Being a philanderer has never really been a negative for a politician, just an occasional bump in the road:

Mark Sanford awaits GOP runoff challenger; winner to face Colbert Busch in general election

Former Gov. Mark Sanford will likely take on Charleston attorney Curtis Bostic in a GOP primary April 2 to represent the 1st Congressional District, according to unofficial race results Tuesday.

Because Bostic and a third candidate, Sen. Larry Grooms, R-Berkeley, finished with less than 1 percent of votes separating them, an automatic recount has been triggered under state law.

Sanford captured a commanding 37 percent of the vote while Bostic tallied 13.3 percent, according to unofficial results late Tuesday. Grooms took 12.4 percent.

Steubenville: this is rape culture’s Abu Ghraib moment

Here we have incontrovertible evidence of happy young people not only hurting and humiliating others, but taking pleasure in it, posing with their victims. The Abu Ghraib torture pictures were trophies. The Steubenville rape photos are trophies. They’re mementoes of what must have felt, at the time, like everyone was having the sort of fun they’d want to remember, the sort of fun they’d want to prove to themselves and others later. The Steubenville rapists had fun, and they broadcast that fun to the world. They were confident that nothing could touch them, so baffled by the idea of punishment that they wept like children in court.

Mississippi resists attempts to address its obesity:

Mississippi law bans restrictions on food portions

A new law in the most obese state in the nation says Mississippi cities and counties can’t ban the Big Gulp or put other local regulations on food and drink.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2687 Monday, and it became law immediately.

“It is simply not the role of government to micro-regulate citizens’ dietary decisions,” Bryant said in a statement accompanying the bill signing. “The responsibility for one’s personal health depends on individual choices about a proper diet and appropriate exercise.”

Some legislators called it an “anti-Bloomberg” bill — a jab at New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who tried to ban the sale of super-sized soft drinks. A New York judge blocked the city’s effort last week.

Giant squid DNA study produces ‘tantalizing questions’ for scientists

Scientists announced they had peeked into the DNA of the giant squid, seeking to demystify a deep-sea creature that has haunted sailors’ dreams for centuries.

But their findings, published Wednesday, threw up some tantalising questions in turn.

They include the likelihood that there is just one species of giant squid, and not a constellation of species as some experts have thought.

And, far from being a rarity, the giant squid could inhabit the deep ocean in large numbers, its pre-larval offspring riding warm currents to disperse globally, the exception being the polar regions.

Evidence “strongly suggests that the family Architeuthis consists of a single species of giant squid, namely Architeuthis dux,” the biologists reported in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

“If so, this species is cosmopolitan and likely has a substantial population size.”

The use of chemical weapons in the region would just cause more problems. At the very least, their use could mean tighter sanctions against the Syrian government.

Continuing the discussion from a few threads ago, I found a .pdf published by the State of California that breaks down the types of firearms recovered at crime scenes in 2011, the latest year for which a report has been published. Earlier years are available if you’re interested.

Of the 119 qualifying firearms examined, there were 100 (84 percent) handguns, 12 (10.1 percent) rifles, and 7 (5.9 percent) shotguns. Of these firearms, 5 (4.2 percent) were assault weapons (as defined in California Penal Code sections 30510 and 30515) and 3 (2.5 percent) were classified as a short-barreled shotgun or rifle. The most commonly encountered caliber was 9mm Luger, followed by 40 Smith and Wesson (S&W), and 22 rimfire.

What’s interesting about the report is that it goes on to provide cross tab breakdowns of firearms used in various crime categories: homicides (handguns 85.5%), firearms used in violent crime not involving homicide (handguns 83%), firearms used in street gang crimes (handguns 91.7%), and firearms involved in drug trafficking crimes (handguns 100% but not statistically meaningful in this category as only one gun was recovered in this category in 2011.)

One significant caveat is that local police department laboratories submit information to the annual State report on a voluntary basis, how this may skew the numbers is unknown. However if you go back year by year there is one inescapable conclusion, handguns are the type of firearm used in the vast majority of gun crime. At the end of the report is a graph going back to 2000 that compares the total number of guns used in crimes vs. the number of assault weapons as defined by California law.

re: #45 EdDantes

I reject both.

You should know that evolution is something we can and have observed in the laboratory.

Twenty years ago, evolutionary biologist Richard Lenski of Michigan State University in East Lansing, US, took a single Escherichia coli bacterium and used its descendants to found 12 laboratory populations.

The 12 have been growing ever since, gradually accumulating mutations and evolving for more than 44,000 generations, while Lenski watches what happens.

Mostly, the patterns Lenski saw were similar in each separate population. All 12 evolved larger cells, for example, as well as faster growth rates on the glucose they were fed, and lower peak population densities.

But sometime around the 31,500th generation, something dramatic happened in just one of the populations - the bacteria suddenly acquired the ability to metabolise citrate, a second nutrient in their culture medium that E. coli normally cannot use.

Indeed, the inability to use citrate is one of the traits by which bacteriologists distinguish E. coli from other species. The citrate-using mutants increased in population size and diversity.

re: #36 EdDantes

Generally, Creationists are against racism and One Blood is no different.

Well, there have been plenty of creationists who indeed are racists.

As for the “One Blood” movement, it appears that racism against Africans (at least based on Ham) isn’t their thing, but…. the story Ham is used to beat up on another group:

[…]

Notice that when the sons of Noah are listed, Ham is described as being ‘the father of Canaan.’ The names of the other two sons are mentioned, but Ham is particularly singled out as being the father of Canaan. Why is this so?

[…]

The descendants of Canaan were some of the most wicked people to ever live on the earth—the people of Sodom and Gomorrah for instance. What is interesting to note is that the Bible seems to indicate, in Genesis 9:22, that when Ham was disrespectful to his father Noah, this involved some sort of sexual connotation.

It is indeed possible that Noah saw in Canaan the same sin problem that his father Ham had. It is a sad fact of history (there are a number of recorded instances in the Bible) that when the father sins, the next generation learn from the father and are often more wicked than their father.

Therefore, it seems that Noah understood that Canaan’s descendants would also reflect this rebellious nature. Remember, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were judged for their sexual perversion.

The curse of Canaan has nothing whatsoever to do with skin color, but is in fact an example warning fathers to train their children in godly principles. If this is not done in one generation, then generations to come will express their rebellious nature as seen in the wickedness of Canaan’s descendants.

In other words, Ham passed down teh ghey to his descendants, thus they were wicked.

Creationists may come in different flavors, but they all justify their own biases behind what they declare as true creationism.

I’ve found Biblical literalists use the Bible as a series of “just-so” stories to explain why things are the way they are, or to justify why things shouldn’t be different (coz God ordained it that way). Which is basically why the books were written in the first place.

Other believers, who are generally NOT creationists, find evidence in the Bible, especially the NT, for people being generous, kind, inclusive and all that kinda librul shit.

Well, sure. Critical analysis of the text is anathema to literalists and Bible-thumpers, who reject the fact that the books were written and edited for political and theological reasons by fallible authors over centuries, long after the events in Genesis and Exodus supposedly happened.

Studying the Bible in light of historical context and scholarship is not the goal though. It’s being used as the ultimate “argument from authority” and if anything most of the Bible scholarship is showing that the “book” has been changing and evolving as well - which does not fit the worldview they want and can lead to their authority as sole interpreters of what God commands to be done.

Some additional data on the training accident that killed Marines in Nevada. Appears to have occurred with a 60mm mortar. And the USMC and Army have both suspended use of the weapon while the investigation goes on.

It still appears that the accident was a round detonating in the mortar tube. So the investigation will probably focus on that lot of mortar rounds to see if there was defective fusing or some other noticeable flaw.

My son, when he had to prove his own U.S. citizenship to get U.S. citizenship for his kids (born in Israel but they were living in Moscow) he had to provide documents showing a 7-year continuous residence in the U.S.

His school was cheap and did not make yearbooks and he didn’t save all his report cards.

A Man’s Guide to Defending Yourself from a Rape Conviction

A Virtually Flawless Plan to Stop a Rape Conviction from Ruining Your Life:

1. Don’t rape anyone

A bold plan, I know, but it’s almost 100% guaranteed to save you from being labeled a rapist for the rest of your life. “But,” you ask, because you’re an asshole, “what about those bitches who run around screaming ‘rape rape rape’ every time some guy uses some roofies to loosen her up a little bit?”

Ah, therein lies the secret to my plan. You see, somewhere around two percent of rape accusations are false. That means 98 times out of 100, if someone says you raped them, you actually did! So by simply not raping anyone, you instantly have a 98% chance of protecting yourself from the devastating consequences of a rape conviction! Amazing!

The executive director of Colorado’s department of corrections was shot dead by an unknown gunman at his home Tuesday night, apparently when he answered a ring at his front door, authorities said.

Why the director, Tom Clements, was shot and by whom was not clear.

“The initial information was the doorbell had rung and when Mr. Clements answered the door he was shot,” El Paso County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said. Investigators were working to confirm that information.

Minor error. If you don’t rape the protection rate isn’t 98%. It’s 99.4%. Per THIS report, the false allegation rate (in the UK) is 0.6%.

So the plan is even better than the author thought. (And the scum that use the various false-rape jokes are even greater scum than we thought.)

Here is my first FTD experience. I usually send flowers from 800flowers or Proflowers but I thought I would try something new.

Saturday:
My mom’s birthday was on Saturday. I ordered flowers from FTD and they were supposed to deliver them on Saturday. She got a call in the morning that they would be there later in the afternoon. I got an email from FTD saying they were delivered. I called my mom to wish her a happy birthday and asked her how she liked the flowers. She said ‘What flowers?’ Nobody showed up. My wife called them and after apologizing they said they would send them the next day.

Sunday:
I called her in the evening. No flowers, no call. My wife called FTD again and the woman said she was sorry and sent a message but got no reply. They would be sending flowers on Monday.

Monday:
I got a call from FTD telling me I was getting my money back because the recipient cancelled the flowers. I figured my mom didn’t want to wait any longer. Later I called her and she said FTD called her in the morning and said they would be delivering later that afternoon. I told her that they called me and said she cancelled the order. She said ‘What? I would never turn down flowers!’ My wife called them back and was told my mom cancelled the order. (Fucking liar) After telling them that was not true the FTD person got shitty and started to argue about it. Next person to talk to was the supervisor. Same thing, they argued about it and was pretty much a jerk on the phone. No flowers are going to be delivered.

Tuesday:
I get an email from them:

Scotland may allow Jedi to perform marriage ceremonies

The Force is strong with the Jedi in Scotland. The Free Church of Scotland is pushing a bill that would grant those who have literally made “Star Wars” a religion the power to perform marriage ceremonies.

The BBC reports that the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill would apply to other nonreligious groups such as the Flat Earth Society and the Jedi Knights Society, aka Temple of the Jedi Order.

And while it may sound like a joke to most, the Jedi religion is quite popular in some parts of Europe. In England, it is the second-most popular “alternative religion,” with more than 175,000 people listing themselves as Jedi in the 2012 nationwide census.

“Our current consultation covers not only the introduction of same-sex marriage but also the detail of important protections in relation to religious bodies and celebrants, freedom of speech and education,” a Scottish government spokeswoman said.

“At the moment, marriage ceremonies by bodies such as humanists have been classed as religious, even though the beliefs of such organizations are nonreligious.”

This image shows a giant star-forming region in the southern sky known as the Carina Nebula (NGC3372), combining the light from 3 different filters tracing emission from oxygen (blue), hydrogen (green), and sulfur (red). The color is also representative of the temperature in the ionized gas: blue is relatively hot and red is cooler. The Carina Nebula is a good example of how very massive stars rip apart the molecular clouds that give birth to them. The bright star near the center of the image is Eta Carinae, which is one of the most massive and luminous stars known. This picture is a composite of several exposures made with the Curtis Schmidt telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory.

Not just derp, but lies.

Apparently Gov. Christie ordered flags in NJ lowered for Whitney Houston because she was from NJ and very popular. Wingnuts for some reason like to blame this on Obama. That is the Aron Kodesh (the Holy Ark) where the Torah scrolls are kept. Yes it must always face Jerusalem.

The Aron Kodesh is not the same as the bimah (pulpit), which is the red-covered structure in front of the Aron.

Dropkick Murphys singer punches out Nazi at New York show

Why take the skinheads bowling when you can punch them out?

That’s the philosophy Dropkick Murphys singer/bassist Ken Casey took during a recent show at New York’s Terminal 5 when a so-called skinhead displayed a Nazi salute onstage.

The incident took place during the band’s song “Skinhead on the M.B.T.A.,” a tribute to the blue collar punks of Boston which routinely includes a stage invasion during the band’s riotous live shows.

“As the band kicked into T.N.T. by AC/DC some moron started seig heiling (the nazi salute) in time to the beat,” blog Rocks Off recounted. “”Ken Casey noticed this and ran right over to the guy, smashed him in the face, took off his bass and hit him with that and then jumped on him and all out chaos ensued. We could only assume from our vantage point that said nazi got his ass kicked. About 30 seconds later Ken emerged from the pileup with his shirt torn and made his way back to the front of the stage. He strapped on his bass and said into the microphone ‘Nazis are NOT F**KING WELCOME at a Dropkick Murphys show.’”

Watch the whole thing go down below because, honestly, who doesn’t love seeing a Nazi get punched out?

re: #164 Vicious Babushka

So if all the girls are abstinent, then who are the guys going to get it on with? Each other?

Yeah, that’s always been part of the issue. it’s the virgin/whore dichotomy: boys will hang with the whores then marry the virgins. good boys will quit seeing the whores then, but if they slide well, they can recover. Girls, on the other hand, are one or the other forever; whoredom cannot be redeemed. Single parenthood is not only a just punishment but is one of the permanent marks by which the “virgins” and boys will know the whores.

Part of the parallel to this is the “you can’t rape a whore” meme. It’s just another one of the deserved punishments.

Let’s face it, that’s part of the reason for such resistance to not just Roe v Wade but Griswold. How dare the whores remain hidden? How’s a boy to find release when he wants it if he can’t find a whore - he’s going to be tagged for rape by mistakenly grabbing a ‘good girl’.

I can’t spit enough to express my disgust.

13-year-old called ‘whore’ after Connecticut football players charged with sexual assault

The 13-year-old victim of an alleged sexual assault has been called a “whore” and bullied by athletes and students after two Connecticut football players were charged for the crime.

The Register Citizen on Wednesday reported that Edgar Gonzalez and Joan Toribio, both 18, had been arrested on charges of felony second-degree sexual assault and other crimes.

School officials told the paper that the incident was not an indication of deeper problems within the school’s culture.

“If you look at crime statistics these things happen everywhere and we’re not any different than any other community,” Torrington High School Athletic Director Mike McKenna said.

But The Register Citizen found evidence on social media that “dozens” of athletes and students had antagonized the girl, accusing her of “ruining the lives” of the football players.

“I wanna know why there’s no punishment for young hoes,” one student tweeted.

“You destroyed two people’s life,” another wrote.

One person posted a screen grab of an SMS message: “U should shout out the 8th grade hoes from torrington fucking juniors & seniors.”

“Idk what’ more sad,” the person wrote on Twitter. “The young ass hoes or the creeps fuckin these young ass hoes! Shouts out to Torrington CT!”

Ohio attorney general on charging Steubenville harassers: We’re sick of the victim being victimized

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine (R) defended his decision to keep protecting the 16-year-old victim in the rape case that became an international flashpoint after she was assaulted in Steubenville, Ohio, in August 2012.

“We’re sick and tired of the victim being victimized,” DeWine told Today Show host Savannah Guthrie. “We have to protect the victim. We’re gonna take whatever action it takes to protect this young lady.”

Two 16-year-old girls are in custody for allegedly threatening the victim following the March 17 conviction of two Steubenville High School football players, Trent Mays and Ma’Lik Richmond, for attacking the victim.

“Freedom of speech is fine, First Amendment is wonderful,” DeWine said. “But these two individuals crossed the line. You cannot, under Ohio law, threaten to kill someone. We’re not gonna tolerate it and we’re not gonna put up with it.”

Even though the trial is over, DeWine said, the victim and her family are still being hurt.

“Imagine going through a rape and then having to see things on the internet that are totally obnoxious,” he said. “Now, not only that but she is threatened and her life is threatened.”

Performance, yes. but I’m going to repeat myself: rape is not about performance of sex. rape is about physical dominance and power.

Note, just for a glimpse, that the legal crime for which those two are facing punishment is not “rape”. It is “digital penetration.” They were recorded using their fingers, not their penises. But it’s defacto rape anyway.

CNN’s Roland Martin: GOP has power in the states where it matters

So while Democrats salivate at the prospect of winning the White House in 2016, Republicans continue to lay the groundwork for taking over the state houses and gubernatorial mansions, and building a formidable team of next-generation politicians to dominate there and in the White House.
In fact, many Republicans have told me they couldn’t care less about Washington, because legislation with real impact is being proposed and passed in the states
. That’s why you’ve seen groups quietly backing initiatives on the state level and bypassing the hot lights and screaming media in Washington.

The real battles on same-sex marriage, abortion, education, spending, labor unions, and, yes, the Affordable Care Act are happening state by state. And Democrats are being caught flat-footed because they ignored the admonition of former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean to create a 50-state party, and instead, created a party that cared more about Congress and the White House.

Think about it: Obama won Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Nevada, all states with GOP governors. So clearly voters in those states chose the Republican alternative in statewide elections, but when it came to the presidency, said “No thanks.”

I’m not buying for a second this silly notion that the GOP will have a Damascus Road experience and drastically change. It’s not going to happen. There will be some movement on the national level, but Republican grass-roots organizers are very well aware that the message the GOP is selling statewide is a winning formula.

Trust me, Republicans are concocting other pieces of legislation to bring change on the state level, regardless of what’s happening in Washington.
The political adage “All politics is local” has not changed.

Maybe more of my brothers and sisters in Washington need to get outside the Beltway, hit the road and discover the far more expansive America that is happening outside Washington, Maryland, Virginia, New York and New Jersey. If they do, they’ll find out that the conventional wisdom is pretty much worthless.

GOOD THING SHE HAS A MAN TO SUPPORT HER! WHAT WOULD LUCY TELL A SINGLE MOTHER?

Never mind, they wouldn’t get invited to the parties that she attends.

Rick Wiles: ‘The Man in the White House Is a Devil from Hell’

End Times broadcaster Rick Wiles of TruNews has found more “proof” to bolster his case that President Obama is a demon: The History Channel’s “The Bible” miniseries. Reacting to charges that the character depicting Satan looks similar to Obama, Wiles believes “God guided the hand of the makeup artist and blinded the eyes of everybody on the movie set while it was being recorded” so that they wouldn’t see the resemblance.

But then, Wiles claims, God “removed” the “spiritual blinders” once “the program was broadcast nationally on the History Channel.” He concludes that this is yet another “clue” from Heaven that “the man in the White House is a devil from Hell.”

Someone needs to let Rick know that Satan looking like Obama is just a liberal lie because they hate the Bible.

Beverly Hills Public Library

Before urban development filled the Los Angeles Basin and the adjacent inland valleys, Southern California was once a much wilder place. Archivist Gail Stein of the Beverly Hills Public Library submitted this ca. 1890s photo. In it, Edson A. Benedict clutches a rifle. Behind him is the landscape of a Coldwater Cañon that looks much different from the exclusive residential community of today.

Benedict was one of the first settlers in the future city of Beverly Hills. Benedict Cañon is named after him.” Stein explains. “This image provides a view of the terrain after the Ranchero era and before the beginning of the development of the city.”

My mom lives in downtown Fullerton. She had an orange tree in her yard from the grove that was replaced by development. I have the last orange from it, dried to the size of a golf ball. I call it The Last Orange From Orange County, a bit hyperbolic, but not much.

LA was pretty much a backwater until the motion picture industry set up there. Why they chose Los Angeles: because Thomas Edison was demanding royalties from every commercial use of his invention, the moving picture camera! Since Edison was in New Jersey, the movie producers moved as far away from him as they could go!

I heard anothe story that they had originally settled on Flagstaff, Arizona: it has a sunny climate and brilliant scenery being near Monument Valley and Sedona, but the crew sent to scout the site arrived in the midst of the three-week rainy season in the summer and decided to move on.

Flagstaff also at 7,000 ft. and has months of being snowed in.

half right — they were intending to set up the movie biz in Arizona… but it was raining when their train pulled into the station in Phoenix. So they decided to keep going.
