At ‘Minority Outreach’ Panel, CPAC Participant Defends Slavery

Unclear on the concept
Wingnuts • Views: 26,357

And today at CPAC, a full-on right wing racist meltdown at a panel discussion on (yes, irony is dead) “minority outreach:” CPAC Participant Defends Slavery at Minority Outreach Panel: It Gave ‘Food and Shelter’ to Blacks.

What this guy says is no different than the rhetoric you can find in the comment sections of almost any right wing blog or news site.

A panel at the Conservative Political Action Committee on Republican minority outreach exploded into controversy on Friday afternoon, after an audience member defended slavery as good for African-Americans.

The exchange occurred after an audience member from North Carolina, 30-year-old Scott Terry, asked whether Republicans could endorse races remaining separate but equal. After the presenter, K. Carl Smith of Frederick Douglass Republicans, answered by referencing a letter by Frederick Douglass forgiving his former master, the audience member said “For what? For feeding him and housing him?”

[…]

When asked by ThinkProgress if he’d accept a society where African-Americans were permanently subservient to whites, he said “I’d be fine with that.” He also claimed that African-Americans “should be allowed to vote in Africa,” and that “all the Tea Parties” were concerned with the same racial problems that he was.

At one point, a woman challenged him on the Republican Party’s roots, to which Terry responded, “I didn’t know the legacy of the Republican Party included women correcting men in public.”

I for one am totally stumped as to why more African Americans don’t support today’s Confederate Party. It’s taken the name of the old Republican Party, for one. /

Just posted this downstairs but it belongs here. (And damn you, spell checker, don’t question my Brit-Eng spelling.)

Let me see if I’ve got this right.

I can break into Scott Terry’s home and abduct him at gun point, then pile him into a truck along with half his neighbours and slowly drive across country for three weeks with them shackled to the walls of the trailer. During this time half of his neighbours will die of dysentery and heatstroke, and at the other end I can lock the survivors in a shed and force them to work for me behind barbed wire and electric fences. I don’t have to pay them; in fact I can beat them as much as I like, and if I batter anyone to death, I can always go back to his old home town and get some more. Oh yeah, and I can rape his wife or girlfriend whenever I like, always assuming she survived the ride.

And he’ll thank me.

Tea Party Event on Racial Tolerance Turns to Chaos as White Supremacists Arrive | TPMDC

Scott Terry of North Carolina, accompanied by a Confederate-flag-clad attendee, Matthew Heimbach, rose to say he took offense to the event’s take on slavery. (Heimbach founded the White Students Union at Towson University and is described as a “white nationalist” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.)

“It seems to be that you’re reaching out to voters at the expense of young white Southern males,” Terry said, adding he “came to love my people and culture” who were “being systematically disenfranchised.”

Smith responded that Douglass forgave his slavemaster.

“For giving him food? And shelter” Terry said.

At this point the event devolved into a mess of shouting. Organizers calmed things down by asking everyone to “take the debate outside after the presentation.”

Brown, who took offense at the suggestion modern Democrats were descendants of the KKK, tried to ask a question later once things finally calmed down. She was booed and screamed at by audience members.

“Let someone else speak!” one attendee in Revolutionary War garb shouted.

“You’re not welcome!” a white-haired older woman yelled.

I’d like to think the look of WTF the one young woman gets on her face, after Capt. Oppressed spouts off about slavery, is a hopeful sign.

23 makeitstop  Fri, Mar 15, 2013 2:31:43pm

The takeaway:

Brown, who took offense at the suggestion modern Democrats were descendants of the KKK, tried to ask a question later once things finally calmed down. She was booed and screamed at by audience members.

“Let someone else speak!” one attendee in Revolutionary War garb shouted.

“You’re not welcome!” a white-haired older woman yelled.

Eventually she asked a question. It was about whether Republicans should call out racist ads.

Attendees interviewed by TPM afterwards expressed outrage at the way the event turned out. Not at the Terry and Heimbach — they were mad at Brown for her interruptions.

Holy crap. They are who we thought they were.

At Towson Univ., a Student Makes His Case for a White Student Union | American Renaissance

Race has arrived on the front doorstep of Towson University, and it’s a package no one wants to open. This fall Matthew Heimbach, a student at the public university in the Baltimore suburbs proposed starting a white student union. His calls attracted immediate attention; with his cloudy but very emphatic views on race, he’s excellent at courting publicity for the 21,000-student university…

While I think some leadership hangings could have been justified post civil war, the idea of forcibly reconstructing the South on non-racist lines is an unrealistic anachronism. If nothing else, there was not nearly enough political will in the North for that.

Also, the US Confederacy was much more deeply entrenched in society than either the Nazis or the Japanese militarists. Removing that aspect of the US south by military force is also unrealistic.

This was taped as white supremacist Jared Taylor spoke at Towson University in support of a White Student Union that Matthew Heimbach, the former president of the Towson University chapter of the White Student Union has been trying to get on campus. Thing is, when the overwhelming majority of your audience is black, and you feel the need to deny you have ever said that black people are inferior to whites when saying that has basically been your life’s work, it’s hard to say that the day went to the hatemongers.

When they don’t have a Democratic party anti-Christ figure to provide party unity, the GOP factions can start to fight among themselves like crazed weasels stuffed into a sack. This is a delightful trend that the Democrats need to encourage.

About

In response to the the profound and utter decline of West, Tribal Theocrat advocates the robust application of the Christian worldview devoid of all egalitarian and statist syncretism. Our written and audio media address taboo topics and other themes entirely neglected by church and state leaders, attempting to resuce our comrades from the group mind.

Our two overarching convictions are:

All order, whether personal, familial, ecclesiastical or state, is theocratic in that the highest ethical authority of every system is ultimately faith-based and presuppositional rather than religiously neutral and empirical. In locating the final authority of any institution or society, you have found its god.

The ideal and normative social order for families – and by extension communities and nations – is racial, not propositional; blood, not ideology, forms the proper and lasting bonds of affection and loyalty of any legitimate society.

While this site is inflexibly Christian in its authority and Occidental in its fraternity, we are no more dogmatic and kin-oriented than others. Even the novel multiculturalists have an uncompromising view of absolute authority and race: by the powers of their own autonomous reason (their god), they elect an order which blends all racial distinction into a single people, the race of Adam or humanity (their tribe). Believing that such a view defies God and invariably reaps cultural genocide and judgment, we prefer fidelity to the religion and people that have given us the glorious West.

All of life is racial and authoritarian, hence our namesake: Tribal Theocrat.

Expressions of loyalty to the Confederacy were considered the same as expressions of disloyalty to the United States (yo, Patriots!) The losers had it drilled into them that they totally lost. It was only once the GAR veterans died out and the Civil War was no longer in anyone’s personal memory that nostalgia for the Old South (like Gone With The Wind) started creeping back.

If every idiot we’ve read about for the past two days is a liberal plant, are there any conservatives at CPAC?

There’s a very funny piece of science fiction by Stanislaw Lem like that. An agent is disguised as a robot to spy on a planet on vehemently anti-human robots, except it turns out that most of the robots are actually disguised humans *also* engaged in deep cover espionage, and the entire arc of the anti-human sentiments has been fanned by the need not to break cover. The not funny part is it’s all a satire of the secret police methods in the Soviet Bloc.

CPAC is like the opposite. There’s killer robots wandering around giving policy pieces about Killing All Humans and getting applause, and the people running it are like “There’s no real robots here!” and “Only a racist would notice the violent robots!”

What happened was Confederate veterans were awarded pensions in, I’m not sure, about 1914 or so, then there were a whole bunch of bogus weddings of 80-year-old men to young women who wanted that pension, figuring the old guy would die soon and then she’d be set for life.

How much was it, like $25 a month?

Expressions of loyalty to the Confederacy were considered the same as expressions of disloyalty to the United States (yo, Patriots!) The losers had it drilled into them that they totally lost. It was only once the GAR veterans died out and the Civil War was no longer in anyone’s personal memory that nostalgia for the Old South (like Gone With The Wind) started creeping back.

Don’t forget Birth of a Nation. That recruitment tool for the KKK was powerful.

I think we are pretty much both right here, and my original post was ambiguous. The Union occupying army can (and did) stamp out overt expressions of support for the Confederacy as a political entity and symbol for rebellion.

However, the Union occupying army cannot (and did not) stamp out racism per se, such that Jim Crow would not have happened once the occupation was over. Thus, racism was an aspect of the Confederacy that could not really be removed in a military occupation.

re: #74 EPR-radar

The Confederate regime was removed in 1865. The racial attitudes underlying the Confederacy were not stamped out at the time (no real attempt was made, and it would have been foolish to try this with an occupying army).

When Grant was president, he tried very hard; there was a very strong 1875 civil rights bill, the Army was sent to root out the KKK, and… that’s why the drummed up whitewaterish hysteria to paint Grant as corrupt.

Then there was a disputed vote tally in Florida (even that far back, it was *always* Florida), crisis-crisis-crisis, and the party elites settled on “Tilden will drop his objections and let Hayes have the Presidency, on condition that Reconstruction be ended and the outside agitators federal government stop giving a damn how we do things below the Mason-Dixon line”). That’s how Jim Crow came to be.

Liberal race-mixers who pose as conservatives need to consider the two points made in this and the connecting post, and then refute them without using their cop-out “racist,” “bigot,” “Nazi,” or “white-supremacist” rhetoric. So read this slowly and remember that in debate no one cares for your feelings, and you will be awarded no points for visceral responses. What is valued most is critical thinking–clear theses, arguments and rebuttals..

The details of this history are interesting. I’m pessimistic enough to believe that something like the Hayes-Tilden deal was inevitable —- decades of military rule would have been needed to try to make the 1875 civil rights bill stick, and the political will for that was not present.

Here is how CBS.com reports on CPAC:

Despite loss, conservatives say Romney belongs at CPAC

Mitt Romney - the same presidential nominee who Rick Santorum once called “the worst Republican in the country” to face off against President Obama on the issue of health care, and who at least one tea party group deemed the day after his Nov. 6 election loss “a weak moderate candidate, hand-picked by the Beltway elites and country-club establishment wing of the Republican Party” - spoke today at the most who’s-who conservative gathering in the country.

Romney’s speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) […] was met with courteous applause.

His involvement in general, though, drew from convention-goers, speakers and VIPs a stark dichotomy, torn between wanting to embrace the “big tent” ideology of the Republican Party, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s assessment at the conference Thursday that Romney lost last fall because he wasn’t a true conservative.

“I hope to God he’s not the future” of the conservative movement, Andy Brown, from White Bear Lake, Minn., said of Romney. Brown said the former Massachusetts governor “didn’t have as much of a spine as I’d like,” and cited as his picks for the 2012 nomination two tea party favorites: former Rep. Allen West and Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Still, Brown said, Romney deserved his invitation: “He’s still one of us,” he said. “He may not have and share the same values as the majority of us, but he was working towards the same goal as us.”

Emory University graduate student David Giffin said “yes and no” to whether Romney should have been featured in a lineup that included rising stars like Sens. Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, but excluded New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

“Many have argued that what happened [with Romney’s loss in November] was because he didn’t quite go for broke on some of the principles that we value at the conference,” Giffin said. “And other people, I think, make a good case that he should be brought back, because he still is a part of the club, whether or not he lost.”

[…]

Foster Friess, one of the biggest donors to Santorum’s campaign, agreed: “In the past election I think many conservatives… weren’t quit sure where he stood,” Friess told CBS News. “But now that he’s not running for president, he can be very candid about where he stands. And I believe you’re gonna find that maybe not on every issue we like, but… he loves his family, he loves his God and he loves his country. What more could you ask?” [????????????]

Jacqueline Quander, a Tufts University student from San Francisco who identifies as an independent, said while it may not be “comfortable” for Romney to attend CPAC following such a wealth of different reactions to his campaign performance, he “definitely belongs here.” His moderation, she said, still “appeals to a lot of people” in the party.

University of Texas, San Antonio student Ian Jacobson reasoned that Romney served as an important page in the GOP’s history.

“If you’re gonna move forward, you have to know where you came from, and so it’s important to learn from the past, and take those lessons moving forward,” he said. “So I feel like anybody who’s been involved in the movement in the past and is willing to continue to work with the movement should be included in that movement.”

That “absolutely,” Jacobson said, “includes Mitt Romney.”

In summary, according to CBS.com, CPAC = one big if somewhat disjoint yet happy family welcoming in the “moderate” Mitt Romney.

And… who knew the GOP’s ideology was “big tent”? Anybody want to raise their hands?

In my book, there needs to be a full-on exposure of what many elements of the conservative movement represent.

Revanchist, neo-Confederate, separatist, theocrats and authoritarian power-worshippers who have not one jot of interest in anything but seizing and maintaining power and imposing their beliefs and views (social, cultural and economic) on everyone regardless of the fact that their views are utterly unrepresentative of what the United States stands for.

The black republicans at CPAC are consciously refusing to admit what they’ve been witnessing since Obama was elected—the GOP has become a place wherein racists, bigots, misogynists, xenophobes, and other disreputable miscreants can gather, air their opinions, gain national recognition and make money doing it. I’m black, 60 years old, I’ve lived in the South all of my life, and this guy K. Karl Smith, a black conservative, is telling the republicans that they can answer accusations of racism by calling themselves “Frederick Douglass Republicans?” He must really want to continue being a member of the Republican Party because it seems as if he’s willing to provide them with a BS tactic to deal with racism instead of being courageous enough to tell them that yes, they tolerant racism, and that they need to kick tools like Terry out of the party. I’ve never seen such a display of gutless cowardice coming from a black person in my life. This guy should have known that if some republicans hate President Obama because he’s black, he couldn’t reasonably expect some of them to treat him and the other black republicans at CPAC any better.

Makes sense. Religious obsession is about the only thing that could plausibly blind black people to the overwhelming racism of movement conservatism.

228 freetoken  Fri, Mar 15, 2013 5:15:06pm

And yes, K Carl Smith is one such fundamentalist:

Friends, don’t you remain in the dark any longer. You must not carry on as some (Samuel Jackson, Puff Daddy, Rev. Joseph Lowery, and Steve Harvey) have suggested you do—vote for President Obama because of his skin color. Why are you a follower of Jesus Christ? Is it because Christ had feet that resembled burnt bronze (Revelation 1:9-17)? Of course not!

The skin color of Jesus Christ isn’t the reason why you’re a Christian. Jesus was perfect and cannot sin. Yet, His Word is examined with concern even to the smallest detail. As with all of us, President Obama is of a sinful nature and far too many blacks give him a “color pass”. They never question President Obama’s policies and vote for him because he is the first black president. Our firmly held beliefs, not our allegiance to a political party or skin color, should determine how we vote. The way in which we vote ought to be the leading indicator of the values we possess. This isn’t about President Obama losing black votes. On the contrary, it’s about giving God the glory through your vote.

Evening Lizardim from the soon-to-be-snowbound wild north country. How go things in the war on derp?

CPAC has proven to the world that irony is dead, where a panel discussion devoted to wingnut whining about being called racist was livened up by contributions from neo-confederate apologists for US slavery.

I’d really like to see something like the preceding paragraph appear in the mainstream media. Aren’t they ever going to do their jobs?

If I’m reading correctly, the profile says that guy was trying to be a SEAL for 10 years.

Shipped out to boot camp after high school in 2000. So, maybe what? 17 + 13 = 30.

From that site:

The *egros had overtaken the cafeteria, forcing us white boys to scrounge for an alternative haunt lest we become victims of their jeers and bullying. So, we congregated on the bricked wheel-chair ramp near the entrance of the high-school and spent our lunch time daydreaming about the future and having meaningless adolescent debates.

My friend Josh was adamant about joining the Army and going out for Special Forces, perhaps the Airborne Rangers. George (who was never one to be outdone) opted for the Green Beret and I, being the eccentric one of the bunch, proudly declared my desire to be a Navy SEAL.

It wasn’t long before we met our respective recruiters and went our separate ways.

I shipped out to boot camp in Great Lakes, December of 2000 armed only with a loose-knit evangelical faith, neo-conservative convictions and the desire to be a hero. It was brutally cold and late at night when we were all ushhered off the bus. Men were screaming at me and I had no idea why. Orders were shouted, young men were everywhere and it was generally chaotic.

257 Eclectic Cyborg  Fri, Mar 15, 2013 5:47:40pm

OT, but wanted an opinion on this. I had to go pay my water bill today at the County office (they charge you a $3.50 fee to pay online). So anyway I paid in cash and for whatever reason, the female clerk jokingly withheld my change from me when she gave me the receipt. After she gave me just the receipt and no money, I looked at her and said very seriously: “And my change?”

Her response: “I was expecting a smile! It was a joke.” Then she gave me my money.

To me that was kind of a dumb thing for her to do.

Do you want to know how to trump the race card and talk to your family members without fear of being called a racist? he asked. Tell them you are a “Frederick Douglass Republican.”

It is that simple. Also, he has two books available that you should buy. Let him explain.

Frederick Douglass is the key to appealing to “blacks, Latinos, women, young people.” How?

He offers the “answer to the diversity inclusion problem, a way to defeat vile and malicious attacks of the left’s propaganda machine. They call us a racist, we back up…. They want to humiliate us. They want to intimidate us.”

(At this point a man comes in dressed as a revolutionary soldier carrying a giant yellow “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.)

“The word conservative,” Smith explains, “the word ‘Republican,’ the word ‘U.S. Constitution,’ those words have a negative connotation in this country. We’re losing the propaganda battle. You might as well call yourself a racist. Say ‘Frederick Douglass Republican.’ It piques interest. Those who frame the debate win the debate.”

He explains that Douglass was “born below poverty. When you’re born into poverty at least you own your own body.”

Douglass, Smith notes, never slept in a bed until the age of 10. He escaped from slavery at the age of 20. What does that mean?

“Slavemaster-run health care,” Smith says. “Slavemaster entitlements. Douglass was a 47 percenter. Slavemasters were Democrats.”

I am not making any of this up.

“Douglass,” he goes on to note, “was a capitalist.”

“AMEN,” says the revolutionary soldier.

The high school students (liberal, visiting from New York City) cannot believe what they have just witnessed.

“I don’t understand how aligning yourself with a black person who lived a really long time ago makes you not a racist,” Katie Hirsch, the high school student next to me, says.

“Even aligning yourself with a black person today doesn’t make you not a racist,” her friend Alexandra Barlowe adds. “Can we just talk about how the man just stood up over there and literally asked for segregation?

“The fact that there is a session like this shows how ignorant the Republican Party is in so many ways. The fact that they’re on the defensive about this.”

“We’re from New York City,” Hirsch says. “We don’t really deal with people like this.”

“Essentially what it is is allowing people to justify their racism by saying they’re a Frederick Douglass Republican,” Barlowe notes.

I agree, age can sometimes be tough to nail down. I’m 31 but I look more like mid-20s. Some of my friends my age look closer to 40, others closer to 20.

Earlier today I saw a 28 year old woman who could have easily passed for 19.

Kinism is the belief that the God-ordained social order for mankind is “tribal and ethnic,” and focuses on man’s duty to “love one’s own kind”. Kinists advocate the idea that extended families should live together in large groups. They believe the ideal and normative social order for families – and by extension communities, states and nations – is one defined by race and blood, not propositions or borders, and that this natural order forms the proper and lasting bonds of affection and loyalty for any legitimate society. It is considered an offshoot of Christian Reconstructionism that originated among anti-immigration traditionalists in the Southern United States.

Note: this would explain why Rushdoony gets mentioned on shotgunbarrellstraight. It’s white seperatism plus Dominionism.

Taken at it word, the idea is everybody living in separate ethnic enclaves, all operating under the same Christian nationalist governance and value system.

Given that advocates include a fistful of neo-Confederate racists, yeah, pretty much “white people rule the world.”
