Ten Things to End Rape Culture

Walter Mosley’s piece is an excellent, excellent takedown of victim-blaming and is a sensible, well-written article with practical take-aways. I encourage you all to read it and to spread it.

We have far, far, far too much rape in our society. Women in our society are raped at an astonishing, depressing, tragic rate. The rape of children, irrespective of gender, is also enabled by our larger rape culture.

Much of the bastions of rape culture come from ‘social conservatism’ of the wingnut variety. The fetishization of masculinity, the hatred expressed towards female sexuality displayed in anti-abortion laws that humiliate— all of this contributes to a culture where women are raped.

Point #1 is right on the money:

1. Name the real problems: Violent masculinity and victim-blaming. These are the cornerstones of rape culture and they go hand in hand. When an instance of sexual assault makes the news and the first questions the media asks are about the victim’s sobriety, or clothes, or sexuality, we should all be prepared to pivot to ask, instead, what messages the perpetrators received over their lifetime about rape and about “being a man.” Here’s a tip: the right question is not, “What was she doing/wearing/saying when she was raped?” The right question is, “What made him think this is acceptable?” Sexual violence is a pervasive problem that cannot be solved by analyzing an individual situation. Learn 50 key facts about domestic violence. Here’s one: the likelihood that a woman will die a violent death increases 270% once a gun is present in the home Remember, a violent act is not a tragic event done by an individual or a group of crazies. Violence functions in society as” a means of asserting and securing power.”

Crime and Punishment . How many times have we learned after a rape that the perpetrator has a long list of arrests for assault , rape etc. So what happens ? These people are out of prison in less than 3years , only to do it again , and again another sentence reduced by “good behavior ” , “time served ” , “parole ” or “prison overcrowding ” . This usually goes on until the rapist or pedophile eventually kills someone ….and UNBELIEVABLY , they get off with sentences that allow them to get out yet once AGAIN !
First time offender pedophiles in many cases get PROBATION !!
Therein lies the problem . This is not a question of any “conservative ” view , nor has it anything to do with ignorance or education . Men kniw they are doing wrong , but think they can get away with it , or are willing to take a chance based on the possibility of , if caught , they’ll get out to do it again .

Yes, this. Honestly, the rape apologists anger me as a man because they act like we’re too stupid to know better.

Baptist pastor: Sex with underage girl ‘is exactly what Christ desires’

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday released letters in which former First Baptist Church pastor Jack Schaap explained that the underage girl she should have sex with him because it was part of God’s plan.

“In our ‘fantasy talk,’ you have affectionately spoken of being ‘my wife,’” Schaap wrote to the girl. “That is exactly what Christ desires for us. He wants to marry us + become eternal lovers!”

Last year, Schaap pleaded guilty having the girl transported across state lines into Michigan so he could have sex with her. Prosecutors said that the former pastor had tricked church members into bringing the girl to his cabin in Cadillac, Michigan because she was “in an extremely vulnerable state” and needed to spend extended time alone with him.

split agree/disagree.

Agree. The number of people convicted of sexual crimes is far too low, the punishments tend to be far too light.

Disagree. Recidivism. A lot of the people caught and punished don’t do it after they’re out.

Digression. Two parts. First, better conviction programs which is what many here have also suggested. The victim should not have to prove she was not asking for it. Second, better rehab process (a common hobbyhorse of mine). The punishment system in place doesn’t work well. The rehab system is severely hampered by being secondary to punishment.

Feinstein Snaps At Cruz: ‘I’m Not A Sixth Grader’

Cruz, a former constitutional law professor, began by reciting portions of the First, Second, and Fourth Amendments, and asked Feinstein whether the power of government to restrict certain types of guns would be equally appropriate given those provisions.

“Let me just make a couple of points in response,” Feinstein shot back at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. “One, I’m not a sixth grader. Senator, I’ve been on this committee for 20 years. I was a mayor for nine years. I walked in, I saw people shot. I’ve looked at bodies that have been shot with these weapons. I’ve seen the bullets that implode. In Sandy Hook, youngsters were dismembered. Look, there are other weapons. I’ve been up — I’m not a lawyer, but after 20 years I’ve been up close and personal to the Constitution. I have great respect for it. This doesn’t mean that weapons of war and the Heller decision clearly points out three exceptions, two of which are pertinent here.”

Feinstein continued: “It’s fine you want to lecture me on the Constitution. I appreciate it. Just know I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve passed on a number of bills. I’ve studied the Constitution myself. I am reasonably well educated, and I thank you for the lecture. … I come from a different place than you do. I respect your views. I ask you to respect my views.”

Life beginning at conception is science, personhood beginning at conception is politics, and that’s where Rubio is wrong.

And it’s not life *beginning* at conception, it continuing. Unless one wants to argue that sperm and egg are not alive. Which is why the issue is not biological life, but personhood and deciding at what point a separate entity should be recognized to having rights equal to (or possibly exceeding) those of the woman carrying the embryo. Which is a political decision, though science can be asked to provide data regarding independent viability and other facts.

Dick Morris Delivers Bad News To Republicans: Give Up On Roe V. Wade

In order to win back young women, Morris argued that Republicans should stop trying to make abortion illegal and instead focus on a bipartisan effort to reduce the instances of abortion.

“Single white women run screaming from the Republican Party, largely because of our pro-life position,” Morris said. Morris stressed that Republicans can remain pro-life in principle, but needed to shift their focus away from the courts and embrace polices like “adoption, adoption tax incentives, birth control, abstinence, parental notification, parental support … a whole range of efforts, some sponsored by the right, some sponsored by the left.”

Overturning Roe v. Wade, he said, was “a case we’re never going to win.”

Good luck with that, Dick.

56 Ming  Thu, Mar 14, 2013 10:42:39am

I have disagreements with both the left wing and the right wing. But one thing in particular that really disturbs me about the right wing, is that in recent years they often fail to show a simple horrified reaction, when it comes to violent crime. Of course, particularly sad and enraging examples of this are the various prominent Republicans who have spoken about rape. Another example, this one so absolutely heart-rending that I can’t even summon up any rage, is the casual attitude of many on the right wing about the tragedy of Trayvon Martin. Yet another example is the attitude, again I would have to call it casual, of many on the right wing, in regard to physical torture inflicted by our armed forces on people who are already in custody, and who therefore pose no threat. I could go on and on, Sandy Hook elementary school, etc. etc.

I’ll go out on a limb here and say that when enough people have such an uncaring, thoughtless, casual attitude about violence, Bad Things can happen. There is no excuse for right-wing opinion-makers to encourage any of this insanity.

60 kerFuFFler  Thu, Mar 14, 2013 1:10:17pm

I know it is important not to blame the victim but it seems like when people encourage women to adopt reasonable safeguards (like having a buddy system at large drinking parties), they are often drowned out by others insisting that that is just a way of blaming the victim. Look, I don’t think that a woman who gets falling down drunk at a party with strangers “deserves” to get raped——-but women who don’t want to get raped can make it a lot less likely by drinking in moderation. We teach our kids how to look both ways when they cross the road.
We don’t think that kids who are careless “deserve” to get struck by a car and no one says that teaching kids road safety is really just a way to blame pedestrian victims for being hit.

That said, we DO need to work as a society to teach men that rape is a simply horrific thing to do to someone. The way some guys smugly laugh about it——-like that Steubenville (?) football player is absolutely disgusting.

Change takes time however, and women should take steps to keep themselves safe in the meanwhile since there are so many awful people out there.

It’s not rocket science not to get totally wasted. For fuck’s sake. I don’t know why people think this is advice that actually has to be given. Do you really, really think that any woman out there thinks “Getting falling down drunk has no risks to it at all.”?
