Wingnuts Raging at John Brennan for Not Swearing on a Bible

Thin-skinned religious fanatics say what?

Vice President Joe Biden swears in CIA Director John Brennan in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, March 8, 2013. Members of Brennan’s family stand with him. Brennan was sworn in with his hand on an original draft of the Constitution, dating from 1787, which has George Washington’s personal handwriting and annotations on it. (Official White House Photo by David Lienemann)

The latest ludicrous right wing anti-Obama talking point, brought to you by the Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper (as so many of them are): No Bible for Brennan Swearing in.

John Brennan was sworn in today at the White House. He was confirmed as the new CIA director yesterday.

“Brennan was sworn in with his hand on an original draft of the Constitution, dating from 1787, which has George Washington’s personal handwriting and annotations on it,” according to the White House. He does not appear to have placed his hand on a Bible, a Torah, a Koran, or other sacred religious text as he said the oath.

GASP! No Bible? The horror!

You know, last time I checked, the Constitution specifically says that the federal government is not supposed to be in the business of endorsing religion. I look forward to the day when no politician ever feels compelled by thin-skinned religious fanatics to swear on a Bible, or any other “sacred religious text.”

But wait — the outrage isn’t finished yet!

UPDATE: Empywheel.net notices that this Constitution lacks a Bill of Rights: “That means, when Brennan vowed to protect and defend the Constitution, he was swearing on one that did not include the First, Fourth, Fifth, or Sixth Amendments — or any of the other Amendments now included in our Constitution. The Bill of Rights did not become part of our Constitution until 1791, 4 years after the Constitution that Brennan took his oath on.”

I suppose if you’re the kind of person who thinks swearing an oath on a Bible imbues the oath with magical power, swearing on a historic copy of the Constitution without the Bill of Rights means that John Brennan is now magically committed to destroying America.

Seriously — what the hell is wrong with these people?

Do you want that list alphabetically or categorically?

They’re mad that Brennan was sworn in on an original copy of the Constitution? Okay, I give up people. To steal from a quote commonly attributed to Tom Lehrer, political satire is dead.

And who cares if he didn’t swear in on a Bible. This country wasn’t founded because of the Bible. It was founded based on secular ideas and your religious or lack of religious beliefs shouldn’t matter. I swear these people want a theocracy. Forget Shariah, I worry more about a Christian theocracy.

6 Skip Intro  Sat, Mar 9, 2013 10:26:07am

What they want is an evangelical Pope of America to officiate at all swearing in ceremonies, and cast out all unbelievers of whatever the One True Religion of the moment is.

7 Targetpractice  Sat, Mar 9, 2013 10:26:26am

Those wigging out over his not swearing on a Bible but on the Constitution instead might do well to review that hallowed document that they were taking turns rubbing themselves all back in ‘11, specifically Article VI, Paragraph 3:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Um…then shouldn’t we be more scandalized by people that swear in on a religious document that contains zero Bill of Rights?

Or is this magic formula only applicable to secular documents?

Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (religiously unaffiliated) was sworn in using a copy of the constitution. No one cares about this shit anymore save a handful of wretched internet creatures. Of course they’ll say “this proves that he’s a secret Muslim!” Wouldn’t he use a Koran if he was a real Muslim? Maybe he did this because he could and more or less “felt like it.”

Point of interest: when I swore my oaths of office (Enlisted army, officer army, state of colorado employee) I did not have my hand on a bible or any other document. IIRC it isn’t required in courts when swearing in witnesses, either.

From Wikipedia, quoting Article VI, paragraph 3, “The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

That’s how things are in my country, the United States of America.

re: #44 Decatur Deb

BMINO?

It’s actually kind of interesting. I read a book about the 1912 election. TR actually had a lot of enemies within his party. It’s actually the reason why he was selected for VP because apparently the boss of the NY state GOP wanted TR away from New York so he suggested that TR be McKinley’s running mate in 1900 since McKinley’s first VP, Hobart had died in office. Little did they know. Anyhow, that’s why VP selections are so important. It’s why we look back now and know FDR made the right choice going with Truman over James Brynes (a segregationist) and Henry Wallace (very naive about the USSR). And it’s also why I will continue to criticize McCain for Palin even though they’re not in office.

Because there are some people who believe that the only way people will care about others is if they’re forced to do so by a higher power.

Funny, I heard Abu Ghaith continued talking after he had legal representation, so while Bryan thinks it would be fun to torture him, it might not be useful.

Fischer doesn’t care, he’s just hating on Barack Obama.

In Case You Were Wondering, We Think This Survivalist Ad Is Crap, Too

There’s so much to love hating about this piece of Prime Internet Hucksterism, starting with the tag line itself, “FEMA BANNED THIS VIDEO,” which is every bit as tantalizing as it is literally untrue, and of course goes unexplained in the “video” itself — except it’s not a “video,” but a really long Flash animation that can’t be paused or skipped through, which is why we downloaded a video capture program thing and turned it into an actual real video for you, the Discerning Reader. The entire painful ordeal — all 20 minutes of it — is below, but really, you can pretty much quit after the first five or so minutes, if you even make it that long. Yes, we will point out the most insanest crazymaking parts, too, so you really don’t have to watch it at all. God, with a whiny attitude like that, you’re never going to survive the coming societal collapse!

Because Jesus TOTALLY approved of torture!

My Gods.

Torture is for people who believe Jesus thought an eye for an eye was too lenient.

BTW. Emptywheel is not a wingnut blog.

92 Gus  Sat, Mar 9, 2013 11:24:19am

Emptywheel is run by former Firebagger Marcy Wheeler. The only reason she and Gawker are pushing this is because they’re far-left and can’t stand Brennan.

re: #75 calochortus

I think that would be fine. Doesn’t everyone need to know about “complete coverage of bottom brackets and cranksets” and so forth?

Complete coverage of bottom brackets cannot be overemphasized.

94 HoosierHoops  Sat, Mar 9, 2013 11:25:37am

I think swearing in on the Constitution is a brilliant idea and should be mandatory. After all they are swearing to uphold said document. We’ll even include the Bill of Rights so the RW doesn’t have a stroke.

95 Mich-again  Sat, Mar 9, 2013 11:27:09am

I keep a couple wingnut facebook “friends” just for amusement and the word from them is that John Brennan is a sekrit Muslim and that’s why he wouldn’t swear on a Bible.

I’ve always thought Marcy was a sharp cookie. Haven’t read her in 4 or 5 years.

Ooh. Even better.

A Theology of Liberation would get the evangelicals and even the Vatican up in arms.

Gustavo Gutierrez. Good stuff that seriously PO’d JPII. I’d be more inclined towards Original Blessing by Matthew Fox but the basic idea is fun.

I usually enjoy Marcy Wheeler. She tends to back her points up with documentable facts.

And as it happens I don’t like Brennan either. He was part of what I think of as W’s Torture Team.

I had to look up what a bottom bracket actually is.

The Dumbest Man On The Internet says that Obama is celebrating the unemployment rate. From Obama:

Yesterday, we received some welcome news on that front. We learned that our businesses added nearly 250,000 new jobs last month. The unemployment rate fell to 7.7% – still too high, but now lower than it was when I took office…

Hmmm. I don’t see any spike-the-ball in that, do you? Hoft, you fucking moron.

103 Gus  Sat, Mar 9, 2013 11:31:19am

Oy. I know what the conspiracy theory is. John Brennan took his oath on the constitution without the bill of rights therefore John Brennan won’t care about American’s right. Ugh. Oy. Derp.

When one is sworn in for jury duty there is no holy book involved. I believe it is the same for citizenship. These folks are making a mountain out of nothing.

Yes, I just read a dumb post at FDL that said Brennan requested to use Washington’s draft constitution, so that means he’s secretly planning to drone the fuck out of everybody.

If I wanted to see their heads explode, I’d take the oath on a copy of Das Kapital or The Communist Manifesto.

If you ever wanna have fun watching wingnut heads explode, point out to them there’s a relief of Mohammad in the Supreme Court.

As one of the “Lawgivers of History.”

That’s right, wingnuts…..the Supreme Court is part of the creeping Sharia! MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

re: #20 Dark_Falcon

See Rand, Ayn.

I wonder what percentage of right-wingers, those who say they admire Ayn Rand, (a) know that she was an outspoken atheist, and (b) have actually read Atlas Shrugged. Honestly, I can’t even begin to guess about (a) or (b). But I’m curious.

By the way, I’m no expert on Ayn Rand and I could be wrong, but I recall that she was an advocate of limited government, not NO government. She advocated capitalism, not anarchy. I believe she split with Murray Rothbard over this. I don’t recall that she ever had a problem with “government” providing basic services, like police or national defense. Of course, she advocated limited government, but I don’t believe she was nearly so hostile to “government in general” as some right-wingers seem to think.

As someone who admires Ayn Rand, while not sharing all of her viewpoints, it pains me to see the people who now embrace her as one of their own, from Pamela Geller to Paul Ryan. Rand herself would be even more outraged than I am.
