In some ways I agree. In others I’m glad he did. It brought the whole thing to a head, out into the open for everyone to see. I suspect that had it not occurred a lot of ex-Republicans would have voted Republican in the last election, just to name one consequence.

It’s going to be a rough decade. What we are after that will be different from what we were a decade ago, but in the midst of the change it’s hard to say where we’re actually going to end up. The thing is the spotlight on that particular nastiness may actually wind up helping us be better, later.

Typhoid Mary wasn’t innocent herself, at least not later. She knew she was carrying a disease, but she didn’t want to given up cooking, because it was the best paying job she could hold down. Nor was she willing to let doctors operate on her, though given the state of medicine at the time she can’t really be faulted for that.

Then there’s the math. The number of bullets purchased wasn’t actually 1.6 billion, it was 450 million over five years, or 1,384 rounds per federal law enforcement agent, or 276 rounds per year, or 23 rounds per month. I blew through way more than that at shooting ranges when I was in the Army. And it was bought in bulk to save money. And those tanks? They aren’t actually tanks.

Disagree. First, it isn’t an “always” rule. If it were we’d have seen Huckabee, not Romney, in 2012.

Second, there are some wild currents that didn’t get settled in the previous cycle. If they’d been settled we would not have seen three violations of the Hastert rule so far.

Third, Santorum wasn’t a strong second finisher. He was nose-diving under his own exposure instead.

No, I still contend that 2016 is going to be the crisis year. That’s the year I think the Nativist and Dominionist divisions will get dominant choice of candidate. Then two cycles of really nasty purity purges within the GOP, but not till the Gideonites get beat with their preference leading the way.

No, it won’t be 2014. Barring something extraordinary, the Republicans will remain in control of the House then - and the hard right will remain strong if not dominant as well. It’s not working, though:

Today at 10AM there was a very large meeting at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) headquarters in Clarksburg, WV. The meeting was held in an auditorium and included everyone – from agents to the secretaries. The meeting was organized by the Director of the Biometric Identification Management Agency (BIMA), Colonel Bolo (ret.).

Bolo summarized the purchase of 24 new armored vehicles (each costing $400k) and the recent appearance of 20 mobile headquarters that are now present at the facility. The mobile units are semi-trailers with attached generators in the front; are of a shiny, mirrored-silver finish; and have no identifiable markings on them at all. There are 20 of them parked (visibly in front) at 1000 Cluster Hollow Rd, Clarksburg, WV as of today. Additionally, there are 24 armored cars (the same ones we have seen with DHS markings) parked in a different lot on this property, but they too may be visible.

The Colonel went into great detail on a list of patriot/constitutional groups. According to witnesses, this is a list that may be identical or very close to the one put out by the SPLC but had over 1000 groups on it. He explained that although groups may take advantage of the 2nd Amendment debate to garner followers now, at the heart of all these organizations is a racist core; one that poses a threat and will need to be dealt with soon. This is when he tied the armored cars and mobile command trailers to ‘the mission’.

The armored cars (those at the facility and nationwide) are to effect high-risk warrants on the ringleaders of the listed various groups with command centers being placed as necessary. The DHS and FBI are planning to move at one time against the listed groups; with SWAT teams being utilized against the more threatening ones. The colonel explained that all these groups have been successfully infiltrated and the leaders identified. He also explained that this is part of the new Internal Security Force that the president has been alluding to. In answering a question from an attendee regarding the mass purchase of ammo, he also stated that the buildup of arms and ammo was specifically for this ‘mission’.

The witness has told me that after the meeting, everyone they seen were against this. People were complaining, shaking their head in disbelief, and asking what the heck going on. According to them, NOBODY (including federal agents present) planned on going along with this and many even talked about how this will ignite a war.

The report I received can be verified through any personal contacts you may have at this center or connected to the agencies mentioned. You may also visibly inspect the lot for these trailers by driving to the location in Clarksburg. The witness was extremely bothered by the meeting and has said ‘it is coming and a hell of a lot sooner than people think’.

I used to think that mass roundups would never happen – but with this new information, I can clearly see that this is exactly what is going to happen (at least to a certain number of militia/patriot groups). And inevitably, any action this crazy will result in a reaction by others. The specter of Civil War in this country is a real and present danger folks – prepare.

Completely fictional, of course, but some people clearly are prepared to believe it.

I’ll summarize (well, as much as longwinded me summarizes anything).

There was a bit of a crisis back when Perot got such a huge showing against Bush and Clinton. One part of this was the realization that the money involved in elections basically split between two parties. Two simultaneous efforts began. First, the people who really wanted third parties moved to make sure they could get some of that. Second, the guardians of status quo worked to make sure the two parties kept the whole.

The rough compromise (which varies from state to state) is that the money is split between “major” and “minor” parties. There are two thresholds: one to reach “minor” and another to reach “major”. The basic reality is that as long as there are two majors, the only way to be a minor is if pretty much all “other” votes go to the same third party. ON the flip side, it’s possible for one of the majors to become a minor, at which point money could get seriously spread around.

The threshold test tends to be performance in either the previous governor or presidential election - another reason why those are such a focus.

Bottom line: if the GOP were to pull less than 35% (more or less) of the total vote it could suddenly find itself getting a lot less of the “election support” dollars provided in the various states.

Interesting. If the GOP were to pull less than 35% in a national election, they’d be in it deep. If they keep going down their particular primrose path of crap, I could see that happening by 2024.

So, I’ve been trying to gauge the conservative response to the whole “white supremacy” thing yesterday. The usual responses are:

1) He doesn’t represent “real” conservatives.

2) It was the work of a democratic plant and/or Democratic sources are skewing the story, he doesn’t represent the “majority”

3) NAACP! La Raza!

Yeah. Some of the people on these political debate boards make Killgore look like Aristotle. I haven’t seen any conservatives standing up against the litany of “why don’t whites have an NAACP, man” comments that I have seen. It’s not as if there’s any lack of opportunity.

This story on the release of the final Lyndon Johnson tapes is kind of amazing:

They also shed light on a scandal that, if it had been known at the time, would have sunk the candidacy of Republican presidential nominee, Richard Nixon.

By the time of the election in November 1968, LBJ had evidence Nixon had sabotaged the Vietnam war peace talks - or, as he put it, that Nixon was guilty of treason and had “blood on his hands”.

…

[I]n the summer of 1968. Nixon feared a breakthrough at the Paris Peace talks designed to find a negotiated settlement to the Vietnam war, and he knew this would derail his campaign.

He therefore set up a clandestine back-channel involving Anna Chennault, a senior campaign adviser.

At a July meeting in Nixon’s New York apartment, the South Vietnamese ambassador was told Chennault represented Nixon and spoke for the campaign. If any message needed to be passed to the South Vietnamese president, Nguyen Van Thieu, it would come via Chennault.

In late October 1968 there were major concessions from Hanoi which promised to allow meaningful talks to get underway in Paris - concessions that would justify Johnson calling for a complete bombing halt of North Vietnam. This was exactly what Nixon feared.

Chennault was despatched to the South Vietnamese embassy with a clear message: the South Vietnamese government should withdraw from the talks, refuse to deal with Johnson, and if Nixon was elected, they would get a much better deal.

So on the eve of his planned announcement of a halt to the bombing, Johnson learned the South Vietnamese were pulling out.

He was also told why. The FBI had bugged the ambassador’s phone and a transcripts of Anna Chennault’s calls were sent to the White House. In one conversation she tells the ambassador to “just hang on through election”.

When he became convinced it was being orchestrated by the Republican candidate, the president called Senator Everett Dirksen, the Republican leader in the Senate to get a message to Nixon.

The president knew what was going on, Nixon should back off and the subterfuge amounted to treason.


Publicly Nixon was suggesting he had no idea why the South Vietnamese withdrew from the talks. He even offered to travel to Saigon to get them back to the negotiating table.

Johnson felt it was the ultimate expression of political hypocrisy but in calls recorded with Clifford they express the fear that going public would require revealing the FBI were bugging the ambassador’s phone and the National Security Agency (NSA) was intercepting his communications with Saigon.

So they decided to say nothing.

I’d take that article with a grain of salt. The BBC never liked Nixon and and to say he was unjustified in telling the South to hold out is an accusation the article does not back up. Nixon may well have had good reason to believe that the concessions being offered by Hanoi were phony. Its impossible to say without knowing what the concessions were.

Actually, at that time Nixon was not an official representative of the US. There are some laws involved in speaking as such to a foreign power.

It is absolutely, deeply wrong to do so. He could publicly make his positions known, but to actually negotiate— that’s very obviously crossing a line.

But five years later the war was still going, greater concessions never materialized, there weren’t really any other meaningful attempts at peace talks. That’s pretty strong evidence that he was, in fact, unjustified in telling the South to hold out. All it got him was that Republicans could spend the next 40 years bitching about John Kerry supposedly meddling by urging the South to please sit their asses down at that table and talk.
