

Crazy enough
Politics • Views: 26,527

Pseudo-libertarian kook Rand Paul’s 13-hour filibuster yesterday to block the confirmation of John Brennan as CIA director was so confused and senseless, even John “Get Off My Lawn” McCain was fed up. And Lindsey “Benghazi” Graham now says Paul’s filibuster has convinced him to vote to approve Brennan.

“Calm down, Senator,” McCain said, in an apostrophe to Paul. “The U.S. government cannot randomly target U.S. citizens.”

In his filibuster Wednesday, Paul criticized the White House over its drone policies, and for refusing to rule out military strikes against U.S. citizens on American soil.

McCain, a staunch foreign policy hawk, said Thursday that Paul’s warnings that the U.S. could target “Jane Fonda” or “people in cafes” bring the debate into the “realm of the ridiculous.”

“If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids,” McCain said, adding: “I don’t think what happened yesterday is helpful to the American people.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) echoed these criticisms, adding that he was “disappointed” in the 13 Republican Senators who supported Paul’s filibuster last night.

The right wing blogosphere is absolutely delighted with Rand Paul, of course, but it has nothing to do with his theatrical opposition to drones; it’s because any Republican who acts out in public and bashes President Obama gets their uncritical support. They’re already talking about having him run for President.

Note that Sen. Paul is a frequent guest on the conspiracy-peddling Alex Jones show, where he co-signs every deranged fantasy. This is the new hero of the right.

There is something funny one must admit about McCain lecturing a senator about engaging in theatrics. Anyhow, Rand Paul is their hero until they find a new one which will be next week sometime.

Yeah they could care less. Their problem is Obama’s WH has control of these things. They would probably be asking for more of them if Romney or McCain were president even.

Nah, what’s hilarious about McCain’s bit today was that he actually accused Paul of having done damage to the filibuster, suggesting that his 13 hour marathon might actually convince people to want to do away with the filibuster.

Meanwhile, those Democrats who were pushing for filibuster reform back in January were pointing to Paul’s filibuster and going “That’s how it’s supposed to be done!”

UAV drone attacks began under the Bush Administration. They were vastly expanded by the Obama Administration and a whole military/CIA infrastructure was built up around the programs. Oversight is absolutely critical so that the use isn’t abuse.

Each and every successive president after Obama will have UAVs at their disposal just as prior presidents used to know and rely upon carriers for force projection as needed. There are limitations on their use.

How the UAVs can or should be used is a needed question (even with Paul completely misrepresenting Holder’s position on UAVs used domestically), but Paul’s bluster yesterday ignores the real issue.

He was filibustering John Brennan’s nomination for CIA not because Brennan is unqualified, but because Paul wanted face-time and as McCain and Graham know all too well from their own theatrics - and called him on it.

Brennan deserves an up/down vote along with other administration nominees for other positions. The Senate GOP has continually blocked many of the nominations for no other reason than because they could.

That means that any number of judiciary positions and other agency positions have gone unfilled. It’s increased the acrimony in Congress and continues to keep gridlock in place.

Oh, and it’s hilarious watching the GOP and right wing fawn over Paul, who’s repeatedly called for ending foreign aid to Israel after these same GOPers and right wingers were busy claiming that former Sen. Hagel was a threat to Israel.

Here’s the problem with the “OMG drones!” argument:

Let’s say DHS has identified and located two individuals who happen to be foreign born naturalized U.S. citizens. These individuals are known to be plotting a chemical attack that could cost thousands of lives.

It’s clear they won’t surrender peacefully and an opportunity has arisen to strike them in a remote yet dangerous location.

Why wouldn’t a drone strike be justified in this instance?

Senator Rand Paul twice pushed for ending U.S. “welfare” (in his words) for Israel—which prompted seven Democratic Senators to author a letter firmly rejecting Paul’s proposal. Further, Paul has been a staunch opponent of general U.S. foreign aid—which has long been supported by the pro-Israel community—and even used his leadership PAC to push his anti-foreign aid agenda during the 2012 campaign.

“Senator Paul, a Category 3 hurricane is bearing down on a path that will take it’s eye a couple miles East of the center of Houston, Texas. Because the current storm path was considered highly unlikely until a couple days ago, the city has gotten a late jump on evacuations, and it’s projected that there will still be a quarter of a million residents in cars trying to flee the city when the first rain bands start to hit the suburbs. The president learns that a group of terrorists plan to explode a semi-trailer full of ammonium nitrate at a strategic complex of roads and bridges, killing potentially several hundred trapped motorists in the immediate aftermath. Actuaries predict that the ensuing chaos to the road system will lead to potentially 100,000 storm-related fatalities from people either drowning in flood waters or buffeted in 175 mph gusts. Neither the military nor law enforcement can get to the trucks without the drivers initiating a suicide strike that will kill hundreds of people. However, a drone strike will destroy the truck without detonating the payload, and is projected to kill roughly 50 bystanders in the process. Question, senator: if you were the president, given that extraordinary circumstance, would you order a drone strike on a target on American soil?”

Bryan Fischer: Attending tea party is an ‘excuse’ to be ‘vaporized’ by a drone

During his Wednesday Focal Point radio broadcast, Fischer applauded Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) for filibustering the confirmation of John Brennan to be the next CIA director over concerns that President Barack Obama was claiming the authority to assassinate American citizens.

“This is what a tyrant does,” the Christian radio host said of Obama. “Tyrants do not want to let people disagree with them, do not want to let them express their opinions if they are critical of the policies of the current regime. That’s how tyrants operate, and what Rand Paul is saying is, ‘That’s the direction we’re going here.’”

“Based on the way the administration is crafting their policy here on the use of drones, you’ve got to be concerned that something you might say at a tea party — something you might say at a tea party would be used as an excuse to drop a drone or a bomb from a drone — a missile from a drone on your house.”

Fischer added: “And you would not even find out about it until you’d been vaporized.”

But in a Thursday speech on the Senate floor, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) lashed out at the paranoia coming from Paul’s supporters.

Man, if Lindsey Graham calls you paranoid, you know you’re seriously fucked in the head.

As well he should. He helped derail filibuster reform, and is scared that Paul’s little performance yesterday may lend credibility to the argument that the talking filibuster does not harm the minority’s ability to address bills it disagrees with while allowing the government to continue functioning. There was actually talk this morning that Paul’s talking filibuster might actually lead to the defeat of Brennan’s nomination if some Democrats didn’t get a decisive answer to the drone question from the administration.

I do wish it had been someone more senior, more centrist to really force a discussion of drone use and the reductions in civil protections since 9/11.
But the who of it hardly changes the need for public and transparent discussions of these policies. What it seems has happened is the fear of the far right T.P has motivated far too many people to give this administration a blanket pass on civil liberties. A rather severe rise in executive power which used to be considered an important consideration just one President ago. These days not so much.

FISA, Patriot Act, Drones all need a full review. It’s long past time to sunset significant policies instead of endless near rubber stamp extensions.

Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy In Media is quite pleased with CPAC’s decision to ban the gay Republican group GOProud, and even thinks that “CPAC should be sponsoring a panel on the dangers of the homosexual movement and why some of its members seem prone to violence, terror, and treason.”

He warns that “there is a homosexual movement that has its roots in Marxism and is characterized by anti-Americanism and hatred of Christian values,” citing Bradley Manning and Floyd Corkins as “two of this movement’s members.” Kincaid goes on to write that homosexuality will lead to communism and the downfall of civilization, arguing that “this monster wants to impose itself on our children in the schools and even the Boy Scouts of America.”

Unsurprisingly, AIM will be giving an award to Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft at CPAC this year.

Okay agreed.

Now, everyone who is perfectly comfortable with a future conservative RW President having these powers as is or further expanded please chime in.

All opposed?

There are all kinds of reasons I would be uncomfortable with a future conservative RW president. This is very very low on the list.

I wonder if we had drones back then, even for just recon, if we could have saved some lives at Waco.

Drones are primarily used to achieve operational presence in areas we can’t deploy ground troops to and can’t keep manned air assets over due to resources and risks of them being shot down. How would a drone have provided superior intel over any other plane or asset with similar surveillance gear?

Don’t confuse the tools with the mission.

This. Anyhow. What I wish for in the future when Congress is expanding or okaying greater executive power is that they’d realize that presidents from both parties are going to use it. And yeah my problem with a future right wing conservative president would be more in policy than anything.

This is a bit of a situation. Wonder if it simmers down, or what.

It may deserve a higher place on the list as some of this makes it easier to get away with other things on your list.

Oh hey, I was talking to another long time Lizard on the phone about LGF. We were thinking you might be the longest term poster that is on much. Maybe so?

You two are missing the point. Obama is backing policies unwise in both the short and long term. It’s just that left leaning partisans can’t admit the short term stuff.

The law will catch up with today’s technology. Of course it will be a half-generation behind the technology of that time. In the meantime we will wing it, like we always have.

I’d have to look. Listen, I am just saying that executive power is expanded without understanding the consequences later. I’m in full agreement with you that these policies need to be scrutinized.

I am surpassed by a Babushka, a lawyer, and a meat popsicle. And several others, I’m sure. Registration started in 2004, some posters go back much earlier. Not me, though.

The man changes with the office more than the office changes with the man. Or something like that. Presidents are charged with keeping Americans safe, and probably most of them are going to err on the side of ‘safe’ over ‘free’. That’s why we have the other two branches of government.

Once again, the gaming industry takes a good solid performer and pisses all over it.

Well done EA.

Gus said this last night.

American Rightwingers are angry Jesus did not come yet even though they support Israel and breed red cows to slaughter on the soon to be built (soon to them) Temple Mount and everything. So they turn on Israel because even after they did all these Rube Goldberg like things to get Jesus to come back and kill everyone Jesus has not returned while they are re stuck with a black Muslim president.

The problem with apocalyptic people is that when the apocalypse does not happen they try and set it off on their own.
